names of people you have had crushes on: Gabie, Andi from 5th grade...and that’s it, really.

I’ve met them only once before, and I wish we can be allowed to report to the workplace physically soon so that I get to see them more often and strengthen my relationship (both working and personal) with them. I’d also love to be able to chat and chill with Hayley Williams even for just 30 seconds.
people you want to meet in Heaven: I don’t believe in that, but I’d love to have met my great-grandfather on my maternal grandfather’s side. Also, Audrey Hepburn and Princess Diana.
good names for a dog or cat: Depends on their personality.

Beth: @bionic-beth is a teacher! :) But I don’t know any Beths in real life, I think.

of the cutest babies you've seen on social media: My workmate’s baby. My friend Jar has a super squishy niece/nephew pair of twins as well.
people you miss: Angela, Kate, my grandpa.
people with beautiful eyes: I can only think of my ex.
people with nice hair: God I have not been around people for so long, I can barely think of anyone for this.
people who are the same height as you: Aya, Hannah, Tina.
own one of the same clothing items as you: Angela since we went to the same high school and have several of the same school shirts; Laurice since we share a college org and we have our own trademark polo shirt; and my brother and I have our own pairs of Nike Cortez shoes.
make you laugh: Andi, Hans, and this girl I had a couple of history classes with, Rose.
List three celebrities who...
are the same height as you: Lady Gaga and AJ Lee are the only ones who are coming to mind. I wouldn’t call AJ a celebrity though.
have the same hair color as you: Mila Kunis, Kelly Rowland, Dita Von Teese.
look like you: Only based on comments I’ve gotten in the past and not because I necessarily claim these for myself, Lucy Hale, Anna Akana, and Kakie.
List three....

academic courses you enjoyed: Philippine social history, international relations, anthropology.
words you always forget how to spell: Rhythm, committee, accommodate.
things you wish you were better at: Singing, dancing, drawing.
things you are really good at: Writing, reading people, and knowing the best things to order at most restaurants hahahah.
jobs you'd like to have: Ideally, a lawyer or doctor. But realistically, I’d love to have a leadership position in the PR sphere.
jobs you've considered having: ^ Again, lawyer and doctor. Also a journalist or news anchor, back when I still thought I was passionate about journalism.
jobs you'd hate: Journalist, an LTO clerk, an assistant to an asshole celebrity.
things you miss: Being a student, many parts of the past, and deceased family members.
names your mom considered when naming you: Ariel, Kathleen, Katrina.
things people call you: Robyn, Byn, Bynbyn.
*Bonus*: what is your name? (first and middle)? I always feel like just sharing Robyn.

what are your thoughts on brittana? i'm always surprised when my fellow sapphics prefer klaine to brittana tbh because most of my wlw friends love brittana and hate klaine. btw i love your writing!!
hello! my thoughts on them are good but fairly mild. like, i love them together and i enjoy watching their connection in canon. i’m so glad that they got their happy ending and that sapphics all over the world got to see that happen. i also really enjoy them together in fic, although i don’t actively seek out brittana-centric stories. i also don’t mind reading them with other people (i’ve read some good fics with santana x dani in the background and really enjoyed the dynamic), whereas i can’t multi-ship kurt or blaine.
for me, the root of why i prefer klaine is because of how deeply i love and relate to kurt. i see so much of myself in him and he’s been my favourite character since the show aired, and he just like,,, lives in my heart. and i know they had their ups and downs but kurt and blaine’s love really resonates with me.
i must say, during my lockdown re-watch, santana’s coming out storyline had a giant impact on me, probably because I had gone through that journey myself in the time since i had last watched the show. it felt a lot more important to me this year than it did when i watched it as a 12 year old deep in comphet.
oh another thought (and sorry for rambling) but i guess another reason i prefer klaine is that i am nothing like santana or brittany, so while it would seem that they would be more relatable for me in the sense that they are wlw, i really do relate more to kurt - maybe that has something to do with it? i can’t see myself in them. but i still appreciate the representation they gave us and understand what it means to other sapphic women. is any of this making sense fjkdsgh
(also thank u so much!!)
#brittana#klaine#glee#i don't know what to tag this as#also i feel like i rambled and did Not explain myself properly#but basically i like brittana but i love klaine#Anonymous

Saw somethings about vanderpump rules on the blog! Can we talk about the freaking reunion? I used to root for britany but she is literally ruining herself to defend jax bad behavior! They think they’re the king and queen of vanderpump. Brittany was saying she is trying to fix him? Like girl you settled and it’s embarrassing. Why would she want to be married to a man that has no accountability for literally anything. She could have done so much better and still have a spot on the show.
they r def the king and queen of the show, they r the highest paid cast members which is insane. And u can tell it got to their heads...

