reverse unpopular wheel of time opinion? :3c

They should have given the Wheel of Time ending to ME so that I could have canonized trans channelers (and people) in Wheel of Time!

This one unpopular but good opinion is tough, at least here on Tumblr. I feel like people actually understood what the fuck the point of the books was in fandom here instead of like... reddit.

But hot take under the cut CW for some discussion of racism and nationalism

Anyways, I think it's an unpopular opinion here is that the Seanchan were a really incredible depiction of what living in a horrifically oppressive state is, psychologically and culturally. Fantasy settings typically display nationalism and warrior cultures as good (thinking like a good "Long live the King" in almost every fantasy novel published before 1990. At least the dominant fantasy settings and novels) so for Robert Jordan to step away from that was already interesting. Most fantasy novels of the time worked from the narrative perspective that monarchies were good, and that a return to monarchy, patriarchy, and martial power was an ultimate good for society. (I know a lot of them weren't intentionally like that. And also more importantly that there was a lot of work going on in the fantasy realm that was explicitly targeting weird reactionary views in fantasy literature)

Robert Jordan challenged some of that stuff in book one, the whitecloaks obviously being modeled after the KKK. But by book 2 were shown the Cairhienin(sp?) and the Seanchan. The Seanchan drew some heavy cultural inspiration from the US, and were also explicitly depicted as the villains. We first see them through the eyes of an enslaved person (and one we already care deeply about: Egwene), setting the understanding for how evil the empire is. Then slowly over the rest of the series built up human perspectives of people who live in and enforce that system. First Egeanin begins to add the work of complexity and nuance to the Seanchan, while Egeanin is simultaneously unlearning some of the prejudice her empire is built upon.

Then of course, Mat becomes the angle in to see myriad different perspectives of seanchan people. Mat will see various people who benefit from Seanchan rule (Tylin & Beslan obvs, but also lower class people for whom the streets of Ebou Dar are significantly less dangerous). While at the same time Mat will also witness various people who suffer under the oppressive Seanchan state, particularly the various enslaved peoples with the damane and da’covale, and the Sea Folk. Mat also witnesses the countless Seanchan people who are coming back to the Westlands to settle them, bringing their own livestock and flora.

Through Mat we’re given into a window people who truly believe in the institution that is the Seanchan empire. We’re also given many perspectives on how the Seanchan are violent slaving and settler state. Also the Seanchan military is explicitly modeled after the American military, while the Westland kingdoms have their own military structures and doctrines. So the Seanchan are built up as a highly regimented, slave-holding, military imperial and settler power (with some huge touchstones to American culture) and then portrayed as complex bad guys.

I often felt that Jordan didn’t go far enough with those parallels that he built. I think also that we needed a POV from the perspective of a damane or da’covale (I think Alivia was the best candidate for this) who hated the empire. While certainly we had Egwene’s perspective (and the many friends around her who were horrified by what the Seanchan did to her), someone who could have acted as a local perspective that verified the evil of the system is really important for bringing that point home. Especially because we’ve gotten so much Seanchan propaganda making the empire’s case for them for however many books.

If the novels had closed with a strong perspective on the evils of the Seanchan empire, to act as a bookend to that nuanced exploration of their society throughout the whole series, that would have made the point most effectively I think. Then again Jordan passed and Sanderson brought his own… interesting perspective to Seanchan culture. So we’ll never know.

Anyways my hot take is a southern american gentleman type of person who was also a vietnam vet wrote a series about nationalism, toxic masculinity, and military cultures being bad, and exploring the many ways that those three bad things support and prop each other up. And in this series the America analogue were explicitly bad guys (just not as bad as the ontologically evil Dark One and friends). I also think that the Seanchan could have been done better to hit those goals, but I admire what the series did accomplish.

She is likely third class, traveling to New York from Southampton with Antonio and his family. The trip was likely to visit Laura's family for a big event. From New York, they were to make their way back home to Chicago.

Belle (Beauty and the Beast) Lamoreaux

She is traveling third class with her father. They did not initially get tickets for the Titanic, but because of the coal strike, they got bumped from their original ship.

They board the Titanic at Cherbourg, France. Maurice likely scraped and scrounged to purchase boarding passes by selling his lastest inventions. He always dreamed of starting a NEW and happier life with Belle. One, he thought they could discover in America.

Missy Cooper:

She is traveling with the entire Cooper family in second class. Her family does NOT have the means to afford their accommodations. The University of Heidelberg, where Sheldon is set to study, provided the passage to and from as an effort to entice Sheldon to attend. They also gifted the Coopers a tour of Germany and France. Like Belle and Maurice, they likely board in Cherbourg, France.

