Two Worlds (Thurs IQIYI) ep 4 of 10 - I don’t say this often but I LOVE this love triangle. The longing gazes = chef's kiss. I like that we are finally getting flashbacks to Tai’s side of the love affaire. This show remains highly engaging. So pleased for MaxNat.  

Deep Night (Thurs iQiyi) ep 5 of 8 - More lesbians! Yay! Meanwhile, when our leads make up they make out! (Yes I’m proud of myself.) I think this might be BLs first rooftop sex scene. We’ve reached new heights, BLabies. (Yes I’m proud of that too.) Anygay, basically a soap opera at this point, I'm not thrilled but I don’t mind.

City of Stars (Fri iQIYI) ep 10 of 12 - It was lovely. Very well done celebrity leaving the closet ep. Nice ensemble work too. Next week is doom! As expected. 

Only Boo! (Sun YouTube) ep 1 of 12 - New main couple for GMMTV in an idol romance about a boy who dances good and a food stand vendor. It’s fine but overly very pulp feeling for something from GMMTV. I'm a little concerned.

1000 Years Old (Thurs iQIYI) ep 8 of 12 - meh.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Unknown (Taiwan Tues YouTube & Viki) ep 7 of 11 - Qian was, indeed, the one who couldn’t let go. This show is fucking fantastic. It's the best thing I'm watching right now by a mile.

Jazz for Two (Korea Gaga/grey) eps 3-8fin - The bully and the blue-haired drummer side pairing were great. I hated the father. Hated him so much. Our main tsundere seme was a bit too tsundere for me. I was v annoyed by the time he finally softened. I'm amused by all the ways they finagled boys kissin-but-not-kissing in the first half of this show. 2024's "pan around the back of the head" has now become a "dipping of the brolly." We did, however, eventually get an okay kiss.

Honestly?

This was basically what I wanted from Given and didn’t get. So I’m pleased. The music still wasn't great, but you can skip those bits. A solid enemies to lovers BL, where the sins of brothers' past haunts the present. Great optics, decent chemistry, and a tidy script even if tsundere characterization went a bit extreme in some cases. 8/10 RECOMMENDED trigger for suicide

Love is Better the Second Time Around AKA Koi wo Suru nara Nidome ga Joto (Japan Weds Gaga) ep 5 of 6 - We got the past betrayal in detail and it was decently bad. Bitterness understood. Too soon to live together! The BL U-Haul strikes again. I do like their weird curry passive aggressive argument. This is an interesting show. Do I LOVE it? No. But I think I like it.

On a not-really-related note: adoption, including adult adoption, is actually pretty common in Japan (comparatively). It's often tied to business scionism.

My Strawberry Film (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 8fin - It all turned out to be a tragic GL in the end. Not BL = not my problem. No rating. I will forget its existence right about… now. 

Love is like a Cat (Korea Mon Viki) eps 1-2 of 12 - Okay, weirdly kinky with the head scratching. Not much has happened and I’m not wild about what has.

We Are (Weds GMMTV iQIYI) ep 1 of 16 - University ensemble BL featuring PondPhuwin, WinnySatang, AouBoom, MarcPawinPoon - basically the good kind of messy gay friendship group (so more My Engineer and less Only Friends). Looks a bit like the Kiss series but everyone is queer. I'm IN but I need my other computer and I'm traveling as usual. So I'll get caught up next week and probably won't regularly be able to watch this one.

Graduation Countdown (Taiwan YouTube) - It's too much for me to keep up with 2 minute verticals, I don't have that kind of TikTok endurance training.

A Secretly Love (Thai Sat WeTV grey) 10 eps - Completed. Worth watching?

Lady Boy Friends (Thai WeTV grey) 16 eps - reminds me a bit too much of Diary of Tootsies only high school. Not my thing. DNF unless it turns a corner and is truly amazing.

Kiseki Chapter 2 (Sun iQIYI) 6 eps - It’s so boring DNFed at 2.

Close Friend Season 3: Soju Bomb! (Weds iQIYI) 6 - The problem with situational comedy BL is it must be situational, comedic and a BL. This show gets 1 of 3 claims correct. 33% is not a passing grade. Dropped at 3.

