i discovered your blog recently and it seems really fun... for requests could we please get a breadbug?
Gijinka #4
here comes Breadbug! She works as a waitress at her family's restaurant. She's well-meaning, but sometimes she may absentmindedly take people's plates before they're done eating! At least she often takes things left behind to the lost n' found?

The PNF-404 Phylogenetic Tree
A bit of a different post from the usual, as I have been very hyped for Pikmin 4! Here's my speculative phylogenetic tree for most of the creatures in the Pikmin series. It is a bit more cautious than an actual phylogenetic tree, so there are a lot of soft polytomies (ideally every branch split should only have two children), but I digress.
Edit
It seems that Tumblr's compression did some nasty work on my post, so I'm gonna leave here a link to my phylogenetic tree in case anyone would like to see it in its full glory.
Here are also all the notes on the image in case anyone needs those too:
Author's Notes
Updated as of the Pikmin 4 Demo.
Icons taken from the Pikipedia and Pikmin games.
Fonts used are “Pikmin Font” by TheAdorableOshawott and “Dimbo” by Jayvee Enaguas.
Species with multiple scientific names
The Red Bulborb, Empress Bulblax and Bulborb Larvae are all explicitly different forms of the same species, as is the case in their Japanese technical name.
The Spotty Bulbear and Dwarf Bulbear are both explicitly different forms of the same species, as is the case in their Japanese technical name.
The Baldy Long Legs and Hairy Long Legs are explicitly stated to be the same species.
The Centipare and adult Centipare have completely different scientific name and family.
Incorrect scientific name (according to Japanese family name)
Despite being in the Breadbug family, the Fiery Dwarf Bulblax, has the Oculus genus instead of Pansarus. This is corrected here.
Despite not being in the Blowhog family, the Tusked Blowhog shares its Sus genus.
Despite not being in the Mandiblards family, the Shooting Spiner shares its Himeagea genus.
Despite not being in the Flint Beetle family, the Glint Beetle shares its Pilli genus.
The Floaterbie family is supposed to be the same family as the Flutterbie family in the original Japanese.
The Crysanthemum family is considered the same as the Dandelion family in the original Japanese.
Changes due to assumed consistency
All Wollyhop names have been updated to match the Wolpole's European name, which was standardized in Pikmin 4.
Similarly, All mentions of the “frodendum" specific name have been updated to match Wolpole's frondiferorum name in Pikmin 4.
The Red Spectralid has a different genus (Fenestrati) than every other Spectralid. This is likely a mistake is corrected here.
Despite not all Candypop Buds being present in the Pikmin 4 Demo, it is assumed they are all now considered the same species in the Piklopedia.
Scientific name in the wrong order
The Fiery Young Yellow Wollyhop has its “volcanus" subspecies name incorrectly placed in front of its scientific name. This is corrected here.
The Queen Shearwig, Speargrub and Sheargrub all have their genus incorrectly placed as their specific name. This is corrected here.
Incorrect use of real taxonomy terms
The genus Chilopoda of the Centipare is actually the real world class of the centipedes.
The genus Stauromedusae of the Medusal Slurker is actually a real world order of cnidarians.
The specific name phytohabitans of the Leech Hydroe is actually a real world genus of bacteria.
The genus of the Common Glowcap is actually the real world kingdom of fungi.
Inconsistencies within English localizations
The Coppeler has the Scarpanica genus added in the American localization.
The Armurk has different scientific names: Tegoparastacoidea reptantia (US) and Scalobita rotunda (EU).
Other Notes
The Caustic Dweevil was renamed to Hydro Dweevil and its scientific name to Mandarachnia aquadis in the Switch port of Pikmin 2.
Although the Puffstool has no confirmed family, it shares a genus with the Puffstalk, implying they are likely related.
Missing creatures: Mamuta, Smoky Progg, Blubbug, Puffy Blubbug, Electric Cottonade, Red Blubblimp, Seedbagger, Stuffed Bellbloom.
Unplaceable creatures (extradimensional and/or possibly entirely artificial life forms): Waterwraith, Plasm Wraith.