My Selections for GRAMMYS 2020
Continuing what I started last year here’s my reaction to the GRAMMY Nominations with my selections for who I believe should win, and also who I would have picked for each category.
Let me first lay out the ground rules: - I will be following the time frame for eligibility which is October 1st 2018 to September 30th 2019. - I will be ignoring categories for genres I don’t listen to enough. Metal, Country, Classical, Jazz, will be left off. - I am ignoring that the Performance categories are a mixture of recordings and live performances and just treating them as genre specific “Records of the year” awards. The one’s with “Song” in the title are geared more towards the song writing. - I will first make my selection of the available options. Bold and underlines will be my top selection with underlined not bold as my runner up. - I will then make my own selections for each category and who I think should win out of that. - My selection is not just a list of my favorite albums. My selections will be a balancing act taking in account artistic accomplishments, Impact both culturally and popularity as well as what I personally think is good. - I made a few liberties with some of my selections, mostly from the rules for eligibility being vague in spots. - This list is just all my biased suggestions. I’m sure there will be some major differences in opinions with anybody who reads this. - Feel free to shoot me a message to discuss more with me anything you wish to!

okay here is my definitive ranking of the performances in the 2020 grammys
lil nas x and everyone singing old town road. the aesthetics. the outfit changes. the SET. THE VIBES. it was the MOST fun.
lizzo’s opening number. setting the fucking ENERGY. that black dress was incredible.
demi lovato. i love her so much and even though it’s not the best technical performance, or the most interesting, it was by far the most emotional for me.
usher’s prince tribute. it was SUCH a delight, oh my god, and also that hot dancer needs to call me.
tanya tucker and brandi carlile. that song fully fucks me up thank you.
h.e.r. is such a talent and a gift and a legend and i loved her performance SO. MUCH.
alicia keys and boyz ii men singing a cappella. heartbreaking but still, like, nice.
smokey robinson and little big down singing a cappella. listen, it was cute. even if something almost identical happened last year.
the nipsey hussle tribute. i don’t know nipsey hussle’s music but it was such a good and energetic and loving tribute.
rosalia. the energy was AMAZING i could watch her dance all day and also malamente as a song fucking rules.
trombone shorty and the preservation band. a nice little pick me up! fun and cute.
the first third of ariana grande’s performance, where she sang imagine and then the fun weird orchestral version of my favorite things.
alicia keys and brittany howard. it was fine? they both were having a lot of fun, and i liked the song and the staging, but it was a little bland.
camila cabello and very specifically the part where she went to her own actual father to sing to him directly. that got me!
the jonas brothers. i have to be real, they’re mostly ranked this high because of their outfits. if it weren’t for that they would be like six spots lower.
gary clark jr and the roots. i didn’t like the performance overly much but it’s noteworthy because i think it’s the only performance in this show that resulted in me actively wanting to look up the performer.
billie eilish. girl can SING. also her brother’s tux jacket ruled.
bonnie raitt. kind of bland but a good song and i like her!
tyler, the creator. it’s not my normal stuff and it didn’t do much for me but the aesthetics were outrageously good.
the group cover of i sing the body electric, which was well done from a performance standpoint and was fun to watch but at that point i was sitting there like. mr ehrlich i am BEGGING you to end this show i have been watching it for THREE AND A HALF HOURS. if it’d been earlier it would be higher tbh.
alicia keys’s lewis capaldi cover, which i have to assume would’ve been her opening number if it weren’t for the boys ii men thing. it was fine but it also feels very much like it was a producer’s idea because it didn’t fit in with the tone she was cultivating.
aerosmith with run dmc, which was fine but went on faaaaaar too long.
the last two thirds of ariana grande’s performance, where she sang 7 rings and thank u next. if i wanted to watch the music videos, i would. and honestly, don’t do a super dance intensive performance and have the recorded version of your song play over it. boring.
blake shelton and gwen stefani. what a completely forgettable performance. if i did not literally have it listed in front of me i wouldn’t have remembered to include it.

