Tom Daley drops one last Speedo video before Olympics ends
Tumblr media
The Paris Olympics Closing Ceremony wrapped this morning but overnight, British diver Tom Daley has squeezed in one last Speedo thirst trap, getting his diving friends in on it too.
The out Olympian put up the video after teaching himself, his diving partner Noah Williams and fellow Brits Jack Laugher, Kyle Kothari, Jordan Houlden, and Anthony Harding the viral dance moves to Charli XCX’s Brat track Apple.
All six of the athletes wore speedos and shoes as they filmed on a rooftop before they went to the closing ceremony in Paris.
“BRAT Summer Olympics ,” Tom wrote.

Tom Daley won silver in Paris
The Paris Olympics closing ceremony wrapped up early this morning (AEST). Actor Tom Cruise and American musicians including Billie Eilish performed as Paris handed the Olympics over to the next host city, Los Angeles. They’ll host in 2028, before the Olympics comes to Brisbane in 2032.
Earlier, Tom Daley and his diving partner Noah celebrated winning the silver in the men’s synchronized 10-meter diving.
Tom won his first gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, and took a long break after his triumph.
The British superstar athlete said he returned to the sport because of his family, specifically his six-year-old son Robbie.
“Robbie was like, ‘Papa, I want to see you dive in the Olympics’. And that was that,” Tom told BBC Sport.
“When your kid asks you to do something, you do it.”

This is a summary of the article that appeared in Bloomberg BusinessWeek, April 3, 2024. I summarized it a fair bit to focus on what was interesting to me in the article. That said, this is still a long read.
Watch out, a couple of swear words in here.
Bluey may be acquired by Disney which would help Disney: 20% of all TV views on the streaming service Disney+ are “Bluey”. In the fourth quarter of 2023 (excluding movies). Americans watched 731 million hours of “Bluey”.
Tumblr media
Brumm accepts an award for best children’s program from the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts in 2019.Photographer: Brendon Thorne/AFI/Getty Images
Joe Brumm is 46, likes sports and surfing, and is brash and unpolished; he seems a little like James Dean in that he’s talented but uncomfortable with fame and having to follow Hollywood conventions and rules… It was noted that Joe Brumm had public relations minders/handlers with him from Disney and the BBC to watch what he said when he was interviewed.
Brumm’s influences include Simpsons, South Park, Peanuts, and Calvin and Hobbes. “Peanuts just meant so much to me growing up” said Brumm. He studied animation in the 2000s at the University of Brisbane and worked in London for the BBC before returning to Australia in 2010 to start Ludo animation.
He came up with Bluey himself, and it was a hard sell initially that the show would be targeting adults and children. He used a lot of his own experiences with his kids to come up with story ideas.
For a while there was the idea of making the show something like an R-rated version of “Peppa Pig”, but that idea was dropped because there was already a similar adult Australian sitcom about raising kids being piloted.
The Australian Broadcasting Company liked the concept of “Bluey” and provided Brumm with A$20,000 ($13,000 US) to create a pilot, which became “The Weekend” episode of Season 1, which was screened at the Asian Animation Summit in November 2016.
Bluey is created at Ludo’s headquarters in Brisbane rather than contracting out the animation overseas, which allows Brumm to continue to tweak episodes up until the last minute. If there’s something he doesn’t like them. He also uses local vocal talent.
The ABC and BBC put up A$6 million to complete the first season of “Bluey”. The BBC made it possible to do this, providing the lion’s share of funding in exchange for distribution and merchandising rights. Australia didn’t have the resources to make the show happen otherwise.
Brumm was very angry when an early critique of Bluey in 2018 said the show made fun of stay-at-home dads; Blumm said he thought to himself “go fuck yourself”.
Within seven months, Bluey was the most watched series ever on the ABC streaming service with 75 million plays of episodes, which led to the BBC commissioning a second season of the show.
Ludo was able to retain control the show, and Brumm was entitled to a share of the revenue.
