How to Choose the Right Breast Pump: Factors to Consider for Optimal Milk Expression and Comfort
Selecting the right breast pump is an important decision for breastfeeding mothers. Whether youâre returning to work, need to build a supply for your baby, or simply want the flexibility to feed your baby expressed milk, the right breast pump can make all the difference. This guide outlines key factors to consider to help you choose a breast pump that meets your needs.
1. Type of Breast Pump
Breast pumps come in various types, each suited for different needs and preferences. Understanding the differences can help you make an informed choice.
Manual Pumps
Manual breast pumps are a popular option for mothers who occasionally pump. They are typically more affordable and portable, making them ideal for travel or occasional use. However, manual pumps require more effort and may not be as efficient for mothers who need to pump regularly.
Electric Pumps
Electric breast pumps are generally faster and more efficient, making them a better choice for regular pumping. They come in two main types:
Single Electric Pumps: These pumps allow you to express milk from one breast at a time. They are compact and suitable for occasional use.
Double Electric Pumps: These pumps enable you to pump from both breasts simultaneously, significantly reducing pumping time. They are perfect for busy mothers or those looking to establish a robust milk supply.
Hospital-Grade Pumps
Hospital-grade breast pumps are powerful, high-performance pumps designed for mothers who need to pump frequently or have specific health issues, such as low milk supply or premature infants. These pumps are usually available for rent and can be an excellent investment for mothers facing challenges with breastfeeding.
2. Comfort and Fit
Comfort is paramount when choosing a breast pump. An ill-fitting breast shield can lead to discomfort, pain, or even damage to the nipple. Here are some tips to ensure comfort and fit:
Breast Shield Size: Most pumps come with standard-sized breast shields, but many manufacturers offer different sizes. It's essential to measure your nipple size to choose the right shield for your comfort.
Adjustable Settings: Look for pumps with adjustable suction and speed settings. This feature allows you to customize your pumping experience according to your comfort level and needs.
Padding and Material: Some breast shields come with soft padding or are made from silicone, which can enhance comfort during pumping sessions.
3. Portability
For active mothers, portability is a critical factor in choosing a breast pump. If you plan to pump while at work, traveling, or running errands, consider the following:
Weight and Size: A lightweight and compact pump is easier to transport. Look for pumps that come with a carrying case for convenience.
Power Options: Consider whether the pump is battery-operated or requires a power outlet. Battery-operated pumps provide greater flexibility for on-the-go pumping.
Noise Level: If youâre concerned about noise while pumping in public or at work, look for pumps designed to operate quietly.
4. Ease of Cleaning
Keeping your breast pump clean is essential for your babyâs health. When selecting a breast pump, consider the following aspects related to cleaning:
Fewer Parts: Pumps with fewer components are easier to clean. Look for designs that minimize the number of parts that come into contact with milk.
Dishwasher-Safe Components: Some breast pumps come with dishwasher-safe parts, making the cleaning process more convenient.
Sterilization: Consider how easy it is to sterilize the pump. Some pumps can be steam-sterilized, while others may require manual cleaning.
5. Price and Warranty
Breast pumps are available at various price points, so itâs crucial to establish a budget before making a decision. Keep the following in mind:
Budget: Consider how often youâll use the pump and what features are most important to you. While manual pumps are typically cheaper, investing in a high-quality electric or hospital-grade pump may be worthwhile if you plan to pump frequently.
Warranty: Check the warranty offered by the manufacturer. A good warranty can provide peace of mind, ensuring that you can repair or replace your pump if any issues arise.
Conclusion
Choosing the right breast pump involves understanding your personal needs, preferences, and lifestyle. By considering the type of pump, comfort, portability, ease of cleaning, and price, you can find a breast pump that supports your breastfeeding journey effectively.Investing in a quality breast pump can enhance your breastfeeding experience, providing you with the flexibility and convenience you need as a new mother. Sam x Grizz Fanfic -Â âRather than love, than money, than fame, give me truthâ
Third part and possible last of âThe sun is but a morning starâ series - grizz meets eden and its cute x
also posted of ao3;Â https://archiveofourown.org/works/21281282
It had been a week since Eden was born and she was thriving. Being constantly showered in affection but not only her extremely tired parents; but her extended family which included Kelly, Gordie, and Bean. Little did she know the biggest disaster of the small world of New Ham she had been born into. Things still hadnât mellowed down; even with many trying to figure out what they were going to do to try to fix the mess theyâd been landed in. This was something that was extremely worrying for Grizz. He hadnât seen Sam since they reunited; he thought it best to give him a little bit of space, especially as he still technically had a new-born to look after. Grizz ached to see Sam but he didnât want to disturb him or Becca. Although the tension between him and Sam had finally disappeared; he still felt as if he still couldnât barge in on Sam and Becca. It was as if heâd ruin their little family of bliss, and that was the last thing he wanted to do.
It was his third day back since arriving from the expedition and heâd spent most of that time in his room, hiding. Anyone else who had been living in his house had already cleared out when he first arrived, which was actually a blessing. Back when Allie was in charge, as part of the guard, Grizz spent most of his time at Allieâs, rarely going home (only to change or shower). He remembered how after a few weeks of Allie being mayor, Grizz and Gordie started their own little book club, just to past the time. Soon enough Bean and Becca joined in, just to listen. Then Sam. Theyâd all try to least have breakfast together at least once a week, like a family ritual. Gordie made coffee, Grizz the tea, Sam the toast (even though it was burnt almost every time). Theyâd take about menial, mundane, meaningless things. Life before New Ham. What they were going to do after graduation, how much they all hated Mr. Cam and his dumb moustache, missing their families, the normality of their lives before. Grizz took charge of watering all the plants, whilst Bean and Becca would go around the garden picking out the prettiest flowers to decorate the house. Will changed all the light bulbs whenever they broke, even though he seemed to smash most of them. If anyone was having a rough day; Grizz would leave a small but inspiring quote on their pillow or pin it to the fridge. Daily group naps became an important part of everyoneâs day. They all took care of each other. But all of that was gone now. Cassandra dead. Luke, a traitor. Allie arrested. Will arrested. Becca, a mother. Sam, a father. Bean scared. Gordie alone. Grizz alone.
