Best Time to Visit Java, Indonesia: A Seasonal Guide
Java – This region of Indonesia has intrigued me for as long as I can remember. Growing up in Odisha, a state rich with maritime history in the eastern part of India, we were regaled with stories of ancient voyages from our homeland to Java, Bali, and Sumatra. At that time, I had no idea how Java would be like if I ever got to see it in person. Then Java happened on our 11th anniversary this year. And oh boy, what do I even say about this wondrous island. Not one, not two, but home to a myriad of natural wonders, Java gifted us many once-in-a lifetime experiences on this one trip.
In a handful of days, we watched a surreal sunrise over an active volcano, then hiked to a mountain under a sky full of stars to watch a super rare blue fire and an enchanting yet acidic volcanic crater lake, climbed down a challenging path to witness the most magnificent waterfall that looked straight out of the Avatar world; And met the warmest and the kindest people at every step who made us feel like home. Java left us speechless, literally!
Tumblr media
If you want to experience the magic of Java like we did, here is our complete guide to help you plan your trip.
Good Time to Visit Java
The Dry season of May to October is ideal to visit Java with pleasant weather conditions and minimal rainfall. We visited during June 1st week and the weather was sunny and pleasant most of the time, except some rain on two afternoons. But it was not too bad and we were able to carry on with our outdoor plans.
Time required and What to cover
Java is a large and diverse island with varied natural beauty, including an array of natural wonders, iconic historical sites, vibrant cities and rich cultural heritage. So the number of days required to visit Java largely depends on your interest and destinations you want to cover. But overall, 12-14 days is an ideal amount of time for exploring different parts of the island.
Since we had limited time (9 days) and were most interested in Ijen Crater, Mount Bromo and the temples, we zeroed on East and Central Java for our trip. If you have additional 3-4 days, then West Java can also be included in the itinerary.
Itinerary for East and Central Java
We finalised our itinerary after taking into account a lot of factors, including our time of arrival, entry and exit points, train schedule as well as tours planned. So you may have to tweak it a bit depending on your situation.
Out of the 9 days we had, 1 full day was simply gone in reaching our 1st destination (Banyuwangi) and last day of the trip was reserved  for traveling back home. So we ideally had 7 full days, of which we spent 5 days exploring East Javaand 2 days in Central Java. Read More….

Mount Bromo, Updated Destination Review To Latest Informa
Mount Bromo, Updated Destination Review To Latest Informa
Mount Bromo (2,329 meters above sea level) is an active volcano located in East Java, Indonesia, which borders directly on the districts of Malang, Probolinggo, Pasuruan, and Lumajang. Known as one of the most popular tourist destinations in Indonesia because of its sunrise and beautiful panorama of the surrounding landscape.
It attracts many tourists from all over the world to witness its beauty firsthand. Bromo is also the homeland of the Tengger tribe, who have inhabited this highland since 1,115 AD and have traditionally maintained their customs and culture, adding to the appeal of Bromo for tourists.
In addition, together with Mount Semeru, Mount Bromo is also part of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, which is a habitat for various types of plants and animals such as deer, muntjac, and various bird species, whose existence is crucial for preserving the ecosystem and the natural surroundings of Bromo.
Visitors can hike up to the mountain peak or take a horse ride to get closer to the volcanic crater and then cross the whispering sands to take photos in the savanna with the Teletubbies hills in the background. Bromo is also a popular spot for photography enthusiasts and extreme activities such as paragliding.
Therefore, Mount Bromo is an extraordinary place for nature lovers and adventurers. Visitors can enjoy beautiful natural scenery, learn about local culture and traditions, and engage in various outdoor activities such as hiking, paragliding, and more.
3 Entrance Gates: Malang, Pasuruan, Probolinggo
• Via Malang City (Tumpang Route)
Malang is chosen as a transit destination before visiting Bromo because it has many tourist attractions such as Jatim Park 1, 2, and 3, Museum Angkut, and Museum Satwa. In addition, Malang also provides a variety of hotels to stay in ranging from backpacker class to 5-star hotels suitable for families.
Best deal! Bromo Tour from Malang only for $43
From Malang to Bromo, you can head east to the Tumpang area. Then continue to the Poncokusumo area, then to Gubukklakah Village – Ngadas Village. Ngadas Village is the entrance to Bromo from Malang and also a rest area or Jeep rental location. After that, you will pass through the Jemplang area, there is a junction, turn left (if you go straight to Ranupane Village / Mount Semeru climbing post).
