Ahead of viewing the exploits of another famous alchemist Nicolas Flamel (Brontis Jodorowsky) in the @crimesofgrindelwald, why not watch the seminal surrealistic/avant-garde/symbolism-infused Alchemist-starring masterpiece created by his father, Alejandro Jodorowsky? One of my favourite films of all time. #Jodorowsky #TheHolyMountain #BrontisJodorowsky #AlejandroJodorowsky #TheCrimesOfGrindelwald #Alchemy #Alchemist https://www.instagram.com/p/BpepCuYFQRg/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1cnmc0zbl5iqa

Thoughts : El Topo (1970)
Tumblr media
As bad as it sounds, growing up an American film fan severely stunted my exposure to films from other parts of the world.  The inclusive, competitive nature of Hollywood (and the indie directors of America that strive to compete) has a trickle-down effect that reaches the audience, and your focus on movies becomes singular in a nature that, with motive, could border on xenophobic.  I was aware of Italian, French, British and South American cinema on a peripheral level, but I had yet to take the plunge.  This all changed in the late 1990s when a chance viewing of Federico Fellini’s 8 1/2 completely blew my mind and opened up a NEED to seek films from around the world.
During the subsequent years of discovery, my awareness of different genres, directors and famous films from around the world widened, and my tastes became more diverse.  I thought I’d seen most everything there was to offer, but the discovery of Alexandro Jodorowsky was eye-opening in the biggest and boldest ways imaginable.  While many people’s introduction was The Holy Mountain, my introduction to his beautiful madness was the abstract and absurdist western masterpiece that is El Topo.
El Topo (Alexandro Jodorowsky) and his son (Brontis Jodorowsky) discover a recently massacred town where the women and children have been killed in the street, the horses have been mutilated, and the men hung in the temple.  Further down the road, they discover the group of bandits that committed the atrocity and their evil leader known as The Colonel (David Silva).  El Topo kills them all, liberating a group of captured monks and a female slave of The Colonel whom El Topo names Mara (Mara Lorenzio).  El Topo leaves his son with the monks and continues on his journey with Mara, who persuades him to change his journey into one of spiritual enlightenment.  She convinces him that he must kill four masters, each representing a different religion, ideology or philosophy.  El Topo wrestles with his judgement and guilt in completing the mission, only to be portrayed (and basically crucified) by Mara.  His resurrection leads to true enlightenment and the undertaking of a new redemption-based journey.
Upon release and in the decades following, this film was equally as controversial as it was iconic.  There is really no passive way to have a reaction to this film, and the critical and audience reception of the film in the wake of its release if proof of that fact.  It won many awards in film festivals, but many critics and viewers were turned off by a litany of the films aspects : the gore and violence displayed, the amount of nudity (male and female), the systematic taking down of ideologies and symbols with spiritual or philosophical weight to them, the way sex is used as a power struggle, and so on.  The visceral reactions may have something to do with the fact that the film is such a meditative journey in itself, and doubling down on the heaviness visually offers the viewer little to no ‘escape’ in the way a traditional blockbuster release does.  Instead, you are forced to think on polarizing topics and actions throughout, possibly coming out of the film changed in a way.
Jodorowsky’s ability to direct, write, score and star in a movie of this scale is astounding.  The man has always been considered one of the truly unique cinematic visionaries, on the level of a Stanley Kubrick, Andrei Tarkovsky, Jean Luc-Godard and so on.  The visual scale of this film alone is breathtaking... be it a gunfight amidst a ranch full of rabbits, a group of bandits accosting a captive woman with extremely phallic lizards, divining water from a stone via a pistol, or any other number of images from this film, most every frame stays with you in a haunting and powerful way.  Jordowsky plays a pied piper of sorts in terms of his commitment to the role, making it impossible for the rest of the cast to not fully invest in his vision.  The music comments beautifully on the proceedings of the film, mixing many forceful percussive elements with lush and contemplative string and woodwind based movements.  The desert setting provides a solid backdrop without taking away from the actions and choices of the characters followed.
Considering this film is nearly 50 years old, it’s a shame that it has only been commercially available for 20 or so.  You may have to do a special order for this one, as it has yet to make it to the major streaming services or digital storefronts, but investing in this film is well worth your time if you are a true lover of innovative and compelling cinema.