By 2019, networks in the US were interested in Bluey: Nickelodeon wanted “Bluey”, but they were worried about the name, because it was too close to “Blue’s Clues”. Other networks wanted to change the accents of the characters, and this was a dealbreaker for Ludo and Brumm.
This created an opening for Jane Gould, who was at the time the executive vice president of research and scheduling at Disney’s general entertainment division, who had a comfort level with Bluey because she hailed from Brisbane, and she understood the desire of Brumm and Ludo to keep the show Australian. She didn’t think this was a problem, and she borrowed two episodes to test screen in the US; the kids and parents didn’t have a problem with the Australian aspects of the show. Disney acquired the rights from BBC Studios to air Bluey everywhere except Australia, New Zealand and China.
“Bluey” didn’t get the same marketing push as shows like “The Mandalorian” when Disney+ began broadcasting "Bluey" in June 2020, but soon begin to dominate viewership numbers, in part due to the COVID-19 pandemic. (There was a lot of families spending time watching television and they watched a lot of Bluey.)
The ABC didn’t have a problem with the off-colour humour in “Bluey”, like the use of the word “poo”, and seeing a pony poop in “Markets” and this had to be edited out. Brumm said he hated making these edits... Disney defended these edits saying they were trying to be respectful of different cultural sensitivities, and it’s noted that Disney has since released the uncensored versions of the episodes.
Brumm likes to control his creation. He was upset with some of the early prototypes of Bluey toys because Bandit didn’t look right, he looked like a fridge. He was also concerned that at the beginning that there was too much of a focus on Bluey herself and there weren’t enough toys of all the characters. This concern turned out to be accurate; people wanted toys of all of the characters in the show.
Brumm originally was not sure he wanted to do a second season of “Bluey”, fearing it might not be as good as the first. Brumm doesn’t want to repeat himself in terms of episodes. He wants to make sure that each season is better than the previous one. He was also worried that Bluey would have to stop when Brisbane shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the show continued, with staff working from home.
The “Rain” episode was dialogue-free because Brumm wanted to take a break from writing dialogue at the time.
In Australia, the public and the media have publicly questioned why the ABC didn’t try harder to retain control of the profits from "Bluey" merchandise sales. There was an article in the “Australian Financial Review” that lamented that the ABC had let a gold mine slip through its fingers. It was thought that this decision was shortsighted, but the ABC responded saying they made the best deal at the time that they could. Disney has also been said to have made an error in passing on theme park rights and allowing BBC Studios to retain those rights; people go to Disney parks and ask why they can’t see Bluey there.
Disney isn’t releasing details on whether it’s explored buying “Bluey”, but Ludo says Bluey isn’t for sale, but this could change.
It is noted that there hasn’t been a clear announcement of a fourth season. Brumm has stated previously there will be a hiatus and he’s concerned about the children’s voices changing. His preference not to have to replace the voice actors, and he knows he can’t continue to draw upon his own kids experiences because they’ve grown up.
During the interview, Brumm’s handlers interjected and couldn’t said he couldn’t discuss the final episode.
Speaking anonymously, someone familiar with Disney’s “Bluey” dealings said that Brumm is trying to decide whether he’s comfortable letting other people write for the show, which would make it easier to continue to create episodes, and possibly smooth the way for a Disney acquisition in the future, as Disney would be reluctant to spend billions on a show with only three seasons of episodes.
Brumm said over email that he’s already collaborated on writing some additional episodes and ultimately it isn’t his decision who writes Bluey as he doesn’t own the show.
He thinks the final episode is magical and it sums up everything Bluey has tried to do in the last few years.

We got such a good reaction to last week’s “The Summoning” postcard teasing a graphic novel series that I thought it was a good bet you hadn’t read the interview with creator Elyse Castro that was done in 2017 by the Frederator development group.
frederator-studios:
Frederator Studios’ Cooper Nelson checked in with Elyse Castro, creator of “The Summoning,” the newly released GO! Cartoons short on Cartoon Hangover, to ask a few burning questions. Let’s see if her answers are equally on fire.
Elyse Castro created “The Summoning,” about Claire, a witch, and her cat Edgar, on a quest for a missing spell ingredient. When I asked her our usual opening question—“Where did you study animation?”—Elyse just chuckled.
