One of the things I like the most of this show is the way they use colors.

Not only there are colors associated with families, like the Bridgerton blue, the yellowish/greenish for the Featherington etc, but also how, at the same time, they are used to convey emotions.

In S1 the colors Simon wears change according to his feelings for Daphne: red when he is prey of his feelings and black/gray when he fights them or mourns them.

The same thing with Daphne, she wears white when she plays the role of the diamond and light blue when she's in her element with her family. And they get darker the stronger her feelings grow.

Same in S2 with kanthony: the intensity of the colors Kate wears does not only change according to her social role (dark colors to indicate she is too old to marry, to facilitate her sister's wedding), but they also symbolize how strong her feeling for Anthony are.

And Anthony starts wearing the Bridgerton blue only in S2, when he opens up to his feelings. Whereas in S1, when he was completely closed off he only wore black.

And yet. Nobody does it like polin.

Like, I'm sorry. Pen changing her wardrobe was one thing. But buying dresses in EVERY POSSIBLE SHADE OF LIGHT BLUE?!

Colin's room walls/curtains being YELLOW?????

And not only that, because just like Anthony, Colin also starts wearing blue more consistently in S2 when he slowly starts having stronger feelings for Pen, despite being in denial of it.

Romance and love are not a distraction. They are not lesser they are not frivolous they are not a silly childish expectation added to stories for a happier ever after. You are not better for not caring about romance, you're not smarter for being more interested in the main plot of a piece of media than the main couple. Romantic love is one of the strongest bonds we have, it can bring people together in a wonderful way and a well written relationship between people who love each other, can say more about philosophy and character and growth then most grand sweeping adventure. Finding love and keeping it, having trust in someone else and showing the venerability a relationship takes, fighting for another person, it's compelling. It pushes people to improve it brings out the best and sometimes the worst in them, it is humanity in the backdrop of war and tragedy and injustices that is the centre point, that's the hope of stories. Romantic love or a persons love interest is not a weak or pathetic motivation either, it's realistic. People will go through hell for the people they care about, for the people they love, and sometimes it's stronger than the noble plot focused reason you've decided should be their motivation. Some people- most people, don't want to save the word or repay a debt or discover some power in themselves, they want to keep the people they love safe, they want to stay with the person they love.

Obviously romantic love is not the only kind that can motivate someone, nor the only kind that can be fulfilling, nor dose it have to be the main kind of love in someones life. I agrees actually that platonic and familial love should be focused on more and respected more as it can be just as important as romantic. Just as, not more. If you're fine with the love someone feels for their sister or child bringing their motivation then anything they do that is motivated by love they feel for someone romantically should be just as valid. Romance dose not make something less deserving of respect, it dose not diminish it or make it simpler and it dose not take away from the message. A focus on the love of friends and family dose not take away from romantic love, people can love multiple people in different ways in equal amounts.

You're not better or smarter or understand the text's deeper meaning more because you want a traumatised young girl to end up alone and not with the person she loves because you don't care about the romance. Good for you you don't have too. No one has to care about shipping or relationships or romantic love, but it doesn't make you better than anyone that dose. The idea that romance has no value other than silly fan service and a distraction from the big important main plot is outdated, boring, over done, and quite frankly misogynistic in its conception and undertones. You don't like romance? Good for you!! You don't have to. You don't care about the relationships in a pieces of media?? Amazing!!!! No one is telling you to. You think platonic and familial should be focused on more and held to equal importance as romantic??? Oh my fucking god I agree with you what about that. But there is this weird superiority complex around SOME okay SOME people who find no interest in romance and it's fucking stupid.

Love holds value, it's a perfectly good and compelling and realistic motivation, romance can play an important role in plot and story and character, it can be an amazing way to explore philosophy and relationships and basic human feelings and experiences. There is so so much romantic love can add to a story, it's not a necessity no, just like romantic love is not a necessary part of some peoples lives, some stories don't need it. But some do. Romance can and dose hold value, and recognising, caring about, and analysing that has never and will never take away from any other part of a story.

I’m intrigued to see if Colin’s reaction to Lady Whistledown changes once he realizes it’s the love of his life who has been behind all of it.

Right now, Colin is imagining LWD to be someone nefarious who thrives on the misfortunes of others. He thinks she’s this mean old lady spreading vitriol. And he’s suddenly on the “all gossip is bad” train (his comments to Will and Alice at Stowell House) when we all know he previously loved to exchange a barb or two with Pen in the corner.

Is Colin only upset because he has been on the wrong end of Lady Whistledown’s pen?