Then Next Prince turned out to be a trailer only. Word on the webs is we will be lucky if we get it this year. It’s BL Princess Diaries. Jimmy has a new pairing (that boy from Night Dream) which is... interesting. All in all, this show does not look good. Pretty but not good.

4/12 Living With Him AKA Kare no Iru Seikatsu (Japan Gaga) 10 eps - Kindly Ryota goes off to uni only to find his new roommate is his childhood bestie, Kazuhito. Kazuhito doesn’t have a girlfriend and Ryota tries to help him figure out why, they fall in love along the way. Same director as Old Fashion Cupcake.

4/18 At 25:00, in Alaska AKA 25 Ji, Akasaka de (Japan Gaga) 10 eps - Yuki lands his first starring role in a BL drama alongside superstar Asami (previously his senior at uni). Said superstar suggests they form a sham relationship until filming concludes. As they actually begin to fall in love, the spotlight begins to burn. I think I've seen this before (joke) and also the trailer doesn't inspire confidence.

4/26 My Stand-In (Thai iQIYI) 12 eps - adaptation of Chinese novel "Professional Body Double" by Shui Qiang Cheng. Stars Up (Lovely Writer) and Poom (Bake Me Please) directed by the same team as KP (not a recommendation IMHO - my biggest criticism of that show was the clashing directing styles). This one looks well complicated, lemme try: Joe is a stuntman for famous actor Tong. Joe falls in love with Ming but Ming sees Joe as nothing more than a Tong-replacement. After learning this horrible truth, Joe dies. Joe then wakes up in the body of another man also named Joe. He manages to rebuild the same life as before—with the same people eventually re-meeting Ming. Ming wants Joe back but Joe doesn't understand why. But Ming seems to know what's going on and wants to give him some kind of explanation.

I'm exhausted just trying to describe the plot.

They make a sensational team! Do I think they should have been canon? Well, I wouldn't have minded if they were, but I think Code Name Verity mostly works as it is. I enjoy their friendship in the book and romance in fic. Those who complain about fans making every friendship gay forget that some people wait a long time to find a femslash ship that appeals to them, and that was even more true when the book was published in 2012 then it is today.

One of my favorite details is when everyone is in the bomb shelter and Maddie thinks Julie will make fun of her for bringing the brolly but Julie does the opposite.

They came dangerously close to pushing each other off the edge of the mattress a couple of times. When the room finally stopped spinning, they were sitting up in the bed, fragrant skin glowing like amber in the golden light of the lamp. Vegeta’s back arched to meet Goku's frame. Their bodies were locked together as they claimed each other’s mouths, swaying gently every so often. Vegeta cupped his lover’s face, his touch sweet but tyrannical, claiming kiss after kiss with tongue and teeth. Goku’s arms sealed their sensuous embrace, enfolding Vegeta’s sides, strong hands cupping his rear, pulling his hips against his. Fingers curled around his pulsing length, sighing his relief. Their coupling had grown more languorous again but he could hardly resent it. Anything the younger man did was undeniably, absolutely inebriating. Goku’s passion flowed into him like a current, relentless, constant, ever growing. Vegeta was losing himself in his motion. Then, abruptly, Goku pulled out. “What the h-?!”, the older of the two began to protest, but he was cut short when his lover dragged him down on the mattress. The English language couldn't have begun to describe the way Goku felt when his name was on the other’s lips. No one pronounced it like Vegeta did. It cracked and roared like thunder when it rolled off his tongue, like winds of storm had ripped it from his chest. And Goku lived to make him speak it in the accent he preferred: cries of ecstasy.

