SNOOP » is the new series of sneakers gardened by Monsieur Plant. Composed of leaves and flowers of hemp, these artworks highlight a precious plant.
Since its discovery, hemp has conquered the world thanks to its unlimited uses. All cultures are confused, he is fascinated by its effects used in medicine by its solidity once transformed into rope. The plant is not extinct over the centuries, it has a sacred or dizzying image, a playful character or reputation to drive crazy. In these artworks, Monsieur Plant plays with the opposition and uses the symbols to give them a natural and ethical look, as well as to say that nature always triumphs over the human and his modes of consumption.

What battery percentage is your phone on right now? 1% and it’s been 1% for a while OMG running to charge it now
Do any medical afflictions run in your family? I have a relative who died of cancer but that has been the only case. As far as I know of, no. My family has a horrible practice of keeping these things a secret for us though; their reasoning is that if they say the name of the disease it’ll jinx it for them and one of us would get it. So who knows if we have a history of high blood? Arthritis? Cancer? I certainly don’t.
Who did you last talk to in person and what did you say? I think I was talking to my sister about a political issue that my high school has been in, but it’s super specific no one here would understand so I’d rather just not delve at all.
Have you ever been to a professional sports game? No. I have been, however, to a professional wrestling event. We don’t really count that as a game.
How far do you live from New York City? 16 hours by flight, I think. It’s either 16 or 20.
How often do you talk to your parents? I guess I just talk to my mom when she gets home at like 9 in the evening. I don’t make an effort to talk to her any other time. I talk to my dad whenever he’s home; he’s way easier to talk to.
Do you prefer pads, tampons or something else? Pads. I’m scared of tampons haha and it’s not a norm here in the Philippines, tampons have never been the go-to for a lot of girls.
What was the weather like in your town today? Well now it’s being cloudy, but we’re in the middle of summer and I know the sun is just gonna stupidly be up for the rest of the day. I don’t want to get my hopes up for slightly cloudy weather.
Are there any phrases or words that you say a lot? Yas queen, oh my god, like, for real, seriously, duuuude, bitch, fucking.
How many boyfriends or girlfriends have you ever had? One girlfriend.
Have you ever ordered a specially made cake from a cake shop? I don’t think so. At least I’ve never ordered myself. I’ve eaten lots of customized cakes though.
Do you clean your ears daily? Weekly.
What accent do you have? Filipino.
Have you ever dated a model? No but Gabie is so pretty and photogenic I always tell her she could be a model heh.
What’s the best job you’ve ever had? I’ve never had a job.
How about the worst?
Do you have naturally straight hair? It’s really more of wavy than straight.
What is your ultimate goal in life? Be the mother that my own never was to me.
Have you ever visited someone in prison? Nope.
What months were you and your siblings born in? My brother and I were born in April, my sister in September.
What are your three favourite vegetables? Broccoli, bell peppers, asparagus.
How many times a day do you check Facebook or any other social network? Unfortunately I have to check Facebook everyday since all the work groups are there. Twitter is daily. Tumblr is probably 3-4 times a week on average.
What colour are the socks you’re wearing today? I’m not wearing any.
What did you have for dinner last night? I didn’t. I had late lunch–at 3:30 PM–yesterday and I didn’t feel hungry enough for dinner anymore. I did have the doughnuts that Angela gave me, but that doesn’t count as dinner.
Are you an ugly crier? Aren’t we all. What scent is the soap or body wash you use in the shower? Just smells like soap to me.
Have you ever had sex in/on a vehicle? Yup.
Who do you live with? My family.
What letter does your street name begin with? H.
Do you do anything to groom your eyebrows? I shave it on occasion. My pain tolerance is ridiculously low and I don’t like any method other than shaving. Plucking is scary. Threading is even more horrifying.
What’s your favourite Popsicle flavour? Cookies and cream. Who was the last person you sent a Facebook message to and what did you say? It was the president of my org and I was basically just saying thank you since she answered the question that I had sent.
Do you have any injuries at the moment? Yeah for some reason I have a big, ugly, black bruise on my knee. Have no idea where it came from and it doesn’t hurt either. Just showed up one day. I have blisters all over my feet since I used uncomfortable shoes last week, and I self-harmed a bit so my wrists have stuff on them too.
Have you ever been to an ophthalmologist? Nope. I only ever needed to get glasses done; it’s never been more serious.
Are you tall, short or average? Would you change this? I mean I’m average in my culture, but short for the rest of the world. 5′1″ is not remarkable at all. No, I’m fine like this. I like being shorter than my girlfriend anyway hahaha.