Eggtober 10th 2023
"Wisps": Hot and Sour Soup
(Clip Studio Paint, Gouache brush, Gouache Blender, some pencil brush detailing, circle tool for the bowl. 18 colors. About an hour.)
Cousin of the Egg Drop soup. I think the eggy wisps are properly referred to as "egg flowers" and that's cute as hell.
Anyway, hot and sour soup is that, only "what if we made it spicy and sour and also added more stuff?" One of my family's favorites. And a great way to eat tofu. Borderline vegan and tasty as hell. 10/10, would recommend.
Leaving it pleasantly warm for @lady-quen's breadbugs. Not hot. We don't want to cook the poor creatures. If a breadbug swims in your soup, does it become a dumpling bug? Or a noodle bug? We must explore this for science.
As always, proud to present many eggy dishes to @quezify on this lovely Eggtober. Enjoy!
Edit: Forgot the speedpaint. You can see I was really inspired by the blue of that bowl.

Pikmin 2 Personality Quiz Translation
quick disclaimer: I am not especially fluent in Japanese, I'm just some shmuck trying their best, so take these translations with a grain of salt. especially since there's some i'm really unsure of here.
feel free to play along with this link! or just scroll all the way down to the "results" section at the bottom if you just want to see the descriptions
Thank you for Accessing [This Page]
Ahh, thank you! You came right away. I'm so happy.
Hey... If you don't mind... I could examine your personality!
View Content
(note: there's some usage of katakana in the paragraph where it typically wouldn't be, notably for the pronouns 'watashi' and 'anata', so I decided to bold those.)
Pikmin Personality Quiz
Q1: What is the most important thing in your life?
Friends
Money
Family
......
Myself
Q2: Of the following 5 colours, which do you prefer?
Red
Purple

My parents
My lover
My boss
Myself
There isn't anyone (None)
Q4: What word best describes your lifestyle?
Fearful
Perky

Q5: You're flying in a spaceship. What happens to you next?
I crash
I sleep
I explore an undiscovered planet
I fall
I go back home
(note: "I fall" could equally be "I fail". it's hard to say with so little context, but either way it's not good.)

No more than 1000 yen
No more than 10,000 yen
No more than 100,000 yen
More than that! I'm rich!

Q10: What's your favourite place?
Valley of Repose
Awakening Wood
Perplexing Pool
Wistful Wild
Inside the Onion
Q11: During a space trip, you're met with an accident, and end up shipwrecked on an uninhabited planet. What kind of planet is it?

Check your personality!
(note: if you click this button before answering all of the questions, you will get a popup saying "Q[earliest unanswered number] has not been entered.")
RESULTS
Your personality is [most like]...
The President.
Your strength is that you are honest about your feelings. Your energy as a leader is undefeatable.
However, you should maybe consider other people's feelings at least a little bit.
THIS → is the perfect partner for you!
Your perfect match is...
The President's wife.
She's straightforward about her feelings, more so than you.
She always toys with you.
However, that's because she believes in you.
→ Back
(note: I have absolutely zero confidence in that middle sentence.)
Your personality is [most like]...
Olimar.
A hard-working man who loves his family. He is popular among the Pikmin for his leadership.
However, he's a bit unlucky.
THIS → is the perfect partner for you!
Your perfect match is...
Olimar's wife.
No matter how destitute, she will always support you with great love.
There can be no secrets (such as a certain safe) between lovers or husband and wife.
You two can keep it together and not let the recession get to you.
→ Back
Your personality is [most like]...
Louie.
You're not so good at communication. People tend to misunderstand you, and have no idea what you're thinking.
Maybe you should voice your feelings more often?
THIS → is the perfect partner for you!
Your perfect match is...
Louie's nana.
Her narrow eyes make her look like she can't see anything. But trust me, she definitely sees the real you.
Even if it's hard, please indulge her as much as you can.
→ Back
(note: another really hard phrase to translate on the partner pages, yowch. this time, it was the last line of her description.)
Your personality is [most like]...
The Hocotate Ship.
On the outside, talkative to the point of being a blabbermouth.
But on the inside, actually a bit dry.
THIS → is the perfect partner for you!
Your perfect match is...
Mr. Beady Long Legs.
A strong personality that will really shake your heart. Whether it's out of fear or love, your heart will keep thumping.
Once you get over these feelings, a new you awaits...... Probably.
→ Back
(note: because "さん" is gender neutral, this could equally be Ms. Beady Long Legs. hocotate ship yuri, i GUESS.)
Your personality is [most like]...
The Pikmin.
Serious and hard-working. Your strong suit is cooperating with others. The type to thoroughly devote yourself.
But maybe you could assert yourself a little more?
THIS → is the perfect partner for you!
Your perfect match is...
Mr. Bulborb.
It will lead you with a WILD personality.
A big maw awaits you.
Please look forward to some wild kisses.
→ Back
(note: again, could be Ms. instead)
#Rambles Into The Void#Vesper's Translations#Pikmin#anyways i got the hocotate ship and idk how to feel about that

