Who's down with OTP: Not a lot of OTPing today.
Who's down with BrOTP: Everyone was on the same page – even if Callen was a tad tardy to start the day.
Any pressing need for a cranky retired Admiral? Only to say mean things to Argento and Parker Cole.
Who is running the team this week? Nell from the office, Callen in San Diego.
Fashion review: Callen is wearing a medium blue suit, light blue dress shirt and blue and red tie. Sam is in a black suit with his a crisp white dress shirt, a dark tie and his Special Warfare/Navy SEAL Trident. Kensi is wearing a green tee-shirt, Deeks’s is medium blue. Nell is wearing a lovely blue jumper over a white and blue checked blouse with a bow. Fatima is wearing a white light jacket over a black shirt. Roundtree is in a dark plaid blue suit, pale blue shirt and red and white tie.
Music: None.
Any notable cut scene: None.
Quote: Nell: “Fatima?” Fatima: “I'm trying to meditate.” Nell: “And, uh... how's this going for you?” Fatima: “I don't get it. I spent a fortune on these candles. And I didn't realize they were scented.” Nell: “Yeah, I can, I can smell that.” Fatima: “I have such a headache and I keep repeating the same thing, but it just makes me more stressed.” Nell: “Right. Well, what is your mantra?” Fatima: “There's a lot riding on this.” Nell: “Oh, I-I'm aware of that.” Fatima: “No, that's, that's my mantra.” Nell: “Oh.”
Anything else: The episode opens with a summary of the season 11 “Code of Conduct” finale. In a military prison at the San Diego Naval Station, the guard has the prisoners up for Reveille day after day. A bearded Chief Petty Officer Thomas Argento has the last cell in his unit. On the day of his trial, he is clean shaven and dressed in his formal uniform. As Argento leaves, the guard sings “Anchors Going Away” in a mocking tone. Argento just smiles as he leaves the cell block.
A well-dressed Callen is being picked up by Sam behind The Squid and Dagger. Sam, also sporting a suit, is in a hurry. Callen is running late.
In the Armory, Deeks is practicing loading his gun with a blindfold on. Kensi joins him. Deeks wonders if Roundtree can load his gun with a blindfold on. He can, according to Kensi, who saw Roundtree do it. Deeks asks about Roundtree’s location. Learning Roundtree is just outside San Diego, Deeks thinks there “will be blood” if Roundtree beats Callen and Sam. Kensi is happy that Roundtree is getting to finish what he started with NCIS last spring – this was his first trip out of the country for NCIS, his first big case, his first war criminal. Deeks jokes about remembering his first war criminal. Kensi is not amused.
Fatima updates a commuting Nell on the case including that the President is tweeting about it. While the case is getting all the attention, Fatima and Nell know all that matters is what the prosecution can prove.
Sam introduces himself to Lt. Col. Castro, a Marine and the JAG officer trying the case. She and Sam spoke on the phone several times. While Callen and Roundtree are looking for some breakfast, Sam asks how Castro feels about the case. With the strong testimony of the other SEALs, Castro thinks they have a good case. She knows the defense will be after the other SEALs but she prepped them. “Not one has wavered,” according to Castro.
As Castro enters the court, she meets Margaux West, Esq. West is Argento’s private counsel and a friend of Argento’s wife’s cousin – a US Senator. “How could I not say yes?”
In the courtroom, Argento agrees to a trial by military judge alone and not by a military jury. Judge Sorrento will be the jury and he’s also in charge of the sentence. Sorrento notes that he read the witness statements but those statements are not the trial – the government has the burden of proof. Callen, Sam and Roundtree are the only people in the courtroom’s gallery – all socially distance from each other.
Castro makes her opening statement about Argento’s crimes and the brave sailors who would not remain silent about Argento’s actions. Kendricks, Moffett and Cole – three of the four men who gave sworn statements about Argento’s actions will testify. The fourth SEAL, Barr, is on a mission and unavailable. These sailors put their careers on the line to do what was right. Argento is the war criminal. The defense decides to hold their opening statement until Castro makes her case.
Nell finds Fatima meditating in Ops, complete with candles. Lots of candles and a rain forest video playing on the big screen. Fatima didn’t know the candles were scented and Ops sort of smells. Her mantra – “there’s a lot riding on this” – isn’t helpful either. While Nell has nothing to offer while they’re working, she does have something worse – Argento’s Senator family member is tweeting about the case including people speaking badly about Argento burning in the fires of hell. Fatima thinks the Senator is a little ray of sunshine. Nell is more worried that the Senator knows something they don’t.
Castro questions Kendricks, who is reviewing his statement to NCIS. He confirms it is his sworn statement but he no longer stands behind what he said. Kendricks denies that Argento killed the prisoner – Kendricks takes the blame. “What the hell just happened?” Roundtree asks Callen and Sam. Callen thinks the case has been blown out of the water. Sam is furious that NCIS fought to get Kendricks immunity.
The judge wants to see the lawyers, wondering “what the hell is going on?” Wells starts to speak but the Sorrento addressed his questions to Castro. Castro asks for a one-week continuance but the judge is willing to give her an hour. Wells gets a little mouthy so the judge decides to give Castro until 2PM. As they walk away from the bench, Castro thanks Wells for her help.
As Kendricks leaves the courtroom, Sam is right behind him. Kendricks won’t talk to Sam – he gets into his SUV and drives off.
Callen finds Castro near the courthouse. She’s lost more than Kendricks – now Moffett is missing. Worried about what they’ll say on the stand, Castro can’t really move forward. Callen wants to help. The team will look at who visited Argento in the brig – see if someone told him about a possible move against the witnesses. Callen will also investigate Kendricks’s family – maybe the threat isn’t to Kendricks but is to his family.
Leaving the courthouse, Roundtree runs into Cole, who is not in his dress uniform. Cole wants to help. Working with Kendricks for three years, Cole never saw the man lie. Cole knows Kendricks, Moffett and Argento – he can help.
Fatima makes a strange noise when Nell asks for an update. Though Nell enjoys working with Fatima, they don’t have enough of a history or shorthand for that noise to make sense. Fatima explains that Argento’s visitors list was rather limited – no wife, no sister, brother, parents or in-laws. While they all have been in the news “beating the drum” for Argento’s innocence, nobody visited. Fatima just notices that Nell is sitting at Hetty’s desk. Nell asks “how do I look?” “It suits you,” Fatima says. Back to Argento, he had a “ton” of visitors – none recognizable to Fatima. Nell actually thinks that’s a clue.
Kensi and Deeks arrive in a quiet suburban neighborhood. “Too quiet,” they both agree until they hear a scream. Kensi and Deeks grab their weapons and move toward the home with the screaming. The woman at the house sounds normal when Kensi and Deeks do the whole “federal agents” announcement but will only open the door if they put their “g-u-n-s” away. They comply and a woman carrying a teddy bear and wearing a red Sheriff Woody hat. Her children were playing hide and seek and that was the scream.
