It's not uncommon for some women to live in active denial of their pregnancy after encounters with aliens. One such case was Gloria, a stay at home wife who had been pestering her husband for children since their wedding. Her desire to have a family grating on her husband's nerves until he proceeded to search forums for anyone who may be able to assist in subduing her desires through alternate means. Unfortunately for Gloria, he found it.
Her husband, Derek, was seen outside a power plant making a transaction with an unknown individual in which he received an underdeveloped alien offspring. Waiting until his wife was asleep, he then proceeded to feed her the offspring. Derek was under the belief that doing so would rewire Gloria into thinking she was pregnant so that she would cease her insistence. Much to his surprise, it did. For the next several weeks, Gloria seemed to have calmed down and taken a much more active role in the community.
While her desires were subdued, her body began changing day by day and becoming far more rotund. Though there were the typical symptoms of pregnancy, the majority of the growth was within her belly. Becoming tightly packed, her midsection was completely spherical and had little to no room. At least that's what people assumed. Gloria had taken to eating larger portion, claiming she needed the energy. When confronted about her growth, she would claim she was gassy or bloated. Simply unable to comprehend the idea that she was pregnant at all, Derek began to regret his decision as he feared for his wife's safety.
By the time Derek had called for ACC agents, it was too late for all intents and purposes. Agents arrived to find Gloria on top of Derek, riding him as they two were interlocked in what appeared to be a long running sexual encounter. It took several agents to pry Gloria off of her husband and she then attempted to breed with the nearest man she could get her hands on. Attempts to subdue her were mixed, finally forced to tranquilize her so she could be contained and examined.
Derek himself was dehydrated and exhausted, revealing that both he and Gloria were almost drawn to each other. Inspection of the house revealed that Gloria's body had given off a concentrated burst of pheromones to induce something akin to mating hypnosis between both of them. Thankfully there was none of said pheromones left lingering in the air and no agents were exposed to it. As Derek was examined, it was discovered the alien offspring had caused this in order to spread. Derek had been impregnated by his wife and had to be contained quickly in case of any rapid growth. His case is ongoing. With Gloria showing no signs of labor, it is believed that the alien in her womb simply spreads through copulation and impregnates any sexual partners the host may have. Further study is required.

A slime is a stealthy breeder, at first. Those who sleep in their territory may not even notice as the slime compresses down beneath their clothing and into the warmest hole they find first. If it's an especially large slime, and there's multiple breeding holes present, the slime may even split into several parts to maximize breeding. The unlucky party would awake already bound by the various slimes tendrils, with slimes already inserting themselves into them.
The host will need maximum arousal to take and lay the eggs, so the slimes engulf most of the hosts body. Slime fills the mouth, providing all the nutrients to undergo the lengthy mating process. It wraps itself airtight around tits and gropes them to induce lactation for later, as well as prepare the host for the eggs. By this point, a potent aphrodisiac has already begun to be absorbed by the host into their skin, causing every touch by the slime to bring them to near climax, and reduce them to an animal trying to grind itself against the slime's tentacles.
Now, the slime inserts itself into whatever hole is at hand, and begins shoving its eggs in. Each one causes the hosts eyes to roll back in their head. It generally takes several hours for every egg to pass through, each one stretching out the host until their mind is completely dulled by pleasure. Once the eggs are laid, the slime typically leaves. At which point anyone who stumbles along the unlucky party would be greeted by a group of writhing hosts who, if they have enough mind to even pick themselves up, have simply begun trying to extract what pleasure they can from eachothers bodies.
The eggs themselves pass just as slowly as they were laid, but without their mouths being plugged the host is likely to scream in pleasure as each egg slides out of them. By the time the last few are beginning to get out, the first of the eggs has long hatched, and the resulting slimelings have crawled their way onto the waiting host's breasts where they extract the nutrients they need. Once every slime has hatched and taken it's fill, the host is generally unable to walk, and has permenant breast growth comparative to late stage pregnancy. The unlucky party will begin to stand after several hours, and will likely head towards the next known slime territory.