Hey but sorry to bother u but could give me those book recs? Relying on u girl
of course!! sorry bout the long wait, dear x
you said you preferred trilogies or series’ (which i don’t read much of tbh) so here are a few of my favorites: (( some of these will have full on summaries and some… not so much, i got lazy lol ))
The Lux Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout : Meet Katy and Daemon! Katy is a funny, down-to-earth book blogger who has just moved to West Virginia. And Daemon? Well, he’s her hot and arrogant next-door neighbor. He’s also an alien. This one is cheesy, yeah, but it’s so FUN! Follow along as Katy and Daemon try to figure out what they mean to each other while trying not to get killed by the Arum; the Lumen’s enemy. In this world, the DOD is well aware that aliens exist and that they live on Earth. However, they are unaware that the aliens known as Luxen actually possess powers that make them.. well… powerful beyond means. This isn’t just a romance story; it focuses on family and friendships and it has a bunch of kick ass action and the entire plot with the DOD is so interesting.
The Pine Deep Series by Jonathan Maberry ; I’m only on the first book but this one is a bit more mature in terms of horror and things like that. If you like scary books or feel like being spooky in time for Halloween, you should definitely check this one out!
The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare : I’m sure you know about this one, but if you don’t! Angels, demons, warlocks, vampires, faeries, werewolves? What more could you want? When Clary Fray discovers she’s actually a Shadowhunter; an appointed warrior of the Angel Raziel and has angel blood coursing through her veins, her life is about to change forever. Join her and the rest of the Shadowhunter gang (and even a few others) as they team up to rescue her mom and stop an all out war from happening.
The Darkest Minds Series by Alexandra Bracken ; I’m only on the first book but I absolutely love it! It’s an intense read that has me on the edge of my seat constantly. I adore Ruby and she’s easily become one of my favorite female characters of all time.
Dorothy Must Die Series by Danielle Paige ; Okay. I know, I know. Really? Dorothy Must Die? Hear me out! This book is FUN. Trashy? Perhaps, but fun! The first book is really fast paced and honestly? I am living for a world where Dorothy is evil. So basically our main character is named Amy and she is the other girl from Kansas. She’s sent to Oz to save it from Dorothy Gale who has become power hungry and is now pure evil along with the Tin-Man, the Lion, and the Scarecrow. The rest of the series doesn’t really live up to the first book, but I would say you should read the first one anyway. It’s a lot of fun.
Did I Mention I Love You Series by Estelle Maskame: Sixteen-year-old Eden Munro decides to spend the summer with her father in Santa Monica as her parents are divorced now. Once there, she meets her father’s new family and that includes Tyler Bruce; her new asshole step brother with a short temper and a huge ego but as she gets to learn more about him, she finds herself falling for him. This trope isn’t for everyone and I know the whole step sibling thing is super taboo but this series is awesome and I read it during a huge reading slump and it really helped me get though it.
Perfect Chemistry Series by Simone Elkeles: When Brittany Ellis walks into chemistry class on the first day of senior year, she has no clue that her carefully created “perfect” life is about to unravel before her eyes. She’s forced to be lab partners with Alex Fuentes, a gang member from the other side of town, and he is about to threaten everything she’s worked so hard for―her flawless reputation, her relationship with her boyfriend, and the secret that her home life is anything but perfect. Alex is a bad boy and he knows it. So when he makes a bet with his friends to lure Brittany into his life, he thinks nothing of it. But soon Alex realizes Brittany is a real person with real problems, and suddenly the bet he made in arrogance turns into something much more. (Each book in this series focuses on a different Fuentes brother.)
Fighting to Be Free Series by Kirsty Moseley: Jamie Cole has just been released from juvenile detention. Determined to go straight, he tries to cut ties with crime boss Brett Reyes - but Brett has no intention of letting him go. Jamie’s life is already more complicated than it needs to be, yet it’s when he meets a beautiful stranger at a bar that Jamie knows he’s really in over his head. Ellie Pearce has just come out of a terrible relationship and isn’t looking for anything serious; until she meets Jamie. Their attraction is overwhelming and intense - she can’t seem to shake her growing feelings for him, even though she’s trying to keep it casual. But when fate goes horribly wrong and Jamie’s family is faced with ruin, he’s forced to strike a deal with Brett. Despite his struggles, he wants nothing more than a future with Ellie. That’s until Ellie finds out that he’s been hiding more from her than she could ever imagine.
Mind if I drop in a few stand alone’s? I’m trying to read more series’ but I’ve always been more of a stand alone kind of girl, so here are some of my current favs:
#MurderTrending by Gretchen McNeil : WELCOME TO THE NEAR FUTURE, where good and honest citizens can enjoy watching the executions of society’s most infamous convicted felons, streaming live on The Postman app from the suburbanized prison island Alcatraz 2.0. When seventeen-year-old Dee Guerrera wakes up in a haze, lying on the ground of a dimly lit warehouse, she realizes she’s about to be the next victim of the app. Knowing hardened criminals are getting a taste of their own medicine in this place is one thing, but Dee refuses to roll over and die for a heinous crime she didn’t commit. Can Dee and her newly formed posse, the Death Row Breakfast Club, prove she’s innocent before she ends up wrongfully murdered for the world to see? Or will The Postman’s cast of executioners kill them off one by one?
One Small Thing by Erin Watt : Meet Beth and Chase. Beth is entering her senior year and is still trying to move on from the death of her older sister three years ago. In a small town with parents who have suddenly become her wardens; that seems nearly impossible. And then she meets the mysterious and hot Chase who immediately draws her in. Their attraction is instant and he’s the first person who makes her feel like Beth Jones and not Lizzie; the young girl who lost a sister and is somehow broken by it. But as she falls harder for Chase, she’s hit with the reality of the part he played in her sister’s death. It’s about forgiveness, love, and moving on. It’s sad and sweet and such a fun, quick read. Definitely good for trying to get out of a slump!
Autoboyography by Christina Lauren : Fangirl meets Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda in this funny and poignant coming-of-age novel from New York Times bestselling author Christina Lauren about two boys who fall in love in a writing class—one from a progressive family and the other from a conservative religious community. If you read one book off of this list, PLEASE let it be this one. This book is so… amazing. It’s been months and I still think about it constantly.
Fault Line by C. Desir : Trigger WARNING: THIS BOOK CONTAINS A RAPE. It is not shown, but it’s the main conflict in the book. Over the years I have struggled with if I liked this book because it was good or if I liked it because of how much it fucked me up. I read this book in one sitting and when I finished, I sat in my bed for a good hour and just…. didn’t move or do anything. You will NOT be rooting for the main couple. The narrator is unlikable and you will HATE all the characters in this book. The ending is NOT happy and I don’t know why I’m recommending this but GOD. This book, after so many years, just stuck with me because of how fucked up it was. It deals with the whole “recovery” process in such a dark way that we normally don’t see in YA fiction and I think that’s what makes it stand out so much. If you want something darker, read this. But read it with caution. If this isn’t something you like then please, don’t bother reading it. It’s not happy and it’s sure as shit not fluffy. Summary : Ben could date anyone he wants, but he only has eyes for the new girl—sarcastic free-spirit Ani. Luckily for Ben, Ani wants him too. She’s everything Ben could ever imagine. Everything he could ever want. But that all changes after the party. The one Ben misses. The one Ani goes to alone. Now Ani isn’t the girl she used to be, and Ben can’t sort out the truth from the lies. What really happened, and who is to blame? Ben wants to help her, but she refuses to be helped. The more she pushes Ben away, the more he wonders if there’s anything he can do to save the girl he loves.
Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero : If you like Scooby-Doo or Archie’s Weird Mysteries this book is probably for you. 1990. The teen detectives once known as the Blyton Summer Detective Club are all grown up and haven’t seen each other since their fateful, final case in 1977. Andy, the tomboy, is twenty-five and on the run, wanted in at least two states. Kerri, one-time kid genius and budding biologist, is bartending in New York, working on a serious drinking problem. At least she’s got Tim, an excitable Weimaraner descended from the original canine member of the team. Nate, the horror nerd, has spent the last thirteen years in and out of mental health institutions, and currently resides in an asylum in Arhkam, Massachusetts. The only friend he still sees is Peter, the handsome jock turned movie star. The problem is, Peter’s been dead for years. The time has come to uncover the source of their nightmares and return to where it all began in 1977. This time, it better not be a man in a mask. The real monsters are waiting.
Fatal Throne by Candace Fleming ; A book about Henry VIII and his six wives. If you like historical fiction then this book might be for you! It’s told through the perspective of his six wives (and even Henry himself) and it’s a really fascinating read.
Okay, I think I’m going to stop here. Let me know if none of these speak to you and I’ll give you some more recs! I didn’t know what kind of genres you liked, so I tried to throw in a little bit of everything.