The audience has the benefit of knowing Pen’s intentions have been mostly honorable, if not totally responsible. She ruined Marina for Colin’s sake; she burned Eloise because she was in hot water with Queen Charlotte.

I wonder if seeing Lady Whistledown through Penelope’s eyes will shift Colin’s viewpoint, or is he just going to be furious and hurt and disappointed?

It begs the question: how harmful is gossip? And does it depend on who is spreading it? Does Penelope’s lowly position in society, general maltreatment, and familial abuse justify her actions? For me the answer is yes. And the fact that Eloise hasn’t revealed the truth tells me that on some level, Eloise also feels Pen is justified.

Of course Colin and Pen will get to a place of understanding because HEA, but I want to see the journey to getting there be a good one that is true to both Penelope and Colin’s character. Neither one of them needs to be perfect, but I do think they need to be on a level moral playing field.

CONCLUSIONS!!

sdlkjf ya'll i really wanted this to harder but idk i didnt feel the depth or sensibility this called for was there tbh. but it was a blast!!! but … it missed a bit of that x factor thing. like some kind of universality to the romance w/ the rogue. i feel he was too sketched-in.... i was also a bit disappointed that ruby's friend was not her friend bc it meant her whole thing this ep of connecting to that woman was for nothing (and up until that point it was feeling very Important specially after the marti thing) (and speaking of, the chuldur's were kinda very sketched-in / surface-level as villains as well) … yeah. idk. kinda disappointing ngl (diodati > this i think). pretty fucking gay tho so that was nice.

Cujo, the St. Bernard, is a good boy until one day he isn't. He gets bitten by a rabid bat while exploring a hole and not only becomes rabid himself but seems to inhabit some of the town's evil presence last behind by serial killer Frank Dodd. Sound confusing? Not in the hands of King.

Several happenstances involving Cujo's owners, the Cambers, and the Trenton family lead to Donna Trenton and her son, Tad trapped in a car at the Cambers house with nobody home and a rabid Cujo attacking the car any chance he gets. This showdown is where we get most of the book's tension.

Where in Maine are we? This is the first book to have it's main setting in fictional Castle Rock.

Where in the King timeline are we? This is book #13, novel #10

Connection to previous King works: Frank Dodd was introduced and killed in The Dead Zone

Connection to The Dark Tower: Both the book and character are referenced in the meta storyline where King is a character. Pharmacy in Bridgeton mentioned in both stories

Good Guy #1: A lot of characters try their best, but the one that fails least often is Vic Trenton. Besides his wife and son, who are trapped in a car, Vic is the character we are set up to root for the most. Due to infidelity, Donna falls down the list below the guys in her life.

Good Guy #2: Poor Tad just wants to keep the monsters away. He is convinced there's one living in his closet, then he gets up close and personal with a real one.

Bad Guy #1: Cujo. Through no fault of his own, the titular pooch is definitely the scariest character and is ruthless when it comes to going on the attack.

Bad Guy #2: Steve Kemp bedded down Donna Trenton and tried to force himself on her when she broke it off. He also came back to the house later and defiled it...in many ways.

Freakout Factor: Every scene when Cujo attacked a human was explicitly explained and made me cringe ever time.

That ending though: This story was set up to have one of the most conventional endings of a King book and that is what happens for the most part. You know everything is dovetailing to a final showdown between human and beast and that people are closing in on finding the pair to save them.

Overall Thoughts: I had heard this one got monotonous and stayed with the psyche of those trapped in the car too much. I didn't find that at all. I thought the way King set everything to happen just perfectly for them to be trapped with nobody around for miles was pretty on point and there was only one small part where I thought he dwelled on Donna's inner thoughts for a little too long.

The truth is that the audience is craving for an interclass relationship

If this is about the show then, is boss babe Genevive Delacroix x Benedict Bridgerton also chopped liver?

Or do they simply want an interclass relationship for Eloise specifically because she's "not like other girls" and a "rebel with a cause"

I think I love Benophie so much because in their interclass relationship, doesn't carry social climbing connotations. There is never a hint from Sophie that the commoner men she knows are somehow better than the noble men she knows. (They are all equally trash. As is Benedict until he reforms. ) And she's initially attracted to Benedict because he treated her nicely in a ball.

And while Benedict does imply that the society girls he knows are not as interesting as Sophie. It's never stated that he thinks commoner girls are better than other girls just because they work for a living and do things the ladies of his circle don't do.

No, he just thinks Sophie is better than all of them because she's Sophie. And that's valid.

