Trading Places in Nicaragua: 7 Questions for Peta & Ben
Tumblr media
Trading Places is all about experiencing how people live around the world. Through travel, learning, and discovering traditions, cultures, and the beauty of our diverse planet — we try to walk in another person’s shoes for a bit, to step into their lives however briefly — so that we can connect with others, and let that inspire our own lives and bring more joy into our worlds.
Tumblr media
When I travel, a large part of the time I stay in other people’s homes — usually through home exchange, but also by house sitting, Airbnb, independent rentals, etc. One of the things I love about traveling this way is that I’m not discovering a new place so much through the eyes of a visitor from some generic chain hotel — I’m actually trading places with them, getting a little taste of what their daily life and home town is all about. It allows me to really experience a place more like a local, and I love both the interesting people I meet this way, and the”insiders’ look” into a place that I get. If you’re interested in learning more about how I do this, and how it enables me to travel for free, check out my e-course on it! And if you use the code TRADINGPLACES when you enroll, you’ll get a 20% discount! A few years ago, my partner Keith and I did a home exchange in Granada, Nicaragua and stayed in the lovely, eco-friendly bamboo home of artist Peta Kaplan and her husband, strategist Ben Sandzer-Bell. Because this was the second home of Peta and Ben — and they lived right down the street — we actually got to meet them, got to know each other, hang out with them some and go to dinner together, etc. It was a great way to discover both Granada and these incredibly interesting people, who we've stayed friends with in the intervening years.
Tumblr media
Peta Kaplan and Ben Sandzer-Bell Peta and Ben have since moved to Sri Lanka, and I took the chance to catch up with them to ask them 7 questions to let the Trading Places Village get to know them, too! So let me introduce you into Peta's and Ben's world: Peta is an artist who was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, while Ben was born in Paris and grew up between Paris and Los Angeles. Trading Places: What is a “typical day” like for you? Peta and Ben: We are woken up by the chorus of bird calls early in the morning, as our little house is in  a rural area that used to be jungle, and still has some portions of wildness in addition to rice paddies which attract all sorts of birds. We then motor scooter to a morning yoga class near the beach, about a ten minute ride away. After yoga we chill at one of our favorite cafes where we catch up on emails and work accompanied by coffee and breakfast. Ben is involved in a project to help the Sri Lankan government acquire planes for humanitarian missions for UN peacekeeping operations. Peta has the job of finding us home exchanges for upcoming travel adventures. On our way home we stop at any one of the fruit stalls alongside the street where we buy a two day supply of tropical fruits. At home we continue with work or house related activities, keeping a home in the jungle requires a lot of maintenance. Late afternoon we love to head out to the beach with our snorkels for a swim with the fish and turtles in the Indian ocean. By 6 pm the sun has set and we are usually back home settling in for a quiet night of movies and/ or blog writing.
Tumblr media
One of Peta and Ben's favorite local fruit stalls at home in Sri Lanka Trading Places: What are a few of your favorite places to eat in your home city? Peta and Ben: We love to eat at POONIES in Fort Galle for its fresh and creative salads and café vibe; BEDSPACE in Unawatuna beach for its grilled meats, fresh fish and curries; and SHACK BEACH which offers a range of delicious breakfast options right on the sand in a secluded beach near Galle. But frankly, the best food in town is in our own home as our housekeeper, Nilu, loves to cook traditional Sri Lankan curries and never tires of offering us new varieties to try. Trading Places: What is your favorite thing about your home, and why? Peta and Ben: Favorite thing about our home is how nestled in nature it is. At night the forest comes to life and we hear all sorts of frogs and crickets but rarely any sounds from other humans. We can watch monkeys swing from tree to tree from our bedroom, and sometimes we see them from our bathtub in our garden bathroom. Nothing beats that! And if that’s not enough, a 2-minute walk to the rice fields always delivers beautiful bird sightings.