These thoughts floated around Grizzâs mind whenever he wasnât thinking about Sam. Samâs lips. Samâs freckles all dotted perfectly on his face. Samâs soft, soft hair. Samâs sparkling, vivid blue eyes. He wanted to touch him again, all of him. Even just to be in his presence, Grizz pined for him. The space between them was almost becoming too much. It was as if there were oceans between the two. Grizz was being pulled down by the weight of his need for Sam. He knew heâd have to talk to Sam again. No, not âhave toâ, he wanted to. He wanted to see that special smile, the one that seemed to make Grizz forget anytime he wasnât with Sam.
Once again, Grizz knew heâd have to be the one to make the first move, Sam had a new-born to take care of after all. He moved along his bed, reaching for his phone which was placed on the bedside table. Before typing, he quickly scrolled through the texts he and Sam had sent each other, nothing special, nothing incriminating but every single word held so much more than it first appeared. Grizz typed out the message and hit sent before he could think otherwise, not wanting to waste a moment longer.
Grizz: Hey
He flicked off the message, not wanting to see the non-existence of the three little dots and scrolled down to his last conversation with Luke. Again, meaningless. Luke had taken Grizzâs varsity jacket by mistake when they were on duty one night and was offering to swap. Grizzâs slender fingers started to type up a message but quickly deleted those words. No real words could be sent. No real words could describe the hurt Grizz felt when he realised what Luke, his best friend, had done. Yes, he felt betrayed. Luke, whoâd Grizz had known since he was 7 years old. Luke, whoâd Grizz had stuck by through all of those years. Luke, who was popular with everyone, but never seemed to let it go to his head. Luke, who loved Grizz like a brother. Luke, who Grizz couldnât tell who he truly was. Luke. This intense thought was interrupted by a slight vibration coming from Grizzâs phone, to which Grizz scrambled to pick up and dropped the phone 4 times before opening up the message.
Sam: Hey; sorry I havenât been around much. Are you okay?
Grizz: Itâs fine, Iâm fine. Are you? Howâs Eden?
Sam: All she does is cry and poop; like Becca đ
Sam: I want to see you; can I see you?
Grizz: Haha, Iâll tell her you said that đ
Grizz: Of course, you can.
Sam: Come to Beccaâs house later. 6?
Grizz: Iâll see you then x
As soon as Grizz sent that kiss, he regretted him. Not completely sure why, especially as he and Sam had done far more to warranty a simple âxâ on a text, but still. Sam and Grizz had seemed to move so fast, something that at the time Grizz wasnât aware of. At first, it definitely wasnât something to complain about. But the day Grizz and the group left for the expedition, only moments after he said goodbye to Sam, that bittersweet departure, he wondered how theyâd gotten to where they were.
Beccaâs house was the other side of town, and unfortunately for Grizz that was a sure set for him bumping into someone he really didnât want to see. The last time Grizz had around Beccaâs, it was the first time heâd been properly alone with Sam. After meeting in the library, to his Grizzâs delight, Sam had invited him round to practise some ASL. It had only been for a few hours, but Grizz had actually learned a lot. Not just about ASL.
Upon arriving at Samâs, Grizz contemplated knocking or just walking straight back home. His nerves had started to kick in once again, something that was becoming a regular occurrence when it came to Sam. He doubted Sam even knew what he did to him. Brushing those thoughts aside, he lightly tapped on the door, as if there was a small part of him that hoped no one could hear it. Of course, he wanted to see Sam, but it had been a few days and that meant time to think. And in his current state, thinking wasnât particularly wise.
Only a few seconds passed before the door swung open as if Sam was eagerly waiting for the other boy. Grizz was greeted by those beautiful, blue eyes, the ones that made him feel all giddy inside. When Sam looked at him with those eyes, it was as if they were made especially for him and only him. Grizz didnât care if he never looked at anything else.
âHey,â Grizz quickly signed to Sam, before being pulled into a big bear hug by the smaller boy, something heâd missed in their few days apart. Sam seemed to grip tightly on Grizzâs shoulders as if he never wanted to let go. Grizz was wearing his hair in one of his tight buns; a look that made Sam go absolutely crazy.
âI missed you.â Sam looked up at Grizz, his eyes glistened with complete and utter despair, which was something Sam didnât like to see. He hadnât expected things to go back to how they were before; that would have been stupid. It would take some time. But all they had was time.
Grizz raised his eyebrows, âItâs been two days, Sam.â Â to which Sam shrugged and led Grizz to the kitchen, which Grizz hated to say was a complete tip. The table was covered in a variety of different baby essentials; baby wipes, a breast pump, nappies. Parent life he supposed.
âYouâve been busy, huh?â Grizz said, whilst picking up a loose baby wipe, frowning at the sight of it.
Grizz didnât know much about babies. How many 18-year olds did? Grizz had never had much to do with babies or other children. Being an only child and living away from any cousins or extended family made sure of that. Grizz liked to think he was pretty good with kids, he and Luke helped out with the junior football team sometimes and he enjoyed it. He liked to think heâd be pretty good with younger children too. But he never got the chance.
