wild times in the spare change fandom

(there is canonically rpf, the landscape of which changed over the course of the band’s existence, the original popular pairing of which was Bridie x Cardinal with Ishani x Leon as a secondary pairing. They’re obviously not “canon” but with none of them having public statements out regarding their sexualities I understand where they’re drawing the chemistry from, similarly in a meta way, in some delusional future in which i am famous, I would also understand the context in which someone would want to ship that. There was slash fic at this time but the gay ships got more popular the longer the band existed and there were more interviews to pull from and the four of them just got more comfortable joking with each other about stuff like that.

I’d like to go on a small tangent about Leon because in a bizarre turn of events he has slowly marinated some flavour while i wasn’t looking and now I have things to say about him. I think he gets treated similarly to the way that Hozier is treated. “WHY DOES HE DRIVE THE GOLF CART LIKE THAT IM CRYINGGGGGGG 😭😭😭”

especially the way that people lose their minds over those angelic back lit live photos

Though with Hozier ppl are like ‘shout out to hozier for inventing love’, (talking about his lyricism) but that doesn’t happen with Leon because he doesn’t write the lyrics to the songs — although Vivian thinks that he should. Instead it’s about the things that he says in interviews and the weird existential poetic shit that he says far too offhandedly for comfort. He ended up getting banned from talking in interviews bc he kept turning simple questions into anxious musings about the universe and no one knew how to move on from it.

he was mad about getting banned for a while until an alternative type culture show requested an interview with him and he and the interviewer just sat on the floor on sequinned pillows and spoke at length about that kind of philosophical stuff and the fans lost their fucking shit let me tell you. VCR’ed to death. and then there were copies made of the copies bc everyone needed their own copy. following the collapse of the band it eventually was reincarnated (2011) into who could get the most artistic generation loss coupled with super distorted and slowed spare change music something something metaphor for corruption. idk he found out about it later and was like. you know what. it was very traumatic but yeah this is comforting in a very weird way.

There was a series of some sort that he was extremely invested in (which i haven’t invented the barest trace of a premise for yet.) and was later the appointed president of the local fan club for it, after being a loyal submitter of fanfic for the zine for several years. and oh yeah baby we’re on some trekkie type shit here. Leon Barta most prolific slash fic writer in the whole prefecture.

this is the early 90s btw. he changed mediums with the dawn of the internet. i’ll explain the way the trallum internet works later but he had a personal page that linked from the main fanclub page (think old geocities/neocities) where he posted his work. That page was later taken down as spare change began to pick up traction and someone found it and panic ensued as he didn’t remember the login to it and he was freaking out so badly that he convinced dick to call the admin people at The Internet to get it taken down from the other end (damage control now, ask questions later). neglected to mention what was actually ON the page tho

Ishani figured it out pretty quickly though and maintained her poker face honourably but broke down the end.

She knew because she was his long suffering editor and spent time in the public library with him while he built the website in the first place.

Their high school time was strange. they both identified as lesbians at that time for context and both agreed with the concept of ‘yes i am a lesbian but i do not like the concept of participating in lesbian sex. maybe I’m just lying to myself’. fast forward eeerereewwewewewweeerrrreeeupp. asexual lesbian and straight trans man. it all made sense to them in retrospect but at the time ishani spent most of her time being endlessly frustrated at anything and everything to distract from the main issue (complicated feelings too messy for her to want to deal with. Very heteronormative in that it’s a given that she’d marry a man, but that’s a deep issue in conflicts between culture and scripture and victorian colonisation and she really just wants to get through school with good grades right now. unpacks it later in her 20s but using aimless frustration as a coping mechanism with being uncomfortable never went away which is again a problem in itself) and leon had some kind of weird guilt complex over being a lesbian but writing purely about men fucking other men.

there was considerable public jealousy of bridie when she and leon announced they were together (mostly the leon fan folk who were angry they couldn’t get with him and also are fourteen and need to get some sleep bc they have school tomorrow). and then natural follow up is oh okay so cardinal x ishani.

she is a meddler, and she will meddle in your life every chance you give her (and even when you don’t)

she’s a sweetheart, though, and fiercely loyal to the people she loves

but she’s not a fool, no matter what impression she gives off from day to day; ivy is a fairly good judge of character, and is careful to only give her true self to the people who love her best

that’s not to say you’re likely to run afoul of the girl, however – though. should you find that you have, beware of glitter bombs: a shower of stupidity for the world to see

for the most part, ivy is genuinely warm and kind, and though she does have the overstuffed ego of so many other athletes of her calibre, her ego should always be taken with a grain of salt; the girl is about as down to earth as they come

and that’s pretty impressive, considering she’d always rather be on a broom.