Kensi and Deeks introduce themselves but Monica Kendricks already knows who they are. She is so grateful for all the help Malcolm received while working with NCIS. He couldn’t have testified without NCIS’s support. Monica learns about what Kendricks did in court from Kensi and Deeks – she turned off the TV so the kids would have no chance of hearing about their father’s testimony. She’s stunned – Kendricks didn’t kill the prisoner. Kensi and Deeks ask about threats to their family. Monica doesn’t believe them – Malcolm went through a living hell to get ready to testify.
Sam walks into Argento’s holding celling. Argento is dismissive of “the man, the myth, the legend himself.” Sam just stares at Argento. Argento keeps talking about what happened in the court – how Sam didn’t see that coming. Sam wonders if Argento knew it was coming. Argento promises he was as surprised as everyone else – “how crazy is that?” Argento has no plans of spending the rest of his life behind bars and based on Kendricks’s testimony, he won’t.
Cole tries to call Moffett – who isn’t answering his home phone and his cell phone is going straight to voicemail. Cole figures if Moffett hasn’t been kidnapped and tortured by “Argento’s minions”, he may be hiding at his gym or his ex-wife’s home. Roundtree sends Cole to the gym, he’s going to see the ex-wife. Cole states the obvious – this wasn’t how the day was supposed to go down.
Nell and Fatima call Kensi. They went through all of Argento’s visitors – nobody has any direction connection to him, even a connection through friends and family. The visitors all have a connection, however – they all work for the same courier service in downtown LA. Information was being delivered to Argento through couriers. Kensi and Deeks are on their way to the courier service.
Margaux West is chatting on the phone when she’s approached by Castro. West is looking for the charges to be dropped. Castro isn’t looking to drop charges. She will be pressing charges, however, if West had anything to do with Kendricks changing his testimony.
Kensi and Deeks meet Martin, the one Martin on the planet who is chattier than Deeks. Martin the courier is excited to meet Martin Deeks. Spelling Argento for Martin at the courier service gets them the person who was sending the couriers. Sadly, that person is a ghost. The name was fake and so was the law firm paying for the courier. Couriers have been visiting Argento for months.
Roundtree gets to Moffett’s ex-wife’s house only to see Moffett run. Moffett jumps over a neighbor’s fence and right into the neighbor’s pool. A now toweled off and drying Moffett doesn’t know who got to Kendricks but he knows why. Moffett was sent photos of his son taken over the last few months. Moffett sent his ex-wife and his son to her parents’ home in Palm Springs. He’s been waiting for whoever wants to threaten them. Kendricks knew about the threats to Moffett’s son. That’s why he changed his testimony.
Back with chatty Martin from the courier service, chatty Martin from LAPD and Kensi try to get info on the man who paid for the couriers. Courier service Martin knew the guy was weird – always came in alone, always paid cash – older, white man with a military look. Chatty Martin has no photos of the man, however.
Roundtree calls Sam – Marines from the Twentynine Palms Marine base are now with Moffett’s son, ex-wife and her parents. Sam is off to see Moffett – they have two-hours to testify. Parker Cole, Petty Officer Michael Cole’s father, appears in his full dress uniform. The senior Cole is a Navy SEAL legend. Callen takes a quick series of photos of the older Cole, who is active with a group working with current and retired military.
The older Cole has quite the impressive military record according to Fatima. Graduated from Annapolis in 1969, was a SEAL for 11-years, highly decorated. Son Michael Cole was out of Annapolis as well, now serving with the SEALs.
Sam makes a plea to Moffett, who just wants to protect his four-year old. Sam was hurt that Moffett didn’t think that Sam or NCIS would protect the boy. With the damage done, Moffett has to do the right thing.
Chatty Martin barely recognizes a returning Kensi and Deeks but certainly recognizes Parker Cole as the man sending the couriers. Deeks asks Chatty Martin if he is sure. Chatty Martin is positive Parker Cole is the man in the security video. Kensi and Deeks tell Chatty Martin he said he didn’t have a photo of the man. Chatty Martin didn’t – he had video. Kensi and Deeks worry about the younger Cole either being a victim of his father’s criminal behavior or part of the scheme.
Pleased with Kensi and Deeks’s work, Callen updates Castro – who thinks she has enough to bring up the senior Cole on charges. As Sam is about to put Moffett into the Challenger and go to the courthouse, the younger Cole pulls up in his truck. Sam wants Callen to get San Diego PD to Moffett’s ex-wife’s house now.
A frightened and weepy Cole wants to stop Sam and Moffett. He’s shaking as he points he gun at Sam. Sam talks about the pressure from his father and that gets Cole to put his gun down. Once Cole is unarmed, Moffett is livid at Cole for threatening his son. Cole is a mess but Moffett wants to testify “more than ever.” San Diego PD pulls up.
Callen arrests Parker Cole just before he enters the courtroom.
At 2PM, Callen is in the courtroom with Roundtree but no Sam. Castro tries to stall for time but fails. Just as Judge Sorrento is about to move on, Sam and Moffett walk in. Moffett testifies.
Deeks tells Kensi that Castro got the US Attorney to file Obstruction of Justice charges against Parker Cole. Malcolm Kendricks’s testimony was thrown out. They are just waiting for the judge to do the right thing. Deeks sees this as a Shakespeare story – Cole turned on his brothers to please his father. “Textbook daddy issues,” according to Kensi but Deeks disagrees.
Callen arrives home when Sam calls. It was a big day for both of them and they did the right thing.
What head canon can be formed from here: Sam’s mention of his father makes the senior Hanna’s lack of screen time just that much more frustrating.
The one big problem with the episode is the location madness. I’m an East Coast person but even I know San Diego is about a two-and-a-half to three hour drive from Los Angeles on a good day, maybe twice that on a bad day. So we’re supposed to believe that Parker Cole paid couriers to go from Los Angeles to San Diego instead of just say hiring a San Diego courier service to do the same. Moffett’s wife and son live in San Diego but Kendricks’s wife and children live in LA. I know military people don’t always live close to the base but is Kendricks travelling three-hours a day to work and three-hours back.
The story is fine, the locations are not.
I’m guessing some of this was how season 11 might have ended with Mac having the Castro role. Still, nice to see Tracie Thoms (big Cold Case fan).
Episode number: Episode two of season 12, 264 episodes in.

