If you are coming from the East (Bali, Ijen, and Jember), the Probolinggo route via Sukapura may be the best choice for you. There are plenty of spacious parking lots available for your vehicle as well.
If you are coming from Surabaya, you can take the Surabaya-Probolinggo toll road. After exiting the toll gate, enter the Sukapura area and then head to Ngadisari. Continue driving until you reach Cemoro Lawang. The village of Cemoro Lawang is the gateway to the Bromo area, and this route also allows you to visit the enchanting Madakaripura waterfall.
New Rules for Mount Bromo Tourism After the Pandemic
The Mount Bromo tourist area has been reopened by agreement between East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa and the governments of Probolinggo, Malang, Lumajang, Pasuruan districts, and Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.
Although it has been reopened, there are nine health practices that must be followed when visiting Mount Bromo during the New Normal period. The Mount Bromo management does not accept on-site ticket purchases to reduce physical contact and density in the tourist area.
All visitors who want to enter the Mount Bromo area must be in good physical condition. To ensure this, visitors must bring a health certificate and not have Upper Respiratory Tract Infection (URTI).
Before entering the Mount Bromo tourist area, the body temperature of each visitor will be measured. If the body temperature is above 37.30, a second temperature check will be performed every 5 minutes. If the temperature is still high, the visitor is not allowed to enter the Mount Bromo tourist area.
To maintain hand hygiene, all visitors are required to bring hand sanitizer or liquid soap.
At the Gunung Bromo tourist attraction, not all visitors are allowed to gather. You must always maintain a distance from others and follow the applicable rules.
Because the elderly and children are vulnerable groups to the spread of the Covid-19 virus, there are age restrictions for visitors. The minimum age for visiting Gunung Bromo is 14 years old and the maximum age is 60 years old.
To prevent the spread of the virus through droplets, all visitors to the Gunung Bromo area must wear masks and gloves.
To make the tourist area safer and more comfortable, visitors must bring their own food, drinks, and worship equipment. These items cannot be shared to avoid exchanging them.
If coughing or sneezing, visitors must observe proper etiquette by covering their nose and mouth with a tissue or inside of the elbow. Visitors are also strictly prohibited from spitting indiscriminately!
To prevent crowds and tourists, the management of Gunung Bromo tourism has limited the number of visitors with a quota. The quota applies to all tourist attractions in the Gunung Bromo area, such as Bukit Cinta which can only be visited by 28 people/day, Pananjakan with 178 people/day, Bukit Keduh with 86 people/day, Savana Teletapit with 347 people/day, and Mentigen with 100 people/day.
You are also urged not to approach the crater of Mount Bromo during the New Normal. The safe radius of the crater is 1 km.

Madakaripura Waterfall, The Hermitage of Gajah Mada, The Unifier of The Archipelago
Air Terjun Madakaripura is a waterfall located in Probolinggo, East Java, Indonesia. The waterfall is well-known for its beauty and is considered a sacred site in Javanese culture. It is believed to have been a place of meditation and retreat for Gajah Mada, a famous historical figure in Indonesia who played a key role in unifying the archipelago.
Before you start enjoying the beauty of Mount Bromo, it’s a good idea to visit the waterfall first, which is full of secrets and challenges to get there. But the challenge is worth it when you start to enter the area. The waterfall is surrounded by stunning cliffs and lush greenery, and the sound of the cascading water creates a peaceful and serene atmosphere. It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!
Air Terjun Madakaripura is a waterfall area with a very strong magical charm. This charm makes everyone curious and wants to visit this place. So, what is the condition in this area? Let’s discuss it below.
History, Mystery, and Myth of Air Terjun Madakaripura
The name Madakaripura comes from three words, namely Mada, which is taken from the name of an elephant. Kari has a sense of heritage. Meanwhile, pura means prayer or meditation. So, Madakaripura means an elephant that died while praying.
According to local residents, Patih Gajah Mada spent the rest of his life at this waterfall. He even stayed here until he passed away. He stayed here to reflect on what he had done. Mahapatih Gajahmada may have gone to this place when he was removed from his position as Mahapati.
The dismissal happened because Gajahmada killed hundreds of people in the Sunda Galuh kingdom. The story of Mahapatih Gajahmada is reinforced by the presence of Gajahmada statues in the area.