So it's pretty much confirmed that PNF-404 from Pikmin is Earth in the distant future. Any thoughts on what the native creature enemies are descended from? I hc Bulborbs as some kind of derived gastropod that convergently evolved a pair of vertebrate-like legs (since the Bulborb Larva is legless), and the Pikmin themselves as a composite organism between a highly-specialized social insect and a Cordyceps-like plant that, rather than being parasitic is instead mutualistic.
Most of the creatures aren’t too different from their inspiration so it’s pretty easy to tell what they are. The grubs and beetles are grubs and beetles, the clamclamps are clams, the wollywogs are frogs, the mites are mites, etc.
Others are just completely out there and impossible to truly tell what they are. Like the wraiths, mamuta, honeywisps, and the Longlegs and Gatling groink. The last two honestly feel like leftover biotechnology.
Some we’re actually told what they’re descended from or related to, which is also usually believable. So like the Hermit Crawmads being hermit crabs or the skitterleaf being a water strider.
The “Scarpanid” family I’d hesitantly call beetles.
The Goolix is just a giant amoeba, which isn’t too out there considering there are plenty of giant unicellular organisms IRL (algae, seaweed, slime molds getting ready to reproduce, Xenophyophores, etc).
Snagrets are likely very strange birds. They could be descended from any number of burrowing birds or even passerines, which make up 60% of all birds and owe their success partly to a genetic code that is predisposed towards speciation.
Blowhogs I’ve always been unsure of but the tusked blowhog in 4 indicates that they’re possibly pigs. While the tusked blowhog isn’t a true blowhog it could be a primitive close relative that lies just outside of true blowhogs. I think Porquillion could also be related.
Vehemoth seems like a weird aerial salamander.
The meerslug is probably descended from a fish of some kind. One that burrows.
Dweevils I’m not entirely sure on.
There’s so many pikmin enemies that I’d be here all day covering them so I’m just skipping to the Bulborbs.
I’ve mentioned that I love @just9art’s slugborb theory even if it had to handwave that breadbugs are canonically not too closely related to grubdogs. I also just love the artwork and am so sad that their renditions of the grubdogs are not real animals I can hold. However, Bulborbs and breadbugs are so nondescript that people have purposed that they’re possibly terrestrial mud skippers or anglers (specifically ones like handfish) and they all work. Some people think they’re frogs, and @aphid-kirby covered it in a series of YouTube videos. https://m.youtube.com/@fictionalbiology1921/featured
As for pikmin, I do think a lot of the mobile plants form a family, which includes pikmin. But pikmin themselves are very weird (from here on is spoilers for PIKMIN 4).
Pikmin seem to be composite organisms, but apparently they can also force horizontal gene transfer onto other organisms as seen in the bad end for pikmin 1. This is also a main plot point for the fourth game as the main antagonist is actually Olimar being pikminized. All of this means that pikmin might not even be a species in a traditional sense.
Speaking of spoilers for 4, the final boss is a giant dog like Oatchi and is heavily implied to be a feral version of the ancestor of Oatchi’s kind. Meaning that they might actually be earth canines. However, the various spacemen of the games are also said to have had these canine companions for a long time, which could also mean that Olimar and co aren’t actually aliens, but descendants of humans who took dogs with them to space. While they evolved to be tiny (just barely big enough for their inner ears to still work), they selectively bred their dogs to be like jerboas. Humanity has been away from home for so long they don’t even remember it.