Hyperpop - a folk tradition for the 21st Century
Note for SAE: This blog was written for assessment based on the module guide instructions, not the formal instructions as discussed with Toby Wren
“Folk music is any style of music which represents a community and can be sung or played by people who may or may not be trained musicians, using the instruments available to them.” (Ruehl, 2019)
“This is popular culture as folk culture: a culture of the people for the people.” (Storey, 2014)
If you played the word association game with one-hundred fans of music and gave them the words “folk” and “hyperpop” respectively I think you would be hard pressed to find anyone who would associate one with the other immediately. In the 20th and 21st century folk became a term used to describe any mainstream music that wasn’t rock or later ‘pop’. In play lists now it is often coupled with the words “indie” or “acoustic” or “chilled”. But the roots of the folk tradition lie in music that was popular because it was shareable, it was a group experience that was easy to participate in.We see that folk music is still popular now with the sea shanty trend becoming a massive thing on tik tok.
youtube
With so many people spending more time on the internet for entertainment, information and communication there has been a rise of ‘sub-cultures’ or new communities bonded by shared experience, taste or interest. (Bennet, 2014) It is from these emerging communities that hyperpop grows and develops as folk sound of a generation. Hyperpop as a genre has its roots in the soundcloud community, being used as a term in the nightcore remix scene. (Enis, 2020) One of the things that makes hyperpop so unique is that while it serves as a genre tag, what that tag can mean is extraordinarily broad. In an interview one half of hyperpop taste makers 100gecs said that for them, certain Brittany Spears songs could go on a Hyperpop playlist. (Patel, 2020) In the same interview the interviewer described hyperpop as a stacking of multiple genres at their peak, extremely relatable, nostalgic and hooky. (ibid.)
I think the strongest thing that ties hyperpop to the folk tradition is it’s use of popular culture references in its production. Looking at a list of samples used by 100gecs (whosampled, n.d.) there are so many well known elements like minecraft sounds, Drake songs, Alt rock from the mid 2000s, a funk and soul instrumental from the 60s, anime sounds, the list of references covers all parts of pop culture in a way that is so reflective of the ‘gen z’/‘zoomer’ mentality. Now with unprecedented access to media from throughout space and time the current internet culture is a global one with references from as early as recorded media and as recent as when you are reading this. Additionally, with the internet and forums and message boards dedicated to the collection and distribution of samples and sounds, any producer with a DAW, a couple hours on YouTube and an idea could take the same samples and use them in a completely different way, using the same elements to express a completely new and unique perspective.
Underlying this is another element of the folk tradition that works to hold the music together, that is the recognisable form. While in the folk tradition songs were structured around easy to remember lyrics, stories and simple melodies and were typically short and repeatable (Nettl, 2007) the way we consume music has changed. Since 1949 and the birth of the 45 for music to be playable on the radio it needs to be around three and a half minuets long (McKinney, 2015) and will probably be in verse chorus form, with a catchy chorus that will be rememberable. (Bell, n.d.). Within these forms there are many other features we come to expect from pop music, a standard kick on the 1 and 3, snare on the 2 and 4, predominantly major tonalities and harmonically diatonic, although this is becoming less common. So, while hyperpop is a combination of many sounds, those sounds are organised and recognisable and fit in a form that we understand.