Have you ever taken an acting class? Hell no. It’s too extroverted a concept for me.
What is your favourite kind of berry? Hate fruits. How do you usually style your hair? I just let it down most days. Ponytail or half-ponytail on the days that I feel like it’s too thick to handle.
Do you have any tattoos? Tell me about them. I don’t. I have always wanted tattoos–in fact, in my older surveys I always said I’ll be covered up in the future. Well the future is here and things have changed, and I have had to face the truth that I’m simply never getting over my fear of needles. I saw my mom getting hers–she has the highest pain tolerance of anyone I know–and she was clutching the pillow like it was her life and she was all tensed up and her fists were clenched and her eyes squeezed shut the hardest they could ever get. That was what lost me. As long as the traditional way of applying tattoo is around, I think I’ll be too afraid to get my own.
Have you ever worked in a store while someone shoplifted there? I’ve never worked anywhere.
Is there anything you absolutely refuse to eat? Fruits.
How many hours per week do you typically work?
What was the last pill or tablet you took? None. I don’t take any, although I probably need them.
Have you ever lived in university/college campus housing? No. I can drive to and from school.
Who was the last person you complimented? It was Gab. I found it impressive that she memorizes her entire reviewer for her midterm, so I made sure to give her a boost since she’s very nervous for that exam.
Are you the type of person to take naps, even if you’ve slept plenty? LMAO YESSSSS I take one nap after another whenever I can.
Do you have a crush on anyone at the moment? Gabie.
When was the last time you saw your best friend? I saw Gab two days ago and Angela yesterday.
Do you get along with all your aunts and uncles? Sure.
Have you ever had casual sex? Nope.
What was your first pet’s name and how did you pick that? Because it was a goldfish and we couldn’t think of anything wittier other than Goldy. We were 6. Who did you last make plans with, and what plans did you make? My orgmates and I have plans to drink out tomorrow. That’s a bunch of people–myself, Luisa, Frances, JM, Jo, Aya, and Gabie plans to come along as well.
When was the last time you bought a pair of shoes? We got a pair of Nike Cortezes a month or two ago.
What’s your favourite flavour of frosting? Chocolate.

What’s The Story Here?
“Hi! My name is Fred, and I’m an addict.”
I moved to America in 2009, where, when you say those words, you immediately picture an awkward room filled with people quivering in silence to the sound of anxiety. One may even smell over-brewed coffee. No, I am not addicted to drugs, and this is not going to be the story of how I overcame an addiction by running. This is the story of me. A French-born runner in New York City.
In 1994, my PE teacher gave me detention for hiding in the bushes with some girl friends while we were doing endurance laps in the Jardins du Luxembourg (the Senate’s garden where we would have PE classes in the spring). I think I was smoking cigarettes there as well... I was to report at 8am on a Saturday. This seems like an unimportant event, but I truly believe the confidence boost that was to come shaped part of my personality.
I unexpectedly arrived on time, in my joggers, my rebel attitude blazing out of my ground-striking eyes, only to have it thwarted by the absence of any other student.
‘We are going to jog for half an hour, and you are not allowed to stop.’
What a preposterous idea... ‘C’est impossible !’, I said in my teenage pouting voice. But there was no way out, it was happening.
So I went, before him, slowly. I tried to brake-check him, I said I couldn’t breathe... But I think my sweaty red face wasn’t sad and convincing enough, because he would just push back and tell me:
‘stop whining, you can do it, don’t stop!’
He proceeded to start a conversation, I can’t remember what it was about... But I like to talk, so I went with it, and with every sentence, the concept of time started to wither away. I have no idea how fast we were going, but in the end, we did run for 30 minutes, and I did not die.
FAT This happened during what I call, my ‘fat’ year. For a while, I had been drinking Coke by the bottle, stacking candies near my bed, eating ice cream and cookies by the box, ... My older brother even referred to me as “bouffe-tout” (”eat-everything”, which happened to be Slimer’s French name in Ghostbusters.) All I wanted was to eat, burp, and mostly to avoid any effort at all cost. One of my brother’s friend reminded me recently that I had ‘invented’ some type of rope-elevator apparatus just so I didn’t have to walk down the two flights of stairs that separated the TV from the refrigerator... I am unsure of what would have happened of me if I hadn’t hidden and smoked behind the bushes during PE in 1994.