"The story of these citizen-pioneers of mutagenesis (the technical term for creating genetic change through the application of chemical, physical, and biological agents) is full of fantastic details, from Muriel Howorth’s propagandising ballet-mime, Isotopia, which involved a cast of Knowledge, Electron, Proton, Neutron, Rat, and Cow, as well as a working geiger counter, to Tennessee-based atomic entrepreneur C.J. Speas irradiating trays of seedlings into his backyard bunker.

Perhaps the most bizarre detail in the interview, however, is the news that these gamma gardens are still in operation, relatively unchanged in design since the 50s, in the grounds of national laboratories today. Their circular form, which, as Johnson notes, bears more than a passing resemblance to the atomic danger symbol, “was simply based upon the need to arrange the plants in concentric circles around the radiation source which stood like a totem in the center of the field.”
It was basically a slug of radioactive material within a pole; when workers needed to enter the field it was lowered below ground into a lead lined chamber. There were a series of fences and alarms to keep people from entering the field when the source was above ground. The amount of radiation received by the plants naturally varied according to how close they were to the pole. So usually a single variety would be arranged as a ‘wedge’ leading away from the pole, so that the effects of a range of radiation levels could be evaluated. Most of the plants close to the pole simply died. A little further away, they would be so genetically altered that they were riddled with tumors and other growth abnormalities. It was generally the rows where the plants ‘looked’ normal, but still had genetic alterations, that were of the most interest, that were ‘just right’ as far as mutation breeding was concerned!
Over at GOOD, Peter Smith recently described a similar layout at the still-active Institute of Radiation Breeding, in Hitachiohmiya, Japan, which has “has a 88.8 Terabecquerel Cobalt-60 source, ringed by a 3,608-foot radius Gamma field (the world’s largest), and a 28-foot high shield dike around the perimeter.”

As it turns out, far from being a fantastic fossil from the future that never was, along with jetpacks and flying cars, atomic gardening is alive and well today. According to a 2007 New York Times story, which quotes Dr. Pierre Lagoda, head of plant breeding and genetics at the International Atomic Energy Agency, radiation breeding is actually experiencing a renaissance, due to the introduction of “new methods that speed up the identification of mutants.”

What’s more, the Times adds, nearly 2,000 gamma radiation-induced mutant crop varieties have been registered around the world, including Calrose 76, a dwarf varietal that accounts for about half the rice grown in California, and the popular Star Ruby and Rio Red grapefruits, whose deep colour is a mutation produced through radiation breeding in the 1970s. Similarly, Johnson tells Pruned that “most of the global production of mint oil,” with an annual market value estimated at $930 million, is extracted from the “wilt-resistant ‘Todd’s Mitcham’ cultivar, a product of thermal neutron irradiation.” She adds that “the exact nature of the genetic changes that cause it to be wilt-resistant remain unknown.”