“Can’t answer that one,” she explained, “I didn’t!”
Rebellious against the ‘usual,’ Castro, of Brisbane, Australia, is a prolific creative, with experience ranging from playwriting to comics to taxidermy—she recently gave blacksmithing a go. Below, she doles out the deets on “The Summoning,” and leads us down her windy path to cartoon-creating.
So what did you study in school?
I went to uni for theater and visual art, but halfway through got really into the culture of tattooing, and became a tattoo apprentice. My Catholic parents were horrified. I was a tattoo artist for several years, then cooled off it—partly because of a hurt wrist, partly because I was tired of people’s shit tattoo ideas.
Tumblr media
I can imagine. So then what’d you get up to?
I was doing freelance comics, some fine art, but also studied to become a drama teacher. I was frustrated about the neglect of arts and theater education in Australia, and decided to quit harping about the problems and lend a hand to the solutions.
Tumblr media
Do you enjoy teaching?
I love connecting with the kids. And it’s creative—I teach at an all boys school, so I often write us alternative plays to fit them better, like our own version of “Robin Hood”. It’s a lot of laughs—I love making people laugh.
Is that why you wanna make cartoons?
Oh yeah – it’s always been a big motivation for me. My biggest goal in life all through growing up, and even now, is to make my sister laugh. It isn’t too hard, she’s thinks I’m a riot. She ended up becoming a research scientist, while I’m an adult entertained by Yo Gabba Gabba.
Tumblr media
I respect that. So then what inspired “The Summoning”?
Certainly my maniac cats [see Winston below]. And actually, a lot of experiences with my sister. Voices we’d use, stupid things we’d do. And some gross stuff. Like, the whole bit with the dandruff in “The Summoning” was based on a time that I picked a big flake of the stuff off her head. I remember it now, a nice, sunny day…
Tumblr media
Aha, gross! Gotcha. What mattered to you while developing your own short?
I thought about what I wanted to see in a cartoon—I’m drawn to the macabre, odd stuff, like my taxidermy. I’m very crafty, always making things, which lends itself to a witch character. And tone-wise, I wanted to keep it real, even have nuggets of education. Like in “The Summoning,” I tucked in a great factoid about poo consumption in the animal kingdom.
Sounds about as educational as a Frederator show gets!
I still can’t believe I have a project with Frederator. It was my childhood dream to make a cartoon, and I’m a huge fan of Pendleton Ward and Natasha Allegri. I even got to work with Natasha, who directed “The Summoning”! I was fangirling, it was so hard to act cool.
What’re your favorite cartoons?
Definitely Daria, Ren and Stimpy, South Park, and Adventure Time.
So about the witchcraft stuff – dabble in witchcraft yourself?
Not really, but I’m very interested in paganism and witchcraft. I study it, love the history behind it. My friends and I mess around with tarot cards sometimes, but I haven’t gone farther than that… yet.
– Cooper
Watch Elyse’s “The Summoning” on Cartoon Hangover!
For the 1 year anniversary of “The Summoning” and Go! Cartoons, bumping @elysecastro‘s interview non-US fans link here!
(this was also my first interview! We’re at ~50 a year later, with video and probs audio ones too on the way. Anthology post forthcoming! ?)

How to Move with Kids within Australia?
Tumblr media
Moving can be a challenging experience for anyone, but when you add children into the mix, the complexity increases significantly. Kids often thrive on routine, and the disruption caused by a move can lead to anxiety, stress, and emotional upheaval. Whether you're moving across town or to a different state within Australia, it's crucial to approach the process with careful planning and consideration for your children's needs. You can also hire movers in Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney or wherever you're shifting to ease out the shifting process. Here are the tips and strategies to help make moving with kids as smooth and stress-free as possible.
1. Prepare Your Kids for the Move
The first step in making a move easier for your kids is to prepare them well in advance. Children need time to process the idea of moving, especially if they've lived in the same place for a long time. Start by discussing the move with them as soon as your plans are confirmed. Explain the reasons for the move in a way that they can understand. Be honest, but emphasize the positive aspects, such as new friends, a bigger house, or exciting local attractions.