mmm if youre doing others' au characters, one of the iri au vessels of your pick? if not feel free to ignore this muah
-breaks fingies- gon go with shine cuz i feel like i know them best outta everyone of yo kids
Why I like them:
when i say ive laid awake in my bed just thinkin bout their design i mean it. i fuckin LOVE their design so much. theres just so much good about it and they are always a joy to draw. the horn design is super unique and ill be honest, it surprised me plenty when i saw it for the first time. i was skeptical about it for more than one reason but after first attempt at drawin them i fell in love. the cloak is incredibly aesthetically pleasing, design of the legs and tail is a joy to behold, the color palette is Absolutely Great because it just screams “this is ave!! aves design!!! theirs!!!!! its them!!!!!!” because them sunset colors are just your trademark. i am Very impressed with the choice to make the masks yellow tinted, like,,,, id be afraid to go that way if only because of the possible connections to radiance. i also ADORE their personality, they just carry this 17 year old awkward kid who also would tots rock somebody outta the dimension with fashion choices or just One Singular Look cuz the Bitch Just Exists Like That
Why I don’t:
their personality kinda hits close to home at times which makes me go -surprised pikachu face- and, even tho i really do understand, i wish theyd confront some things more head on
Favorite episode (scene if movie):
one of the asks you answered; the one with them n whisper sparring sometimes pops into my head to live rent free for like few hours. i love the picture you did, i love that they are Like That, i adore their fighting style and how fuckin dumb they can be about it sometimes
Favorite season/movie:
uhhhhhhhhhhhhh fuck how do i answer this... i GUESS that brokenverse could count as a season or a movie. so far? ive enjoyed their presence in bverse a lot. from start to this day, they were incredibly interesting to see reacting to things around them. the way they popped into the world was Very pleasing and i am glad that i was there to witness both as a viewer and through broken. i am very fascinated with the relationships that form between them n the other bvs and cant wait what will happen with them and what u r plannin for them in the rps if u r!!
Favorite line:
"I didn't know blankets and pillows had such structural integrity." is a really fuckin good one
"Do you want me to tear my wings?? I've never been in a place like this! I don't know how to move around it!” it was interesting to see them blow up and break, it gave a lot of perspective on their character to me and make them feel... like more? it just unlocked more of perspective about them to me. made me think and consider.
Favorite outfit:
that fuckin... croptop hoodie... i know its not an entire outfit but i have Cried over it i just fucking adore it so much. show that nice belly to the world, dont be ashamed of your scars honey, you are doing SO WELL and u fuckin rock it
OTP:
nobody 😔 im p sure that they dont have romance on mind too much if not at all
Brotp:
i like what ive seen of them n whisper so far a lot 👀 but out of actual sib relationships, i kinda like them n lost interacting together? i know that theres a tension between them right now and theres a lot of reasons that they wont like each other, most likely, in the near future, but there was just... something about the whole scene after shine brought them back to the house. and that they didnt leave when lost reached out. they held them and for some reason that was really comforting to read. i believe that if the two will ever want to get over their problems with each other once, there could be something really beautiful and cozy between them
Head Canon:
i got Two:
1. the crystal protects them from bad dreams, if those are still a thing in your au. i think you already sorta established that it has to do somethin with the grimm troupe and i believe that the troupe is something of a repellent of dreams
2. when they lost their lowest pair of wings, it hindered their flight capabilities a lot. theyve struggled for a While, but figured out how to fly with just four. even after all the troubles, they are an amazing flyer, maybe as close as dragonflies are. they are fast, but need to work on steadiness during it. they know their limits and probably enjoy the rush of wind around them (i may be completely wrong with these tho)
Unpopular opinion:
i aint got one chief, i am of the sorry
A wish:
i want to know more about them, about their opinions on the world. about the crystal they wear, about the actions they think would be right. i want to know their weaknesses and faults, their strengths and successes. shine is incredibly interesting already and i cant wait to know more
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen:
i dont want them to ever die by someones hand. i want them to be as safe as possible. i dont want them to lose the innocence of being a living being without a death count
5 words to best describe them:
popular, special, careful, fancy,,,, afraid (to a degree)
My nickname for them:
štístko (little luck)
#Spot says stuff#SWEET FUCK THIS TOOK LONGER THAN EXPECTED#I LOVE SHINE A LOT CAN YA TELL SDKGSLKGJKS#thanks for the ask!!!! this was a lot of fun...#astrangeavenue

job: Wrath of the Empire, until she was forced into hiding after Marr’s death. Sith Lord. Member of the Eternal Alliance, and adviser to Iaze.
phobias: Bugs and insects, but good luck getting her to admit that. Being discovered as a Light Sider in the Empire.
guilty pleasures: Laying in bed all day eating macaroons and watching bad holo-television. Being dramatic in general. Going out to cantinas with Vette and Jaesa and getting black-out drunk.
M O R A L S
morality alignment?: Neutral-Good! Force-wise, she’s a Light Sider who’s initially ashamed of it.

virtues - chastity/charity/diligence/humility/kindness/patience/justice
T H I S - O R - T H A T
introvert/extrovert: Introvert.
organized/disorganized: Disorganized lol. She was the little princess of her Sith family and then she had Quinn in charge of her ship, those things were taken care of for her.
close minded/open-minded: Initially close-minded, but her friendships with Vette and Jaesa help her grow out of that.
calm/anxious: This Sith can fit so much anxiety in her!! I’m pretty sure she’d be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, ngl.
disagreeable/agreeable: Agreeable to friends, disagreeable and a bit bratty to others in a way that only a Sith heiress can be.
cautious/reckless: In social situations and in Sith politics? Cautious. In battle? She thinks she’s invincible and is as reckless as to be expected.

outspoken/reserved: She starts off pretty reserved, but gets more outspoken as she grows more confident in herself.
leader/follower: Leader who initially thought of herself as a follower.
empathetic/unemphatic: Very empathetic.
optimistic/pessimistic: Pessimistic.
traditional/modern: Starts off traditional, ends up being more modern.
hard-working/lazy: Prone to a lot of laziness, but she’s hard-working with what’s important.
R E L A T I O N S H I P S
otp: Yula/Quinn, in a “first love, they were never going to work out even if he hadn’t betrayed her” way. Yula/Koth, in a much more equal and lasting relationship.
ot3: I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t considered Jaesa/Yula/Vette, but that’s AU territory tbh.
brotp: Yula and Vette, Yula and Jaesa, Yula and Illura, Yula and Iaze

Hi Parker!!! For FFXV: 1. What OTPs do you just not get? 2. Are there any popular fandom OTPs you only BroTP? 3. Do you have a NoTP in your fandom? Are they a popular OTP? 5. Has fandom ever made you enjoy a pairing you previously hated? 6. Is there anything you used to like in the game but can’t stand now? 7. Most disliked character(s)? Why? 8. Most disliked arc? Why? 9. Is there an unpopular character you like that the fandom doesn’t? Why?
1. Shipping Prompto with Ardyn? Like, IDK if that’s people’s “OTP” per se but I’ve seen it happen and I’m like “??? WHAT? Why?!” every. Single. Time. I see it.
2. Just the Chocobros, I guess? Like, I get why people ship them as OTPs but I’m a Sucker for Found Family so I see them as brothers.
3. Yes. Ardyn and Prompto. I don’t like it. I don’t know if they’re popular or not but I have seen stuff on it and, I will happily repeat myself, I. Don’t. Like. It.
5. Not really. FFXV ships I dislike tend to stay that way.
6. The lack of backstory, probably. Particularly for Ardyn, TBH. At first it made him ***mysterious*** (oOoOoOh!) but now, especially after Episode Ardyn, I feel like it’s just lacking. Like, he’s an interesting villain but he’d be even better if we knew more about him.