Contrary to the show where there is a clear disdain on both sides of the equation about social class. The working class seems to think they are morally better than the nobles because they work for a living and the nobles seem to think they are socially better than the working class because they don't work for a living.

If they want to deliver an interclass relationship then it should be well written. Else it just feels flat and tone deaf.

So far what I've seen of interclass interactions in Bridgerton Isn't my cup of tea dear readers. But I understand why the audience would want that.

On Bridgerton season 2 & future speculation, my random ramblings ahoy:

- How is the casting director for this show *so on point*? I thought Kate & Edwina were perfect; believable both as sisters and different types reflective of their book dichotomy, and also every other scene all I could say was "omg she looks so gorgeous, SO pretty, her hair! Her dress!!" In awe.

- the FLOWERS, the DRESSES, this adaptation is just so gorgeously lovely to look at. I'd happily just watch wisteria grow outside that house

- an instrumental version of Kacey Musgraves ("I'm all right with a slow burrrrrrrnnnnn") would musically summarize my s2 Kate x Anthony feelings

- I had read all the Bridgerton books years before the adaptations, most of them twice, and then reread them all before season 1. Kate x Anthony are some of my favorites (Colin x Penelope are my book series favorites, but certain Kate x Anthony moments contend with them; enemies to lovers is after all my jam), so yes I am coming at this with Book Opinions... but I actually didn't mind the changes? I expected them, for one

- Show!Anthony is so much dumber than Book!Anthony, and I love him so. Was I annoyed in season 1 when he unbelievably tried marrying Daphne to the odious Nigel Berbrooke? Oh yes. But I'm used to it now and his well-meaning terrible decisions were all both comical and in character here.

- I *knew* the show was going to play up the Edwina & Anthony match into near love triangle levels, so the ridiculousness of letting it get altar-close did not faze me because they did it *well*. The angst was fun. Give me clips sent to Satisfied now, please ("I know my sister like I know my own miiiiiind, you will never find anyone as trusting or as kiiiiiind") because the Angelica and Eliza energy was constant and imho very intentional.

- some of my friends in my group texts seem to find Kate too harsh or both her & Anthony too annoyingly in denial and I can see where they're coming from but it worked for me.

Possibly I just find 'oldest sibling who tries to do everything for their family even though that is not always appreciated and makes life decisions influenced by the memory of a beloved father' too relatable??

- I thought the back-and-forth between them was sharp writing especially right before they finally hook up.

- also not sure I've ever seen as sexy a Consent Is Sexy scene as Bridgerton delivered this time ("I will stop."/"Do NOT stop" - give me one of those fancy fans to flutter at myself please) - intentional lil redemption arc for the show after the s1 storyline it adapted, methinks

- as much as I enjoy the "have to marry due to a compromising situation because of bee" plotline of the book, coming right off s1 I get that they didn't want to mirror the marriage plotline and am totally fine with it. The orangery scene with the Featheringtons was a nice nod to it- lots of nice nods where they changed things, I thought

- some book scenes I did miss though - Kate hiding under Anthony's desk while he rendezvouses with his ex the opera singer; I thought for sure we'd see Siena for that and while I get why they changed it (book Anthony is far more the capital R Rake & also a portion of the audience already disliked him from last season, scenes like that would not have helped!)... it could have been adapted still, and added true closure on the Siena feelings on Anthony's part before moving on with Kate. Maybe they couldn't get her? But in usual fashion that's one of my 'well if I was writing this' moments.

- Colin dropping the "me? Courting Penelope? Lol no" among friends *worked*, but yeah that has nothing on the cinematic power of him saying it in frustration to his brothers, hearing Penelope's "oh!", and all of them turning around in awkward horror & Benedict's kind moment with her walking her back to the house. I get why they wanted to cram it in, but no small loss, that one, AND if they needed it this season that would have been an excellent opportunity for Benedict setup.

- speaking of Benedict... I see you, articles teasing that they may change the book order of siblings' stories, and I am dubious. I'm very convinced we're still getting Benedict next but that they're starting to prep us now for changing orders.

I give it maybe 10% odds Colin/Penelope is the next main storyline and I would feel safe placing a wager against it were there relevant betting books. I don't think it would be a savvy showrunning move!

Penelope is the main connective central character between seasons right now & however much they change her and Colin's story, Whistledown is still so much a part of it, and there's such a cinematic moment in there I refuse to believe they'll skip adapting it, I am dubious they will play that card any sooner than they have to.

In fact I think the reverse. You want to keep people watching season over season as you change the main characters? You want to keep Whistledown fully in play?

