If anyone can identify the pattern from this sea pottery plate shard I'd really appreciate knowing what it is. When I found it on the beach on the Jurassic Coast, I immediately thought Mid-Century Modern and it fit so well with these lovely sea tumbled seaglass pebbles from Seaham. It all came together with a salvaged vintage frosted glass bead that has been twisted into the shape of a shell. The pendant sits on an 18 inch faux leather waxed cord with 2 inch extender and tiny seaglass nugget. . . . #midcenturymodern #midcenturymodernceramics #midcenturymodernnecklace #seaglassjewelry #seaglassnecklace #ceramicpottery #potteryshard #seapottery #foundobjectjewelry #brownseaglass #brownisbeautiful #seaglassstack #seahamseaglass #beachcombingnecklace https://www.instagram.com/p/CqVitNRowxN/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Karen Vega has become the first Indigenous Oaxacan model to appear on the cover of Vogue Mexico. Representation matters and I hope to see more diversity in media and fashion as a standard and not a trend. Felicidades por romper barreras @karenespinosavega ! Vega said “It is time for new generations to have media that show them expressions of equality and educate them about the differences that make us all beautiful”.When Vega saw actress Yalitza Aparicio on the cover of Vogue, she felt seen, and she hopes that her work will make other girls feel represented as well. “My grain of sand would be to put the focus on the southern woman, our stories, where we come from so that more than just photo models, we can also be an inspiration of another kind,” said Vega. . . . . . . . #historicalgarments #vintage #costumedesign #BIPOC #fashion #dresshistory #Mexico #historicalsewing #fashionhistory #brownisbeautiful #historiadelamoda #histoiredelart #Vogue #historyofphotography #representationmatters #decolonizingfashion https://www.instagram.com/p/CChPiDVBmdp/?igshid=2f376muji828

"You are loved just for being who you are, just for existing. You don't have to do anything to earn it. Your shortcomings, your lack of self-esteem, physical perfection, or social and economic success - none of that matters. No one can take this love away from you, and it will always be here." Traditional women's costume , district of Tinta, province of Canchis, Cusco, Peru. With this costume there is a flat rectangular hat (montera)made of wool, decorated with pleated, patterned ribbon sound at the side. The red jacket (chaqueta), black skirt (pollera) and long blue shawl (lliklla) are made of hand-woven wool and cloth and machine embroidered with geometric designs and flowers. In their hands, they carry t'ika warakas, which are made of colored, woollen pompoms or flowers and used as an accessory in some dances. The F.P. initials are for the Filigranas Peruanas Association. Glow And Lovely?

Anita gazed at the mirror with despair; she was tired, frustrated, helpless, and insecure. She had tried it all- coconut oil, honey, tomatoes, fairness creams, Katalok Baba’s prasad- yet the color of her skin remained the same. She was born in Independent India and still, she hears the society talking about fair skin as the symbol of beauty and respect.
Discrimination against dark-colored individuals- visibly and invisibly- is woven in the very fabric of our country. The question is how did we adopt colorism and what effects has it had on our society? The deep-rooted reason for the mentioned practice came through our sea in 1600 and ruled over us for two hundred years: the British.
The British exhibited themselves as the ideal standard of “beauty” and established an equation i.e. being white is equivalent to being superior. Indians, in that era, were subjected to prejudices based on the color of their skin - dark-colored Indians were restricted from participating in an already limited public life. The British would prefer lighter-skinned men and women for employment and make comments with the intention to look down upon dark-skinned individuals. Even after the British left us we remained victims of our problematic views.
Today, mainstream media is dominated with light-skinned models, and actors who aggressively vouch for fairness creams on media platforms, and in real life they themselves ‘magically’ become five to six shades lighter over a period of time. In the world of Indian cinema, a fair-skinned person is repeatedly showcased as a hero, a savior, while a dark-skinned person is infused with negativity and vengeance. As a consequence, a new layer has been added to an older layer of injustice and skin lightening practices have become normalized to the extent that we unconsciously overlook it (e.g. by making comments like “black forest”). Indian society evaluates the significance of a person based on the color of their skin and continues to create comparisons between caste and skin color.
Anita closed her eyes and when she opened them she, for the first in a long while, she saw herself beyond her color. She got up and threw everything that restricted her from embracing her skin but she wondered how to throw away the whole society?
But in recent times, a new voice has begun to slowly rise in a room filled with the noise of supremacy. Dark-skinned individuals and allies have started to vouch for inclusion and equality. Many campaigns and reform measures like “Dark is Beautiful’ and “Dark is Divine” have started to surface with the aim to question our conditioning and rave for change. Emmanuel, the mind behind the “Dark is Beautiful” campaign, said, "The idea that dark skin is not good looking is something that is deeply rooted in society and we are trying to create awareness about it." The intention of the campaigns is to gradually change mindsets and eradicate internal discrimination in our supposedly diverse country. Subsequently, a wave of positive impact has begun to dominate urban areas, more and more people are standing up and challenging the deep-rooted colorism and racism in our society. Along with campaigns and awareness drives, interest groups are also taking steps but has it created a positive impact?
The parent company of fair and lovely, Unilever decided to drop the ‘fair’ from their name following the protests against racism in the west. But, Fair and Lovely renamed themselves as Glow and Lovely. An Indian wedding is still an opportunity for people to laud a fair-skinned individual and give their unsolicited comments on the dark-skinned. Dark-skinned individuals continue to battle insecurities and lower self-esteem. Men and women continue to spend a greater portion of their wealth on lightening products with the intention to be ‘pretty’. People continue to have rejections and prejudices based on their skin color. We continue to determine the status and stance of an individual based on the shade of their skin. The change will not dominate each stratum of society until each one of us questions our deep-rooted prejudice and embraces each color as a part of identity, and not a determinant of personality.
Anita took a pencil and wrote, on a sheet of paper, being whiter is equivalent to being darker. Now she awaits the world to look at it and embrace it.