âBabies,â Sam answered and yanked the baby wipe out of Grizzâs hand, throwing it aside.
âYou look tired.â Grizz signed hastily, to which Sam gave a âno shitâ look.
âI am exhausted. All I want to do is sleep.â Grizz chuckled at that comment, edging closer to Sam, closing the gap between the two. He wanted to touch Sam again, even if only for a moment. Skin on skin. Something. Just something.
Sam waited a moment before asking his next question, unsure whether it would be too raw still. âDo you want to meet her?â Sam couldnât think of anything better, than seeing Eden in Grizzâs arms. That was what his dreams were made of.
âWhat?â This had caught Grizz off guard; something that had happened quite a lot when it came to Sam. Grizz couldnât explain what he did to him, but he wasnât going to deny that he enjoyed it. The natural path for this meeting to go would likely have included meeting Eden, but this thought hadnât crossed Grizzâs mind. It wasnât that he hadnât thought or didnât care about Eden, but there had been more important things for Grizz to worry about. Firstly, figuring out how the fuck everything had turned to shit so quickly. And how he could protect Sam.
âEden. You wanna see her?â Sam cocked his head, not wanting to pressure Grizz into anything, but making it pretty clear that he would absolutely love to see it.
Not wanting to disappoint Sam, Grizz slowly nodded, trying to seem as eager as he could at that moment. âI..uhâŠyeah, yeah.â
âSure? You donât have to.â Sam knew this was still difficult for Grizz. Sure, Sam wasnât the biological father, but he was Edenâs father and he would be for the rest of his life. He never wanted to hurt Grizz or make life hard, but he didnât want to separate the two sides of his life. And Grizz holding Eden was something he had to see. Desperately.
âYes, Sam. I want to see her.â Grizz signed carefully, wanting to make sure that Sam understood that he wasnât going to be awkward. How could he? It wouldnât be fair of him.
Sam nodded, âOkay.â And pulled Grizz towards the staircase near the back of the house, Grizz hadnât paid much attention to the interior the last time he was here. He obviously had other things on his mind at the time, which had been on his mind ever since heâd spoken to Sam properly. But the house was quaint, relatively small and had that âhomelyâ smell Grizz could only dream of when he was growing up.
The two entered Sam and Beccaâs room, which is occupied by a very exhausted sleeping Becca and gurgling Eden. Grizz stopped dead, like a deer in traffic lights when he first saw Sam pick up Eden. He looked so natural, cradling her in his arms. This image, such a perfect image, still brought some sadness to Grizz.
âSheâs beautiful.â Grizz signed this, putting special emphasis on âbeautifulâ, unsure if heâd actually signed it right. Heâd been practising this sign specifically after last seeing Sam. He had a feeling he would be using it more often.
âWe think so too, perfect little angel apart from when she starts screeching. Loses her charm a little.â Sam whispered this, obviously not wanting to stir the small child. He moved closer to Grizz, delicately placing Eden in Grizzâs strong arms.
âOh, she could never,â Grizz mused, looking down at Eden, giving her a small smile. She was so small, so tiny, so soft, so clean. She seemed to stop stirring as if she felt so calm in his arms. Looking down at this perfect being, Grizz couldnât understand how anything could be bad again.
Sam gave Grizz a tired smile and motioned to take Eden back. Grizz complied, carefully handing Eden back to Sam, cradling her head as he did. âShe has her eyes, Becca, donât you think?â Sam nodded again, his eyes started to droop ever so slightly, whilst placing Eden back in her crib. He stared down at her for a few seconds, as if he was in his own little world, waiting for her to drift off once again.
âYou need to sleep, Sam.â Grizz interrupted Samâs thoughts, whatever they were, placing his hand on Samâs right shoulder, wrapping his fingers down, slotting in perfectly with Samâs skin. Sam brushed him off, physically and mentally, frowning. Of course, he needed sleep. Understatement of the century. But everyone needed sleep. Grizz doubted anyone slept a goodnightâs sleep the day the expedition group came back. Everyone was filled with worry. Gordie had visited Grizz after dinner that first night back, briefly filling him in on the events. That had scared Grizz. But that wasnât the main thing. People had stopped going to the cafeteria, only a handful turned up for that nightâs dinner. This just reminded Grizz of when Cassandra died; they had just managed to sort it out before it got any worse. But Grizz didnât think theyâd be so lucky this time.
âIâm serious. You look like shit.â
âIs that how you charm all your boyfriends?â Sam muses before realising what he said, quickly looking at Grizz, a worried look started to appear on his face. âI didnât-âstuttered Sam, wondering why he ever said anything when he was around Grizz. It was like his brain didnât work.
âRightâŠâ Grizz couldnât help but a chuckle a little but tried his best to keep it in, not wanting to embarrass Sam. Quickly changing the subject, Grizz interjected, âBut seriously, if you donât go to bed right now, Iâm gonna have to carry you.â Now that was a threat. Grizz wasnât even sure if that was possible. Sure, Sam wasnât the biggest guy in the world, he was quite a few inches shorter than Grizz, but who wasnât? From his 13, Grizz had always been the tallest in his class, thatâs what made him so good at football. It was just easy. But that world seemed so far away, and nothing in his life now was easy.
Inching away from Grizz, Sam started to pick up some of Edenâs things; a baby pink blanket that had seen better days, the raggedy elephant plush that Gordie had gifted them and a single dummy. Grizz could tell Sam was doing his best to ignore him, but it became obvious that he was failing.
âCome on, sleepyhead,â Grizz said this more sternly, he was genuinely concerned about the amount of sleep Sam was getting. No one was sleeping properly, but still, Sam looked like he was about to collapse.