Another element that places the genre firmly in the folk tradition is that it is a real expression. This conclusion is based on the definition of folk music being made by and for the people. (Storey, 2014) My initial response to the genre when I discovered it through memes was to write it off. As a ‘smart musician’ I looked down on it because I thought it was like just eating cake not a balanced diet. I was living with the self-imposed idea that making art had to be hard and complex and that using extended harmony and using incredible metaphors made me better than other musicians. I was wrong for so many reasons. Firstly, when I approached the genre with no social or class based bias, I began to understand. Just because something is the obvious choice doesn’t mean it’s the wrong one. Pop music is popular for a reason, particularly music that is made with the intention of dancing or partying there are rhythms and patterns that are tried and true. And second, I discovered that underneath all the ‘hyper’ tonality were real stories and emotions and experiences that felt so real and human in contrast to their setting. Hyperpop being such a broad umbrella means that it is the place where people who don’t fit neatly into other genres or scenes can feel connected. When asked what they view their role as leaders of the genre was 100gecs replied with promoting accessibility within the genre, for people who are underappreciated but making the music they like to have and audience and a community. (Patel, 2020) In my listening to hyperpop playlists and artists recommended to my by my friends I have heard songs on topics ranging from love, heartbreak, feeling great about yourself, hating yourself, being high, being sober, loving both of those things, making food, walking a dog, being angry at someone. If there is an experience to be expressed, you can express it in hyperpop.
Side note: I think that the use of autotune and heavy vocal distortions lowers the barrier to entry, now artists can use their voice as an instrument when in the traditional way of thinking about singing they weren’t deemed ‘good enough’
In the same way there are no real rules to sing a folk song in a pub or with your family, there are no real rules about writing hyperpop, the music can be coupled with every emotion and serves to take it to the extreme.
The last tie that holds hyperpop in the folk tradition is the way it is spread. While folk would traditionally be passed from family member to family member or friend to friend, often learned through doing. Hyperpop found it’s rise in meme culture of the internet. 100gecs gained most of their mainstream notoriety through being shared in a facebook music meme group, where internet reviewer and indie taste setter Anthony Fantano found them and gave them a review on his channel leading to millions of people discovering the music. Beyond this, the band’s image is incredibly well tailored to the zoomer, ‘possitive nihilistic’, ‘nothing matters lets party’ mentality, presenting as both over and underproduced, low-fi, oversaturated and almost intentionally bad. This makes it captivating and almost funny to audiences. The band have spoken against this, saying they’re not trying to be ironic but rather just having fun (Mylrea, 2020). But whether or not the easily memeable nature of the music is intentional or not, it is undeniable to say that it means the music is spread and heard on a much wider basis than it would have otherwise.
Hyperpop will probably never be widely called ‘folk music’ but I think that there are enough similarities that the argument is there to be made. Hyperpop as a genre shares its use of recognisable elements from the new ‘internet culture’ that are controlled in a recognisable form, its use of real and relatable expression and the way it is spread through our new community meeting places with the traditional folk tradition, making it the latest in a long list of music sub-genres to be for the people, from the people.