BE COOL In High-School, I spent every day skateboarding with my friends. I would skateboard to school, skateboard in school, skip school to meet my friends to, skateboard... That’s all I did around, and sometimes within, my class schedule. I was very active. Those years can be summed up in 5 words: Skateboard, metal,_ sweat_, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, 411 Video Magazine... Yet, running wasn’t something I enjoyed. I assimilated it with PE, and PE wasn’t fun.
I stopped skateboarding when I graduated from High-School and joined a band. This was going to be my life. The energy I put into skateboarding was to go into my hardcore band life. I’d eat whatever, drink whatever, party, scream and play loud music. Somehow, I managed to stay fit during several years with my only workout being screaming into a microphone while jumping everywhere like a clown for about 6 hours a week... How sweet is life...
‘What sport do you play?’
Sports? I didn’t play any. What a strange concept that everyone should be into some type of sports... Of course, as any kid in France during the 90s I had practiced Soccer, some Track and Field, Tennis, etc. But I was out of school, why would I put myself through this willingly?
WHATEVER HAPPENED From one band to another, the music got quieter, until I ended up singing in a signed pop/punk band. The rehearsals and the jumping around were more sparse, I mostly stood behind my mic on a stand going left and right, but the rest of the lifestyle was still there, harder than ever. I remember a band retreat, where we tried to push ourselves to wake up every morning and jog in the woods and do some crunches. Fail. It lasted about a week and stopped as soon as we were back in Paris. Life started to catch up on me, and I was losing touch with my body.
I woke up one morning, my band wasn’t doing as great as I wanted, pictures started showing rolls out of my skinny jeans, I had no vision for my future, I hated myself. Life seemed to be an impossible concept. Impossible... ‘Nothing is impossible. Fuck that’. Like my PE teacher, the voice in my head would not let me quit. ‘Get a grip you stupid goat!’
DIRECTION I needed goats goals. Like those 30 minutes of jogging I was forced to complete, I needed to picture a success, and never quit until I was there. ‘Get fit!’ I bought a cheap pair of store-brand ‘running’ shoes, and started running. I started going to the Olympic pool in my neighborhood to swim laps. I registered for college to resume my studies (in France it’s free, how sweet is la vie?). Here was a clear goal right in front of me, there was an exchange program after 2 years, and I would be one of the few that would spend a year studying in the United States. Failure was not an option. I would talk about it like it was set in stone, ‘when I’ll be in the US...’ Whatever people said, this was happening.
I don’t think I can describe how it felt two years later, on that plane to San Jose, CA, looking out the window, with a year of fending for myself ahead of me. I wasn’t scared. I felt a mix of incredulity and excitement. Like a long race during which you did not even acknowledge any thought about quitting, yet when you pass the finish line, you wonder how the hell you did it...
WHERE AM I GOING? When in college in France, I had registered for any sports or team that would fit into my schedule. Track team, check. Team Handball, check. Baseball, check. If I didn’t have practice on a day, I would just go to the gym or to the pool. But in France, apart from the Rugby team, all you had to do was to show up, and you were part of the team... Years of American Teen movies had scared me from even considering the dreaded “tryouts”, so I didn’t join a team. I just ran, went to the gym, and I bought a skateboard and a bike to get around (as a typical Parisian, I did not have a driving license...) I was staying in shape.
After two years of having planned my life like I had OCD, I let it take a direction of its own, and a year later, I ended up in New York instead of going back to France. There, I adhered to the ‘basic’ New-Yorker’s lifestyle: join a gym, work, workout, drink, eat-out, bis repetita. It wasn’t the best of time, it wasn’t the worst of time, but I did not have a goal, an ‘addiction’. ‘Just find something.’ Music it is. I started The Johnny Pumps, in 2012, and focused on writing songs again. When I wasn’t working or writing songs with a glass of whiskey, I was going to the gym, not really trying, avoiding cardio.
FAT 3.0 Was it age, diet, or lifestyle? I started putting on more pounds that I wanted to. When I reached 220bs, I felt disgusting. The problem when you are 6′4″, is that even when you are overweight, it doesn’t show that much unless you take your shirt off, therefore people tell you “you’re crazy... You’re not fat at all...” Some people, like me, need to hear that we are fat, and we need to get a grip.