Sam shook his head, moving away from Grizz once again. âI need to keep an eye on Eden.â Thatâs all he had done for the past few days. It was the least he could do for Becca, who had carried Eden all that time, and was so damn exhausted. It wasnât like it was a chore though, Sam relished every moment he spent with her. He never knew anything could be so precious. So precious but so loud. So, tiring.
Grizz knew this tactic; heâd himself used it before when blocking Sam out. This was one of the things heâd regretted. He never wanted that, quite the contrary actually, he wanted them to be honest with each other.
âNope. No way. Bedtime.â Grizz only signed âbedtimeâ, placing his right hand onto his left eye, and tapped the top of his wrist, where one of his hair ties was wrapped around.
âBut-â
âIâll look after her. Least I can do.â
âYouâre tired too.â Sam sighed, he didnât want to ever put Grizz out or make him uncomfortable. Sure, Eden was adorable, and no one in their right mind could resist her. But Sam knew it was still a delicate subject and he didnât want to force that onto Grizz. Then again, it was becoming very clear that Sam could not work with next to no sleep. And who was he to argue?
âIâll come join you, later. When sheâs settled. Deal?â Â Grizz signed all of this, allowing his fingers to move swiftly and smoothly, once again unsure whether heâd done it right, there still seemed so much he needed to learn. That was something he wanted to request from Sam, but in his current state, thought it best to wait until Sam could actually stand up without his eyes drooping as if his eyes would roll out of his head.
âYou. Are. So. Annoying.â Sam enunciated these words, poking Grizzâs chest with his index finger each time. He knew heâd might as well give in, Grizz didnât seem to be wavering and Sam never wanted to fight with him again, that had been far too exhausting.
âYeah, yeah. Letâs go, before I have to pick you up and carry you there.â Grizz started to manoeuvre Sam towards the door, giving him a slight push, to which Sam complied. If he was being completely honest, going to sleep was something heâd wondered if heâd ever experience again. He never knew babies could be so demanding. Cute, but demanding.
âBossy.â Sam signed, placing his index finger on and off of his chin three times, almost aggressively. This quite new to Grizz, heâd only ever seen Sam sign with an almost calmness, even when he was angry, he never seemed to raise his voice. Which was something he loved about him.
âStop winging.â Grizz scoffed just as Sam directed them to the only other bedroom in the house, which Grizz quickly realised must have been Beccaâs momsâ room. The remnants of a middle-aged woman living there were still quite clear; the odd photo of Becca and her mom, a single David Bowie vinyl and a plush velvet throw sprawled across the king-sized bed. Even though Beccaâs mom had likely never even been in this version of her room, Grizz felt slightly uncomfortable, as if he was invading her privacy.
Sam flopped down on his bed, star fishing across the sheets. Grizz turned to leave the room but was quickly pulled down on top of Sam. Sam let one of his hands go from Grizzâs wrist, placing it on the back of his neck, slowly caressing it. He gave him a little smirk, before crashing their lips together, almost in slow motion, like a blurred dream. This kiss was fuller, Sam seemed to have complete control, moving his tongue around Grizzâs mouth, wrapping it perfectly against the other boyâs. his hungry mouth melded into the other. Making sure he didnât pull away, Grizz slid his body down beside Sam, holding tightly to his head. Their lips magnetised with each other; they were naturally attracting to each other like a type of force of nature. Meant to be. Sam quickly moved his hand up towards Grizzâs head, pulling out his hair tie and gripped onto a lock of hair, pulling it slowly. Moans escaped Grizzâs mouth as the kiss developed and Sam could feel his breathlessness against his own mouth. Grizz hungrily pushed back, working his mouth against Samâs, their tongues battling with each other, trying to pin each other down. Grizz could feel the heat rising in his cheeks and removed Samâs other hand from his wrist to feel his face. The kiss started to slow down a little, Samâs muscles were tiring. He slowly pulled away, but placed a short, sweet kiss on Grizzâs lips before laying back down on the bed. The two boys laid there quietly, both breathing hard.
âNow, Iâm tired.â

I purchased the Medela with my second and have used it full time (3x a day, 5 days a week) for 3 months now and still going strong. I have a LOT to say about these pumps, but the bottom line is Medela is far superior. If you donât want to read the full review, save yourself time, money, and frustration and purchase a Medela.