Tumblr media
Trading Places: What do you do to recharge or practice self-care? Peta and Ben: We have been practicing yoga together since 2000, and always incorporate yoga in our day to day lives. In fact, I (Peta) fell in love with a particular yoga shala with its magnificent views over the jungle, and decided right there and then to find a place to live within walking distance (just as when we lived in Granada, Nicaragua, and lived directly across from a yoga studio). Ben “did his thing” and within hours I had several candidate homes to look at. We’ve lived within walking distance of this yoga shala ever since. One of the benefits of living in Asia is that massage is both so widely available and so inexpensive. While massage is marketed in the west as a hedonistic endeavor, Asia has considered massage, the movement of chi, an integral part of health maintenance. That is one health lessons that we try to put into practice as often as possible, ideally weekly. But our true “recharging” power plant, is the sea. Its energy is palpable and every visit to the beach reminds us how  grateful we are to live so close to an energy force, always available, always free, always a health improving experience.
Tumblr media
Peta in Bagan, Myanmar Trading Places: What is one of your favorite places you've ever travelled to, and why? Peta: Bagan, Myanmar, spending meditative time in the ancient valley of Bagan which has a plethora of small Buddhist temples scattered in one large golden, quiet valley. Ben: Hoi An, Vietnam primarily for the street food  (but also the gorgeous architecture, infinite possibilities for scenic scooter rides and people’s infinite sense of humor ….)  We rarely eat in restaurants when we are there. We go from one street vendor to another, discovering the amazing range of culinary delights that comprise Vietnamese cuisine. Trading Places: Tell us one fact about you that might be surprising, fun, or quirky. Peta and Ben: We are both animal lovers and no matter where we go we befriend them. Be it a calf that Ben snuggled with for an hour in a field in Central Vietnam, to a dog that Peta rescued on the streets in Dominican Republic. We always take the time to connect with animals and where we can, improve their lives. For example, in Northern Sri Lanka we visited a city where there are groups of large wild donkeys roaming the streets looking for food. We bought pounds of carrots and went around on our motor scooter giving hungry donkeys a treat.

Sunny days in the south of Sri Lanka
Tumblr media
Finally, we made it to our main destination – Sri Lanka (and we do mean finally, our already late flight was delayed so that we arrived at our hotel in Sri Lanka at 2am local time, 4:30am Malaysian time, with one groggy 8 year old and one veeeeeery grumpy 5 year old). Our immediate impression was of the friendly people, with our hosts happy and helpful in the middle of the night when we arrived, and also when bringing us a delicious breakfast the next morning. In fact, so far in Sri Lanka we have found the people to be really lovely and genuinely wanting to just say hello or help you out – even the ones who are supposed to be selling you things. Children of all ages are called “babies”, which our kids were initially affronted by but are now completely used to, as well as the affectionate pats on the head or being whisked away for extra treats.
Tumblr media
But back to the beginning, after our brief sleep at a guest house near the airport, our driver Victor picked us up to begin the first part of our Sri Lankan adventures. We drove through bustling streets and traditional Asian traffic (the largest vehicle gets right of way, through an intricate system of beeps, even if you are on the wrong side of the road) to reach Galle, a Dutch fort city perched on a rocky outcrop.
Tumblr media
Days later, we realised that Galle, even though it was situated in between a number of tourist beaches overflowing with sun-baking white people, was actually the preferred holiday destination of many Sri Lankans.
Tumblr media
We were often the only Westerners in amongst the courting couples meandering along the magnificent fort walls, kids playing cricket on the shaded grass, or families swimming in the protected shallows off (rocky!) beaches.
Tumblr media
The beauty of travelling with kids is that you don’t feel like the odd one out, as they make friends wherever they go – an inflatable ball is literally all you need to bridge cultural or linguistic divides.
Galle was also our Christmas location – Santa thankfully chose fairly lightweight and small presents – and an untraditional Christmas day, the highlights of which were fort jumping, a tuk-tuk ride, and Christmas beers
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After Galle we spent a few days beach hopping between Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna and Mirissa.
Tumblr media
Our Aussie beach-loving children were totally at home in the waves, and had to be dragged out after a couple of hours each time.
Tumblr media
Mum and dad weren’t too disappointed with this, given the prolific cheap beer and cocktails available at the beach restaurants. It’s a hard life.
Tumblr media
We weren’t completely lazy on the beach though, we did take a local fishing boat out for some snorkelling – Felix is the best to snorkel with, he almost wets himself every time he sees a fish until he has pointed it out to you – and Scott did a scuba dive at a wreck just off the coast. But pretty much lazy.