I don’t think I’m blowing anyone’s mind by saying that the fastest way to shed fat is to stop eating carbs. Unless Dr. OZ is your go-to reference in dieting, setting aside all other rhetoric, we should all know in 2017 that grains and sugar raise the level of glucose in your blood which triggers your pancreas into releasing insulin which tells the body to stop burning its fat stores and instead, absorb some of the fatty acids and glucose in the blood and turn them into more body fat. Whether we agree or not that this is a healthy, or easy way to lose fat, or that you run faster or slower with carbs, nobody can say it doesn’t work if you commit to it. ‘Commit’. Well, turns out I am good at that. Ketogenic diet, here I come.
RUN, YOU FOOL Coconut oil, avocados, chicken, fish, broccoli and cauliflower. You name it, I’ve eaten more than anyone would like to. But in less than a year I was as skinny as 175lbs (way too skinny...) to finally set up to 185lbs (my ‘perfect’ weight).
In 2015, one of my best friends texted me:
“Hey! Wanna run a relay with me and some friends in a month and a half in Utah?”
“Sure!”
I had committed to run 2 legs of a marathon relay with my friend’s girlfriend. I was going to basically run a half marathon, with no training. I cringe today when I say out loud that I trained for it mostly on a treadmill, at the gym, and that I ran it with road Nikes I bought on sale. I believe my longest ‘train’ run was 8 miles out of the three ‘real’ runs I did in Central Park.
DID I JUST JOIN A CULT? This was the third November Project Summit, and I had no idea what the November Project was. From my experience at the race, they were just some weird beer-drinking frat guys who happened to be really loud and cheerful. I can say today that I really didn’t get it...
I can honestly not remember my time, all I know is that my first leg was under 1h, and the second was hell, and over 1h. I had never focused on my result/time, PR was an unknown concept to me, pace was just a word I would hear without knowing what it meant, if I went out to run, my goal would be x minutes of running or x many loops. I would go, reach the goal, then not think about it again.
Back in New York, I went on a few runs, mostly worked out at the gym. I didn’t really have a ‘good‘ reason to run. In the back of my mind I thought, maybe I can do this again next year, it was fun.
February 2nd, 2016
Text from, to use his real name, Gabe**: **
“Want to go to the November Project workout tomorrow morning at 6:28am?”
“What the hell is November Project, and why TF is it at 6:28am?”
“You know, those guys who were partying when we ran the race in Utah, they have workouts every Wednesday morning and its right by your place.”
“Sure.”
I’m not addicted, but I may have joined a cult.

Do you know what punk truly is? >> I think my understanding of punk is about as competent as it can get. Did you know that studded belts and listening to The Misfits isn’t punk? >> I don’t think it’s very punk to go around telling people that indulging in perfectly innocuous punk-associated things isn’t “punk enough”. Where do you buy your clothes? >> Hot Topic, various thrift stores, Forever 21, wherever I can get something fun to wear without paying an arm and a leg. How often do you go to the local mall? >> Eh, once every couple of months or so. I’d go more often but it’s such a money trap.
Do most of your pants consist of jeans? >> No, I only have one pair of jeans that I actually wear regularly.
Do you like wearing shorts? >> I like wearing the kinds I like to wear... which are increasingly difficult to find. If you’re a girl, what’s your bra size? >> --- What kind of shoes do you usually wear? >> Sneakers or boots. Do you wear socks that go up your legs? >> I recently got a pair because they had spiders on them and I thought they were adorable, but I usually don’t wear socks like that. How many pairs of shoes do you own? >> Two, not counting weather boots. Do you wear skater shoes? >> No, because they’re uncomfortable when you have a pronounced arch in your sole. How about flip flops? >> Only as shower shoes. Do you call flip flops thongs? >> Nah. Do you call capris Clam-Diggers?: >> Nope.
Own any golfing shoes?: >> No. Do you prefer Nike or Adidas?: >> I don’t care for either. Would you say you’re a sporty person? >> Nope. What sports do you watch on TV? >> Figure skating is the only sport I consistently like to watch. Do you despise sports?: >> No, I’m just extremely disinterested most of the time. What’s your favorite sport? Least favorite? >> Golf is my least favourite, hands down. My favourite is figure skating. How often do you wear deodorant?: >> Daily, usually. In winter I often skip days. Do you prefer Gatorade or Powerade?: >> I don’t really have a preference. Do you drink bottled water?: >> Occasionally. How often do you drink water?: >> Daily? Don’t know how to measure it any more intricately than that. Do you drink normal tea or iced tea?: >> Normal, usually.