After Milton made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane in western Florida last week, some residents who evacuated the area are now returning to discover water damage in their homes. And they may soon find something else: mold.
Mold can begin to grow as soon as 24 to 48 hours after moisture exposure. And Florida’s subtropical climate, which remains hot and humid in October, makes it a perfect breeding ground. Even worse, mold will continue to grow until the source of moisture is eliminated.
As climate change ushers in heavier rainfall and more intense storms, mold is likely to become a more common problem. Warmer temperatures add moisture to the atmosphere, which can produce more intense precipitation events. “Mold is absolutely associated with climate change,” says Mary Johnson, a principal research scientist of environmental health at Harvard University. “Those extreme weather patterns, including hurricanes, can allow water to come into a home or any type of indoor space. When it’s damp, the likelihood of mold growing indoors increases.”
Mold growth has previously been documented after major storms that caused flooding and water damage in residential neighborhoods. A few months after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005, researchers with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention inspected 112 homes affected by flooding and found that nearly half had visible mold growth. And Johnson’s research has linked higher temperatures and increased precipitation to more mold spores in outdoor air.
A type of fungi, mold is a natural part of the environment and has been on Earth for millions of years. Outside, it plays an important role by decomposing organic material, such as dead trees and leaves. But indoors, mold can be a health risk, especially to children, people with allergies and asthma, and those with weakened immune systems.
Mold spores—reproductive cells that act like seeds—travel through the air both outdoors and indoors. When people breathe in these spores, they can cause respiratory symptoms, itchy eyes, infections, or skin rashes. Inhaling them can also trigger asthma attacks that can be serious. Not everyone is affected by mold exposure, though.
“Our bodies, for the most part, deal with mold,” says Ronald Saff, an internal medicine doctor, allergist, and immunologist in Tallahassee, Florida. “People are exposed to molds at fairly high concentrations if they go for a walk in the park or in wooded areas.”
For most healthy people, short-term mold exposure isn’t usually a problem. But for individuals with asthma and other chronic lung diseases, or those who are immunocompromised—including transplant and chemotherapy patients—it’s not a good idea to go into a moldy home. Mold can worsen underlying respiratory diseases and cause fungal infections in the lungs of people with weakened immune systems. With the highest percentage of residents age 65 and older in the nation, many Floridians may be at risk of getting sick.
Over a long period of time, even healthy people who are exposed to a wet, moldy, indoor environment may be at risk of developing allergies or asthma, Saff says. A comprehensive study conducted by the National Academy of Medicine and released in 2004 found there was sufficient evidence to link indoor exposure to mold with upper respiratory tract symptoms, such as coughing and wheezing, in otherwise healthy people. More recent studies have suggested that children exposed to indoor mold are more likely to develop asthma.
Scientists agree that mold can cause respiratory problems for some people, but there’s little evidence that it can induce fatigue, dizziness, headaches, and nausea—a collection of symptoms sometimes referred to as “sick building syndrome” and blamed on indoor mold. And contrary to popular belief, Stachybotrys chartarum, commonly known as black mold, is likely no more dangerous than other types of mold.
Ebrahim Ahmadisharaf, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at Florida State University, has been studying residential flooding and mold growth after hurricanes to learn more about its potential impacts on respiratory health. He and a team of hydraulic engineers and public health scientists surveyed 60 water-damaged homes in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as well as in South Florida, New York City, and Philadelphia after Hurricane Ida in 2021 and Hurricane Ian in 2022.
“It’s not just these extreme events that are becoming more frequent and intensified,” Ahmadisharaf says. “You can also have these chains of small rainfall events happening that can contaminate your indoor air.”
His team is aiming to find the major drivers of mold growth and their correlation with asthma and allergy symptoms. They first gathered information from homeowners on building characteristics, such as roof conditions and ventilation systems, as well as flood levels around their homes and how long flooding lasted. They then visited the properties and collected indoor and outdoor air and dust samples, from which they were able to identify more than 40 species of mold. They also collected data on whether occupants had respiratory symptoms or visited the hospital post flooding.
The team used machine learning models to help parse the data, which showed that the age of a roof, maximum flood depth, use of exhaust fans and their airflow rate, and how often residents opened windows were all important factors for mold growth. Ahmadisharaf says most of the mold issues researchers noticed were in low-income households. The research, which is supported by the National Science Foundation, has not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal.
For those returning to a water-damaged home, Saff says, there’s usually no need to pay hundreds of dollars for mold testing. Mold is easily identifiable by sight—it looks like fuzzy, slimy, or powdery spots—and by its musty smell.
He recommends sealing up moldy parts of the home with a tarp and creating a separate sleeping area if possible. Ventilate the area with open windows or fans. HVAC systems can spread mold, so they shouldn’t be turned on until mold has been removed.
“We start seeing the threat of mold whenever there’s moisture and excessive water,” says Jae Williams, director of communications for the Florida Department of Health. “So certainly, after a storm like the two that we’ve just had in the last couple of weeks, there’s a lot of storm surge and also some flooding.”
The Federal Emergency Management Agency can provide financial assistance to help low-income homeowners and renters repair or replace mold-damaged homes following hurricanes.
For those tackling cleaning their homes without professional help, the CDC recommends wearing an N95 respirator, gloves, and eye protection. Bleach or dish detergent can be used with water on hard surfaces. Affected areas should be allowed to dry completely. Carpet, upholstered furniture, and other absorbent materials that are moldy may need to be replaced.
“If it’s not dealt with,” Williams says, “it’s just going to continue to become a bigger problem and more pronounced in your home.”

