A vintage day of cricket in the middle of the sea for the annual eccentricity that is the Bramble Bank cricket match. The Royal Southern YC V The Island Sailing Club slug it out on a small island of sand in the Solent which is only above sea level for about an hour on an extreme low tide. One of many selfies #Veronica the Dowager Countess Lady Lucan took on my phone one night at @thegrouchoclub - Despite her fragility & age it seems impossible that I won’t see her again...watching the swans & pelicans in Green Park sipping tea in my club. Veronica was a true #britisheccentric & a sweet, naughty honourable woman whose quiet rectitude and mischievous wit, lit up every room be it the Groucho (which she loved) or feeding the pelicans at Green Park which was where I first met her in the eighties with my young sons. With the death of Veronica we have lost one of the truly great inspirational women of the age. Her life was as rich in #pathos as a #Restoration #tragedy against a backdrop of opulence & glamour as part of the Clermont Set Veronica was bludgeoned near to death by her husband, lampooned by the press abandoned by her own children & punished by family & friends for seeking justice for her murdered nanny. I once asked her why she’d been treated so poorly & she held my gaze & whispered “because I toppled a God”. After #LordLucan disappeared Veronica retreated into a life of seclusion ...wandering St James’s & #belgravia like a wraith from a lost era, alone with her memories of a man she never stopped loving. ... Her story is the story of all woman throughout time betrayed by their own determination to do - what she saw - as her #duty (at The Groucho Club)

I’m thinking of doing little video clips about the #history of #britisheccentricity & the plethora Of naughty & nice eccentrics I’ve discovered in the archives of the 1600s as I’ve discovered long buried truths & eccentrics who did not fit the Victorian narrative & I will be bringing to light in my book which on pub is the birth of the British eccentric & the creation of #Mayfair which won’t be out till later this year?
