Carol Channing passed away this morning and I am at a loss for words. From the 1985 Alice in Wonderland film, to my discovery of “Thoroughly Modern Millie”, to the 1995 revival of HELLO, DOLLY! (which I practically wore out that CD) - and the countless videos and recordings I watched of her in the original and other productions, Miss Channing was an icon in this little gay boy’s life and one of the reasons why I loved theatre so much. I may overuse this phrase, but she is the epitome of a National Treasure. Da mir mit Equus der junge Peter Firth nun endlich auch einmal als durchaus anschmachtenswert aufgefallen ist (in Tess kommt es nicht so rüber) machte ich mich motivierter als zuvor an die schon eine ganze Weile für weitere vergleichende Studien zu The Picture of Dorian Gray herumfahrende 1976er BBC-Fernsehvariante. Peter ist hinreißender, blasierter, grausamer und homoerotisch aufgeladener als die bisherigen Dorians (was mit Helmut Berger als Mitbewerber schon eine beachtliche Leistung darstellt), der dafür naturgemäß empfängliche John Gielgud ist –George Sanders hin oder her– der perfekte Lord Henry, und Jeremy Brett (der bei uns sonst ja eigentlich fast immer nur als dieser besinnungslos verliebte junge Schwachkopf, der sich in der Wimpole Street herumtreibt, trällernd, daß er weiß, in der Straße wohnst du) schafft es, daß diesmal sogar der Portraitmaler Basil interessant und abgründig wird. Alles herrlich geschauspielert, und zudem ziemlich werkgetreu. Nur, weil es eben wie eine Siebzigerjahre-Fernsehproduktion, und nicht wie ein fabelhaft glamouröser Vierzigerjahre-Hollywoodschinken aussieht (und daß die Darstellerin der Sibyl Vane es nicht zur unverwüstlichen Broadwaylegende geschafft hat), wird es wohl trotzdem nicht zu unserer Lieblingsversion werden.
