Fight Flakka!

From a purely scientific perspective, flakka is very interesting. If you haven’t heard of this “designer” drug, you obviously don’t live in Fort Lauderdale. The chemistry involved in creating drugs made me re-watch Breaking Bad. Physical science was my favorite subject in high school conceptually but I discovered that I am terrible at fractions.

Flakka is reeking havoc on the streets. It is a prime example of the good, fast, and cheap sales model. If it’s good and fast, it won’t be cheap, etcetera, etcetera. Flakka provides an unparalleled psychedelic high for a fraction of the cost of most drugs. It meets the fast and cheap markers so naturally, it does irreparable damage to the users body and sometimes the hallucinogenic side-effect cause the user to attempt to kill bystanders which can lead to serious injury. There have been incidents where the attempt to kill was successful.

I recently attended a flakka prayer vigil sponsored by The God Squad, a Fort Lauderdale Police Department peace keeping initiative. The event was held on Thursday, July 2nd at First Baptist Church of Fort Lauderdale. Unfortunately I was late so I didn’t hear all of the speakers. I was completely compelled by Dr. Nabil El Sanadi's presentation. He taught us about the chemical breakdown. I was unprepared to take copious notes so I googled Broward Health and flakka. It took me right to an informative PowerPoint.(http://www.browardhealth.org/upload/docs/Corporate/FLAKKA_elsanadi.pdf) Flakka’s chemical name is Alpha-pyrrolidinopentiophenone. Like its predecessors, bath salts and crystal meth, flakka can be taken in a variety of ways: snorted, smoked, injected, and swallowed, all for the low, low price of $5.00. One of the most interesting things I learned is that when drugs become outlawed, chemists just add a carbon chain. This changes the the drug just enough to make it “new” and therefore legal.

I was not seeking information when I attended this vigil though I left with a wealth of it. I went because I wanted to pray for the poor souls who succumb to the urge to escape reality. Flakka is so powerful that it causes instant addiction. There have been over 20 deaths in Broward County so far. It’s popular amongst the youth and the homeless populations because for $5.00 or less you can have an extreme high with no memory of the last use. Flakka has many simultaneous side-effects that combine in a spectacularly disastrous way including decreased inhibition, paranoia and delirium, and sudden violent outbursts. All of these things and more occur while the persons insides are overheating, their brain swells, and their blood pressure skyrockets.

As a Downtown Fort Laudsrdale resident and an advocate of the pedestrian lifestyle, it’s unsafe going about my daily business in my beloved city. As a Christian I believe we can change our minds but only God can change our hearts. I went to the prayer vigil to send up focused prayer for these people and those of us around them. Flakka is deadly for the user and dangerous to the rest of us. This is serious! If you suspect someone of using flakka, do not engage them. Call the paramedics and police. They are equipped to handle these situations. Get yourself to a safe location where you can call the authorities and don’t be afraid to pray.