7. Chief Besithia and Emperor What’s-His-Nose. They’re just terrible people, what can I say?
8. L U N A---she did not deserve anything that happened and she had so much potential that they just wasted and squandered and I am so freaking mad!
9. Uh... no? I remember a YouTube video saying that in polls, Ignis always came in last, as the least favorite of the four Chocobros, but I think they’re polling the wrong platforms because over here on Tumblr the fandom seems to really like Ignis and he’s my favorite
#No one is allowed to be mean to welovegroot for asking me these questions#this is my salt#leave welovegroot out of it

Staff App - Hawks
Played by Admin Grimm
OOC:
Name: Grimm
Age: 21
Preferred Pronouns: Any!
Timezone: PST
Discord: N/A
Any topics you want added to the content warning list?: Pandemics
Second choice character?: Bakugo
IC:
Name: Takami Keigo AKA “Hawks”
Age: 27
Gender ID / pronouns: Trans Male, He/Him
OTPs, BroTPs, or NoTPS?: EndHawks baby… As far as BroTPs go I’m down for basically anything- I’m hoping for friendship between him and Rumi, but ultimately will be up for whatever has good chemistry/history in the setting of the group.
Race: Skyfolk
Appearance: Hawks is of average height and has a narrow but athletic build. Despite his small size, he holds a great deal of muscle packed into his form, and could probably crush a skull between his thighs if he wanted. He has large, terra cotta colored wings, although he mostly keeps them folded against his back nowadays. His hair is long, messy, and blond, but typically tied back into a braid.
Role: Prince Consort of the Elves, Elven Ambassador to the Skyfolk, Former Skyfolk Chieftain, and Royal Pain in the Ass.
Skills:
Hawks was once one of the fastest and most acrobatic flyers in his tribe; he still retains some of these skills, although he is limited by his injured shoulder.
Hawks can use both a sword and a bow with deadly accuracy mid flight, and has hunted all sorts of animals to feed his people.
When it comes to grounded combat, however, he is average at best with a blade. He’s still learning to compensate for his newfound lacking mobility.
He is excellent at reading others, a skill which helped him serve as chief, and is dedicated to helping others - it should be noted, however, that his communication skills are solely diplomatic. When it comes to his own personal thoughts and feelings he is garbage at communicating.
Backstory:
( i. )
There exists a species of bird which possesses exceptionally colorful tail feathers. It’s just a pheasant and it struggles to fly, spending most of its days grounded. It poses little threat, but it’s feathers are bright and vibrant and serve as a warning to would-be-predators. ‘Danger,’ they say, and though a bluff, they are quite effective. For the most part, the birds are left alone.
Sometimes(all the time), you’re that bird.
So maybe your feathers are dull, and your wings are average size at best, and you’re nothing particularly special to look at - But that’s not the point.
You’re just like that bird, because all you have to do is flash a vibrant and energized smile, and suddenly you’re the picture perfect representation of what your peers should aspire to be. Never mind your struggles, your anguish, or your pain. Never mind your lost childhood, your missing parents, and your failure at making friends. None of that matters in the slightest. You’re not angry. You’re not upset. You’re not in despair.
You smile and wave and suddenly, you’re not just some orphaned, washed out, failure of a replacement chief - suddenly, you’re a warrior. A leader. Determined. Hard working. The child prodigy who took over an entire tribe at fourteen. A man who never lets anything drag him down.
It’s better this way.
( ii. )
There’s a species of bird which is preyed upon by anything and everything in its environment. It lives in constant stress and fear of being caught out, torn apart, and eaten - or, it probably would, if it possessed the same sentience as people. It’s small, fluffy, and even as an adult, appears to be newly hatched. It spends most of its life seeking out small bugs and seeds. It hides, in hopes that a predator of its own predator will grant it just a few moments longer.
Sometimes(just today), you’re that bird.
You’ve grown into your role now, more than you thought you might - and maybe the discomfort and the emotional volatility doesn’t really go away, but you’re good at hiding it, and you think that’s good enough.
But you’re just like that bird, helpless in your own environment.
You’ve heard of dragons. You’re not stupid, you know what they are. A dragon took your parents and injured countless others, naturally you’ve been educated. But education and preparation are two very different states of being, and you’re not sure any amount of knowledge could have possibly prepared you.
You’re meeting with the other elders about something or another. You don’t really remember, after, and it’s probably not important, anyway - the sudden roar and burst of wind warns you too late to completely dodge the claws lunging your direction.
Dragon.
The aftermath is chaotic; since you’re injured, you’re responsible for leading the evacuation, not for fighting. Every part of your body aches with discontent at running away, but there’d be no point in forcing yourself into combat. It would be stupid, and no matter how chaotic your thoughts might be, you’re not suicidal. So you obey, you lead your people to safety, and you watch as another fells the beast.
After, all you can think about is that you didn’t do anything. But it matters little. The beast is gone. You’re alive. You let a healer see to your injuries.
( iii. )
Today, you’re a fledgling bird about to leave the nest for the first time.
It doesn’t matter that you’ve already learned to fly, that you’re a leader and a warrior, or that you’re more adult than any of your peers will ever be- Today, you leave.
There’s a tradition amongst your people that all must go through before becoming chief - you skipped that, before, because your predecessor expired prematurely and your tribe was desperate for leadership. You had big shoes to fill, and you filled them as needed, but now, it’s time to move on. The dragon plaguing your people is dead, and though you still loathe your lack of involvement in the affair, you’re doing your best to move on with life. That means following tradition.
It is custom for would-be-chieftains to travel for one year in solitude, surviving entirely off the land and the world around them. When they return, they are given a new title befitting of a leader, and they are welcomed with open arms back into their family.
You don’t really need to do that, all of your tribesmen already accept you as their undisputed leader, but you feel utterly useless when you remember how quickly the dragon struck you down. So you make a decision, and you place someone else in charge as interim leader as you prepare yourself for a long journey.
The thing about fledgling birds, though, is that they very rarely return to their nest of origin. You intend to return, so maybe you’re not like a fledgling at all-
When you take flight, you feel dread seep into your bones. You keep flying, but you don’t look back, for fear that any glance home may be your last.
( iv. )
You process the sound, first. Then there’s light, followed by pain, followed by delirium and the sensation of falling. You hit several tree branches as you descend - you know, because you feel the leaves and twigs rake against your flesh - but it’s difficult to determine how many. You hit the ground hard, pain exploding through your young body, and think to yourself, ‘this is it. This is death.’
Then, there’s void.
But you don’t die.
You drift in and out of consciousness for several weeks before you do finally wake. Your surroundings are unfamiliar, full of soft fabrics and lush plant life. You’re… In what appears to be a bed - you think - you know that humans and Elves keep different bedding from your own race, but you’ve never seen one quite like this. It’s soft and much larger than you’re used to, and it seems reflective of wealth and status.
Pulling yourself into a sitting position takes incredible effort, and you realize with great disdain that your wings are injured. You manage, though, and find yourself looking up at a large Elven man.