Will you go to your senior prom? >> I did. What classes are you taking? >> --- Do you skip classes a lot to go get high with some close homies? >> --- Ever been busted for it? If so, what was the punishment? >> --- Are you one of those honor roll students? >> --- How many classes have you failed so far? >> --- Do you like your handwriting? >> I liked it better when I was still used to writing longhand. Now it doesn’t come as easy. Got a lot of deep, depressing poetry and artwork stashed? >> No, not stashed anywhere. Most of it is still up on deviantART. Ever attempted suicide or self-mutilated yourself?: >> Yes to both. Been in a car accident?: >> Nope. Broken a bone?: >> Nope. Had to get surgery? If so, on what/what for? >> Nope. Ever stayed overnight in a hospital?: >> Yeah. Do you have allergies? >> No. Last movie you saw in theaters? >> The Equalizer 2.
If you’re pale, do you get made fun of for it? >> I’m not pale. Are you white/black/asian/mexican/etc? >> Black. How old are your parents? >> 84 and who knows. Did your family move to America from another country? >> My mother is here from Haiti.
Have you ever been to any other countries? >> Nope. If so, where and for how long? >> --- Ever been to Washington D.C.?: >> Nope. Did you get to meet the president of the time? >> --- Anyway, ever been to NYC Or LA?: >> I used to live in NYC. If so, how were your experiences there?: >> I don’t really know how to sum up almost 10 years of residency in a city, lmao. Ever known anyone who did business with a prostitute?: >> Yep. Are your real parents divorced?: >> They were never married. Were you adopted?: >> No. If so, have you met your biological parents? How about biological siblings or grandparents?: >> --- If your parents are divorced, how old are your step parents? >> --- Do you like your step parents, or are they assholes? >> --- Ever had an abusive parent or other family member? >> I have multiple abusive family members. If so, what’s the worst they did?: >> I don’t know how to rank that sort of thing. It was all pretty awful, you know, because that’s how abuse is. Got any step siblings? If so, how many? Are they annoying or cool? >> No. Are either of your parents engaged but not married yet? >> --- Do you think it’s silly for grown adults to still be dating around? >> I don’t see why that would be silly. Ever walked in on your parents while they were getting busy? If so, how many times and how old were you?: >> Nope. How many siblings do you have?: >> Five. How old are they, and what are their names? >> Meh. Do they have the same hair color and eye color as you? >> None of them look like me because they’re all half-siblings. Do you like older or younger siblings better? >> I don’t know anything about actual sibling relationships. These aren’t people I actually know. Ever had to take care of a baby sibling? If do, did you feel responsible, or were you just annoyed?: >> No. Do you like children, or do they piss you off? >> I love kids. Think you’ll ever have kids of your own one day? >> Adoption is always on the table as an option. Have you ever had a close friend get knocked up early? >> No. Have you yourself ever gotten close to getting pregnant? >> Yes. If you were to get pregnant as a teen, what would happen? >> --- Do you know if anyone in your family ever got knocked up as a teen?: >> Probably.
Anything planned for this Sunday? >> No. Do you use a toaster or toaster oven? >> We have a toaster.
Do you have a job? >> No. Do you like to mow the yard? >> --- Were you happy when you woke up today? >> I felt a little more myself, but I’m still not at 100% quite yet. I’m gonna go ahead and blame the weather on top of everything else, lmao. Who is the last person you got really pissed off with? >> A person I shouldn’t even waste that level of emotion on at this point, considering. But Rez’s saga quote was spot-on, and I guess I can’t really be too hard on myself, all told. What time do you have to be in work? >> I don’t. What color is your father’s car? >> Maroon, provided he still has it. Where’s the last place you wore a hoodie to? >> It’s been a long time since I’ve gotten to wear a hoodie, lmao. Are your nails painted any special color? >> Nope. Give us your plans for the next three hours? >> I’m probably going to go back to PoE: Deadfire for a couple more hours at least, and then maybe check out my dashboard for a while, or something. Can you live a day without tv? >> Sure. Do you prefer broccoli or asparagus? >> I really like both, actually.