In the last couple of days on the south coast we made the most of having a driver to see some local sights. These included: a turtle hatchery, where they assist with turtle release and injured turtles;
Tumblr media
a cinnamon plantation, which gave us an insight into the massive human labour that goes into all the cinnamon we consume;
Tumblr media
a tea plantation where we tasted 40 different kinds of tea, including Virgin White Tea – still only produced at that plantation, although not any longer by virgins with gold scissors, sadly. The machines they did use for tea production looked like something from the 50s, but still seemed to be going strong, although it’s a mystery what most of them do.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On our last day in the south, we broke up a long day of driving towards the wildlife parks by stopping at the Mulkirigala rock caves. The children dealt admirably with the 585 steps (Felix counted) and intimidating monkeys, to visit some amazing rock murals and reclining buddhas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally, one thing we have been loving a lot about Sri Lanka - the food! Especially hoppers, rice and curry, and delicious new treats!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And a few parting shots of the reality of travelling with kids so far :) We don’t have a photo of the various scenic locations they have been in time out, or the cute games they play instead of looking at a magnificent view, but it all comes with the territory!

Planning a trip to Sri Lanka? Check out these drool-worthy spots & awesome things to do!
Thinking of Visiting Sri Lanka?
Let us just start by saying, you can’t go wrong 🙂 Settled beautifully in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is a wonderful destination for virtually any traveler. If you’re looking to relax by soaking up some rays and dipping your toes in the sand, Sri Lanka is perfect.
Perhaps you’re more interested in waking up at the crack of dawn to watch the jungle come to life as you roam around in a safari jeep? Sri Lanka is for you.
Maybe you want to check out the hustle and bustle of different cities or see what it’s like to ride through amazing scenery on a jam-packed train… head over to Sri Lanka!
If you’re an avid hiker keen on checking out remote places, amazing scenery, and trying your hand at speaking Sinhalese or Tamil.
Perhaps you’re interested in experiencing what local culture is like, staying in a homestay, or visiting museums and workshops, hop on a plane to Sri Lanka! What are you waiting for?
20 Photos of Sri Lanka To Inspire Your Next Travel Adventure
1). Coconuts
When you think of beaches, tropical climates, and vacations coconuts are bound to come to mind. Sri Lanka is full of these delicious hydrating fruits. You can pick them up virtually anywhere in the country for a refreshing drink!
2). Relaxing Days & Beautiful Beaches
With 832 miles (1,340 km) of coastline, it’s no surprise that the tropical island of Sri Lanka is home to some amazing beaches! From Galle to Unawatuna and Mirissa to Arugam Bay (and plenty others) you’ll find the perfect beach for you.
Sri Lanka is home to beaches that are remote and others that are built up. Home to beaches with strong currents where you wouldn’t want to swim and ones with smaller waves. There are also beautiful beaches for lounging or beaches that are better explored via boat rides.
3). Murals
Across cities and towns, you’ll find artwork that makes you stop in your tracks and say “wow”. Some of our favorites, like this peacock, are found in Arugam Bay. Spend a day “mural hunting” and see how many amazing works of art you can find.
4). Mother Nature
You can simply sit on a beach… or you can get in on the action. We sat in small pools of water and watched waves crash over us (keeping safety in mind) one day. It was a fun way to marvel at the mist floating above our heads and take in the beauty of Mother Nature.
It also produced some great moments of laughter as we got soaked time and time again!
5). Safari Adventures
When one first thinks of safaris, perhaps a list of African countries comes to mind. And they should – they’re on our bucket list!
That said, Sri Lanka has some safari adventures of its own that you won’t want to miss. They are also usually a fraction of the price- great for getting started 🙂
6). Tuk Tuk Adventures
Many Asian countries have Tuk Tuks or something similar – and Sri Lanka’s no different. When we weren’t galavanting around on the sprawling train system we had fun adventures in these decked out carts on wheels.
Hop in the back and get ready for an adventure as you drive past rolling waves and through beautiful jungly hills.
7). School’s Out For The Day
Take a visit to the former Dutch Fort Town, Galle. You can spend an entire day, or days, walking the Fort walls, and the cute streets and alleyways. Galle’s historic architecture is beautiful.
Plus, you’ll come across hundreds of students in white uniforms headed to the beach to swim at the end of the day. Prepare to smile and wave! Ayubowan is the term used for greetings if you want to say something other than “hello” while you’re here.
8). Waterfalls: Lovers Leap
Talk about breathtaking beauty! Sri Lanka is home to some amazing beaches… but also some magnificent waterfalls.