So, here’s the state of things: You were struck by lightning. You’re recovering with the Elves, in the king’s guest chambers. This man is the Elven king himself. You’re making good progress. But.
And there’s always a but.
You might never fly again.
It’s… A lot to process. And even in the following weeks, as you regain your strength and begin moving about and exploring your new surroundings, you still struggle to wrap your head around it. Flying has been second nature to you. Instinctual. Another part of your existence as a Skyfolk. You can’t fathom a life without it.
You’re a caged, flightless bird, right now. Enji is nice. Extremely nice. Nicer than he really ought to be, all things considered. You refuse to call him King Todoroki because you like pushing his buttons, and secretly, you think he likes it too. But… There’s still something missing. This isn’t right. You need to finish your journey and return home, but you can’t do that without your flight. No matter how accommodating Enji is, it still doesn’t change the fact that you’re lounging around a golden cage and you really do not belong here.
So when your wings are deemed as healed up as they’ll ever be, you start sneaking out. You can’t get off the ground. Not yet. But you hope with enough practice, someday you’ll soar once again.
( v. )
You’re a hawk, now.
You don’t believe it, personally. Hawks are fierce, powerful, and incredible flyers - you’re weak, emotional, and barely able to slip off the ground on a good day. But Enji insists you’re a hawk, and you can’t bring yourself to argue, because nobody has ever seen your real persona before and thought so highly of it.
Maybe that’s the nature of your relationship, though. It’s difficult to tell.
You’re a fighter. You keep trying no matter how many times you fall, because you hate the idea of remaining grounded. Enji is there to catch you, to patch up your scrapes and bruises, and offer encouragement in how own unique way. And finally, when you do manage to take off and soar above the trees, you feel alive. This is what you were missing.
This is who you are.
But.
You wouldn’t be here without Enji. You’d be dead, or worse - and you’re grateful, you really are, but you don’t know how to ever repay him. Soon you’ll be stable enough to continue with your life, and you’ll need to leave and go home. Enji can’t go with you. He has a kingdom to run, and you’ve accepted that. You tell yourself it’s what’s right. That it was inevitable and this is the way things are meant to be.
But.
In the months you’ve been with the Elves, you’ve learned their culture and their customs. Maybe you don’t really fit in, but you enjoy their way of life, and you love the people you’ve met. Back home, you had friends and family, sure, but there was so much pressure - For the first time in your entire life, you feel free. Freedom is terrifying. Powerful. You crave it.
You reach a crossroads. Go home and face your responsibilities or stay and learn to enjoy your life. It’s not an easy decision to make - there was so much resting on your shoulders, and maybe there still is, because you’re expected to return, sooner or later.
But.
You’re a hawk. You’re fierce, determined, and you follow your heart.
So you stay.
Extras:
Hawks can still fly, but he reaches his limit much faster due to his previous injury. He chooses to just walk most places instead, keeping his wings tucked against his back when he’s in motion to better balance the weight.
He is a little spoon at heart, but tends to be a big spoon in practice due to his absurdly large wings. He has to sleep on his stomach or his side to get comfortable.
Hawks loves fried foods, particularly fried birds; he’s been told this could be interpreted as cannibalistic, but refuses to stop eating meat anytime soon.
Keigo was his birth name, and although he is trans, he does not find discomfort with it because of dysphoria; it’s a remnant of his parents, and Skyfolk gender is wonky anyway.
In spite of that, Hawks only allows his former tribesmen to call him Keigo; he much prefers to be called Hawks.
Writing sample:
Keigo’s been in a weird sort of state lately. The injuries haven’t exactly helped his energy levels, sure, but given he’s mostly recovered, he should be able to get out of his bed and wander. And still, he’s skipping meals. Choosing to lay around. A stranger might consider him lazy. Enji doesn’t berate him for the behavior, and Keigo considers that a miracle. He doesn’t know if he could handle judgement over this melancholy. Not like he can control it, anyhow.
So they spend the days talking. Sometimes Enji reads to him. Keigo had never imagined how deep and rich the Elven culture is - he’d heard some things, in passing. The Elves were mostly isolated, before, so whatever he had heard was mostly secondhand, and, as Keigo is now learning, incorrect.
They’re sitting in bed, Keigo pressed firmly against Enji’s side. He’s been told that Elves don’t ordinarily allow this type of contact, but Keigo’s never been pushed away, and it’s one of the few things that keeps him grounded. Enji sets aside the scroll he’d been reading from and gently runs a hand over Keigo’s feathers.
“I’ve told you much about my people, but I’ve not heard much of yours.”
Keigo stiffens. “I didn’t think you’d want to learn about them.”
“I do. I don’t even know why you ended up so far from them.”
Well, that’s fair. Keigo supposes that, at the very least, he owes an explanation. That much information is hardly a concealed secret, just… Emotional? No. That’s not the right word, but he doesn’t have any better way to describe it. He shrugs. “It’s tradition for future chieftains to travel for a year, prior to taking charge. A right of passage, you know. When they return home, they take a new name, and are given the honor of leading.” He smiles softly as he speaks, the familiarity giving him some small comfort in this bittersweet reality.
Enji frowns. “You were to be chief, then?”
“Oh, yes. I was. I won’t be, now. I can’t fly.” As if to prove his point, Keigo attempts to move his left wing, the one that took the brunt of the lightning strike. It barely twitches.
“You still could. My healers don’t know much of your anatomy, your wings might still recover.”
Keigo really, truly wants to believe him, but he’s sick and tired of getting his hopes up. He’s probably not going to regain his flight. There’s no point fixating on a fantasy. Not when it only brings disappointment. He leans closer, nuzzling his face into the crook of Enji’s neck. “Please don’t… I can’t...”
“Keigo.” Enji’s voice is strong, firm, and determined. Keigo bites at his lip, muscles tensing. “You’re strong. You want to recover, and you will.” Then, after a pause, he asks, “you’re given new names when you return, as a sign of strength?”
Hesitantly, Keigo nods. “Yeah…”
“Then allow me to give you one now. You’re a fighter. You’ve shown me that much with your… Fiery attitude.”
Oh, that’s one way to phrase it.
After a nod, Enji continues. “You’re a bird of prey, fierce. Powerful. Agile, fast, cunning, and a bit of an ass sometimes, even when you’re still recovering. But you’re a creature to be revered and awed. Like a swarm of hawks.”
“Hawks…” Keigo says, the name foreign on his tongue. “My name is… Hawks.”
Maybe, just maybe, he can get used to it, in time.

Ciel!!!