After turning left, you will arrive at the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, precisely through the Padang Savana / Teletubbies Hill area. For those who want to hunt for sunrise, usually the Jeep will directly head to Penanjakan, but for those who don’t (Panorama Tour), the Jeep will usually pass directly to the crater area.
• Via Pasuruan (Wonokitri Route)
There are 2 routes to get to Bromo from Pasuruan, namely Purwodadi / Nongkojajar and Pasrepan. The route through Nongkojajar is frequently used by tourists from Surabaya/Malang. The route goes from Purwodadi, towards the Nongkojajar area and from there to Tosari. Then, head to the village of Wonokitri, which is the Pasuruan entrance to Bromo.
Another route through Pasuruan can be taken if you go through the city center of Pasuruan. The route goes from Pasuruan city to the Warungdowo area, then continues to Ranggeh and Pasrepan. From Pasrepan, continue the journey to Puspo until reaching Tosari.
After arriving in Tosari, the journey still needs to be continued to the village of Wonokitri Bromo. In this village, tourists usually take a break and switch to a Jeep/Toyota hardtop 4×4 to reach the Bromo tourist area.
• Via Probolinggo (Sukapura Route)
If you are coming from the East (Bali, Ijen, and Jember), the Probolinggo route via Sukapura may be the best choice for you. This route has relatively wide and less winding roads compared to other routes, making it suitable for those who come with a large vehicle such as a bus. There are plenty of spacious parking lots available for your vehicle as well.
If you are coming from Surabaya, you can take the Surabaya-Probolinggo toll road. After exiting the toll gate, enter the Sukapura area and then head to Ngadisari. Continue driving until you reach Cemoro Lawang. The village of Cemoro Lawang is the gateway to the Bromo area, and this route also allows you to visit the enchanting Madakaripura waterfall.
New Rules for Mount Bromo Tourism After the Pandemic
The Mount Bromo tourist area has been reopened by agreement between East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa and the governments of Probolinggo, Malang, Lumajang, Pasuruan districts, and Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.
Although it has been reopened, there are nine health practices that must be followed when visiting Mount Bromo during the New Normal period. The Mount Bromo management does not accept on-site ticket purchases to reduce physical contact and density in the tourist area.
All visitors who want to enter the Mount Bromo area must be in good physical condition. To ensure this, visitors must bring a health certificate and not have Upper Respiratory Tract Infection (URTI).
Before entering the Mount Bromo tourist area, the body temperature of each visitor will be measured. If the body temperature is above 37.30, a second temperature check will be performed every 5 minutes. If the temperature is still high, the visitor is not allowed to enter the Mount Bromo tourist area.
To maintain hand hygiene, all visitors are required to bring hand sanitizer or liquid soap.
At the Gunung Bromo tourist attraction, not all visitors are allowed to gather. You must always maintain a distance from others and follow the applicable rules.
Because the elderly and children are vulnerable groups to the spread of the Covid-19 virus, there are age restrictions for visitors. The minimum age for visiting Gunung Bromo is 14 years old and the maximum age is 60 years old.
To prevent the spread of the virus through droplets, all visitors to the Gunung Bromo area must wear masks and gloves.
To make the tourist area safer and more comfortable, visitors must bring their own food, drinks, and worship equipment. These items cannot be shared to avoid exchanging them.
If coughing or sneezing, visitors must observe proper etiquette by covering their nose and mouth with a tissue or inside of the elbow. Visitors are also strictly prohibited from spitting indiscriminately!
To prevent crowds and tourists, the management of Gunung Bromo tourism has limited the number of visitors with a quota. The quota applies to all tourist attractions in the Gunung Bromo area, such as Bukit Cinta which can only be visited by 28 people/day, Pananjakan with 178 people/day, Bukit Keduh with 86 people/day, Savana Teletapit with 347 people/day, and Mentigen with 100 people/day.
You are also urged not to approach the crater of Mount Bromo during the New Normal. The safe radius of the crater is 1 km.
How to Get to Bromo from Malang, Surabaya, Jakarta
Every year, Bromo attracts not only local tourists but also international visitors. Here is a brief guide for tourists who are planning to visit Bromo from Jakarta, Malang, or Surabaya.
• How to Go to Bromo from Jakarta
Traveling to Bromo by train can be cheaper than by car. Economy class trains are more comfortable and cheaper. From Jakarta, you can take the train from Pasar Senen to Malang Kota Baru Station. From Malang, you can also continue your journey directly to Bromo.