asked by @ghost-in-a-player-piano: Which body part is the biggest problem for using the badwrong instructions that can make cancer? Is it the liver? Since the liver can regrow itself as part of everyday normal business, I bet it's up there. extension of this thread.
oh! fantastic observation; with respect to liver cancers, this is a big area of discussion. you're right: tissue regeneration, by default, can predispose it to regenerating just a little too well. cancer emerging from hepatocytes (hepatocellular carcinoma), which make up most of the liver, is indeed one of the most common forms of adult cancer.
(note: it's up there, but not the furthest up! more on that later.)
i want to be a bit careful though: the liver's ability to regrow has the potential to influence cancer development, but that's one player among many.
we should consider what makes the liver a potential breeding ground for tumours beyond its powerful ability to regrow itself by asking why it's regrowing so much at all. existing liver tissue likely sustained some damage. this could be through a lot of means, such as excess alcohol consumption or hepatitis. damage means inflammation: tissue becomes swollen, and the affected tissue experiences something called oxidative stress.
you can think of oxidative stress as the production of very hostile molecules that carry oxygen atoms with the potential to mess up DNA. these reactive oxygen species are always present in the cells of the body, because oxygen is key to our ability to get the most energy possible out of sugar (glucose, specifically). they just exist at levels the body can handle. in cases like long-term inflammation, however, there's a fair chance they'll reach overwhelming levels.
the liver's efforts to regenerate are, ironically, an effort to resolve this inflammation—that's the organ trying to heal! however, when cells get ready to divide, they make copies of their DNA, and pass on new mistakes to their descendants. the source of the mistakes might come from the copying process itself, or it might come from our nasty reactive oxygen species hitting our DNA repeatedly until critical instructions get tampered with. following liver damage, both of these things are happening... so things might go awry.
so! chronic inflammation sounds like a big fucking deal, and it is. when it comes to body parts that are the "biggest problem for using the badwrong instructions," a noticeable pattern emerges: several are organs highly susceptible to inflammation. more common than liver cancer are lung cancer and colorectal cancer, to name two.
to showcase the phenomenon that is chronic inflammation in more concrete examples:
tobacco users are more susceptible to lung cancer; cigarette smoke irritates the lungs. that is, it induces inflammation.
asbestos is an extremely infamous cancer-causing substance. this is because asbestos, at the microscopic level, is made up of extremely small, sharp fibers. they quite literally can embed into lung cells and cause long-term inflammation. most often, it causes a form of cancer called malignant mesothelioma.
you'll never guess what inflammatory bowel disease can do. people affected tend to be prescribed anti-inflammatory medications, which both lowers the risk of colorectal cancer while reducing pain.
inflammation and growth capacity are, again, two among many things that can set a healthy cell down the path of evil, but they are extremely common culprits in the world of cancer.

