#FridayFeature | Bruce Cohen - Drawn to realistic techniques and unusual perspectives, Cohen is particularly inspired by the sense of order found in 17th-century Dutch still life paintings. At the same time, the other worldliness of Surrealism also plays a pivotal role. However, it it is the density of detail and decorative ambiguities in Indian miniature paintings that most impact his visions. - Cohen's surrealist instincts come into play in his ability to express psychological states through interior spaces. Artists have long been interesting in depicting interiors, and indeed his paintings recall the unusual vantage points of Matisse and Magritte. Unlike such antecedents, Cohen's works transcend rationality through the use of hyperrealist representation. Though they entail layers of decision making in the arrangement of objects and architectural elements, Cohen adds unusual angles and points of view to soften any feeling of rigidity or premeditation. - Though he uses a combination of saturated and muted hues, he is particularly masterful in generating light sources that draw inspiration from Vermeer. #StaffPicks | Bruce Cohen by Diana McNeill ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is the sole oil painting in our current exhibition of Bruce Cohen's work. The painting is surrounded by fifteen expressive pastel on paper studies. These preparatory drawings are an instrumental part of Cohen's process, providing rare insight into the development of his oil paintings. The 11x7 inch study for this painting hangs adjacent to it in the show. Seeing them side by side, I am amazed at the consistency with which Cohen carries through his imagery, composition and color choices from the loose, unstructured pastel study to the geometric construct of the oil. This canvas is truly captivating as its architecture and palette subtly echoes Richard Diebenkorn's iconic Ocean Park series. Cohen's mesmerizing paintings are unapologetically beautiful, toeing the line between pleasant and surreal. There is always something more than meets the eye as  he explores spiritual narratives and metaphors suggestive of human presence, but without a figure ever inhabiting the scene. Cohen's refined brushwork and his commitment to the illusion of three-dimensionality, accentuate the dreamlike quality of his interiors. #FridayFeature | Bruce Cohen, Interior with Freesias on Blue Tablecloth, 2016 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A consistent painter who has been working with the imagery of still lives in interior settings for over 30 years - "It's not like he ever took two years off and did portraits," notes his brother [artist Larry Cohen] - Bruce Cohen has a probing, restless mind and an attraction to the metaphysical. Although his paintings have the burnished clarity of Old Master paintings, they aren't about observation: they are put together, not observed. Cohen's fluent hybrid style, with its rich narrative suggestions, is the product of a lifetime of study, absorption and practice...When asked how he starts a painting, Cohen responded that he often begins with light; "It gives me an initial motivation, and then other things start to develop." Cohen's subject matter evolves over time in what he calls an "observation collage process." Although Cohen certainly looks at the things he intends to paint, he prefers to "ultimately not be confronted with those things." As a result, his images come from drawings, from photos, and from the imagination. Cohen’s alluring interiors and exquisite still lifes continue to captivate in his new body of work. The exhibition will feature a dozen paintings, most on canvas and some on wood panel, ranging in scale from 16 x 16 inches up to 48 x 72 inches. -- Bruce Cohen’s singular aesthetic is immediately distinguishable in its refined realism. He has explored the genres of interior and still life paintings for decades, yet his output always feels new and fresh. Nodding to the old masters and his passion for art history, he successfully summons a contemporary feel by way of a polished, yet punchy palette with an almost surreal compression of the picture plane. He executes a mastery of subject matter to his advantage and constantly perfects his painting to stunning effects. Cohen’s motivation and inspiration culminates in an unhurried and meticulous rendering. Similar to artists like Jasper Johns and Jim Dine, who use a lexicon of repeated images as a visual vocabulary, Cohen revisits themes and objects (flowers, vases, books, window sills) finding endless arrangements.