Drag. That. Shit. Out. They're only renewed through s4 right now but Shonda Rhimes is still talking about ideally, they want 8(+, depending on what extent they franchise this, don't overfranchise this) and I very much would like all 8 seasons thanks. So assuming you want 8 seasons, and you have one steady subplot with two already-cast characters the audience is invested in... why would you shoot that shot early? Normally they're book 4 but I'm actually thinking they may put them in slot 5 or 6 presuming conversations with Netflix indicate they're likely to be renewed and don't have to close the story out.

Honestly, now that I know they're presumably going out of order, if I was doing it, I'd consider putting them in s6. But who then do you put first??

- Francesca has gotten zero development. Comically so, the Sister Not Appearing in This Story. Given her story spans years, if they truly expect to adapt her book than we NEED more Francesca in s3 and we need some Scotsmen to accordingly show up. Which, upping her role really only works well with one existing plotline... Benedict's.

- they are totally setting up Eloise's book plotline more than I expected! I thought if they were going to get more creative, Eloise or Benedict was the one they'd do it with, but I think the book fandom's intensity + the huge worldwide audience means they're going to be more faithful than I expected. Which uh yeah also means "personally I thought Benedict was the one I'd choose to make LGBT if I was adapting this series but I increasingly don't think they're actually going to do it... maybe when they get to Hyacinth or Gregory...?"😬

- I really hope they don't recast Hyacinth & Gregory & continue to just let them grow up; I think they're moving in that direction

- sooner or later there's got to be a time jump BUT the way they left things with Penelope and Eloise makes me hope they don't just jump a few years for s3! I don't want them to be estranged that long! Fix that!

- but with the emphasis on Colin still only being 21 and still a lot of growing up to do, and Eloise only beginning to be seen as a wallflower & for her & Penelope to stare down spinster status... I think it's important to get them to 28, or for my sanity's sake at least 26, which means we will need a time jump. Based on casting alone though I've always expected this is their master plan. (As much as I appreciate the rep for early-thirties women still being able to play teenagers on TV... let them be real adults for their own seasons)

- which leaves us with Benedict's season. Francesca needs set up; we can't jump to her AND her book spans years, so some events should take place pre time jump & some post. Eloise & Penelope's seasons need time jumps they seem to be prepping us for. AND it looks like they're going to use the Cowpers, who were played up this season, to fill a role in Benedict's plot so while he's so loveable I wouldn't mind another year of setup... thank you, next.

- literally the only other option is Francesca next, if you want to cast some REALLY hot Scot (or two) opposite her but when you want to maintain audience investment, & for both plot & character & renewal reasons, presumably want to hang onto the Colin/Penelope card as long as possible, going with a character the audience already knows and cares about is key.

- but say you're going to do Benedict next and again, hang onto that Colin/Penelope card. I'm thinking the logical #4 season is, in fact, then Francesca (again! If they can get renewal!). You have to do Colin/Penelope if you're ending with s4 but... Netflix's cancellation-happy side aside, does anyone really expect that? Based on every girl I know binging Bridgerton this weekend... doubtful. Set up Francesca next season to take lead in #4, and you have 2 seasons more of fan-favorite characters Eloise, Colin, and Penelope getting plots, development...and time.

- Eloise's plotline is very impacted by Colin/Penelope butttt you could reverse it, given Penelope her "last left on the shelf" feeling. Should they? Would they? Idk. But you could.

- if you wanted to save Colin-Penelope as long as possible, Hyacinth's actress is growing up fast enough (and would debut at 18, actress is 15 now playing about 11 and we're expecting at least some time jump) they *could* even jam that in first. Again, should they, would they, less likely, but if they're throwing that door open... maybe.

- but yeah my imaginary money remains on Benedict next & I do think we're getting Sophie, straight-up. I may be proved wrong! But that's my bet.

- finally please PLEASe, show, keep Simone Ashley around for s2. Aside from being a great way to give Violet Bridgerton a storyline with some heft - navigating transitioning the role of viscountness!- the lack of a cameo from Simon DID feel weird. If he couldn't be at pall-mall, at least Anthony's wedding when they were established as such friends. That's a one-day filming fix. Returns don't need to steal the spotlight! But Kate is far more central to later books than Simon & also, who's going to object to more Simone Ashley? #KeepKate2023 (though uh Netflix if you want to surprise me & give me season 3 at Christmas, that'd be grand thanks).

- oh finally! Nicola Coughlan getting to use her Irish accent! A surprise & a delight; I'm ready for Derry Girls s3 now