Thank u thank u!! uwu
B A S I C S
full name: Ciel Lukaevich Volkov. I have no idea if I’m getting his patronymic name right, but I know it would’ve been feminine before he changed it. He writes his name CL Volkov.
gender: Male, dfab.
sexuality: Pansexual
pronouns: He/him
O T H E R S
family: Gggg he has a very big family. He was named after his grandmother on his mother Rosemary’s side. Grandma Ciel was stoic and rad and an excellent farmhand with her wife, Ruby. I think I established that Rosemary is Ruby’s blood child. I never really thought too much on it. Either way, Ciel’s dad, Luka, is a first generation Russian immigrant and very Christian and very traditional and impossible to please. Ciel has six older brothers, listed as follows by oldest to youngest: Robert, Donovan, Peter, Micah, and Edvard. Robert and Don are a couple of asshole lumberjacks, Micah is a Good Baby Faced Boy that’s trying his best, Edvard is mostly mute and kind of a jerk, and Peter I literally just named so I have nothing on him atm. Edvard and Ciel are the closest, but they used to hate each other when they were younger.
birthplace: My setting, Candlelight Ridge, ME!
job: Chief Assistant for Reynaud Chancelier, II of Chance Inc.? I literally have written into my notes “idk what their company is called”. It’s Chance something. I gave him this position after playing Jaehee’s route in MM, 4 those who think that sounds familiar.
phobias: Oh, hm. I think he fears his dad. He fears God. He fears he’ll scare away his friends and lovers if he lets them too far in. He fears that his magical is ripping him apart (and it eventually does lmao but he gets resurrected it’s ok).
guilty pleasures: Eating at shitty diners at 3 AM; eating on the floor of his kitchen; eating cheez its and coke as his depression meal; staying up late and playing video games; hacking into rando’s emails and just, like, reading them and nothing else; hooning; hooning so hard that he physically harms the car; names all of his pokemon after food he loves; when he find a jacket that You Can Hear, u kno what I mean. A lot of his bullshit is taken directly from me, I won’t lie LOL.
M O R A L S
morality alignment?: Uhhh. Neutral Good, probably.
sins - I think all my characters are some variation of lust, but Ciel’s big one is likely sloth.
virtues - Like, all of them tbh. He’s a good guy!
T H I S - O R - T H A T
introvert/extrovert: Introvert. He’s kind of a hermit half the time.
organized/disorganized: Disorganized.
close minded/open-minded: Open-minded.
calm/anxious: Calm because he doesn’t think about Shit.
disagreeable/agreeable: Agreeable.
cautious/reckless: Reckless af.
patient/impatient: Patient.
outspoken/reserved: Hmmm. I think he can be surprisingly outspoken.
leader/follower: Leader. He’s a soft one, but a good one.
empathetic/unemphatic: Empathetic.
optimistic/pessimistic: Hmm. Probably more optimistic than pessimistic.
traditional/modern: Modern.
hard-working/lazy: Aside from work, he’s pretty lazy. He has bursts of productivity and then it fizzles away.
R E L A T I O N S H I P S
otp: This used to be Ciel/Jasper until I realized they can’t even realistically date in my setting. Ciel/Jun is where it’s at–Jun being Dub’s character whomst I stole and made 70-80 years younger but kept his Power Hungry Entity aspect.
ot3: Ciel/Thane/Beckett is where it’s at.
brotp: Ciel/Beckett bros 4 lyf.
notp: Ciel/Trent probably, because they have a gross past.

character: kate stewart :)
do I like them: Bad ass lady in a suit with a gun? Yes, please!
5 good qualities: Intelligent, tenacious, protective, brave, a strong leader
3 bad qualities: n/a (I haven’t listened to the Big Finish stuff, so I feel like any bad qualities I would pick come from the inconsistent writing in the show??)
favourite episode/etc: I’m particularly fond of her in The Zygon Invasion/Inversion
otp: I’m not a big DW shipper, so I don’t really have any actual ships for Kate. I am quite attached to pairing her with my own fictional female 13th doctor (played by Catherine Russell, of course) and really hope we get to see her with 13!
brotp: Kate & Osgood. I can totally see the argument for it being romantic, but I lean toward them as a friend/mentor relationship.
ot3: I may have some Kate/Catherine!Doctor/River on my eventual to-do list ;)
notp: Can I just say men? And probably Missy because that can only be deeply fucked up.
best quote: “Kate Stewart. Divorcee, mother of two, keen gardener, outstanding bridge player. Also chief scientific officer, Unified Intelligence Taskforce - who currently have you surrounded.”
head canon: I love the idea of Kate having grown up around Sarah Jane and her being Kate’s first major lady crush. :)

Any pressing need for a young FBI Agent: No. There were enough problems with the FBI.
Who is running the team this week? Callen.
Fashion review: Medium blue long-sleeve tee for Callen. Long sleeve charcoal grey tee for Sam. In the gym, Kensi is wearing a sleeveless workout top and blue-green exercise tights. Later in the case, she wears a white long-sleeve thermal tee and then Patricia Ruiz’s blue and tan print dress when she’s undercover. Eric is wearing a tan and off-white pullover sweater over a medium blue dress shirt.
Music: “Know Me Better” by Madd3e featuring Bluesforthehorn is playing while Kensi and Fatima are working out. “Start It Up” by Ziggy Marley is playing in the bar when Kensi talks to Callen about his trip with Anna. “Running” by Heldo Negro is playing when Sam goes to see Katherine.
Any notable cut scene: Nope.
Quote: Eric: “Don't get me wrong. I... I love it here. I love what we do here. But Nell taking this big leap has kind of gotten me thinking maybe I could, too.” Deeks: “Whoa. All right, let's not start talking crazy. Eric: “Crazy? What's so crazy about that?” Deeks: “I don't know, like, w-what would you do? Where would you go?” Eric: “Where would I not go, Deeks? Did you know that at least one of the FANG companies recruits me on the monthly?” Deeks: “No, I did not know that.” Eric: “I could have been CTO of Dollar Shave Club. I fixed last year's FaceTime bug. Hell, I was in the room when Kevin created Instagram. And now my friend from SF, he wants to create this... company with me. I'm just really proud of Nell.” Deeks: “You're on a first-name basis with Kevin Systrom?” Eric: “That's your takeaway?” Deeks: “No. My takeaway is that you're incredibly talented and you could be working anywhere making millions of dollars, but instead you choose to work here because you want to make a difference. And I appreciate that, and, more importantly... I appreciate you.”
Anything else: A guy is sitting his car as two friends break into a home. The police drive by but race past the getaway vehicle. When the friends get out of the house with a sack each of stolen goods, they stop dead in their tracks. The house across the street from where they broke in is engulfed in flames.
Callen returns from vacation with little reaction from Sam. He’s surprised by Sam’s lack of reaction. Callen is waiting for Sam to say something so Sam catches Callen up. Sam’s good with Roundtree, who is a little green. Nell took an unofficial official leave of absence. This is not what Callen was looking to hear. Sam isn’t sure where Callen’s going – he’s hoping to his desk.
Callen tells Sam he’d like to get this over with. Sam doesn’t know what “this is. Knowing Sam has questions about his vacation with Anna, Callen wants to answer them now. “For the next five minutes.” Sam asks if they had a good time. As Callen discusses the vacation, Sam cuts him off – “I’m good.”