The statue of Patih Gajah Mada is located right in the parking area of this place. So, when you park your bike here, you will find a statue of Patih Gajah Mada.
Best deal! Bromo – Ijen Crater – Bali tour for $243
Madakaripura Gajah Mada
Madakaripura Gajah Mada is a waterfall that can be considered an eternal waterfall. Here, you can still find water without any dryness, where the static flow does not increase or decrease during the rainy or dry season.
When visiting here, it is important to be a little careful. If tourists have bad intentions, it is believed that it can bring disaster to them. On the other hand, if tourists have good intentions, they will receive blessings from the pure heart.
Another myth is that you must return before 2 pm. The locals also believe that if it is past 2 pm, rain will suddenly occur, causing the water surface to rise and endangering those still in the area.
Another myth from this area is about the waterfall’s ability to make people youthful. Whether this is true or not, it remains a myth.
The Tallest Waterfall in Java
In addition to being famous for its legendary myths and history, this waterfall is also the highest waterfall on the island of Java, with a height of around 200 meters. Madakaripura waterfall is also the second-highest waterfall in Indonesia, second only to the Ponot waterfall in North Sumatra, which is 250 meters high. Wow, this is really interesting!
Madakaripura Waterfall Tourist Attraction
Madakaripura Waterfall is located approximately 1000 meters above sea level. At this height, the surroundings around the waterfall are cool and lush. Everyone will be mesmerized by the unique ambiance, which is different from other waterfalls.
Interestingly, this waterfall is 200 meters high and has a cave-like shape that is approximately 25 meters wide. The waterfall is round in shape. Before reaching the main waterfall, tourists will be greeted by four other waterfalls, one of which is in the shape of a hollow.
The area around the waterfall offers beautiful green scenery, created by the abundance of water falling from above. It is indeed a perfect place for photography and photo sessions.
· Madakaripura Green Wall
According to local beliefs, the basin at the Madakaripura Waterfall is the place where Gajahmada reached moksha (salvation). Geographically, the waterfall is located at the end of a relatively deep valley, at the foot of the Tengger Mountains.
The waterfall descends as a centrifugal radial flow, spreading out from a single point. If you look closely, the waterfall expands, like a rain shower. It is very impressive, especially when the sun shines on the cluster of water droplets.
The beauty of this area is not only visible in the direct flow of water from above, but the water is also designed to create a flow with an impressive blue color. You will surely be amazed by the water.
In addition, the sound of the waterfall is believed to calm tourists. The sound creates waves that can have a dramatic effect on brain waves.
· Madakaripura Blue
This is the view that seems unreal, the attraction that only exists in Madakaripura Waterfall. I don’t know why, even though you are tired. When you leave this place, everything seems to disappear. It feels like all the burdens and fatigue disappear in an instant.
Location Address and Route
The location address of this area is Dusun Branggah, Desa Negororejo, Kecamatan Lumbang, Kabupaten Probolinggo. You can use private vehicles or public transportation to reach this area.
For those who want to use public transportation, you can start from Probolinggo terminal. From this terminal, take public transportation to Lumbung Village. Then, transfer to transportation from Lumbung to Bromo. Well, here you can get off at the entrance to the waterfall.
With private vehicles, tourists can use the Probolinggo – Bromo via Tongas route. From there, you will find the Sukapura intersection. Then turn right towards the warehouse. Once you reach Lumbung, direct your vehicle to Pasar Lumbang. Then turn right.
After arriving at this waterfall, you have to walk back to the location point. The journey takes about 20 minutes with super realistic obstacles. Note that this area is often closed during the rainy season. This is due to frequent flooding in the area.
No less exciting: Tumpak Sewu Waterfall
Madakaripura Road To
Passengers who want to use public transportation should be aware that the travel time is slightly longer than by private car.
Admission Ticket Prices
The entrance fee to this area is quite cheap, only 11,000 rupiahs. This includes a parking fee of Rp 5,000 for cars and Rp 3,000 for tourists traveling by motorized vehicles.
Here, there are several guides who are willing to accompany tourists. These guides also explain in detail the history of the Madakaripura waterfall. For this price, tourists can offer themselves.
It is recommended that you bring a raincoat. When you reach the waterfall, the area is like being showered with quite heavy rain. To protect yourself and your belongings, it is highly recommended to bring a raincoat.
