Best Man
Schitt's Creek, Patrick/David, 670 words
Summary: David interrupts Patrick and Stevie at the cafe to ask her to be his best man. Unfortunately, Patrick had the same goal.
tw: none
Read it on ao3!
-------
“So, what’s the occasion?” Stevie asked as she and Patrick unfolded their menus.
“Oh not a lot. Just wanted to talk about some wedding things.”
“Huh. Just you, no David?”
“Oh yeah, he’s just, uh, looking after the store for a bit this afternoon.”
Stevie glanced up as someone entered the café. “You sure about that?”
“Stevie, hi!”
“Hey,” she said as David approached the booth.
“Hi,” he greeted Patrick, placing a kiss on the side of his head.
“Hey, what’re you doing here?”
“I was just grabbing some lunch before going back to the store. What’re you doing here?”
“Having lunch with Stevie?”
“Mm. Mind if I interrupt for a sec?”
A smile darted across Patrick’s lips. “I think you already have.”
“Great,” he said, looking at Stevie. “I just had a question.”
“If it’s about the towels, I’m sorry. We’ve been trying to get Roland to do something about the washer, but, it’s Roland, so…”
“No, it’s not about that, though now that you mention it, they have been smelling a bit off. No, I was just wondering…” David fiddled with the ring on his finger. “… if you would be my best man?”
Stevie stared at him for a moment.
“Er, best… woman?” David stammered. “Best person. For the wedding? With us? Not with us, between us, but you’d be there, and I’m just gonna…” He pressed his lips together.
“I…” Stevie glanced between him and Patrick, a smile growing on her face. “I would be hon—“
“Hold on!” Patrick interrupted, pulling away from David slightly. “I was going to ask you to be my best, er, person.” He turned to David. “You can’t just steal her!”
“You were?”
“‘Steal’? If I recall, I asked first, so technically if you asked now, you would be the one stealing.”
“Well at least I put some thought into asking!”
“You did?”
“Yeah, why do you think I asked if you wanted to grab lunch?”
Stevie shrugged. “I figured you wanted to talk about guest accommodations or something.”
“Okay but planning to do something first doesn’t count, doing it does. I was planning on proposing at some point, but you did it first, so mine doesn’t count.”
Patrick blinked. “You what?”
David gaped for a moment. “I mean… not really.”
Patrick’s stare turned into a disbelieving smile. “Yes really, that’s how you had the ring so quickly! I knew two days was way too fast.”
“Hold on,” Stevie interrupted. “So you both want me to be your best man?”
The two glanced at each other, then back at Stevie. “Apparently,” Patrick said, while David shrugged with an “I mean, yeah…”
A moment passed, before Stevie burst out laughing. “I’m sorry,” she said, catching her breath. “You guys really didn’t talk this through, did you?”
“We talked about if we knew who we were going to ask!” Patrick said, glancing at David. “We just didn’t talk about… who exactly we were going to ask.”
“Yeah, because I didn’t think you were going to try to steal my best friend and ask her to be your best man!”
“I did not steal—!”
“Okay!”
They looked at her. “I’m sorry?” David said.
“Okay, yes, I will be your best… person.”
“Whose, his or mine?” Patrick asked. “Because I offered to buy lunch, so —“
“Both! I dunno, we’ll figure it out. It’s not like you two have anyone else you could ask anyway,” she said with a smile. “Also you’re still buying me lunch.”
“I’ll have you know I had a very long list of potential people to ask. You just happened to be the first one I ran into.”
“David…”
“M’kay. There are probably some teenage hooligans robbing the store at this point, so I should probably be getting back…”
“Bye, David,” Stevie said, unsuccessfully suppressing a smile.
“Don’t forget about lunch!” Patrick said as David turned to leave.
“I actually already ate; that was just an excuse to come in here. But thank you.”
“Of course it was.”
As David left, Stevie turned back to her menu. “So, lunch?”

17 + dealers choice
of flooded basements, midnight worries, and soft cookies
david/patrick │g │400-ish
“Ok, well… fuck.” At the sound of the words, David immediately snaps his head to look at Patrick. “What?”
“Nothing, I just - I don’t think I’ve ever heard you cuss,” David explains. “You know outside of the bedroom, it tends to be more of my realm, it doesn’t really go with…” he keeps a flat hand in the air as he gestures to Patrick’s person. “…all of it.”
“You know what, David? Maybe there is a time and a place to make fun of me for using a bad word, and maybe now is not that time?”
David feels his eyebrows climb up his forehead, both of his hands now in the air.
“Okay, fine,” he gives in. “…so how do we fix it?”
“I don’t know, David,” Patrick sighs, still a cut to his tone.
In theory, it had been a great idea - a fantastic idea, in fact. Fix up the basement of the Apothecary so that they can expand their business, and make it into a coffee shop/café. David has always found basements to be extremely cozy - when correctly decorated, of course. A counter, some soft lighting, some tables and sofas and chairs - it would be the new place to be. And it wouldn’t cause any friction with Twyla’s, because David and Patrick wouldn’t actually be selling any food. Just coffees, teas, and maybe the occasional soft cookie.
