NEVILLE BRODY -- Industria and Insignia

English graphic designer and typographer Neville Brody (b. 1957) is noted for his record cover designs and for his work for the culture magazine The Face, the men’s magazine Arena, and the London magazine City Limits. Brody’s typographic style uses aesthetic elements from Art Deco and non-European influences. His graphic language has become an international model for computer-oriented design. Among his earliest fonts are Industria and Insignia.

Industria was originally designed for The Face in 1984 and released as a font by Linotype in 1989. Industria is a condensed  san serif face with abbreviated, essential forms. It has a systematized mechanical structure of straight stroke with rounded outer corners and rectangular counter-spaces. It’s possible that you might recognize the font as it was used for the logo of The X-Files and is currently used for the logotype of the Oklahoma City Thunder basketball team.

Insignia was originally designed as a headline face for Arena magazine in 1986 and released as a font by Linotype in 1989. It has the basic forms of constructed Grotesque fonts and was influenced by the New Typography of the Bauhaus from the 1930s.

“Typography is a hidden tool of manipulation in society.”

Visual design is the business-minded sibling of visual art. In my research this term this has been reiterated for me many times, particularly when looking at the immense business successes of designers like Paula Scher and Neville Brody. Design, unlike art, must serve a purpose. Designers make use of visual tools to communicate ideas to the masses, often on behalf of businesses trying to sell products. In order to make these products seem appealing to the viewers, the designer must understand the whole range of tools available for them to use, including colours, images, shapes, layout, and of course typography.  

Text is a straightforward way to visually communicate a message, but typography selection is more complex than first meets the eye. Different type faces can communicate different ideas and moods, for instance the Jokerman font designed by Andrew K. Smith has a goofy energy and is generally used to invoke whimsy or excitement. On the other hand fonts like Helvetica or Times New Roman are more serious and refined, so they are more likely to be used for companies/brands seeking to establish their authority. It is also worth noting that in the current world of global markets, design favours simplicity, which often means sans-serif fonts and minimal text, so as to establish brand recognition quickly and communicate smoothly to the widest audience possible.

High impact sans-serif font, minimal text, eye catching and communicative regardless of text content

Different fonts can effect readability, with sans-serif fonts having an increased readability in comparison to serif fonts. For example, the polarising Comic Sans is considered to be the most legible font for people with ADHD, dyslexia, and other literacy issues. Still, despite its benefits, Comic Sans has its fair share of critics.

The well-versed designer is aware of these aspects of typography, and is able to work with and around them to communicate their ideas so effectively that the viewer is unaware of the typography itself speaking to them. To me, that is what Neville Brody meant by, “Typography is a hidden tool of manipulation in society.”  

As a young man, Brody was heavily involved in the emerging London punk scene, which influenced his decision to study design at the London College of Printing. In an Architectural Review interview from 1986, Brody shared “[I was] morally against the manipulativeness of advertising, so I went into design partly to understand how the form worked, and to use it against itself. I wanted to manipulate people too, but into querying, into questioning what they were being told…” The influence of punk carried on through his career, and he became best known for his work within the 1980’s alternative music scene, where he designed record covers and contributed to “The Face” magazine. He also designed several popular typefaces including FF Blur and Industria.

The anti-capitalist sentiments of Brody resonate with me and I feel that it echoes in his quote that I’ve chosen for the next project in this class. I will likely shorten the quote to “typography is a hidden tool of manipulation” to simplify it without losing the meaning.

The great artworks of the most iconic record sleeves are here - Pink Floyd, Peter Gabiel et al. But this is not a record sleeve book per se - it shows the imagery itself - the how and why it was done.

The name Hipgnosis was born out of a chance encounter with a door frame. Aubrey Powell and Storm Thorgerson, founders of the company, had been looking for a name for their fledgling studio. At the time they shared a flat in London’s South Kensington with Pink Floyd’s Syd Barrett and by chance Syd had scrawled in ball-point pen the word HIPGNOSIS on the door. When asked about it, Syd sheepishly denied he had written anything, but Syd was a clever wordsmith and only he could have made up such a brilliant acronym. He is to thank for linking ‘hip’ (pertaining to a cool subculture) with ‘gnostic’ (esoteric knowledge of spiritual matters ) and the noun ‘hypnosis’ (an artificially induced trance state resembling sleep characterised by heightened susceptibility to suggestion).

Research Post: Neville Brody

Neville Brody  is an English typographer, graphic designer and art director. Brody experiments with his self-made sans-serif typography with Pop Art and Dadaism influences. Brody has designed 23 font families, including: Arcadia, Industria, FF Blur, FF Gothic, FF Tokyo and FF Tyson. Many of his fonts were created in 1991, the same year as the album loveless released.

I also really like the flow of Brody's design work. I find the use of positive and negative space interesting.

Brody has also designed many album covers. I like the bold colours he uses in these covers.

recently my dad has been showing some interest in the posters and such I've been working on here, and he's been encouraging it a lot. he's a graphic designer by day, and writes as a hobby, so I'm always very excited whenever I get to engage with him on like, an artist to artist basis with either of those things, especially because I was never really able to do that growing up.

recently I was talking with him about a project I was working on, and he got really excited and pulled out an art book he really liked that he thought would be a good place to mine ideas from. it's the graphic language of neville brody, and the guy in question was mainly known for logo design, typography, and magazine covers/spreads in the 80s. lot of very cool stuff in there I'm definitely gonna be borrowing. he uses a lot of odd high contrast textures and large blocky shapes or letters to create very... well, idk the language for it exactly, but they're very modern and well balanced compositions. extremely aspirational.

anyway it also got me thinking about how one of dad's first real art jobs back in the early 80s involved a lot of digital typographical work, so I wonder if this sort of thing was what he was looking to for inspiration at the time, as he built up a sense of what styles and vibes he identified with himself. feels very special to get a recommendation like that.