My experience with Ameda: I purchased this pump for two main reasons. First, it was a closed system (milk canât get into tubes) and the cost differential â there was a greater one when I purchased the Ameda in 2011. At first things worked well. I starting pumping at night to build supply before returning to work. After returning to work, things continued well for a few months, then all of a sudden my supply started dropping. I could tell that my pump âwasnât quite the sameâ so I read and read online. Ultimately, I determined that I needed to replace the valves. I did, and things improved⊠for a few weeks. Then, again, my supply dropped, I replaced the valves and things improved for a short time. This repeated several times (those valves are $7 for a pair⊠that adds up!!!!). I spent more than what I wanted to on replacement valves. This went on until my son was 7 months and then my supply all but dried up. When it got to the point that I could only get 4 oz per day and I was pumping 3x a day for 20 minutes each I decided it was time to switch to formula. Did I blame the pump? Not at the time, but now, absolutely! So, I cleaned everything well and packed it away carefully knowing that I would need it again for the next baby (except for the time when my close friend had her Ameda motor die on her after about 6 months of daily use and she borrowed mine for a week â hers was under the 1 year warranty, so Ameda did send a replacement free of charge). When my second baby came, I pulled it back out and pumped some during maternity leave without issue at first (new valves). Then all of a sudden I felt the pump âwasnât quite the sameâ so I took it to a lactation consultant to look it over. We tested just the motor and it was reading the correct suction pressure. We checked the tubing and other connections until we found the root cause; THE VALVES!!!!!! The bad valve was essentially causing the pump to pull less than half the expected vacuum. Bottom line, it was worthless with bad valves. The lactation consultant opened a new package of valves from her own store and one of them was bad right of package. We went through all of mine and the majority of them were bad. No wonder my supply dried up⊠I was pumping, but with bad valves I wasnât actually removing milk. If you donât remove milk your body slows the production. I decided at that point to test until I found a few extra good valves and then anytime I needed more, I would just have to come back and test to 100% verify that the valves I was using were good. I DID NOT want to lose my supply again just because of the bad valves. Well, it didnât matter, because a week into me pumping at work, my motor started to go out. Yes, it was 2 years old, but the actual working life of the pump was about 5. Either way, I may have only used it for 5 months but it was not under warranty so I purchased a brand new Medela pump. My experience with Medela: I purchased a Medela Pump in Style and what a difference!!! I could tell an immediate difference, but for the sake of not wanting the ânew and shinyâ aspect to persuade my review, Iâve waited to write this. So, with the Ameda in my first two weeks of work, I already saw a decline in my milk supply. This gem got my supply back up to normal within 3 days. If thatâs not enough to persuade you to go with Medela, I donât know what will. I have no complaints with this pump. In fact, that close friend that I mentioned hers broke on her⊠when she has a second little one I plan to help her buy a Medela. Yes, Iâm that passionate about it. I feel sorry for the mommy that buys the Ameda and then doesnât have the support system or money to problem solve the Ameda issues and buy all those replacement valves. Here are my opinions on the other aspects of the pumps: Bag: The backpack is tall and forces you to stack things. So, when you need the cooler from the bottom, you have to pull everything out. The tote, while maybe a little bigger is better organized so I donât end up pulling everything out and readjusting. The Ameda is designed so you can pull the motor out of the bag, the Medela is not. So far that hasnât presented a problem, but I can understand if you want to tuck it away in a small bag how it might be. The Ameda has no room to spare. If you want to bring a book along, good luck. With my Medela bag, I pack the hands free bra, extra bottles, a book, and extra accessories⊠with room to spare! Setup/Takedown: I felt like it was a much bigger deal to setup the Ameda to pump. You have to pull everything out of the bag and setup and then take it all back down and put away. With the Medela, the motor stays in the bag and everything stores nicely so you donât have to pull everything out. I never have to take the cooler out and the tubes stay attached and have a nice little storage bag next to the motor. Flanges/Valves/Fittings: The Ameda accomplishes a âhygienicâ closed system, which is a great concept, but comes at a price. I attribute this to my inadequate pumping and ultimately my supply drying up. The silicone diaphragm seemed to always get stuck in the vacuum position and the valves constantly needed replaced. I never did have to clean the tubes though. I also bought a different sized flange, but it was one that slide into the existing one and I never felt it made a good seal. The Medela is an open system and I do get condensation in the tubing. Itâs worth it to me though because I know Iâm getting great suction. I simply run my pump for a minute or two afterwards and it dries them out. The little white membranes provide the same function as the Ameda valves, but they are much less expensive and are much less likely to need replacing. I also had to buy a different flange size for the Medela, but it is designed so that the flange itself can just simply be a plug and play. Itâs not an insert like the Ameda so I donât have to worry about another joint that could potentially lead to suction loss. Cooler: The coolers are about the same size, but the Medela only has enough room for 4 bottles. The Ameda has room for 6. I only 4 - 5oz bottles so it works perfectly for me. With the Ameda, the ice packs never lasted long enough in my opinion. The Medela icepack is far superior. I even heat my milk to scald (150 deg F) â lipase enzyme issue you can Google if youâre interested in learning about it â and then I stick it in the bag and it is able to cool it and keep it cold until the evening! Itâs awesome. Bottles: Ameda is 4 oz, Medela is 5 oz. Other than that, they are essentially the same. I donât use them. I pump into the Playtex drop-ins pump and store liners and then they pop into the drop-in bottles (less bottle washing!). Motor: The vacuum supposedly is rated the same (lactation consultant shared that with me, but Iâm not going to lie I didnât read into it), but my experience is that the Medela is more reliable (several reviews report motors dying prematurely⊠which I experienced as well as my close friend). Also, the Ameda has the ability to adjust both speed and suction. At first I thought this would be perfect, but the more I used it, the more I was annoyed that it didnât just automatically adjust. How am I supposed to know how fast it should go? Haha. So, the fact that the Medela pump does itâs automatic fast speed at first for letdown then adjusts to regular on its own or with the push of a button makes my life much easier. Iâve never once thought how nice it would be to adjust the speed myself. With the Ameda I always had to use full suction. With the Medela I have it at half suction and it works perfectly! Also, the Medela works faster for me than the Ameda did. Cleaning: The flanges are essentially the same. The two things that are different about cleaning is that the Ameda valves are a pain to clean because you really canât clean them for risk of damaging them⊠and they are expensive! I gently rinsed them and left it at that. With the Medela, I do have to rinse the tubes once a week and have to do it when Iâm certain I wonât need them⊠because you have to wait for them to dry completely before use again. So far it hasnât been an issue. Availability of parts: Because Medela is a better known brand, you can find just about any replacement item you need at Target. So, when you need that emergency membrane/valve, you can almost guarantee youâll find it at a nearby story, whereas, with Ameda I was overnight shipping if I had an emergency. Noise: The Ameda is much louder and more obnoxious sounding the Medela. Mine had a whirring sound when it pumped. Others who heard it thought something was wrong with it and usually asked if everything was okay (they were Medela users). Batteries: If youâre going to pump in the car, even once, buy the car adapter. These things sucks batteries like crazy (both of them). The battery pack is external with the Medela, which is has to be since you canât remove the motor⊠but it makes it annoying. Hands free: Do yourself a favor and get a hands free pumping bra! In conclusion, buy Medela and rest assured youâve made the right decision.