Espinya(Psychic/normal) (a Breed of Cat pokemon meant to resemble Espeon. its Psychic Powers are sensitive, causing it to detect any and all Dissatisfaction others feel about it. its split end tail has a spike of Red Crystal jutting out of them.)- Espikasha (Psychic/Poison)( the constant development of its Psychic powers have lead to this pokemon hearing everything about how others view it, and have caused such levels of Self loathing that its triggered its evolution. it has become Bipedal, and developed more of the crystal that once adorned its head and the tip of its tails across its body. it is hateful of most others due to its Distorted form of Telepathy that now only picks up emotions pointed towards it. the crystals on its now completely split tails are now complete crystal orbs that let off glowing mist that induce anxiety and destroy ones self confidence. It also developes more of its Crystals internally, and often need medical treatment to either remove these gems, or to permanently stop their development. this pokemon struggles to accept Kindness and love. it is also unbearably thin)(Kasha and Nekomata)
Umbrmao(Dark/Normal)(this breed of cat pokemon was bred to resemble Umbreon, but is now used for its unique ability to absorb negative emotions, which are used to Fuel its glowing Rings. its been strangely noted that it tends to Heave heavily the brighter its Rings glow or when the Moon is full. the bones at the tip of their tail are oddly split into tree tips)- Umbrarou(Dark/Poison)(its Constant feeding on Negative emotions has driven it mad, and has lead to its evolution. it has become bipedal, its glowing rings have begun Bulging and secreting Glowing Fluids. its tail has become a third arm as well, three claw tips fingers Jutting out the end, scratches from these claws often lead to increased aggression, and increased Hair growth, hair thicker then usual, hair that will concerningly have a glowing pattern.)(Werecat)

For years, the underground remained undisturbed.
But one fateful, dark night, everything changed.
A comet, unseen and unknown to the world above, hurtled through the sky and crashed violently into the underground. The impact was devastating, but the true horror began as the comet started to glow with a mysterious colour, a hue never before witnessed on Earth. This alien light radiated through the subterranean landscape, turning the entire farmstead into a scorching blast furnace. The heat was unimaginable, and it began to syphon the life force from every living thing within its reach.
Previously, when defeated in battle, their bodies would turn to dust, leaving little trace of their existence. But now something has changed. The fallen monsters no longer disintegrated. Instead, their corpses became the breeding grounds for crystal apparitions. These crystalline growths were both beautiful and deadly, glowing the same mysterious colour as the comet. If not destroyed in time, they would explode, unleashing massive damage and causing immense stress to anyone nearby.
The monsters began to exhibit a terrifying hunger. They became ravenous, their appetites insatiable. It was during this time that Gasser, a figure shrouded in dark ambition, devised a plan. He sought to harness the power of the comet's crystals, intending to experiment on the very souls of the monsters. His aim was to manipulate and enhance these souls using the otherworldly energy of the crystals.
Years passed, and the underground was marked by Gasser's relentless experiments. The monsters began to change. They grew stronger and more resilient, their powers amplified by the comet's influence.
Now, as the monsters return stronger than ever, they come organised, forming an army of formidable units:
Foot soldiers: can only use Sow the Seeds and Ceaseless Labour by default, with a slight bias towards Ceaseless Labour. They will use the skill Pause from Labour.
Defenders: Better equipped with shields and axes, these soldiers protect the front lines.
bhalaadhari: Littering the ranks, they thrust forward with their spears, impaling all in their path.
Arboles: crossbowmen who fire bolts that devastate marked targets, especially dangerous when paired with specialised units.
Har'a lihlopha tse khethehileng li: have three skills, two of which are buffs. Stir The Rabble will be automatically used on a soldiers if any are present
Captains: heavy-hitting frontline attackers clad in armour and wielding maces. Their steps quake the ground, stunning and leaving opponents open to attacks.
Courtiers: prefer to stay in the back rows, wielding goblets whose contents induce stress. They also carry daggers for close combat.
Knights: Vanguard of the army, clad in armour and carrying massive blades. They strike hard, setting themselves up for riposte, and grow stronger at death's door.
Banner Bearers: Supporters who boost the army's strength and can revive the undead unless the corpse is completely destroyed.
Tanbouyè: back-rank supporters who use drums to give orders. They can direct foot soldiers into defensive formations and command Arboles for volley fire. If the tanbouyè is the last unit alive, they will perform "mirin li ber berumetiye," executing himself before giving his enemies the chance.