Kensi and Fatima are working out in the gym with Kensi reminding Fatima they shouldn’t overdo it – they have a full work day ahead of them. She also jokes that Deeks would have bailed on Fatima’s work-out routine right away. Kensi enjoys working out with Fatima – changing it up. Fatima thinks Kensi and Deeks are always changing things up. No, Kensi tells her. Work is always changing things up for them. At home, “we are, like slow and steady monogamous lifers.” They are NCIS agents by day, accountants by night. Fatima jokes about keeping it between them. Kensi thinks that’s a good idea, Deeks isn’t her biggest fan right now.
A limping Deeks – foot in a walking boot - walks into the office through the back entrance. He sees Eric and tries to avoid him by hiding in the burn room (Nell did that in the last episode). That plan is partly successful until Deeks leaves the burn room and hits the hard floor with the walking boot. Eric hears him.
Deeks asks how Eric is doing. When Eric says great, Deeks tells him not to change the subject. Eric doesn’t think he’s changing the subject, which was the “obligatory morning salutation.” Since Eric isn’t ready to talk, Deeks isn’t ready to talk about how he broke his big toe. As things get weird, Eric gets a call that they have a case.
The case is the fire in East Hollywood, Eric tells an arriving Callen and Sam. There is no connection to NCIS. Instead, they are being brought in because the DOJ wants to know why the house – an FBI safe house – went up in flames. The concern is for a mole or leak. Eric has Kensi and Fatima talking to the FBI Agent in charge of the case in the boat shed. Callen asks about Deeks, who broke his toe. Callen and Sam are off to the crime scene.
A now not pregnant Agent Rush walks into the boat shed. Her son is “an adorable little dictator.” Rush is going to pump breast milk while they discuss the case. Rush is not sure how the fire started, she tells Kensi and Fatima as the pump starts. Fatima is a little distracted but Rush thinks if she can ignore what’s going on with her body, so can Fatima. Kensi, by the way, equally distracted and has questions. Fatima steers the conversation back to the fire.
Nobody was hurt during the fire. There were two agents in the house with Patricia Ruiz, a Venezuelan political activist seeking asylum in the US. Ruiz is in a new safe house – Rush is not sharing her location.
Coming up the badly burned safe house, Callen and Sam meet LAFD Chief Jefferson and the woman is a delight. Since she was at site of the fire for hours “and I’m old,”, she’s loading up on energy drinks – “no judging.” Callen tells her that her choice of energy drinks is his favorite. Jefferson is fine with that but knows Sam is judging. Callen agrees.
The safe house is an old building. When the fire began, the electrical in the building went up right away. So did all the wood and paneling. Since LAFD knows what they’re doing, the fire was out in 34-minutes. Callen asks if the Chief knows how it started. Still early but nobody got hurt and none of the other homes on the block caught fire – that’s a good thing.
Sam brings up possible arson since it is an FBI safe house. Oh, Chief Jefferson is not having any of that. Sam can’t just throw around the “A-Bomb” (arson) until her crew has a good look at the fire. When Sam asks if they can hang around while the crew looks at the fire, Chief Jefferson is on board. Even comes up with energy drinks for Callen and Sam, aka “the big fella”, since the “poor thing looks parched.” I love her. When she leaves, Callen asks why is Sam throwing “A-Bombs”? “I’m parched.”
Kensi and Fatima watch as Agent Rush struggles to put on a girdle/back brace. While Rush uses the restroom, Kensi calls in an update to Callen. While Callen is on the phone, Chief Jefferson, goddess of fire, returns. She found evidence of an accelerant – it looks like arson. Callen thinks it is also an attempted murder.
In Ops, Deeks is giving his “buddy” Eric a shoulder rub. Deeks wants Eric to know he’s there for him during the springtime of his discontent. Eric tries to work as Deeks goes on about the Ops not having the same vibe without Nell. Trying to get Deeks away from the topic, Eric calls Nell a beam of light who will be missed. Deeks wants to share more of Eric’s feelings. Eric is going to work but Deeks can talk about Nell as much as he “wants-slash-needs.” Having seen “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”, Deeks knows that this is not how the healing process works. Eric gets things back on track asking Deeks about his toe.
Walking Rush back to her vehicle, Kensi really pushes that NCIS wants to help on the case. Rush appreciates the help but her bosses want this to be an in-house case. Before Rush gets into her car, Fatima asks to see a picture of the baby. Saying that she doesn’t like to force people to look at her son, Rush pulls out her phone with lots of photos.
The photos are funny, as is Rush’s narration. While this is going on, Kensi puts a tracker on Rush’s SUV. When she slides back into the conversation, Fatima asks what is the boy’s name. Cash was not named for Johnny Cash but for all the money he is going to cost. She and her husband feel it is their personal PSA. As Rush gets in her car, Kensi asks what motherhood is really like. Rush calls it the best thing she’s ever done. That’s what Kensi thought.
As Rush drives away, Fatima asks Kensi if the tracker was really necessary. With Rush blowing off their offers of help, Kensi thinks it is since she could be the mole.
A relocated Eric – now in the gadget room – is found by Deeks, who wants an update. Patricia Ruiz is a college professor and a vocal part of the resistance against the Venezuelan government. Deeks thinks she has a lot of enemies. Ruiz entered the US four days earlier under an alias and has been with FBI since she arrived. Stuck in bureaucratic limbo, Ruiz is waiting for asylum but obviously someone from Venezuela found out where she was hiding.
Pulling video from surveillance cameras, Eric found the fellow in the car and his burglar buddies. Rick Lim was the getaway driver. Lim is on his way to the boat shed where Kensi and Fatima are waiting. Deeks wants to talk some more about Eric’s feelings but Eric’s phone chirps – Agent Rush stopped at a house in Venice. Eric is going to update Callen and Sam with Deeks following right behind.
Lim begs Kensi and Fatima not to tell his Mom – he’ll do whatever he needs to if it makes things go away. And he’d like them to know he was just the driver. He sells out Chris and Anthony as the burglars. Kensi and Fatima are a little confused. Seems Anthony works in landscaping and knew that the homeowners would be away for a week. Kensi tells him things make so much more sense – “why nobody called in the robbery.” Now “Ricky boy” is confused so Kensi clears things up.
When Ricky asks why he’s there, Fatima wants to know about the fire. Assuring Kensi and Fatima he had nothing to do with the fire, he saw nothing. He remembered the police cruiser and he remembered a dog. All of a sudden, he remembered a man by the fire. A large man – 220 pounds of so – walking toward the fire after it started. Rick thought the man was going into the fire to rescue someone but he didn’t.
Callen and Sam pull up in front of safe house number two. They’re torn – the FBI doesn’t want them to be part of the case and the DOJ does. Callen is willing to sit there and let the moment take them – much like his vacation. An annoyed Agent Rush comes out of the house to confront Callen and Sam. She asks if they followed her or worse, did Kensi put a tracker on her car. She finds that possibility low and cruel. When Sam brings up the DOJ wanting NCIS involved, Rush assures them the FBI has it covered. A scream and the sound of broken glass comes from the house.
