So I see a lot of posts on here about people thrilled to get their first genuine sale from outside their friends and family group, the first sale that represents your product and/or service speaking for itself, holding its own in the market, and making you that coveted stranger money. This is great, however, I would like to share my own experience as to why I specifically avoided friends and family during my startup phase.Straining relationshipsThat's right, you can easily strain a relationship with your friends, and your family. You hear about Aunty Karen that got into Herbalife and Tupperware and spent all her time trying to shill it to everyone she talked to. You don't want to be the friend that calls your mates and they see your number on the caller ID and think "For fucks sake, he's gonna sell me something"You find out soon that your mates are avoiding you, your family doesn't want to talk to you, you have too much enthusiasm for your business, and you affect the people around you, straining relationships. It brokeShit happens, we get it. But it is a common trap to fall into that:Family will not tell you it broke, so you can't warranty it because they don't want to hurt your feelingsYou fall into the trap of "I'll sort out these paying customers first, then I'll sort out Uncle Jim's problem later, I'm sure he'll understand"Uncle Jim is a paying customer like any other, don't let them "understand", treat them like anyone else. This is a trap I see so many business owners fall into time and time again.Family are guinea pigs, they don't like thatSure, the new widget you found is great. Is it safe? Is it useful? Is it practical? Some people turn their family into guinea pigs for new products, leaving family and friends with houses full of useless crap. They'll likely take it because you gave it to them, or gave them a good discount, but if it's impractical or just not useful, it ends up sitting in a drawer for fear of hurting your feelings by throwing it out.In the same vein, you get familial or friendly bias to the product, just imagine your mum sitting there "Well, this widget that Timmy got me is a hunk of shit, but I can't say that to him, he's put his heart and soul into getting this business going, I'll just tell him it's good so I don't hurt his feelings"Unfortunately, mum's best intentions mean that now you have a shitty product/service, and you're into it deeper than you could have been otherwise. The deal trap"I know the owner, he'll give me a good deal" or "I know the owner, I'll get you a good deal"Stop that. You're here to make money, if you're making money, good. If you're giving discounts to every friend of a friend of a friend, it will cheapen your product and your brand. Also, be careful if you do give a deal, we as business owners know how much the markup is, could be 30%, could be 300%, don't even let your family know. Why?What is stopping your dad from saying at work "Hey, you know those Widgets that James is selling? He gets them from China for $10 each and sells them for $100""Hey man, where did you get that widget?" someone asks, "I got it off my mate Frank, he only charge me $10, it's in store for $100"This sort of thing can go viral in the days of the internet, you don't know who is talking and who is listening. Imagine if one of the blokes your dad worked with recorded that conversation and found out you have a $90 markup on a $10 product. The whole market could perceive you as a ripoff merchant. People will pay what it's worth, if you allow it to be publicly known that your product costs 1/10 of what it retails for, people will be less willing to pay for it at the price you have set.I give family no more of a discount than I give others.Preferred SupportThis is another big trap, preferred support.Family will generally expect you to drop everything for them, I know I say above that Uncle Jim will understand, but maybe he won't?He's done you a favour by buying into your startup because he loves and trusts you, now the thing you convinced him was a good idea to buy is broken, and he knows the owner, he trusts you to come and fix his issue ASAP.This can take up a lot of your time, you're sitting there trying to run your empire and you're constantly being harassed by phone calls about this feature or that feature or it suddenly getting factory reset, you become an average poster on r/talesfromtechsupport simply by selling to your family. What I didKept my mouth shut.I had been running my business for 6 months before I got a message from a friend saying "Have you seen these? Being sold by [Company]? This is some cool shit! I've ordered heaps of stuff from them"Well yes, yes I have. I've seen your name pop up on those things. I'll confess, you've found my business. I'm the guy that runs [Business]. Here, have a sticker and a hat.Plus I'd eliminated all of the above issues, I don't give them preferential treatment, I don't give them discounts, I just don't.If they buy off me, they buy legitimately, off the merits of the item, I don't push, I don't shove, I just let it happen. In fact sometimes I'll tell my friends and family to go elsewhere because I know their situation and I know their needs and my product doesn't meet it. I'm not in it for a quick buck from friends and family, and you shouldn't be either.Same same for support, if they have an issue, as I point out to them, log it through our website into the system, only you as a customer can do that. This is a twofold effect, it gives me a good paper trail to take back to my suppliers if I have heaps of issues, and also, it doesn't appear to the supplier that I'm making a mountain out of a molehill because that person is family.