This sucks. Quite literally in fact! I was lucky enough to have a sweet baby that was born 5 weeks premature. She was perfect in every way but had to spend 3 of those extra weeks in the NICU. (I think they just wanted more time with her) One of the many perks that we were provided is the "Pump for Preemie Program". They allow you to take home a hospital grade breast pump (also a Medela) and hold your baby as collateral. It sounds like I am joking but when they were releasing her from the NICU, I had 5 nurses call me to make sure I brought the pump or else they wouldn't let me take her home. Literally 5! That pump was amazing - it has a better suction than the personal use pumps but that is not always a good thing. The main difference is that I had to pump for longer using this pump than with the hospital grade to get the same amount. It was just an extra couple of minutes. The longer pump time is MORE than worth the price difference. The hospital grade ones are insanely expensive ( but you can rent them if you wanna try it out - try Babies-R-Us) On to this pump - It's a great deal. You get a portable pump, ice pack, power plug, bottles and accessories. You will certainly need additional accessories but Medela makes that easy by offering a lot of "gift packs" or "new mom" kits. The breast pump I ended up with had the "On the go tote" that is pictured here but they also offer a backpack or a "Metro" messenger bag. (I suggest you go for the tote and get the CheekyTummy diaper backpack or use it with the Boba 4g baby carrier that has straps on the shoulder to help hold your bags. That keeps arms open to block strangers (and Grandma) from kissing on your baby and waking him up.) This pump can be run on A/C power or 8 AA batteries. They make it significantly heavier, so get to the plug when you can. It is designed to be a double pump but you can always use it on just one breast. The breast shields come in medium- I don't have huge boobs and my nipples didn't grow 3 sizes, like the grinch's heart, so those worked well for me. The larger sizes that I tried at the hospital would try to suck in my entire boob and my will to live. A good way to tell if you have the right size is to see what is sucking in and rubbing. If all of your nipple is rubbing/chaffing against the inside of the flange, than you probably need to try the next size up. It should fit the center of the flange and by the middle of the pump you will see it has reached maximum size is gliding along the inner edges smoothly. If it is sucking in areola and nipple - it's too big.
youtube
I got one of the "hands free" bras to go with it. The idea is great - pump without having to hold two little milk troughs to your chest. The execution makes it hard. I would suggest trying it with a tight tank top first. Just channel Regina George from Mean Girls and cut holes on each nipple and stick the flange through. Honestly, your probably not walking around and pumping as it is your only chance to actually sit down. Some well placed pillows will hold up the bottles so you can pump, check facebook, and continue to rock the baby's swing so she doesn't wake up mid-let down. This pump is quiet - but not silent. It's like an aggressive, nipple sucking, purring cat. They have quieter ones on the market but I am not sure they can hold up the level of suction over the long term. The hoses can build up quite a bit of condensation in them, which can mold. Make sure to air them out whenever you see little droplets in them. You can point the tubes downward put the pump on full blast without the breast shields on and let it air out the hoses before let down starts. You can also use rubbing alcohol to clean them but I never tried that. All in all, this is a wonderful product. I am glad I spent the extra dollars and went for Medela over an off brand. The replacement parts are easy to find. I would highly recommend it - it will be your best friend and your worst enemy!

Then the next step is to send a warranty claim and they warn in big bold letters: If you send two claims, we will deny your warranty request!!
I almost feel like i'm causing them a serious inconvenience with my warranty claim. mastitis, engorgement, baby feeding, not having a pump for two weeks are all problems that they seem very unconcerned about.

Buy this pump. Seriously, stop looking, buy it. This review is long but will hopefully answer any questions you have. Or post one and I'll try to answer it.
Earlier this year I had twins born at 34 weeks. They were doing well, but did spend some time in the NICU. When babies are in the NICU, you become super obsessed with how much milk they are getting. They can't go home until they take their "minimums" and gain weight. As a result, I've pretty much been exclusively pumping since they were born. My girl would latch, but I couldn't tell how much she was getting and she would get tired after a few minutes and wouldn't take the rest of her bottle. My boy had breathing problems at first and was being fed with a tube for the first 10 days. After that he had to learn how to eat and would get tired, so I didn't try to nurse him. Since I had to feed two and wanted to share my supply, pumping was the way to go.
Since I had preemies, my insurance paid for me to use a Medela Lactina pump. This is the big blue thing that is "hospital grade" and retails for a boatload ($1500 for the love!). I used the Lactina for the first two months but wanted something more portable (I bought a car adapter so I could plug it in and pump in the car on long days out). And, the Lactina is loud as all get out, which was annoying and I actually covered it with a blanket to muffle the sound so I could pump in the same room my husband and 3 year old daughter were watching TV in so I could be part of the family. I contemplated getting a Medela Freestyle, but read mixed reviews about being able to maintain supply. Having twins I did not want to risk my supply going down.