"Ka-ahn ka-nh rooH th-" Goku's thrusts had evolved into a full-body motion. Each roll of his hips rocked their entwined frames like waves rocking a raft adrift at sea. His hand gripped behind Vegeta’s knee, plainly trying not to yank his leg back too hard in his attempt to shove as much of his sex as he could into his lover's hole. Vegeta didn't fail to notice the other's care, even as he plunged into him over and over again, with apparent unbridled savagery. It made it all the more endearing, the way Goku worked so greedily for his own pleasure. Vegeta, on his part, did the same. “Sweet talk won’t cut it”, Vegeta muttered through his teeth. "You better keep that dick in there until I finish, you- Whatever curses Vegeta had built up behind his teeth were cut short. Goku was gone from behind him. Before he knew it,  his lover was on top of him, settled between his legs, crouching on his haunches like a tiger ready to pounce. Vegeta found himself on his back, spread out and exposed. His eyes shot downward to what had sprung free from his body. “You-!”, he sputtered, in disbelief, gawking at his companion’s flushed yet miraculously still stiff and ready sex, throbbing lively between his legs. "You're still hard!" Goku held one of Vegeta’s legs close to his body, seeking the heat of his lover’s hole again. He thrusted in, ripping a groan out of Vegeta’s throat. Goku’s head was spinning, balls aching for release once again. He saw in golden hues. And he meant to spell it out in capital letters. Vegeta knew he would from the moment he felt the slightest squeeze in his grip. This time around, whatever desire had fueled him before, burned brighter. There was no need to start slow when they were both riled up beyond their comprehension. Vegeta had thrown his head back, unable to contain the moans and cries ripped from his outstretched throat. Goku was slamming into him hard and fast, his hold on his hips harsh enough to bruise, but the rough handling elicited no complaints. Vegeta’s prostate was receiving the much longed-for ruthless pummeling he’d been craving for weeks. The hand he had wrapped around his sex could hardly keep up. The other was raised above his head, gripping the edge of the bed, holding onto the mattress for dear life. And he threaded gloriously on that blurred edge like being careless and being carefree meant the same thing to him. Kakarot had taken his heart tightrope walking on livewire. “So much... I missed you so much… I missed you so much”, Goku was groaning over and over again. "Vegeta..." Vegeta’s arms were immediately around his shoulders, pulling him down until their noses brushed together, their breath mixing between their panting mouths. Passion let them loose, truth spilling out like water out of a crumbling dam. “Vegeta…” “Me too. I missed you too.” Their mouths crashed together with dangerous ardour. Vegeta kept his lover’s mouth on his, clinging to his lips by his teeth, hands curling into his thick, dark mop to hold him in place. His legs wrapped around his waist, squeezing his sides, ankles crossing behind the small of his back. An arduous feat, given how wildly Goku bucked into him. He groaned and hummed into his mouth. His lungs were aching. Their lips broke apart, the sounds of their pleasure spilling out once again. The younger man was almost curled over his lover. His weight bore down on Vegeta, coiled behind every single relentless thrust that shook his frame. He was edging towards the peak. Vegeta’s hands raked down the strong back. Goku had wrapped a hand around his sex, the feeling of that rough, warm, familiar palm was slowly dragging him towards his demise. Every muscle in his body was tensed and curled, ready to snap at any given moment. He was so close. After they’d crossed paths, it had been like they’d found gravity. They’d become obsessed, first with their fighting, then with each other. Though training to knock the other out on the floor of a tournament match hadn’t brought them anywhere near settling their score yet, they’d successfully found themselves backed into a corner. They’d been meeting in secret like that for months now. They hadn’t been keeping track, but it must have been almost a year since they’d started sleeping together. Each time they had, Vegeta was more and more aware that it wasn’t going to be the last. He’d often found himself wondering how much longer they could go on telling themselves what they were doing was a secret. What had sparked as an impulsive urge was developing into something that was more than just a convenient, occasional arrangement. It was more serious than that. Vegeta couldn’t lie to himself anymore. There was nothing he could do to erase the fact that he was falling head over heels in love with that man. After all, you can’t stop a runaway train. “We’re taking a train tomorrow”, he suddenly suggested, inspired. “For where?”, his lover inquired, sluggishly. “For anywhere.” Pensive silence followed his proposal. If Goku was surprised by his invite he didn’t let it show. He merely pushed himself up just enough to look at his lover in the eyes, all lidded eyes, kiss-swollen lips and messy hair. Vegeta felt like cursing. For a second he feared the other was going to ask him for his reasons. But of course, he had no need to do so, since he already knew them. “I had promised my mothers I’d be back to their place to do house sitting while they’re-“ “I couldn’t give a damn about that, Kakarot”, the other rebuked, imperiously, “Let’s go someplace. Just the two of us. A week, two weeks, a month, a year, forever, I don’t care. Let’s just leave tomorrow, before your nosy friends start swarming around you again. It’ll be my treat. I’m not asking for anything.” The younger man’s lips curled into a grin. If there was someone who could get away with complete and obnoxious disregard of etiquette and general politeness in Goku’s book, that had to be Vegeta. He pushed himself back up on his haunches. His limp length finally slipped out, leaving the older man wincing slightly at the sudden emptiness. Goku’s eyes admired the copious mess they’d made of each other, before drifting back up to Vegeta’s expectant face. “What are you planning to do with me if I say yes?”, he inquired, cunningly. “We’ll figure it out as we go”, came the dry rebuke. Vague. But the younger man would have needed much less to be swayed. Goku bent down, cupping the other’s face, visibly glowing when the other accepted his touch. He kissed him, hot and deep, wrapping his arms around him once again. “Alright”, he agreed in a murmur. Vegeta let himself be lifted in the other’s embrace and shifted around, so that the two of them could settle under the crumpled, dirtied sheets. “Not going to take another shower first?” “It doesn’t bother me”, Goku murmured in reply, nuzzling his neck, “I love how you smell after.” Vegeta wasn’t a fan of grime, but he made no move to do anything about it either. “Suit yourself. But I’m not sucking you off first thing tomorrow morning, when your morning wood wakes me up.” “I’m sure someone’ll take care of it.” They both knew neither of them was going to pass the chance the morning after, with or without showering. Vegeta stretched an arm out to flip the light switch but hesitated. “Kakarot.” “Mmh?” “Congratulations on your victory”, the older man finally conceded. Goku smiled against his skin. Vegeta turned the lights off and darkness fell in the room.