Heading inland to Nuwara Eliya – which was not on our original itinerary – was the best decision we could have made. We spent hours walking to this waterfall and enjoying it once we arrived. (You could also opt for a Tuk Tuk to take you part way and make the walk much shorter).
9). Tea Factories
Sri Lanka is well known in the tea world for its amazing teas. In fact, tea production happens to be one of the main sources of foreign exchange for the country!
There are a variety of tea factories scattered among the highlands. We spent an afternoon touring Halpe Tea in Ella learning all about the tea making process. No photos allowed inside the factory… so we took this one outside!
10). Surf
Whether you’re a seasoned surfer or a newbie just learning, Sri Lanka has beaches and waves for everyone!
We’re definitely on the newbie end of the scale but had a blast learning and taking a class with Excellent Surf School at “Peanut Farm” just outside of Arugam Bay.
Fun Fact…  wild elephants occasionally walk onto this beach and dip their toes in the sand! Talk about a fascinating sight to see.
11). Fitness Outdoors
TJ swears his legs were up straight in this headstand… but we have photo proof that says otherwise!
Whether you’re a fitness fan of yoga, HIIT, running, circuit training or another kind, Sri Lanka has plenty of beautiful places to get your sweat on outside. Our favorite was the beach!
Just make sure to protect your skin and slather on some sunscreen 😉
12). Sunrise Over The Jungle
Picture this: sunrise over the quite jungle as the sun pokes up above the horizon, birds begin to chirp, and the entire sky is illuminated.
We opted to go on safari in the less crowded Udawalawe National Park (as opposed to Yala) and had an amazing time. Watching sunrise over the jungle is a site we’ll never forget. You can hire a private safari jeep for the day from your guesthouse and set off on a grand adventure!
13). Beautiful Boats
While staying in Arugam Bay we ventured down the beach on multiple occasions and marveled at the sheer number of fishing boats that line the shore.
They head out very early in the morning and return before most travelers are even out of bed. They’re often painted bright colors and look beautiful against the sand.
14). Hanging Out Of Moving Trains
If you research some of the most famous train rides in the world – particularly in Asia – Sri Lanka is bound to come up.
Most famous is the ride from Kandy to Ella… but it is packed with people. And, unless you buy tickets well in advance you may be standing for the entire 8-hour journey. It can get tiring!
Even so, if you’re on a less crowded train and can reach the doors you can spend your entire ride hanging out of the train as the landscape zooms by! One of the most eventful train rides we’ve ever had!
15). Island Adventures
As if being on a beautiful tropical island weren’t enough… you can walk from mainland Miriss Beach, across a sandbar, to a tiny island jutting out of the surf. How beautiful!
It’s a great place to watch the tide change, waves crash, and life take place on Mirissa beach.
16). Take In The View
We love taking in the scenery on beautiful beaches but sometimes it’s even more fun to admire them from a different vantage point.
Find a hill, check out a viewpoint on Maps.me and see what beauty is in store for you when you reach the top!
17). Marvel At Tea Fields
We already mentioned tea above, but check out these tea plants in the bottom left of the photo! They’re beautiful, especially when surrounded by other fields and a mountain landscape 🙂 We’re outdoor nature junkies and Sri Lanka took our breath away.
18). Sri Lanka’s Delicious Breakfast Trio
As foodies, meal preppers, and cooking fanatics we’re always thrilled to get to a new country. Why? Because we get to try new food!
Breakfasts in Sri Lanka are one of our favorites. Delicious roti paired with coconut sambal and dahl are the perfect way to start the day. Check out this favorite food and many of our other favorites!
19). Nine Arch Bridge
One of the most popular things to see while visiting Ella – the Nine Arch Bridge – will not disappoint.
Walk the railway from the train station, or take a jungle hike to arrive. We opted for the hike and were greeted with this magnificent view upon arrival.
An engineering wonder, this bridge was built with stone bricks and cement, but without steel!
20). Swing Off Into The Distance
There’s no doubt about it. Instagram has had a huge rise in popularity in the last few years. And, with this rise, has come the famous “Instagram worthy ” or “Most Instagramamble Places” for every traveler to find.
Look no further than beach swings in Sri Lanka. They dot beaches across the island and provide a great way to stay cool as you swing through the breeze. Just be prepared to pay a fee to hop on someone’s swing!