I took a leap of faith and bought this pump using gift cards for about half the cost. I figured if it didn't work at least I wasn't out all the money. Best. Decision. Ever.
youtube
Awesomeness: -It is SUPER quiet compared to the Lactina. I have no idea how it compares to other pumps, but it is going to be nice to have at work and be able to answer the phone while pumping. -It is pretty portable. I wanted something I could clip to my belt and walk around the house, but that is the Freestyle and I couldn't risk it. This is pretty lightweight, and I'm actually contemplating putting a ribbon through the handle and putting it over my neck. It never fails that when I'm pumping my husband is out of the house and my older daughter needs something. At the very least, I've put it on with my hands-free pumping bra (Simple Wishes brand- buy that too) and been able to put it on the kitchen counter to make bottles or lunch or whatever. Haven't tried cooking dinner yet, but that may happen. -Nightlight is pretty neat, and has two levels. -Timer is a cool feature. Most folks don't need to pump for more than 15-20 minutes, but most folks don't have twins. The timer shuts the pump off after 30 minutes which is how long I pump for. I used to set a timer on my phone, but don't need to do that so much anymore. -Massage feature is pretty nifty. This pump almost pulses when creating suction. It was kind of weird at first since the other pump didn't do it, but it actually makes pumping pretty comfortable. The "massage" feature speeds up the pump and is designed to stimulate letdown. Once you have letdown, you are supposed to turn off the massage feature. (I don't, I like the fastest speed for my pumping. But again, twins.) -Memory feature- the pump remembers what your last "normal" and "massage" settings were and goes back to them. -Vacuum control- I use the pump on either level 2 or 3. It has 12 levels. Wow. As a nurse I'm really wondering who would need level 12. Maybe for someone with inverted nipples. Maybe if the battery ever gets weak I'll need to go up.
Quirks: -It took a LONG time (probably 12 hours) to fully charge the battery when I first got the pump. It also says it can run plugged in, which is true, but so far as I can tell actually uses the battery regardless of whether or not it is plugged in. I could be wrong. -If you use the nightlight feature while pumping it will drain your battery faster, and you will likely not get a full three hours of pump time. Probably not a problem for most people but worth noting. -The bottles and pump kit are pretty cheap. That would probably be my biggest gripe about the whole thing. If we are spending this much money on a pump, the kit should be stellar. (Most pump kits are pretty terrible, so this is about par for the course.) But all is not lost. The ends of the tubing actually fit into my kit I had been using with my Medela. Also, and this is a problem with most pump kits, most women would need to lean forward to get the milk to drop down when sitting upright. So, my Lactina kit had removable flanges which I promptly tossed and used the angled ones from Pumpin' Pal. (Buy those too.) Also, I bought a pump adapter kit that worked with the Playtex bottles I was using so I could pump directly into the drop-in liners. (Cleaner that way, eventually the bottles will get gross no matter what you do.) -If you are not using their backflow valves, you need to pay attention to your tubing. I am not, and have gotten some moisture into one of the tubes on the end. I just blow it out with a hair dryer in a couple of seconds. The tubing is nothing special and you could easily replace it with something from the hardware store if you needed to. It would also be pretty easy to jerryrig the tubing from another pump kit, which I may do so I can attach the backflow valves.
The "cons" I listed here may seem like a lot, but to me it wasn't enough that I would take away a star. I've had it for two weeks and I love it, and haven't noticed a drop in supply. I'll update this review if anything changes, but I don't see that happening.
So go buy this pump. Or put it on your registry or wishlist. You won't be sorry.

Updated 10/16/13 -A couple more product links for all the parts I'm using with my cobbled-together homemade kit. You really don't NEED anything but the angled flanges and hands-free pumping bra, but if you wanted to piece something together that's a bit more user-friendly, here are the links: Medela Personal Fit Breastsheild Connectors - Medela 87071 Medela Valves & Membranes (Set of 1)
UPDATE 10/28/13- I've gone back to work and am taking this pump back and forth. I just put it in a small tote bag I had at home. I made two pump kits so I can leave one at home and one in my office at work and all I take back and forth is the pump. That probably wasn't necessary, but I probably would have ended up forgetting something one day so this was my way to make sure that didn't happen. Pump is awesome, and nobody can hear it when I answer the phone. The doctor in the office next to me is pumping as well, and you can hear her pump down the hall... -Also, I finally attached the backflow valves. I basically just cut the tubing and attached one piece to either side of the valve. It's a small challenge to get the tubing on the large side, but it does fit. Now I can still stick the end of the tubing into my homemade Medela kit and it works great and I don't need to worry about moisture getting into my pump.
If you've got questions, post 'em and I'll do my best to answer! (I should probably just make a video...)
Best pump ever (only pump I've used but only one I will ever need!) I am a full time working mom. I was lucky to get 13 weeks of maternity leave. I was concerned when I had my baby because I have breast implants (below muscle). But after birth (via csection), my baby latched and we were in business.
I breastfed only for first 3 weeks. Then I introduced 1-2 pumps a day. I didn't get much-but that was expected. Around the 5-6week mark I began pumping and stashing more frequently. By the time I went back to work at 13 weeks pp I had 800oz in my deep freezer.
My baby is now 23 weeks old and I have 1750oz in my deep freezer and she still nurses. This pump is AMAZING! It's nice to have the mobility of a rechargeable battery Bc I can pump and do chores and even pump in the backseat of a car while someone else is driving.
I have been separated from my baby for up to 20 hours and this pump is amazing! I would highly recommend to anyone over any of the other brands. I have even convinced some of my second time moms to switch to this pump (since it is free w insurance) and they have loved it and thanked me a 100times over.
The attached pictures are of my frozen milk stash and the other is a picture of my morning pump (after breastfeeding my baby girl).
Cheers and happy baby feeding!