Prologue
A long time ago, many years forgotten by the monsters, a nameless royal scientist created an artificial soul. This artificial soul was unique and powerful. The scientist immediately set to work experimenting with the soul's specs, which were of violet and yellow/blue. Initially, hope and wonder rose within them. However, the purple specs caused bulbous masses with sinuous tendrils to grow in the world. Their wonder turned into horror as they realized that what they created was not a weapon of salvation but a flaw in reality. It was a tarnishing of the world. Many years later, Alphy, a scientist with immense knowledge of ancient herbal medicine, Alphy began self-experimenting, consuming strange fungi and herbs in an attempt to gain insight into the world and the artificial soul. Her concoctions changed her physically and mentally. After a while, she began conducting secret experiments on other monsters.
The other monsters started to notice her strange behavior and experiments. Undyne, a warrior, was asked to convince Alphy to stop. However, Alphy refused. Undyne had two options: kill Alphy or join her and attempt to convince her to stop from within. Not wanting to see her love destroyed, Undyne chose to join her. Alphy noticed that every time she talked to Undyne, she tried to suppress the experiments. So, Alphy decided to experiment on Undyne, manipulating her mind just enough to convince her to fully join her.
The infection spread quickly. The monsters of the underground, affected by Alphy's experiments, began to change. With her new experiments, everything started to transform, especially the army.

SO glad you like my silly n weird ideas :""] Regarding the hearts question, it depends on how long they've grown at the time and which heart gives out, the front one / further back / etc - the reason they have so many hearts in the first place is to help pump blood throughout such a massive body. And the longer they get, the more work has to be put into that. So, if they're around 20-30 ish years old or less, they can probably survive a heart or two dying on them because the other hearts can pick up the slack (although the extra strain can promote further heart failure). But with each added foot, the amount of work/ importance each heart is deligated increases, and that makes it much harder to recover from a failure.
Essentially, at some point each heart has to mantain a body section alone and if that stops, then there's a domino effect that affects every heart preceding it since the blood exchange from section to section halted. If this happens though, there's a chance of survival if the hearts near the front/head are ok, as cutting off blood flow to the brain is definetly fatal. The other sections will die off but, as the hyperfauna weasels are literally predestined to have that happen at some point in their lives, it's not the end of the world. They even have systems that can function indipendently regardless of what happens to the body (cough cough. Waste disposal) so the biggest change just becomes limited movment.
For the question about preventing the fates of hyperfauna weasels, assuming that you mean as they are now and not by manually altering the entire species via selective breeding/ bioengineering, there IS. a theoretical way to manually stunt growth (also via bioengineering) but, it is VERY difficult to control the outcome over time, and without careful planning (like, what parts of the body are suppose to be stunted and what parts need to develop to survive? How to prevent this manual cell death from reaching something vital? At what age should they be stunted? At what age CAN they be stunted, before these alterations become harder to induce? etc) it can result in a load of problems that make their life over time a miserable one (or just kill them straight off).
Also, hyperfauna weasels are notorious for being difficult to work with medically/bio-manipulatively because 1] their skin is VERY thick, needles need to be long but strong enough to pierce them and NOT break on the way down (also few people can find their veins) 2] any effect needs time to travel throughout their entire body, which can take a WHILE (and depending on how long the effects are suppose to last, their former half could've already worn off while the latter is still feeling the effects [this makes anesthesia difficult bc it needs to be powerful enough to hit everywhere while not being so powerful that it causes heart failure]) 3] their cells are super stubborn/hard to change and it's difficult to intruduce new instructions to them, not to mention they're so hellbent on forever-growth that they're super hardy, multiply and die off quicker than any changes can be induced in them, and kill most foreign objects without prejudice.
All this to say they're a nightmare to manually bio-alter and your best bet would be to manipulate them at the embyonic stage, where they're most cellularly vulnerable / suseptable to change, and if all goes well you can artificially cease their growth after a point, but in terms of lore-reasons this hasn't happened yet. It's mostly because those who DO know about this species, at least by the time this kind of technology was available, just. don't really have the (cough. financial) motivation to do this. Bio-engineering companies are mostly about profit, and this kind of job would require bringing back a near extinct species (not impossible, just a chore) that needs a LOT of resources to mantain, monitoring over a LONG time to see if their alterations worked, and they'd end up with a lot of failed experiments that live almost forever before they get one that lives a reasonable, sustainable amount.
For the last question about their diet, they're omnivorous and can eat a lot of what normal weasels eat already :] although their portions have to be HUGE (even standing on all legs they can be over 5 ft tall, plus all that body length means a LOT of) so in a pinch they can eat most any kind of meat, plant-matter, even fungus.