In reality, however - they’re currently standing in a half flooded, dark basement, listening to the devastatingly mocking sound of one of the pipes spitting out more water by the second.
“I’m gonna call Ronnie,” Patrick sighs, turning on his heel and walking back up the stairs. David moves out of the way, following Patrick with his eyes until he’s out of sight. Then he looks back at the pipe across the floor.
“Shut up.”
~~~
“It’s gonna be fine,” Patrick mumbles later that night. David turns his head, from where he’s laying on his back, fingers thrumming against his sternum. Patrick is still turned away from him.
“How did you know I’m even awake? You’re not looking at me,” David says, an accusatory hint to his tone.
“Husband’s intuition,” Patrick mumbles, before proceeding to flip himself over onto his other side, scooting closer to David until he can place his hand over his.
“I just - maybe it was a mistake. The apothecary is going so well -“
“Which is exactly why it is a good idea, David,” Patrick says, with a squeeze to his hand. “It’s gonna be fine - it’s gonna take a little bit longer, and it’s gonna be a little bit more expensive, but we can handle it. Ronnie says it’s not even difficult to fix.”
“I just-“
“David,” Patrick silences him. Because Patrick knows - he knows David better than David does. David doesn’t need to tell him all of the worries inside of his head - doesn’t need to tell him how he’s terrified of failing, because he feels like that’s all he ever did until Patrick and the store came into his life. Doesn’t need to tell him that his life feels perfect right now and that he sometimes, silently, secretly waits for the other shoe to drop. Doesn’t need to tell him that he still has voices inside of his head telling him that he’s not good enough, and that he never will be. He doesn’t need to tell Patrick any of that - because Patrick knows. “David,” he says again. This time with a hand in David’s hair - something he’s only allowed to do in the middle of the night, when there’s no product in it, no style for Patrick’s fingers to destroy. Carefully, he combs it back against the pillow, his eyes wandering over David’s face, taking in as much of the features as the moonlight allows him to. “It’s gonna be fine,” he promises, before pressing a chaste, warm kiss to his lips. “I promise,” he whispers.
~~~
Patrick is right - as is often the case.
Because three weeks later, they’re standing in a softly lit basement, not a leaking pipe in sight - and it looks even better than David had pictured. He has decided to keep the cement floor and the concrete brick walls mostly as they were, although it’s all painted white. The cold, rough floors and walls go well with the fluffy curtains that framed the small, rectangular windows that sit high up towards the ceiling. The fluffy rugs, big sofas, and large paintings also do a good job of making the space feel warm and inviting.
As does the large sign on the wall behind the counter. It matches the one above the front door, except this one is backlit with a soft, yellow light. The writing is bold, but simple. Rose Brewery.
“You ready for me to go up and let everybody in?” Patrick asks, with a squeeze to David’s shoulder. David takes a breath, and lets his eyes move over the room one last time, before finally, he nods.
“Yeah. Ready.”

schitt’s creek fic masterlist
(sorted by newest to oldest - will be updated as i upload)
(updated 4/6/22)
it would’ve been fun (if you would’ve been the one) - G (897 words)
Stevie and David weren't right for each other. They were better as friends. Stevie wasn't the kind of person who wanted a romantic relationship. David belonged with Patrick.
All of those things were true, but sometimes Stevie couldn't help but think of the what ifs.
even on your weakest days (you get a little bit stronger) - T (1,310 words)
Theoretically, Patrick knew about David’s bad days. The days when he couldn’t get out of bed, regardless of whether anything had happened or not. The days where he just felt hopeless, even when he logically knew that things were going well.
But he had never seen them.
or the one where patrick is determined to love david through all the bad days
i love you and i like you - G (2,179 words)
David shouldn’t have fit into Patrick’s life but Patrick was pretty sure that David was the best friend he had ever had.
or the one where patrick assumes like and love go hand in hand but learns that, to david, they don't
out here it’s like i’m someone else - T (5,030 words)
It's been three years since Patrick has been back to his hometown and with a high school reunion coming up, Patrick has the perfect reason to go back. He'll see some old friends and family that he'd neglected since he left. But, more importantly, he'll get to show off David and show everyone how much he's changed for the better.
Unfortunately for Patrick, not everyone has changed since high school.
(let me tell you a secret) about a father’s love - G (1,506 words)
Johnny Rose loves his children, he always has. But he was just too busy, too preoccupied, to be the father they needed. So he delegated the task of raising them to nannies and assistances, thinking that one day he would have time to step up and be a real dad.
But one day kept getting pushed back and pushed back and pushed back until one day David and Alexis were grown and they didn't need a dad. And then they lost their money and he was able to get to know who his children had become without his help. But he could never shake the feeling that he had failed them somehow.
One late night conversation with Clint brewer makes Johnny realize he might not be the only father who carries guilt.
if i could write a letter to me - G (779 words)
Patrick loves the life that he has, even if it wasn’t the life he expected for himself. Or, maybe, that makes it all the better.
Sometimes, though, he wished he could have known his future when he was seventeen.
dust off your highest hopes - T (15,608 words)
When David Rose ran away from New York, it felt like the world was ending. When his brand new car broke down in rural Ontario, it felt like the universe was out to get him. When he had to stay in a run down motel in a town called Schitt's Creek, he was certain that he was being punished for some unforeseen wrong.