Tip: Use age-appropriate language to describe what the move will involve. For younger children, reading books about moving can help them understand the process and ease their fears.
2. Involve Them in the Moving Process
Involving your children in the moving process can help them feel more in control and reduce anxiety. Let them participate in age-appropriate tasks, such as packing their toys, choosing items to donate, or helping to plan the layout of their new room. Create a moving checklist together, giving them a sense of responsibility. Assign simple tasks like labelling boxes or packing their belongings.  You can also consider their suggestions when choosing the moving company in Brisbane as this can make them feel like an important part of the move.
3. Keep Their Routine Intact
Children thrive on routine, and moving can disrupt their sense of stability. To minimize the impact, try to maintain as much of their daily routine as possible during the moving process. Stick to regular meal times, bedtimes, and activities like storytime or after-school sports. Consistency will help provide a sense of normalcy during this transitional period.
Tip: If possible, schedule the move around school holidays to avoid disrupting their school routine. If a mid-term move is unavoidable, work with their new school to ensure a smooth transition.
4. Plan for the Moving Day
Moving day can be chaotic, especially with kids in tow. Plan ahead to ensure that the day goes smoothly and that your children are safe and occupied. You can arrange for a babysitter, family member, or friend to look after younger children on moving day. This will allow you to focus on the move without having to worry about their safety.
Tip: Pack a special moving-day kit for your kids with snacks, games, books, and comfort items. This will help keep them entertained and calm during the move.
5. Explore the New Neighbourhood Together
Once you've arrived at your new home, take time to explore the neighbourhood with your kids. Familiarizing them with their new surroundings can help them feel more at home and excited about the move.
Tip: Take walks around the neighbourhood to discover nearby parks, playgrounds, and other kid-friendly spots. Visit their new school, local shops, and any nearby attractions to help them feel more comfortable in their new environment.
Conclusion
Moving with kids within Australia can be a challenging task, but with careful planning, open communication, and a positive attitude, you can turn it into a smooth and even enjoyable experience. It is critical to choose from the best Moving Companies in Australia to shift with comfort and ease. Remember, moving is not just about changing locations; it's about creating new opportunities and memories for your family to cherish.

Vic bookshop owner wants books to be more white and less gay
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/victoria-bookshop-owner-wants-books-to-be-more-white-and-less-gay/
Vic bookshop owner wants books to be more white and less gay
Tumblr media
The owner of a Victorian bookstore chain has apologised after she called for more picture books with “just white kids on the cover” and less “wheelchair, rainbow or Indigenous” representation.
Susanne Horman has owned the Robinsons Bookshop chain since 2007. There are a number of the indie bookstores across Melbourne.
At the weekend, a series of Susanne’s posts from her personal Twitter X account, written last month, circulated online.
In the posts, she called for Australian publishing to put out more “white family stories” with “white kids” on the covers, and less “wheelchair, rainbow or Indigenous” representation.
“What’s missing from our bookshelves in store?” Susanne Horman wrote in a now-deleted post, accompanied by the hashtag #weneedbetterstories.
“Positive male lead characters of any age, any traditional nuclear white family stories, kids picture books with just white kids on the cover, and no wheelchair, rainbow or indigenous art, non indig [sic] aus history.”
In another post, she also vowed not to stock diverse books that are “against white Australians” and “cause harm and make Australians hate each other”.
“Books we don’t need: hate against white Australians, socialist agenda, equity over equality, diversity and inclusion (READ AS anti-white exclusion), left-wing govt propaganda. Basically the woke agenda that divides people. Not stocking any of these in 2024.”
‘So wildly out of pocket’
At the weekend, an Instagram account coffeebooksandmagic shared the now-deleted social media posts, with hundreds of commenters calling them out.
The account owner clarified she’s “not one for willy nilly ‘cancelling’ but the comments … are so wildly out of pocket that I have no problem suggesting a widespread boycott would be appropriate”.
