Last Sunday, 7th April, people gathered in Chota Lucknow, aka Matiabruz in Kolkata to pay tributes to Begum Hazrat Mahal, a freedom fighter and a contemporary of Rani Lakshmi Bai who fought against the British in 1857 to save Awadh, only to be forgotten and die in exile in Nepal. This year marks the 140 death of the valiant who came from humble origins and whose date of birth still remains a mystery. At a time when gender roles are defined, this couple might have been the ultimate thing that changed the status quo. Here you have a king, a nawab leaving his own kingdom just to save his people from the irony of war. Here's a king ( Nawab Wajid Ali Shah) who dables in art and culture and defines it life no other. And here is a queen who writes fiery poems and takes up arms , trying to save her state from a foreign rule. A near complete Ying Yang couple who are contrast of each other and whose personalities are mirror images of each other. This I think is a true essence of gender fluidity and vitality. Khidirpore - a dock area, a river area has been a seafarers region and because of this it faces the burnt of World War 2 attacks. This seafarers church built by the British navy bears testimonial to that. It's housed inside a school & college and is one of the earliest British churches of India. It was an army orphanage school which served as medical center during world war 2. Seamen's tales are etched all over this quaint church which some beautiful epitaph writings. This is how imagined churches back in time - old, comforting and desolate. The beautiful tipu sultan mosque in ekbalpur, Khidirpore built by Tipu's son's daughter. A stark change from mosque built by men. There are a no. of tipu sultan's mosques in Calcutta which are structurally similar mirror images but subtly different. Strange how an exiled king and his descendants have mapped this country - from the far south to the east. The Mysore king born in Devanahalli fort area, near Bangalore has its descendants flowing to this part of the land. Much like the Bengalis of today who are migrating to his land in search of better employability. The iconic Swadhin Bharat Hindu Hotel is the place we end our Rodda Arms Heist Walk with a scrumptious meal. This place and the lane has links to revolutionaries of the time. Many of them including the Bose visited here. The owner of the restaurant played a crucial role in helping the revolutionaries from the police.