I've felt myself get a lot more cynical about "queer is a broad brolly which welcomes many people under it" and "it's good that people want to identify with us and be part of our experience" positions recently, and part of me is wondering whether it's age. Almost as that's become more true, it's made the differences more stark to me. It's good that people don't despise us now, right? I guess a lot of it feels like diluting words in ways that cease to have any meaning, and the insult of people attempting to opt out of straight privilege when I can never opt out of being queer.

And I know that sounds abstract in ways which aren't helpful. Stuff like, straight ladies going to gay bars and supporting drag queens, and that straight couple someone complained about visiting a gay sex shop. Dan Savage & the shop's owner were both like ??? It's good they feel comfortable there and that they're supporting queer-owned businesses. People with more money and social power spending this on the gays is pretty good in any practical sense.

and yet, and yet, and yet. You know, that Vice magazine article interviewing drag con attendees who could only find one gay man to talk to. Is it because there were so few of them there? Is it because they're not able to be photographed and identified online as a homosexual at a drag convention? Is it because the Vice journalist ultimately finds them less interesting? When straight women are all "I'd love to be a drag queen", I'm like, which parts of that? The sex work, parental rejection, having to hide your drag from your boyfriend, being harassed by strangers and homelessness, or...the eyeliner. Have you not noticed how many Drag Race contestants are profoundly messed up?

I guess I'm getting more angry about the things that have happened in my life; and the joy and openness younger LGBT people are expressing, and the (comparative) social acceptance by politicians, the media and so on, are actually just exacerbating the rage. Like, I'm glad no one is going through what I went through, but also *I should not have gone through it*.

And I feel alienated in lots of ways. I see young people talking about their lives and I'm like, girl when I was your age it was illegal to mention our existence in schools or public bodies, get married, or have sex (2013! Thanks Scotland!). But the flip side is, the sadness: despite all these changes, young people do still seem to be experiencing a tough time. You can't legislate against people's private, interpersonal hells.

idk, maybe it's great that all these people who are not sexually attracted to people of the same sex have decided they don't want to be categorised as straight now. But all the vague buzzwords around this, like, "well I'm not meaningfully sexually normative in a lot of ways" and "isn't sexuality and gender just on a spectrum for everyone?" and "ive had an experience which is similar to gay experiences, and therefore I ought to be part of your club"...It sticks in my craw. Straight is a great word with a great meaning, and I'd like to be able to meaningfully distinguish between people being impacted specifically by homophobia, and people who are not. Not because the sexual oppression straight people experience is less important or urgent, but because...words mean things.