Second installment in the series, we begin to see the danger in following Grindelwald, Dumbledore and Scamander attempt to thwart him before it’s too late. (MyGod what will the next THREE movies contain?!) Ah I fell asleep during the midnight associate showing at work - doesn’t seem like I missed much, Grindelwald’s ramping up his war on muggles and now he’s got Credence’s Obscurial on his side.....While being visually stunning I found it kind of a blah movie. Do we Need these like 3 filler movies? It felt kind of like we were running in place - even if we’re moving towards the final showdown between Dumbledore and Grindelwald. I think I was initially excited for these movies as yay more wizarding world, like with The Cursed Child; but now they just seem like cash grabs. Wish we could’ve gotten more info on the creatures we did see, like the kelpie, that chinese cat thing (a Chinese Zouwu, thank you IMDb), the Maledictus (how/why does Nagini get involved with Voldemort if she’s now with Credence and Grindelwald? I don’t want to wait through three more movies to find out! gahh) Holy skull hookah, Grindelwald! Also I was slightly distracted for like the whole movie by how much #JudeLaw looks like an older Justin Timberlake. I may have to reserve judgement for this one until I (oh god) watch all Five of these movies. I know people did not like the reveal about Credence, and unless she wants to kinda sorta contradict everything she’s written before, I feel like it’s most likely a red herring only told to get Credence be on Grindelwald’s side/do what he wants, but idk. #ssmovieof2018 #adventure #family #fantasy #EddieRedmayne #KatherineWaterston #DanFogler #AlisonSudol #JohnnyDepp #KevinGuthrie #CarmenEjogo #WolfRoth #ZoëKravitz #CallumTurner #EzraMiller #PoppyCorbyTuech #VictoriaYeates #ClaudiaKim #ÓlafurDarriÓlafsson #FionnaGlascott #JamieCampbellBower #TobyRegbo #BrontisJodorowsky writers: #JKRowling (written by/based upon characters created by) director: #DannyYates movie of 2018 number 41) #FantasticBeasts2TheCrimesofGrindelwald #FantasticBeasts2 #TheCrimeofGrindelwald https://www.instagram.com/p/BrAdK9THAQV/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1rgmh6enw11p5

A pair of new images from Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald have landed online, and I’m not sure the world is ready for Hot Dumbledore. Indeed, we knew Jude Law would be filling the role of the famous wizard in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequel, and while the initial cast image offered a first glimpse at Lawin costume, this new photo gives a much better look at Law’s…

The Definitive Cult Spaghetti Western. The movie that started the whole midnight/cult movie thing, thanks to John Lennon, George Harrison, and Allen Klein, the Beatles' manager, who helped get it distribution across the US. The only way I can describe this one (and the previous one too) is OMG; but in like a good, weird, time-released, “the more I think about it, the more I like it(?)” OMG. I mean just watch these two for yourself, because OMG. This one was like 2 movies in 1, which (spoiler alert) connect at the end, so much happens in the first hour and then you realize there’s STILL a little over an hour left. It reminded my sister of The Fall, and I really felt that when we saw the first 3 villains and all the Masters he went on to fight in the first hour. Not as overtly religious as The Holy Mountain this one did have visual spiritualism and some religious symbolism but it mostly felt like a bunch of folklore/folktales woven together to make a feature length film (which may or may not be the basis for a local religion somewhere). Jodorowsky wanted to make a sequel, which may have starred Marilyn Manson(?!), but that eventually got made into a comic book (“Sons of El Topo”) which i’ll have to check out sometime. Only a few questions/observations: >apparently you aren’t truely man enough, even at 7yo, for clothes until you’ve been left with some friers? >Mara, where were her clothes coming from? >that one guy could paint and braid hair with his feet better than I can with my hands. >All that sand! looked so coarse, and rough, and irritating - bet it got everywhere. This one I would also buy if I found it somewhere. #drama #western #acidwestern #cult #midnightmovie #spaghettiwestern #BrontisJodorowsky #AlfonsoArau #JoséLuisFernández #AliJunco #RobertJohn #MaraLorenzio #PaulaRomo #DavidSilva #HéctorMartinez #JuanJoséGurrola #BerthaLomeli #VíctorFosado #AlishaNewton #AgustínIsunza #TooMuchPerfectionIsAMistake written & directed by: #AlejandroJodorowsky (as #AlexandroJodorowsky) movie of 2017 number 13) #ElTopo