“[Susanne Horman] has not only said she wants more white people on covers and in books, but goes further to say that she won’t be stocking anything that … well, what, exactly? Isn’t about white people?” she wrote.
“And then somehow manages to claim that she’s fighting division.
“This kind of mentality has no place in the modern landscape and I truly hope it will eventually die out with the generation that’s as archaic as her website.”
Ouch.

Robinsons Bookshop apologises for comments
Speaking to The Age, Susanne Horman issued an apology to Robinsons Bookshop staff and “anyone who was offended by the comments”. She claimed they had been “taken out of context”.
In a Facebook statement, Robinsons Bookshop also apologised and said the posts “misrepresented the views” of the company.
“We clearly state, so there is no misunderstanding, that we fully support and encourage stories from diverse voices [and] minorities,” the post read.
“We are most definitely stocking these important topics and the authors that write them.
“As a business, we will continue advocating for positive hope-filled stories that bring out the best in all our community and make all people feel supported and fulfilled.
“We ask everyone to treat all of our staff with kindness and respect.”

8 Compelling Reasons Why You Need a Whole Home Generator
Can you imagine your home without electricity? The room is dark, and nothing can lighten the warm breeze in the room. You can already feel sweaty and suffocated just by thinking about it. And even if there is a 24 hour electrician Brisbane available, having no other option but to wait can interrupt many things in your life. Now that people are reliant on power, having a backup is necessary to continue and improve daily life. Owning a home generator becomes a necessity, and here are some compelling reasons why you should own one:
Continuous Power Supply
The first reason to own a home generator is to continuously have a power supply. It will be your backup if there is a power outage and there is no news about when it will return. If you are working at home, have kids or elders, or are sensitive to hot temperatures, consider having a home generator. Do not let a power issue interrupt your life and interfere with your agenda.
Protection Against Weather Events
Blizzards, storms, and hurricanes are common examples of weather events where the power shuts down. If there is news about any of these, prepare your generator to give you the power you need. Any severe weather events can be a headache to those at home, so do not let yourself be one of them by having a generator.
Preservation of Food
When the power is out, the first rule you will encounter is not to open the refrigerator. It is because the temperature inside the appliance will reduce, affecting the food and drinks inside. If there is not enough coldness in the refrigerator, it can spoil food and let it go to waste. For those with food inside the freezer, you need to be mindful of the melting goods, like ice cream, ice, and processed food. Even if the first two are not eligible for spoiling, they will melt. There are many different ways to preserve food, and maintaining refrigerator temperature is one of the most important.
Maintaining Home Security
If your power is out, your security cameras, electric locks, alarms, and other home security systems will not work. And when that happens, your place can be vulnerable and become a target of burglars. Having a home generator can make you feel safe and comfortable in your own space because every security tool is operational.
Preservation of Electronics
When there is a power outage, you cannot charge your gadgets, so it could be a problem if everything is on low battery. But aside from them, your refrigerator, computer, air conditioner, and television can also face problems. Once the power is out, turn them off or unplug them to avoid damage. The issue can also be faced by those with smart home devices, so if you have any of these, a home generator is a worthy investment.
Operational Home Offices
Home offices need to work all the time, even if the shift is done. Power interruptions mean you cannot work for the day, affecting your productivity. Ensure to keep your home office operational by having a home generator. In this time that remote work is becoming more common, a power outage is one of the problems you need to have a solution to.
Continuity of Medical Equipment
People who have working medical equipment in their homes also need to own a home generator. It is common for people with elders or loved ones who are getting their recovery and rest at home. If there is a power interruption, it can influence the entire operation, putting lives at risk. For sure, you would never want that to happen, so investing in a home generator is something you might want to consider.
Preserving Entertainment Options
If you are just at home and the power outage happens at exactly the most boring time of your day, you will surely look for something that can pass your time. Entertainment options include television, gaming consoles, and streaming services. Make them work with the help of your generator and pass the time until the power returns.
Home generators might not be common to many, but it is a need people should have. These reasons will not just help in your decision-making, but they can also open you to things or events that you did not imagine could happen.