People vs Place
Im in the process of reading two books, almost simultaneously. The one counters the other you see and I would veer into one side of my personality too much if I didn’t balance the books out. Become too much about “people” or too much about the wilds, the “place”. The first book is Homo Deus by Yuval Harari, a book about human civilisation, about us as this collective machine churning forward under the bleating mantra of “progress”. It talks less about the great achievements we have made, and more about the path of destruction each civilisation has left in its wake, from the Sumerians, to the Mayans, and the Easter Island folk. Of course the Easter Island folk. He is gearing us up to ask where will be tomorrow, as a civilisation. What is our end game? We roll relentlessly ‘forward’, all the time watching the ball rather than the game. And could that ever have been more true than right now, with our civilisation on the brink of… something. It could be one of many things: civil war as politics polarises our every opinion; nuclear war as two fat man-children wave their warhead-willies at each other; or an almighty natural disaster, as floods and winds, seas and sun batter our wildly short-sighted urban habitats. I dunno, it just feels like something is going to happen. Safe to say, the book whilst a must read, is really fucking depressing. And the weight of it is bearing on me. I said to Kristian last night that I used to only read novels and books less about people but more about place, or at most books by people who just walked around places (see Fiona Campbell in Africa for another good read, she used to bonk Ray Mears and he appears in a bush in the book!). But now I read politics day and night. I no longer subscribe to BBC Wildlife or National Geographic, but to the Washington Post and The Economist. I no longer live on the edge of a forest or the sea or a moor, but in a city. Granted, I found a tiny oasis of park and lake and live on the edge of that instead. But on one side where I have ducks, grebes, herons, owls, foxes and every native deciduous tree that can grow here, on the other I have a busy road churning with city traffic, airplanes overhead, sirens in the distance, litter instead of leaves. My flat could not be more of a metaphor for my life if I had planned it! Torn between my ambitions that keep me in cities and my desire to roam and live a wilder life. To make the metaphor more reflective, the “city side” has a hospital - hidden by trees – that houses a mental ward. On nice days people come outside and in between the rush of cars you hear the screaming and manic shrieking of the unwell…
So the other book is probably the main reason I am so tetchy right now. Its hit a nerve that has made me realise all of the above. Its called the Outrun by Amy Liptrot, an Orcadian who like others, left the Islands and moved South to London of all places. In London she found she constantly searched for the horizon and never found it, looking for ‘the edge’ of things all the time. I get that – Its been a decade since I left Cornwall and I still find myself doing it. Whilst South she developed a problem with drink and after a years of abuse has returned to the Orkneys to get better. She has moved out to Papay where she is holed up in an RSPB property (she was a “corncrake wife”) called Rose Cottage, and is documenting her recovery and inner revelations whilst talking us through everything about the island life: The seals, the skies, the ‘merry dancers’. All the while she is tuning into the tide and moon cycles, the stars, the weather. And I realised how detached I am from them here. We don’t get much weather in Birmingham, which is weird for me. I grew up on the Cornish coast, I’ve never lived somewhere so stable. If civilisation pacifies you into insignificance through the weight of our population size and the rituals of consumerism, then cities are the final nail in the lid, pacifying you from your very nature. Detaching you from the cycles of the world. Infrastructure making tides and weather and seasons irrelevant. Kristian and I grow stuff, keeping a tenuous thread of attachment to the cycles going. I’m about to clear out the aphid infested purple sprouting broccoli and plant the Autumn stocks for next Spring: Garlic and some Spring onions I think. We’ve had our first crop of apples on the trees I bought Krisitan for his birthday last year, and we recently slept overnight in the forest at Cannock Chase so we could fill as many tubs as the daylight would allow with blackberries. Little threads.
I wonder if I am homesick, but I don’t really have a home so don’t really know if that is it. Cornwall is kind of home, but I cant really go back for any length whilst my dad still exists there. Scandinavia is a close second, but the language barrier jars on me. Makes the place too much about the people all over again. I think about Scotland as an in-between, but don’t know what I would do for work up there. I do like the choice of communities in Birmingham though. I like cycling through the park and seeing the Asian guy doing tai-chi every morning in the bandstand, the catholic nuns basking in the sun on the benches, the burka clad women running in circuits with their white Nikes flashing out from under their black skirts. The three Sikh guys that stroll out together in deep conversation, turbans bowed into one another as they walk. The military fitness club, the yummy-mummies, the hooded lads draped over bikes and benches as they huddle over a smart phone. And then I remember how pointless it all is. How we are just little specks in a machine of civilisation. I don’t know them, they don’t know me. And if one of us ‘went’ tomorrow, it wouldn’t really matter. Nothing would change. I don’t really believe that the “butterfly flaps its wings” metaphor is applicable to humans. We are too many.
And that’s kind of where I have got myself too. I wonder if that’s the reason most people feel the need to be away somewhere remote: so that you are surrounded by fewer people in order to be more significant. On Signy, in Antarctica, our footsteps in the moss would last years. Here, on the tarmac, I leave none.
I wonder where my place is. So yeah. That old chestnut!