last post reminded me i rlly need to write down/draw the list of fictional bug species in ada’s universe but i just keep fleshing out the Giant Terrestrial Isopods bc they’re the most fun. they’re called shed slaters and they’re literally just enormous foot long isopods that live in small family groups and love to show up in sheds and other storage units to eat food. despite this behavior they’re considered a blessing rather than a curse as they are essentially compost machines if you’re able to keep them happy enough to the point they stay, and building a proper environment with enough food of their own will convince them to stay out your food stores. some ppl keep them as pets, but most ppl keep them as semi domesticated livestock. they function a bit like bees in that they will just move on if they’re not cared for, and it’s a bad idea to force them to stay. it’s generally taboo or considered bad luck to kill or outright evict them, but discouraging them from moving in in the first place is fine.
ada has an accidental lone pet shed slater named breadbug, who she found one night face first just lost in the sauce in a bag of grain in her pantry. he’s mostly a nuisance but she keeps him bc he’s extremely friendly and she feels bad that he’s alone as they’re very social animals. they’re a good degree more intelligent than an actual real life isopod and have some amount of social complexity, and breadbug has adopted ada and her wife (and their birds) as his new group. hes basically a cat that can climb your walls to eat your drapes.
#boris has a family of a different species living in his root cellar and he loves them#only the best table scraps for the giant land crustaceans#i need to outline the other domestic species SO BAD bc I love making them#my fav is boris’ little pack-ungulate named cherry who is basically a goat sized hyracotherium that hates everyone but his son#and ada’s ‘quails’

No.1 The Dwarf Bulborb!
The dwarf bulborb, despite its appearance, is not actually a baby bulborb! They are infact, part of the breadbug family. Utilizing defensive mimicry, these little creatures avoid predation by mimicking their respective counterparts of the grub-dog family.
Bulborbs accept dwarfs to live near them, even protecting them. We don't know if it's because the Bulborbs see them as juveniles or as a smaller, weaker bulborb that needs protection.

Giant Breadbug
Pikmin 2
"This gargantuan species of the greater breadbug family has a torso so perfectly square that it almost seems like it was formed in a mold. For a brief period after birth, the giant breadbug competes for food with smaller breadbugs, but upon reaching maturity it seeks out much larger prey. This is the primary reason that two species with similar feeding habits can coexist in the same habitat. Hordes of Pikmin appear to pose the only plausible threat to this massive creature's life."

Creature - Dwarf Bulborb
Games - All of them!
Family - Why, the Grubdog family, of course!
The first little guy! And a little guy they are indeed! These fellas are small, and they are a member of the Grubdog family, along with Whiptounge bulborb. I feel bad for this guy.
...Wait a darn second! (Sorry for the obscene language) This is not a Bulborb, it's a member of the breadbug family! We've been tricked! Utterly tricked! Ah well. Well, what can this guy do? Well first of all, they can follow and chomp on Pikmin in close range. Rude, but understandable. I, too, would like to partake. Secondst, in Pikmin 1, it will screech if you bother it! Ow! This wakes up the larger Bulborb and I am frightened.
These guys sound impossible to beat! Well, do I have sad news for you. Throwing a Pikmin on it's back will kill the poor guy like a Super Mario Bros. For The NES Goomba!! Tragic.

Pikmin 4 Thoughts!!
Okay.. so first impressions are pretty crazy.. but..
The game looks amazing!!
It looks like you play as Koppians in this game! The Onions are like a Mix of the Old and New!
You can climb??
Treasures are back?? I know they were in Hey! Pikmin, but it is good to see them back!!
Now, pardon the pun, but Ice Pikmin look cool! Like Rock Pikmin, but.. Ice!! I used to be kinda obsessed with Ice, so this is certainty an amazing addition!! Seeing them freeze a Bulborb... are they the "Purples" of Pikmin 4?? The Bulborb also broke into nectar... Ultra Bitter as a Pikmin?? Also Freezing water?? Are you like.. Making Blue Pikmin cry from taking their use cases?? (They even have a "freeze meter")
No way.. They added a dog to Pikmin??? And I don't mean like Grubdogs.. They can also pull stuff, like a Breadbug?? Carry Weight of 10 too.. And they can swim while carrying your squad.. Blue Pikmin are crying.
Looks like you got 4 Captains this game!! I don't have too many comments on the squad yet though!
Now.. are those.. CAVES, I see? My Pikmin 2 eyes are excited... There's even a possibly new member of the Arachnorb family!! They look.. Groovy.
The Empress is back!! With the Larva too!!
Now.. Is that.... a... NIGHT MODE????
I will be very busy in July. Good luck getting my attention during that month!!