Callen, Sam and Rush make their way into the house. Sam finds a body in the kitchen when there is another scream from the backyard. Two masked men are pulling Patricia Ruiz into their pick-up truck. The men run when they see Callen and Sam. Rush attends to Ruiz. The kidnappers split up with Callen following one, Sam the other. Callen runs into a group of surfers and loses his target. Sam’s chase is stopped when he is hit by a car.
Ruiz is grateful that Callen and Sam saved her life. Sam asks Rush if the FBI really does have this under control. Ruiz and Rush are going to the boat shed with NCIS Agent Paulo Martinez. With the abduction of Ruiz likely being a state-sanctioned action, NCIS can’t find out who is running things. Sam thinks they have someone inside the FBI. Two safe houses were compromised.
Walking into the boat shed, Rush admitted the FBI messed up again. Kensi introduces herself and Fatima to Patricia Ruiz. Kensi and Ruiz have similar haircuts. Kensi tells Ruiz she’s safe now. It is a statement Ruiz has heard before. As Fatima makes some coffee for Ruiz, Kensi talks to Rush who calls the FBI’s handling of the case “triage”. Since NCIS has been ordered to help the FBI, Rush wants to know what Kensi needs. Kensi wants names of everyone involved with the Ruiz case. “Screw my chain of command, I’ll tell you everything.”
Driving, Sam has questions. Today’s attempt on Ruiz was a kidnapping to bring Ruiz back to Venezuela. Yesterday’s fire was arson, which would have killed Ruiz. Callen thinks the fire was more to smoke out Ruiz and grab her outside. Sam is worried about a reward – if Venezuela has a bounty on her return, teams of people may be hunting her.
Rush’s list is long – “the FBI does not travel light.” While Kensi is worried the list is a stall tactic, Rush assures her “we are as bloated and inefficient an agency as this list would indicate.” The list is 216 agents.
The list and the level of bureaucracy at the FBI annoys Eric. “They’re obviously not the lean, mean fighting machine we are here at NCIS,” Deeks tells Eric before wondering if Eric is transferring his unhappiness … Deeks’s phone rings. There’s been another fire.
A factory is on fire. Chief Johnson is handling the fire with several firehouses’ worth of firefighters. Asked how her crews are holding up, the fire is big but nothing like the wildfires they’ve worked over the last few years. Johnson confirms this too was arson with the same signature as the safe house fire. Eric calls Callen – the factory has no connection to the FBI.
Deeks and Eric on their way to Ops again. Using surveillance cameras in the area, Eric has footage from all the blocks around the second safe house. Since the kidnappers got away on foot, they can send photos of all the pedestrians in the area to Ruiz to see if she recognizes any of them. As for the factory, it was last used in 2016. Nobody was inside. The safe house fire had three people inside. The methods of arson were the same but the fires were different.
Eric found similarities, however. Both the house and the factory are the same distance from the same fire house – just in different directions. Both fires were called in by the same male voice – probably the arsonist. Deeks starts asking Eric how the fires and the attempts on Ruiz are connected. Loudly, Eric doesn’t know – he was just excited about matching the 9-1-1 calls while Deeks is asking insightful questions. Deeks tells Eric he misses Nell too. When Eric is ready to talk about it, Deeks is there. He’s also there for a hug but Eric isn’t.
At first, Ruiz isn’t having much luck looking at the pedestrians until she comes across a man who smiled at her from her car while she was being brought from the first safe house to the second one. Rush is not pleased. While Fatima goes to run the image through facial rec, FBI Agent Munger walks into the boat shed. Rush knows she’s in trouble. Munger wants to know what agency’s facial recognition program will be used because this case started with the FBI and will stay with the FBI.
In Ops, Eric has ID’d the man Ruiz recognized as Miguel Perez traveling with five others – four men and a woman – to LAX. They all work for the Venezuelan Armed Forces.
In interrogation, Munger is yelling at Rush as Ruiz sits between them. Kensi and Fatima are watching this on the plasma in the main room. Kensi is uncomfortable watching but Fatima can’t look away. Kensi gets a call from Eric about Perez. While Eric is updating her, Munger leaves with Patricia. Rush couldn’t stop them.
Rush gives Kensi and Fatima a rundown on Munger’s vehicle but doesn’t believe he’s the leak. As Eric is searching for the car, Deeks arrives with a table. “After a short and sweet decade of watching you and Nell work in this dark and uninviting cave,” he figured out where Perez and his team are staying – the downtown Marriott. They may not have Ruiz’s location, but they can take out Perez’s team.
Callen and Sam take Kensi, wearing Ruiz’s dress, to a meet on the beach with Perez and his team. Fatima is in overwatch. Perez is not happy Callen and Sam found him, especially since he doesn’t know Callen and Sam. Sam tells Perez they are friends of the cause. Perez wants to see Ruiz. Callen pushes Kensi to the ground. When she looks up, Callen and Sam yell “federal agents” and the usual happens. This is a more fighting than shooting set-up. Sam takes out two of the four men, Callen one, Kensi gets Perez.
Back in the Armory, Callen gets a text that Ruiz was given asylum. He also tells the team that the fires had nothing to do with Ruiz. The arsonist did not know the safe house was a safe house. He set the factory on fire “because that’s what arsonists do.” LAFD found the arsonist in-house – he was a firefighter “with a very complex relationship with fire.” It is a twisted case of hero syndrome.
Eric is grateful for Deeks’s help. Deeks is surprised Eric took Nell’s departure so well. Eric isn’t. He loves what they do but Nell is taking a “big leap”. Eric would like to take that leap. Deeks wants to know where Eric would go. Saying he gets job offers once a monthly from the FANG companies, Dollar Shave Club offered him their CTO job, he fixed a big bug for Facetime, he was in the room when Kevin went live with Instagram. With friends looking to create a company with Eric, he’s proud Nell is brave enough to move on. Deeks tells Eric he’s “incredibly talented” with lots of opportunities to make million but he chooses to make a difference. Deeks appreciates that and he appreciates Eric. The two hug. Eric is off to the bar.
Kensi apologizes to Deeks but he doesn’t want to talk about it. She is really sorry she left a heavy box in the middle of the hallway. Despite being athletic, he couldn’t see it and…. Kensi makes a cute face which Deeks promises her he’s not falling for “those reindeer games.” Kensi promises he will.
At the bar, Kensi wants to know about Callen’s vacation. As he’s opening up, Sam leaves. Deeks trips behind the bar. Kensi begs Callen to say he left the bottles of wine in the middle of the bar. Deeks is yelling for Kensi.
Sam walks up to a home on the beach. Katherine is there with a nice scotch. After some banter, she invites him inside. Sam has been looking forward to seeing her all day.
What head canon can be formed from here: I get the feeling Eric is right behind Nell when it comes from the door. This is the second episode where Eric’s San Francisco opportunities are calling.
I’d like Chief Johnson and bookstore lady Carla to met.
Episode number: Episode 20 of season 11. Episode 260 overall.