not happy with it from the mid chest area downward. i think i need to put the gun hand back bc idk how else it’s going to use its attacks. the fain focus tho was getting rid of its silly little wheels bc the only reason it had that in the first place was bc it was a stage prop and needed a way to move around. I, however, have made it into a huge drivable mech bc that’s way cooler. The waist area is super vulnerable rn idk what i was thinking, especially when the exact opposite is true for the original prop.

also old screencap redraws that i’ve posted before but i’m posting again bc i literally make the rules. They’re both from episode 16(?)- battle aboard the st anne. a fantastic episode in which a cruise ship sinks to the bottom of the ocean and then the police hold a funeral for ash and the gang in the next episode (pokemon shipwreck) bc they couldn’t save them. actually the drawing on the left hand side might be from pokemon shipwreck bc they’re shocked that team rocket isn’t dead. as for the drawing on the right, i can’t tell in the episode if they’re sunburnt, just gyaru, or if they look sunburnt bc they ARE gyaru. i went for sunburnt bc it just seems funny to me that they’d intentionally make themselves sun burnt just for a bit.

Bridie-centric lore dump

So Bridie is from a farm. She’s basically the Trallum version of Texan, and as a kid attended a fairly liberal Ustist church (religion derived from Déstism. doesn’t matter what all the words mean, just pretend she’s like a pagan and Déstism is catholicism. that’s how different the two are).

She grew up speaking in a rural dialect of Darmattan which is very difficult for Royal Darmarttan speakers to understand. But then when she moved to Trallum she adopted Trallum Standard Darmarttan Dialect (TSDD) out of convenience.

She’s the youngest of five kids. Drove a tractor into a ditch at the age of eight (1986). Her family mostly farmed wheat. The Trallum Rally Championships were held on roads very close to her farm so she’d often go and see them (her parents had a touch of the farm flavour of ‘irresponsible’, you know, anything is legal on a farm, you’re also immune to injury as long as the job gets done).

She did kind of an au pair thing where she stayed with another family while she went to high school in Trallum. She came out when she was seventeen (1995) and no one was really surprised but there were two friends that weren’t too on board with the whole thing. But in general the prefecture she lived in and the au pair family was pretty accommodating. She got a job driving a forklift at a garden centre to try and pay for her HRT (yes, she is forklift certified).

she was also in a band around this time called The End of the World and a Pancake Breakfast, which was alright for a while but her special interest is music and can play pretty much any instrument, knows a heap about music theory, etc, and the other members of the band kind of felt ‘threatened’ by her bc she could technically replace any of them bc she could do all their parts. And it caused problems bc she was too over enthusiastic and it came across as bossy/pushy, even though that really wasn’t her intention at all.

The band fell apart.

And so when she joined Spare Change she kind of just kept quiet and never mentioned that she could do anything other than play the drums.

In early days she had a thing for Katherine, kind of a star struck thing bc Katherine did used to race in the rally championships, and also she was hanging around with the band a lot initially for reasons that i won’t go into here. But also like this is Katherine we’re talking about out, completely understandable for Bridie to be a bit smitten.

Katherine arranged for herself, Tarlin, and Bridie to go out to a race course (not rally) and zoom around for a day.

Then in early 2008(?) they were on tour, Ishani got hit by a light, had to go to hospital and suddenly they were in need of a guitarist and a second vocalist with mere hours until they needed to be on stage. Bridie had a little drum machine that was out of service so she was like ‘Dick if u can get a technician to fix that then I can program it for tonight and then fill in for Ishani’. and everyone in the room was confused as fuck because they’ve never seen Bridie pick up a guitar and in any case surely she can’t learn all those songs in that amount of time? wrong. she knew the songs the whole time.

And to ease her voice dysphoria she went on drunk, gave both leon and cardinal a beer or two, whole show started going slightly downhill and at the very end Cardinal fell off the stage but critics said ‘the atmosphere was phenomenal, a surprisingly raw and vulnerable side to Spare Change,’ the live versions were also immensely popular bootlegs because Bridie’s whole guitar style is very rock and gave the songs a different sound.