Besides Malang, you can also stop at Probolinggo by changing the main route. Then continue your journey by bus. Moreover, if you go to Bromo by plane, it is relatively easier. There are quite a lot of flights to Surabaya, especially Juanda Airport. After that, you can continue your journey to Bromo by public transportation or rental car.
If you are using public transportation, on certain dates there is also a Damri bus available that goes directly to the Jeep parking area, or you can use a taxi/motorcycle taxi to reach Bungurasih Terminal. After that, you can look for buses heading to Banyuwangi or Jember. Note that you need to confirm with the conductor to get off at Probolinggo.
• How to Go To Bromo from Malang
Malang is the nearest city to access Bromo and is a favorite city for tourists to transit because besides being close, the access is also easy and varied. You can directly rent a Jeep from your hotel, take the Damri public transportation, or even for those of you who are brave enough, you can rent a trail motorbike to ride to Bromo, it’s exciting, isn’t it!
In addition, the choice of accommodation and supporting facilities such as culinary is also very complete, ranging from homestays, backpacker hotels, to starred hotels for you to stay in, plus various typical Malang culinary delights such as Malang meatball soup and Toko Oen which make Malang even more comfortable to visit.
The nearest route from Malang is the Tumpang route, on the road towards Ngadas Village, Poncokusumo District, you will find a simple banner statement that the road to Bromo from Malang is: Malang – Tumpang – Gubugklakah – Ngadas – Jemplang – Mount Bromo, which is approximately 53 km.
Although the slope is quite steep, the landscape along this route is known for its beautiful and stunning natural beauty. Gubugklakah is also a small apple village, and on the way back, you will be treated to views of the Ngadas apple orchards and several other interesting spots.
One of them is the Coban Pelangi waterfall, which is often visited by people. After that, you will find the Jemplang intersection that will determine the direction. If you take a straight direction, it will lead to the village of Ranu Pani (the starting point for climbing Mount Semeru), and if you turn right, the journey will take you back to Gubugklakah.
• How to Get to Bromo from Surabaya
If your plane or train arrives in Surabaya, you can continue your journey with a rental vehicle or public transportation, it takes 2.5 hours to drive to Bromo via the toll road. Without the toll road, it takes around 3.5 hours if the road conditions are smooth.
Bromo and Ijen Crater Tour from Surabaya, Itinerary dan Facilities
There are two Bromo Surabaya gates that you can pass through. First, through the entrance of Tosari Wonokitri Village in Pasuruan Regency. Second, through Ngadisari Village or the Sukapura route in Probolinggo Regency, to then continue the journey to Bromo by renting a Jeep managed by the local community.
If you take the bus, you must confirm with the conductor to get off in Probolinggo. From the Probolinggo Terminal, you have to quickly find transportation to Cemoro Lawang Village, which is the nearest village to Mount Bromo. However, this option is considered quite risky due to the uncertain bus schedules, a more reasonable option is to take a train that stops in Probolinggo or a Damri bus that goes directly to Wonokitri.
So, have you decided which route to take to Bromo? It is important to ensure the safety of the trip, whether using a private vehicle or rental vehicle.

The Historical Tapestry of Surabaya
A Journey Through Time: Unearthing Ancient Origins to Contemporary Grandeur
Surabaya, often hailed as the "City of Heroes," boasts a rich history that unfurls over centuries. Its strategic location as a bustling trading and cultural hub has molded it into the metropolis it is today. Let's embark on a voyage through time, from Surabaya's humble beginnings as a trading post to its metamorphosis into a thriving metropolis.
Surabaya's roots trace back to the 12th century when it was merely a quaint fishing village known as "Sawubaya." Nestled along the northern coast of Java, its proximity to the Java Sea catalyzed its transformation into a bustling trading port.
The colonial era ushered in Dutch rule, a period that significantly shaped Surabaya's architecture and urban layout. Dutch colonial influences echo through the city's historic landmarks, none more splendid than the majestic Hotel Majapahit, a testament to a bygone era's grandeur, built in 1910 by the Sarkies Brothers.
One pivotal event etched in Surabaya's history is the "Battle of Surabaya" in 1945, an epic chapter in Indonesia's fight for independence from Dutch colonial rule. The moniker "City of Heroes" pays homage to the courage and resilience displayed by Surabaya's inhabitants during this tumultuous period.
Today, Surabaya is a captivating amalgamation of colonial-era edifices, modern skyscrapers, and traditional Javanese architecture, a living testament to its rich and diverse history.