I purchased this pump out of pocket and then mailed receipt and reimbursement application to tricare and they returned my money 100%. So worth it because if you go through a retailer they will only give you the S2 (which is not rechargeable).
Wow. Just wow. Why did I not hear of this pump sooner? Comfortable, portable, lightweight, oh- and more than double the milk!! Seriously, it is almost a crime that the insurance companies just give out inferior pumps when this is available. I was concerned when returning to work with my second baby that I would not be able to produce enough milk. With my first, I pumped like 6 times a day at work to make enough with my Medela PISA. Now, those worries are gone. Totally gone! The proof is in the pictures. 10 mins of total comfort and quiet on the Spectra vs 20 mins of loud wrenching and pulling on the PISA.

There are sure highlights that can make pumping milk a delight rather than a task.

Suction settings: you'll need a pump that mirrors a child's characteristic sucking cycle as close as could be expected under the circumstances. This implies you need a pump that offers two modes. Disappointment mode â quick and shallow at first to get the milk streaming. What's more, articulation mode â slow and profound to get the most milk.
Flexible speed, mood, and suction: adjustable settings will empower you to locate what's generally agreeable for you.
Memory: this component permits you to store your preferred settings in the pump's memory so you never need to tinker with the controls each and every time.
Conveying case: on the off chance that you intend to utilize the pump away from home, you'll need something to convey it in that is cautious. A few cases highlight a cooling compartment that permits you to securely store your milk for some other time.
Vehicle connector: in the event that you need to pump in a hurry, at that point this is a convenient element. Remember that pumping may occupy you from driving so perhaps you can utilize it as a traveler.
Weight: in the event that you're continually going to be moving between various points, at that point carrying around an overwhelming breast pump won't work out well for you. Indeed, even a light one that gauges just 5 pounds could feel substantial after some time. In case you will be in a hurry for the duration of the day, it's ideal to get the most lightweight alternative you can discover.
Shouldn't something be said about Warranty?
Other than manual pumps, all breast pumps utilize an engine to get things moving. This implies there are moving parts that may separate. At any rate get a pump that accompanies a one-year guarantee. Longer terms commonly mean better quality and solidness.
Shield size: the shield or spine is that round thing that you put on your breast for pumping. You have to ensure that you have the correct size. On the off chance that it's excessively little, it will make your breasts sore.
youtube
No BPA: portions of your breast pump, if not all, are made out of plastic. To protect you and your child, ensure that you get a model that has a "No BPA" name.
Consider the possibility that You're Still Not Sure Which one is Best for you and Your Baby.
It's anything but difficult to get befuddled or hesitant with regards to settling on unbelievably significant choices, particularly if it's something that worries a friend or family member. Try not to get worried about not realizing what to do. Lactation specialists are wherever nowadays. Discover time to meet with one to assist you with your choice procedure and find solutions to any inquiries you may even now have.

Selecting Breast Pumps: Tips and Considerations
If youâre a first-time newborn mum, you will discover the joy and wonders of owning a breast pump. This device helps mums provide food for little ones while saving effort and time. With a quick pumping session, milk becomes available readily for your baby so you can go on a date, finish chores, or do light work.
A good breast pump expresses milk efficiently. Eonian Care lists things to check when you consider buying a breast pump.
Frequency and Purpose
An electric pump saves more time and effort compared to a manual one. This device is excellent for mothers with a busy daily routine. There are also intelligent models in the market, such as the Eonian Care Smart Double Electric Pump that lets you express milk on both breasts simultaneously with multiple speeds. These work like a charm, especially when your supply is low.Â
Price
Manual pumps may be your cheapest option; however, electric pumps are cost-effective. Manual pumps may not cost you much, but theyâre tiring and time-consuming to use. With electric pumps, youâll get more energy and time to finish income-generating and valuable tasks.
Hygiene
We recommend selecting a closed system pump. This kind has a barrier between the motor kit and collection area and keeps outside air from contaminating your milk. Open systems donât have such and can cause mould growth. Plus, theyâre not easy to clean.
The Eonian Care pump set has medical-grade parts and a patented closed-system design and is certified by The Therapeutic Goods Administration Australia and European Medical Electrical Equipment Standards IEC-60601.
Operation
Pumping shouldnât feel like a chore. Make this routine easier by selecting smart, portable, lightweight, easy to operate, and not noisy pumps. It would help if you considered pumps that let you express milk anywhere easily.
Comfort
It is essential to have flanges that fit well to prevent discomfort and painâsuctioned nipples experience friction with the plastic that may cause skin abrasion leading to infection. To avoid this scenario, we recommend choosing pumps with flanges of various sizes.
The Eonian Care Smart Double Electric Breast Pump has two standard-size 24mm breast shields. If they donât fit you well, you may want to check out two bigger sizes and one smaller size shields which are also readily available.
Function and Effectivity
Your pumps should work efficiently, so we recommend selecting pumps from reputable brands such as Eonian Care. Read the labels and check out the pumpâs suction strength so you can determine what you can work with.
Eonian Care pumps are easy to operate and give you easy adjustment of pumping modes and suction strength. With just one touch, you can quickly switch from one mode (5-phase massage mode) to another (9-phase expression mode).
Noise
Avoid having noisy devices as they can disrupt your babyâs sleep. Experts recommend electric pumps with a decibel rating of 50 and below, which are quiet even when used inside nurseries, bedrooms, and public spaces.
If you havenât found one yet, you might want to consider Eonian Care Electric Pump Set with its noise rating below 45 decibels.
Durability
Donât skimp on your budget, especially for your little one. Quality and durability must always be your top priority. Pumps from dependable brands such as Eonian Care cover you with years of replacement warranty.