Ishani was lowkey pissed because not only did she not get to perform with Hopscotch (who were doing the set too) (Ishani is kind of a bit in love with Hopscotch) but also the fact that everyone seemed so excited for Bridie and the applause was unlike anything Ishani had ever gotten.

Bridie’s point in the argument was that she’s the drummer and doesn’t appear in nearly as much promo material or interviews as any of the other three. People were hyped because she doesn’t get to do much otherwise.

Ishani was mostly panicking because her arm was broken and her face scarred and she was doubting her ‘usefulness’ to the band and didn’t want to be suddenly replaced. Her being physically in pain was kind of stressing her out and while she’s fairly level headed and rational, the loss of control was not good for her.

the argument went on for a while and Leon was pretty torn between supporting his childhood best friend (Ishani) and the woman that he was falling in love with (Bridie)

it eventually ended with Bridie kind of going ‘look, if you don’t want me here you can replace me with a machine you can fit in a suitcase. Choice is yours.’

And so things calmed down.

But they did go on hiatus for a bit to let Ishani get better, and Bridie went back to do farm work for a while.

Leon and Bridie like each other bc they’re good foils. Leon experiences a lot of existential anxiety which he doesn’t really know how to express and it keeps him up at night sometimes but Bridie chills him right out and just says silly things to take his mind off it. And Bridie absolutely cannot keep track of time but Leon stresses out about making everything on time and keeping things in order so he’s good at reminding her when things need to be done and making sure that they do actually get done. Issues arise when Bridie does stupid shit and then Leon gets worried about her

She likes to self medicate with whatever the trallum version of weed is, mostly in edibles, but she went off it for a while in 2006 to try ritalin which she was really bad at remembering to take. But she was also really bad at remembering where she put her brownies which miraculously only ended badly once.

Following the events of DotMPC she pursues a solo career which Dick actually suggested to her shortly before the book begins (he tolerates her slightly more than the others so that means they’re practically besties)

She can also skateboard and has matching star tattoos with Leon <3

Ishani is the only member of Spare Change to keep anything music related as her cutie mark, because she really really likes music.

Stargaze is just a combo of actual stargaze and shoegaze, because after the whole spare change thing goes south she joins a shoegaze band, which was what she wanted to play in from the start

Hazy chorus is just a guitar pedal effect but it sounds cool and imo has a similar vibe to stargaze

Ishani is a bit partial to all things existential and she would stargaze quite often as a teen

chart i made bc ahahahahahaha this has been floating in my head for ages

he's pretty easy to write bc he's the voice of the third person limited. So even if he's not expressing himself real well and he's biting people and shit, I can still kind of articulate his frustration bc the writing is taking place semi inside his head. he's also fairly easy to draw but sometimes my brain just dies and decides to not be able to for some reason

slightly harder to write bc i havent actually written her in the main canon yet but she's super fun and easy to write in all my AUs. fine to draw except for her hair. Pulled back/slicked back hair without a fringe is one of my least favourite styles to draw.

I'm still learning how to draw his new design and I can't do it without reference. Again I haven't written him in canon and he's a little tricky bc of the fact that objectively he's lowkey a prick but bc the writing is mostly ever in cardinal's pov, the edge is taken off a little but the fact he's a git still needs to communicate

she's got two different faces that interchange in my head, kind of morphing into one another and i cannot pin them down. She simultaneously has a round face and a square face and it drives me INSANE. as for writing she's difficult because she interacts quite personally with every single character so she has a lot of interactions and relationships to construct and consider and she's in a grey area for majority of them.

she's easier to write bc she's so chill and direct with her communication. She says what she means like 90% of the time. Drawing is a little difficult just bc i did one drawing of her that was perfect and have been unable to replicate it since

okay im still struggling with the whole leon/bridie situation. They're currently the only two people NOT serving any plot relevance and I mean I guess that's okay but even Todd Chavez ended up getting a character arc. I just love Bridie too dearly to push her to the side like that. there's a half formed prequel that I know i could put most of her development/plot into but also i don't trust myself to actually commit and pull through on writing the said prequel

I know they could serve as the example of what happens if you go to therapy and maintain open and honest communication in a relationship (a foil to the shit show, if you will), but I don't know how to integrate that into the story in any way more than a few dramatically ironic gags
