Counterfeit goods is 위조품. Because many famous street style brands are very expensive and nearly impossible to get in South Korea, there is a huge counterfeit culture in the country.

Brands like Supreme, Stüssy, and Off White can be seen sold on street, but it isn’t real. I remember when I first visited Korea and went to Namdaemun Market I saw a lot of counterfeit clothing.

슈프림, 슈투시, 오프 화이트 같은 브랜드는 거리에서 팔릴 수 있지만 실제는 아니다. 한국을 처음 방문했을 때, 남대문 시장에 갔을 때, 저는 많은 위조된 옷을 봤습니다.

미나: 유미 씨, 백화점에 가려고 하는데 같이 안 갈래요?

유미: 마침 잘 됐네요. 유행하는 옷이 모자라요. 큰 가디건 스타일을 입어 보고 싶어요. 뭐 사고 싶어요?

Mina: Yumi I’m planning on going to the department store. Do you want to go with me?

Yumi: You asked just in time. I’m lacking popular clothes. I want to try the oversized cardigan style. What do you want to buy?

Mina: I’m going to find earrings I saw in a magazine. I plan to buy 2 suits and a pair of dress shoes because of work.

Yumi:  Then that should be easy to find. Should we go now?

Mina: Which suits do I look good in?

Yumi: The black suit with the red heels looks really good. The green dress also fits well.

Mina: I need to buy black heels, not red heels. Next, let’s find some trendy clothes.

경성의복 (Kyungsung Clothes) is specialty clothes store in Seoul.

It is a place where people can rent vintage clothing, jewelry, hats and other accessories.

커플 옷

Matching outfits have emerged as a popular style for dating young people, particularly in college towns and youthful neighborhoods.

짝짓기 옷은 특히 대학가나 젊은 동네에서 젊은이들과 데이트하는 인기 있는 스타일로 떠올랐다.

The style is called 커플룩 (couple look) or, for the more discrete pairing, 시밀러룩 (similar look).

Couples might match basics on their own, like t-shirts or sweatshirts in complementary colors, or go all out and find pre-designed outfits at a couple’s clothes store.

StyleNanda is a South Korea-based clothes brand. The company was founded in 2004 by Nanda. It had further expanded internationally and established branches in several countries, namely Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Japan and Thailand.

These days oversized clothing is super popular in Korean street style. Oversized shirts, cardigans, and jackets give outfits a relaxed and casual feel.

요즘 한국 길거리에서는 오버사이즈 옷이 많이 인기를 끌고 있다. 오버사이즈 셔츠, 가디간, 자겟은 편안하고 평범하게 느낌을 준다.

Parts of 한복

First is the 저고리 (jeogori), and it makes up the top part of the 한복 (hanbok). Men’s jeogori is larger and simplistic while a woman’s jeogori is pretty short and is characterized by delicate decorations and curved lines. 

The jeogori is made up of the gil, git, dongjeong, goreum and sleeves.

저고리는 길하고 깃하고 동정하고 고름하고 소매로 이루어져 있어요.

The chima (치마) is the women’s outer skirt. The underskirt, or petticoat layer, is called sokchima (속치마).

Baji (바지) refers to the bottom part of the men's hanbok. Compared to western style pants, it does not fit tightly. The roomy design is aimed at making the clothing ideal for sitting on the floor. The word 바지 is commonly used in Korea for any type of pants.

Hanbok as a Power Symbol

The full shape of the hanbok emphasizes the wearer's authority and dignity. While this may have been impractical, it was nevertheless a feature that made hanbok a reflection of social status and propriety. The simple harmony of the color palette created by limiting the number of bright colors used places greater weight on the wearer's character over the hanbok's decoration.

Certain hanbok designs represented the social ranking of the wearer. The king, for example, was represented by the dragon and the queen by the phoenix.

Tiger designs were used to represent military officials and were commonly placed on the shoulders, fronts and backs of their court robes. Civil officials were represented by the crane, an animal believed to be pure and resilient.

Lee Jong-suk is a South Korean actor and model.

Jung Ho Yeon is a South Korean fashion model. Vogue has dubbed her as “Korea’s next top model”, and she appeared on the namesake show’s 4th season (where she was placed second).

She started modeling at 16.

When is hanbok worn today?

For modern day Koreans, hanbok are formal clothing worn during holidays and special occasions. 

Children wear hanbok on their first birthday.

Adults wear it for their wedding ceremony or major events within the family, including funerals.

While in Korea many enjoy putting on hanbok by renting one from hanbok rental shops.

If you wear hanbok into the castles in Seoul, like Gyeongbokgung, you can enter for free.

한 현민

Han Hyunmin is known as South Korea’s first black model. His father is Nigerian and his mother is Korean. He has lived in South Korea his entire life, and was raised in Itaewon, a foreigner district in Seoul.

A modeling agency discovered Han via his Instagram at age 15 while he was still in school. They arranged a meeting and met at a coffee shop where they asked him to walk and signed him on the spot.

Hanbok is typically described as having “8 Beauties”

1. The beauty of structure - Referring to the simple structural beauty and rhythmic flow that complement the body’s movements.

2. The beauty of form - The hanbok radiates a natural physical beauty in its attractive silhouette and lines, which allow for unrestrained movement of the body.

Fashion in the 90s [90년대에 패션]
