the path well trodden
For whoever wishes to save his nefesh will lose it. But whoever loses his nefesh on my account will save it. - Lukas 9:24, Orthodox Jewish Bible (OJB)
With the exception of 11.25 million doctors in the world, barely anyone else knows what these mean at first glance.
They simply exist as squiggly lines on a page.
For 37 million people in the world, these lines brusquely impose limits on their life spans. Ironically, these lines don’t bring about clear definition; they spell out the shadow of uncertainty each of these 37 million individuals live with till their time is up.
My mentor is somewhere in there.
Those who know him have been indelibly changed by his humility and sincerity. Many more have been blessed by a deep and introspective wisdom that belies his physical age.
Before being called to serve, the only thing he was serving was detention and punishment. A rather delinquent youth, he spent his time finding all sorts of manners and ways to beat the system. Eventually, he landed in some serious hot soup, warranting a long stint of corrective work order.
I imagine few at that time would have ever thought he would become the man he is today.
Fast forward to 4 years ago, while knee-deep in training for his specialty of choice, he would then be diagnosed with Brugada syndrome, and have his life course bumped in a totally different direction.
According to Wikipedia,
“ Brugada syndrome (BrS) is a genetic disease that is characterised by abnormal ECG findings and an increased risk of sudden cardiac death. It is the major cause of sudden unexplained death syndrome (SUDS), also known as sudden adult death syndrome (SADS). This condition is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern and manifests itself more commonly in males.”
It was at this juncture of his life (or just prior), that I got to know him, while serving overseas in India. I saw how shaken he was, how broken he was, and how he let God put him back together, although together didn’t mean putting the eggshell fragments back together like an egg once more.
He had to give up his specialty of choice, he lost the ability to enjoy sports, the AICD (automated implanted cardio-defibrillator) kept him awake at night and gradually caused his left hand to grow weak through strain on his shoulder. The AICD is a tiny contraption placed just under the left collarbone that deliver a shock to the heart whenever it detects fatal rhythms, in this case triggered by the Brugada syndrome. In summary, it is his one hope to live through the night.
In due course, this would play a major factor in his relationships too, with partners, friends, colleagues and family.
I saw how in his time of greatest need, having lost his hope, purpose and trajectory in life, he just knelt and lay it all at the feet of Jesus, how he yielded everything he held onto before the diagnosis, in exchange for something different.
A man who lives everyday with the very real uncertainty of not knowing whether that day is indeed his last, has much to teach.
And so I asked him to mentor me, knowing that he too, was big on mentorship and was asking God for mentees too.
4 years on, God has multiplied his ministry, lifted him up in his job, forged new relationships that are sealed despite the real lack of “forever”, and granted him wisdom that overflows in humility and astuteness.
While the nefesh here refers to life, sentient life, I have found another Hebrew homonym that refers to “a Semitic monument placed near a grave so as to be seen from afar”. We are all in the business of accumulating things to be known for, to be “seen from afar”. I have here a man who seeks not to build his own nefesh, because ultimately, it ends up near a grave, to be forgotten with the passage of time. His eyes are set on things eternal, rendering the nefesh irrelevant.
This is the man whose path well trodden I follow after, just as he follows along the same path after Jesus.
Thank you for pushing me to become a cell leader when I was so fearful. for hearing my confessions of sin and being both quick to censure me and yet show me how to get out of the woods for praying for me for being frank with me about my choice of life partner for teaching me to be generous, in the trust of His provision for setting the example of being honest about personal sin, in neither self-persecutory nor self-glorifying manners. for sifting out what really counts in our practice as physicians for hearing my failures and encouraging me for showing me what it is to be a man of God, a mentor, friend and physician.
Above all, thank you for showing me who Jesus really is.