Effect of Colchicine on In-vitro Cultures of Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) for Polyploid Development

Abstract
Crop improvement possibilities in turmeric Curcuma longa (L.) are limited due to its triploid nature except for polyploidisation. Colchicine is a chemical that is used frequently to make plants polyploidy. Hence, this research aimed to study the effect of colchicine on the ability to induce polyploidisation of in-vitro turmeric cultures. The study consisted of two experiments: (1) assay on in-vitro culturing for callus induction and (2) assay on colchicine treatments and polyploidy screening. In experiment 1, turmeric rhizome buds were cultured on MS-solidified medium for callus induction with 100 mL coconut water, 2.5 and 4.5 mg L-1 2,4-D, 0.93 mg L-1 KIN, and without growth regulators. In addition, cell suspension culture was tested for callus induction with 4.5 mg L-1 2,4-D and 0.93 mg L-1 KIN.  For polyploidy induction in experiment 2, in-vitro developed callus tissues were transferred to liquid MS medium supplemented with various concentrations of colchicine (0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20%) for 2 days. Then acetocarmine staining method and microscopic observation were attempted to count the chromosome number. Nucleus size; nucleus area (µmSq) and perimeter (µm) were referred using microscopic observation under 1000× magnification and BEL capture software. The results revealed that MS-solidified medium supplemented with coconut water was most effective in inducing callus. The nucleus area (371.225 µmSq) and perimeter (65.725 µm) of the cells in 0.05% colchicine for 2 days showed the highest results. It can be concluded that 0.05% colchicine concentration has an effect on nuclear size increment thereby possibly inducing polyploidization of turmeric.

Curcuma longa belongs to the triploid species (2n=3x=63), a rhizomatous perennial herb whose rhizome is used as one of the most common sources of spices in the world. Turmeric's unique flavour has made it popular for usage as a flavoring ingredient, cosmetic, textile dye, and other applications. Major active ingredients of turmeric include three curcuminoids; curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin , among curcumin is the main chemical component of turmeric with 0.3-8.6% (Phukan et al., 2022).

Therefore, crop improvement is timely and important for turmeric, targeting high-yielding varieties and enhancing the quality and quantity of curcumin, with high oleoresin and essential oil content, to overcome the hybridisation barrier and enhance the fertility of the plant, pest resistance, environmental adaptability, and stress tolerance for biotic and abiotic stress (Forrester et al., 2020).

A spontaneous mutation is one way of generating genetic diversity (Ulukapi and Nasircilar, 2018). However, it is a very rare chance to happen (Oladosu et al., 2016). Also, there are many problems when considering conventional breeding of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) and crop improvement (Dudekula et al., 2022). This is a monocotyledonous species, rarely flowering. It is classified as a sterile triploid plant (2n = 3x = 63) and cannot be used as parents for further breeding and to produce sterile flowers with no gametes. Therefore, having drawback of making inter-specific crosses (Ketmaro et al., 2012). Also, during the growing season (8-10 months) each rhizome can produce 10-25 lateral buds, but only 4-6 of them actively develop plantlets. Due to its nature, it has a limited genetic diversity and therefore, crop improvement and conventional breeding is difficult (Upendri and Seran, 2021). Thus a research was aimed to study the effect of colchicine on the ability to induce polyploidisation of invitro turmeric cultures.
