Cobra Starship + Sing It Loud + Cash Cash + Mimi Saywer @ Birmingham Academy 2 – 23rd May 2009 - Review for Brumlive
Cobra Starship + Sing It Loud + Cash Cash + Mimi Saywer @ Birmingham Academy 2 – 23rd May 2009 – Review for Brumlive
Tonight kicks off with Mimi Sawyer, an electro orientated indie pop rock band, girl fronted and pretty tame. These guys weren’t so suited to the gig tonight, so although they played a solid set of whatever it is they called their genre it didn’t go down so well. Partly the fault of the early start, but mostly due to the young fan base of the headliners.
Next up were Cash Cash, who sounded an…

And please don't tell me that I'm dreaming When all I ever wanted was to dream another sunset with you If I roll over when it's over I'll take this Cali sunrise with me And wake up with the fondest memories

Kids in Glass Houses + Valencia @ Birmingham Barfly – 28th May 2008 - Review for Brumlive
Kids in Glass Houses + Valencia @ Birmingham Barfly – 28th May 2008 – Review for Brumlive
With no local support (shame on you Barfly) Valenciaare first on, playing to a nearly sold-out crowd. You can tell there are a few hardcore fans in the crowd as the hands hit the air as soon as the Americans walk on stage. The music is lively pop-orientated rock, reminding me of All American Rejects but a little heavier. By the second song the band have small mosh pit going (although it is short…

The Blackout + Silverstein + hollywood undead @ Wolverhampton Wulfrun Hall – 22nd May 2009 - Review for Brumlive
The Blackout + Silverstein + hollywood undead @ Wolverhampton Wulfrun Hall – 22nd May 2009 – Review for Brumlive
I arrive too late to catch the American bands Silverstein and The Hollywood Undead, although I did catch a little of each at the Slam Dunk festival two days later.
The Hollywood Undead play an atrocious mix of rock and rap, taking the same ingredients as the seminal Rage Against The Machine, but instead of producing impressive riffs, powerful lyrics and a legendary backwash, The Undead use awful…

Cancer Bats + The Plight + SSS @ Academy 2, Birmingham – 4th May 2009 - Review for Brumlive
Cancer Bats + The Plight + SSS @ Academy 2, Birmingham – 4th May 2009 – Review for Brumlive
SSS are preceded by an almost legendary status, mutterings and rumours of this hardcore band that have lasted through time to bring old school hardcore to the new generation of kids. But this reputation only sets them up for a fall, old school they are, but the kind of old school that got forgotten, the bands who’s songs had none of the impressive riffage or raw power of other bands. The band…

Emmure + Winds Of Plague + War From A Harlots Mouth + iwrestledabearonce + Visions @ Birmingham Academy2, 2nd May 2011 - Review for Brumlive
Emmure + Winds Of Plague + War From A Harlots Mouth + iwrestledabearonce + Visions @ Birmingham Academy2, 2nd May 2011 – Review for Brumlive
First up tonight are the tech metallers of Visions; but it’s an early set and cold crowd, they really have their work cut out for them. Unfortunately the sound for these guys is very muddy, and despite hands moving as fast as lightening over the frets, there’s nothing but a low rumble and the pounding drums to be heard.
The singer does a reasonable job of getting people a little more hyped up…

Example + Wretch 32 + Neon Hitch @ Birmingham Academy, 6th March 2011 - Review for Brumlive
Example + Wretch 32 + Neon Hitch @ Birmingham Academy, 6th March 2011 – Review for Brumlive
The queue for tonight’s show is unbelievable, reaching far out of sight of the entrance, and with so many young fans wearing very little it was understandable that people were desperate to get out of the cold.
Once inside there is time to catch the very end of Neon Hitch‘s set. There’s a lot of people on stage, and lots of fancy costumes, but it was difficult to see any correlation between what…
