Is he being a gentleman by letting her take the stairs? Or (maybe I’m reading too much into this but with a show like Broadchurch you never know) with the way he is especially in season 1, it might just be that this is another detail of him not allowing himself some comfort, literally the easier way in that sense.

I mean think about it... He says that coming to Broadchurch (and the Latimer case) is his penance. He has a house directly by the water even though he’s scared of water and has nightmares of drowning. Broadchurch even carries (probably not very good) memories of his childhood. And Broadchurch is a show where even small things can have some deeper meaning.