But when David Rose met Patrick Brewer, everything changed.
(i could drink) a case of you - T (1,599 words)
After his talk with Mr. Rose, Patrick suspects there was more his father-in-law wanted to say. He has the chance to ask him when they have to drive to pick up a drunk David and Moira.
forehead kisses, tuberculosis, and chicken soup - T (1743 words)
David is sick. David hates being sick. And Patrick is there trying to make him feel better. But it's all Patrick's fault that David is sick in the first place.
don’t make me fall in love (if he won’t be there) - T (1114 words)
Christmas was a lonely time for David Rose. The gifts were lavish, the parties were grand, the alcohol and drugs were plentiful, and company was always around. But it was all empty.
Because in the secret corner of his heart, David wanted. He wanted so much more than he knew he was ever going to get.
And then he met Patrick Brewer.
the christmas surprise - T (11216 words)
Patrick says that he can’t come home for the holidays because he’s busy with the store. So Marcy and Clint take it upon themselves to make a surprise visit to Schitt’s Creek. Except Patrick’s reason for staying was a lie and now he has about a week to figure out how to come out to them on his own terms before they leave.
merry christmas, patrick brewer - T (3343 words)
Patrick's new life is so different than his old one that it's easy, sometimes, to forget everything he left behind. But now it's Christmas and he finds himself longing for parts of his old life.
At least he has David.
B-L-I-P-P-I - G (1155 words)
Patrick babysits Roland Jr and David discovers what a Blippi is
the shape of your name - T (2197 words) collab witb @stereopticons
The first time Patrick Brewer said David Rose’s name something warm settled itself in his chest and he wanted to hold onto that feeling. So he kept saying David’s name.
posion on your lips - G (1493 words) cowritten with @alienajackson
David will eat anything. Even things that could kill him.
Or: the one where Patrick suffers so much because of his husband's stomach.
i’m not the one (but i wish i was) - T (2141 words)
David knows that he's an acquired taste that most people don't have. And that is especially true for snippy business majors who wear straight leg, midrange demin and talk in sports metaphors. No, David Rose would never be someone Patrick Brewer would want.
Even if David can't stop thinking about him.
braced myself for the goodbye (cause it’s all i’ve ever known) - T (1918 words)
The thing about David Rose is that he’s used to getting left behind.
Everyone always leaves David. He’s too loud. He’s too dramatic. He’s too much.
So when Patrick enters David’s life, he’s just waiting for him to leave. But David doesn’t know what to make of the fact that Patrick wants to stay.
pat vs patrick - T (3859 words)
Before Patrick Brewer was Patrick, he was just…Pat. Pat Brewer had a life that most people envy — good friends, a comfortable job, and a woman who loved him. But Pat wasn’t happy so he became Patrick and found a reason to live in a small town hours away from everything he’s ever known.
But now Patrick is back in the town that built Pat and he doesn’t know if there’s enough room inside of him for both of them.
more in common than you’d think - G (1083 words)
there must be people out there who say yes to getting married because they can’t say no and then what happens? and then they’re stuck for the rest of their life with the same wrong sweet person right?
or: the one where patrick and alexis have one very specific thing in common
don’t mess with alexis rose’s brothers - G (1394 words)
Alexis Rose had spent most of her life being too self absorbed to see how desperate her brother was for love. But now she had two brothers taking up space in her heart.
And God help anyone who tried to hurt them.
touch me, love me, can’t get enough - T (1372 words)
Life is lonely when you’re David Rose. So he numbs the pain with alcohol, with drugs, with the touch of a stranger whose name he won’t remember in the morning. He likes the attention, revels in it, but it’s all empty. No one stays. No one cares.
But when someone does care, when someone wants to stay, David doesn’t know what to do.
right where he left her - G (1317 words)
It didn’t matter what happened in the in between, Rachel was always right where Patrick left her. Because he always came back. It didn’t matter what other girls he dated, Patrick always came back to Rachel, who was always waiting.
Rachel would have never anticipated David Rose.
two pieces from different puzzles - G (2426 words)
Patrick had left. But that was okay because Rachel knew how to bring him back. Redraw the picture, manipulate the puzzle until the pieces fit. They were RachelandPatrick, PatrickandRachel. It was the way it was supposed to be. It was right.
But in a small town with a funny name, Rachel might learn a thing or two about love and puzzle pieces.

For @schittscreekdrabbleblog’s word of the week: Snuggle
Patrick tromps into the cottage, fresh snow sliding off his puffy coat. He removes his knitted cap and runs a hand through his curly, sweaty mess of hair.
“It’s freezing out there,” Patrick says with a shiver as he strips out of his winter attire.
When he's done, he heads straight for David and snuggles into his side. His cold nose nuzzles at David’s neck. David squeals and pushes him away. “Patrick!”
“I’m cold!” Patrick whines while sticking out his lower lip, cheeks red and shining. Damn it, David can’t resist that look.
“Fine, get in here.”
“Love you, David.”