With the Associated Press and other major media projecting Joe Biden and running mate Kamala Harris as winners of the White House, two glaring questions — just theoretical mere months ago — are now framing Southern California politics: Who would take Harris’ seat in the U.S. Senate? And who could end up with posts in a Biden administration?
Tough tasks lay ahead — and complex choices. “This will be one of the most important, most difficult and yes most costly transitions in modern American history,” Chris Korge, the Democratic National Committee’s finance chair, warned donors in a recent letter obtained by The Associated Press. “There is so much work to do.”
“There’s a lot of different dominoes that could come into play,” said Marcia Godwin, professor of Public Administration at the University of La Verne, an expert in the political appointments process.
That process will begin in Sacramento, where Gov. Gavin Newsom will be tasked with appointing someone to fill Harris’ post for the remaining two years in the U.S. Senate. A clear frontrunner for the post has not yet emerged and Newsom has not publicly tipped his cards. But myriad names — including a half-dozen familiar politicos from Southern California — already have the pundits buzzing.

“The fact that we’ve not had a Latinx U.S. senator looms large,” Godwin said, noting that such a choice could make a bold statement about the state’s diversity.

Observers also think Newsom may be ready to go outside of the Bay Area talent for his pick, tapping the state’s geographical diversity.
Harris and Sen. Dianne Feinstein have deep roots in Northern California. But this year, contenders figure to include players from Los Angeles and Orange counties, where for years a pool of local leaders with contacts in D.C. and fundraising prowess have emerged.
Six names loom large locally:
Alex Padilla, the state’s secretary of state;
Xavier Becerra, the state’s attorney general;
Hilda Solis, Los Angeles County supervisor;
Karen Bass, congresswoman from L.A.;
Katie Porter, congresswoman from Orange County;
and Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia.
All have spent recent days in the political spotlight. All have deep connections in the region — from Padilla’s roots in the San Fernando Valley to Bass’s connection in places like Venice and Fairfax.
Garcia is a popular leader in his adopted hometown and would be a breakthrough pick — he’s young, a Latinx immigrant and openly gay.
Padilla and Becerra are regarded as thoughtful and focused, coming into public from different disciplines — Padilla’s an engineer, Becerra an attorney.
Bass, regarded as a consensus builder, made the short list of candidates considered as Biden’s running mate.
Solis has experience in Washington, having served as Secretary of Labor in President Barack Obama’s administration.
Orange County’s Porter, a freshman congresswoman who rode 2018’s blue wave into office, is a rising star who has clicked off a series of legislative successes.
Some expect Newsom will insist on making his pick a history-making blockbuster. Many are counting on a diverse choice.
“There’s an expectation, I think, for that particular role to be filled with a person of color, no matter what,” said Mark Gonzalez, Los Angeles County Democratic Party chairman.

Voters appear to be thinking along similar lines. The USC Schwarzenegger Institute found in a poll released this week that 76% of California voters want a senator with “a fresh and new voice in politics,” with legislative experience, but able to distinguish themselves from longtime politicians such as Feinstein.
For months, many have speculated that Newsom might be on the cusp of a “historic first” appointment. But according to the poll, 52% say that that didn’t matter, though 31% wanted Newsom to pick the state’s first Latino U.S. senator and 24% want Newsom to choose the state’s first LGBT senator.
The USC survey assessed seven likely frontrunners using a couple of different methods:
In head-to-head comparisons, pitting the seven individuals against each other in one-on-one matchups, Barbara Lee, D-Oakland, got the highest marks. Others considered included Padilla, Bass and Garcia, as well as Rep. Ro Khanna from San Francisco, State Sen. Toni Atkins from San Diego and Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf.

People polled were also asked whether they could support each of the officials individually, without the head-to-head factor. Long Beach’s Garcia polled at the top, followed by Bass and Padilla.
Some may find themselves off Newsom’s list — but not because of perceived flaws or failures. They simply may be seen as too valuable to the party where they are currently serving, Godwin said.
For example, many Democrats say Orange County’s Porter is badly needed in the House, representing a newly blue region that has a fight on its hands to keep from returning red.
However, Porter could be poised for other posts, Godwin said. If Becerra were, say, to become a senator — Porter might be a contender for attorney general, she said.
Other names are floating in California’s political zeitgeist are possible cabinet frontrunners, including Burbank Rep. Adam Schiff and L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti.
If one or both were called to join a Biden team, new scrambles to replace them could break out.
Would L.A. City Councilman Kevin de Leon run for mayor, among others, if Garcetti were called to D.C.? Garcetti, a co-chair of Biden’s campaign, once considered the White House himself. But amid a homeless crisis in the city that drew President Donald Trump’s ire, he held back.
Does Schiff — fresh off winning another term as an L.A. congressman — put off such a move to set his sights on a run to follow Feinstein as senator?
As the man who led the impeachment case against President Trump, Schiff is a hero among Democrats, and he’s among the party’s most prolific fundraisers. But he could be a polarizing force, as someone who’s none too popular with Trump boosters.
Bass is seen as a potential housing and urban development secretary. And Solis has already had a cabinet role, so she’d have a shorter learning curve.
Godwin noted that the roster of potential administration posts extends to the Inland Empire, where representatives like Pete Aguilar, D-Redlands, Mark Allan Takano, D-Riverside, and Rep. Raul Ruiz, D-Hemet, hold varying levels of expertise and ability to work across the political aisle.
“It would be nice if one of them top positions from California was someone with real roots from the greater Los Angeles area was a local resident,” said Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Sherman Oaks.
But he noted that Californians can’t be too greedy.
“It’ll be very hard to get on the phone to yell at Biden (if he fails to choose cabinet members from California) … He’ll just send us a picture of the vice president-elect,” Sherman said.

“For first time since Ronald Reagan, we are sending a Californian to the White House,” said Supervisor Janice Hahn on Saturday morning, echoing the sentiments of many in the Golden State. “As our state’s junior senator, Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris understands the challenges we face—whether it is the housing crisis and homelessness, or the need to expand access to mental healthcare. She is in our corner and I cannot wait to work with her and President Biden on behalf of LA County.”