Elizabeth Swann

As the Governor's daughter, has the privilege of sailing first class. Their suite is likely on B deck. They likely travel with a good bit of luggage and help. That may include William Turner, for extra spicey drama. Elizabeth is OBSESSED with the ocean and is content to sit on the upper decks in her heavy coat, so that she can watch the horizon.

Susan Pevensie (okay but fudging the timelines a little bit given her father fought in WWII and her mother was a War Correspondent.) Her mother, growing more listless with amplifying air assaults, decides it is time to send the children to SAFER territory. Petitioning the professor, she secures Second Class tickets for Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy. Having been booked for another ship, they too find themselves booked upon the Titanic in one cabin, midship on F deck. They end up boarding in Southampton, England.

(In the ugliest of ugly AUS-- they are trapped below deck as the ship begins to sink. Susan is the only one pulled from the water. Instead of having the train wreck at the end of the Last Battle. Susan ends up living out the rest of her days with survivors' guilt.)

fight for the guessing game

I almost went with a Miyagi-verse wip and then I thought 'where's the fun in that' and challenged myself to find fight somewhere else - and I did!

They’d just come back from their latest mission – Time Pirates causing chaos in 12th Century England, and Nubia had gone into single combat with their leader and wiped the fucking floor with him and...well, Brianna had been very impressed indeed and that had started this whole thought process because she was just...amazing. She was honestly tempted to ask her to train her because...to be able to fight like that…

This is from my Brianna Thawne wip in which despite her best efforts (and her denials to everyone else) she does have hero worship for some members of the Legends team (though in this case there's also the fact that she's very bi because one thing Brianna does not need is fighting lessons)

also! i think ocd five in general is a very neat concept, there’s some headcanons i have for him that i didn’t even realize are ocd symptoms until now. since ocd and anxiety are linked, do you think you’ll touch on that topic as well? i’d also love to just heard your thoughts on how it’d affect his brain :)

I read both questions before responding so I kind of already touched on this in this post but I will go into it in more detail here

I definitely think that Five has anxiety and I think that both his OCD and anxiety are intertwined but there are also ways that his anxiety manifests outside of OCD and that’s general day to day life stuff. I think Five would find a lot of anxiety around social interaction. I think Five would struggle with interacting with his siblings. He got better in the third season but it sort of fell apart at the end when they all walked away. There’s quite a significant wedge between Five and his siblings and I think he’d have a lot of anxiety around trying to make himself fit into family

During season three his relationship with people such as Klaus improves. He has a deep discussion with Viktor and he definitely becomes a lot more friendly with Lila. They have the wedding and they all have fun together and they’re probably at a point where Five feels like he is fitting in with gang a little better. He does his whole wedding speech which he remembers being horrible but the rest of them talk about him being a big old softy and they joke about it and Lila even tried to hug him but at the end of season three it all sort of falls apart. There’s a lot of tension between Allison and Five specifically. Luther grabs ahold of Five and blames him for Sloane disappearing and everyone except from Viktor walks away from him. That isn’t necessarily because of Five specifically but it could be something that he internalises as being his fault. Luther immediately blames him for something and then they all walk away. He’s supposed to be the time travel expert and everything has gotten all fucked up again and I would be surprised if he ended up blaming himself for that

In this au Five ends up going to live with Lila and Diego but he has a lot of anxiety around trying to make sure that he slots into the family well enough. Lila and Diego are the ones that insist that Five stays because it’s clear that he’s not doing very fell by himself. He’s drinking; he’s sleeping rough; he hasn’t changed clothes in like a month. He was clearly having a shit time so they decide to keep him around but despite the fact that they want him to stay he still feels like the part that doesn’t fit. He still waits to be rejected or blamed for things that aren’t his fault. He has anxiety around making sure that he comes across as someone that his siblings and Lila will like and keeping it that way. He has a lot of anxiety around it all suddenly falling apart like things have before

When he finds out that Lila’s pregnant it brings out a whole other brand of anxiety for him. He’s worried that something might happen to her. He’s worried Diego might get mad at him if something happens to her. He’s worried about being a good uncle. He’s worried about this very small and very delicate family member entering his life. What if he hurts the baby? What if he makes a mistake and Diego and Lila throw him out? What if Lila or the baby die and Diego becomes estranged the way that Allison has?

He’s constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop. He’s used to things going wrong and living the worst case scenario. He doesn’t know any other way of living so he’s not used to things being so normal and it makes him really anxious to lose it. He hasn’t got all his siblings but he has a few of them and they’re happy and accepting of him and he really really cannot bare the thought of losing that little bit of peace and love he’s managed to accumulate. It’s terribly anxiety inducing and terribly isolating for him but he learns to live. And with help and support from Lila specifically he learns to get better

this one was genuinely really hard for me. I was going to say the new art style. i did like that the DMG for 5e had a better set of rules, advice, and tools for worldbuilding than 3rd or 4th edition had. That was a genuine step in the right direction for dnd design