[ID: Brittany from Pikmin 3 stands next to a saddled red Bulborb with round pupils and blunt fangs. Next to them is a a wild Bulborb with slitted eyes and sharp fangs, with the caption “Pansarus pseudiculli russus: leaner, more muscular, sharper/more pronounced claws and teeth, aggressive towards Pikmin.” A blue arrow with the word “Domestication” on it points to a domesticated Bulborb with goat-like pupils, rounded teeth, black spots, and a generally rounder build. The caption reads “Pansarus pseudoculli domesticus: Lower eyestalks, rounder body, more similar to other breadbugs, blunt teeth, connected nostrils, neutral towards Pikmin, can be hybrids of other members of the breadbug family.”

Name: Breadbug
Debut: Pikmin
Hello my dearest enemy enthusiasts! Welcome back to Funky Friday, where we post about things that aren’t from Mario, twice a month! And let me raise you a question: Mario, Zelda, Pico Pets.... What do these all have in common? Why, they were all born from the brilliant mind of Mr. Shigeru Miyamoto, give or take one! So it’s only fair we shine the spotlight on another of his brainchildren... Pikmin!
And Pikmin has a LOT of funny enemies. Silly creatures in all shapes and sizes! I could hardly pick one... but I picked the Breadbug, because it’s so funny to look at. If you haven’t looked at it yet, take a moment to scroll up and do so!
There we go. Wasn’t that funny? It is absolutely worth a chortle. Hoo hoo!
The Breadbug is a sneaky little fellow- they like to take things, and drag them back into their den! Treasures, pellets, corpses... as long as they can carry it! As the player, it is also your objective to take things, and this obviously poses an inconvenience to you, so what will you do? You gotta wrestle for it!
Or rather, your Pikmin have to wrestle for it. It’s a dangerous game of tug of war! Should your Pikmin get dragged into the Breadbug’s den, they’ll die instantly! But with enough troops, you can overpower this wheaty fiend and drag it to your Onion instead... When that happens, the Onion will try to suck it up, and the poor Breadbug will smack its head against the top. Well, serves it right!
In fact, that’s probably the most effective method of dealing with them, since the Breadbug’s thick hide protects it from most attacks... and makes them look like a bread roll! Have I mentioned that? It is just so silly. Pikmin really knows how to strike a balance between realistic and whimsical, and I love it so!
This image is labelled Adorable_Breadbug.png on Pikipedia, and I appreciate it very much.
Why, the Breadbug is so silly, you could easily forget they’re the namesake of a family of enemies, the breadbug family! Yup, Pikmin has an entire fictional taxonomy, and yes it’s an absolute delight. For example, the common Breadbug’s scientific name is Pansarus gluttonae!
But strangely, most members of the breadbug family are in fact... Bulborbs! Specifically Dwarf Bulborbs. You know Bulborbs, the common (and adorable) enemies with similarly stumpy legs? Turns out Dwarf Bulborbs aren’t at all related to the large Spotted Bulborbs from the grub-dog family! They just happen to be Breadbug-like creatures who evolved exactly like them. It’s absurd! I love it!
Fret not! If bread is what you seek, take a gander at the Giant Breadbug! This image is a lot smaller, so you’ll just have to trust me on the fact they’re giant. But this time, they look not like a roll, but a whole loaf of bread! And I’ve got to say, that’s some nice looking bread. I... want to eat it. A little bit. Is that strange? Either way, Giant Breadbugs are technically considered bosses, but they really just act like regular Breadbugs... they don’t even get a boss theme! They're called Pansarus gigantus, by the way.
Last but definitely not least, Hey! Pikmin introduces the Crumbug, which I believe is just the best name anything has ever had. I hope the localization team was real proud of that one! And also...it’s adorable! So tiny and bite-sized, and so tempting to pop a few of these into my mouth. You wouldn’t judge me, right?
The Crumbug doesn’t really act like a Breadbug, but more like a typical first platformer enemy, an easy foe with a simple pattern. Why they didn’t use Dwarf Bulborbs for this role is beyond me, but do you think I’ll complain?
This post has reached its end, and I genuinely am a little hungry for bread. Louie’s culinary Piklopedia entry describes the Breadbug as “bland and unimaginative”, and the Giant Breadbug as “flavorless”, but I am willing to believe he is just a bread hater! I won't let him crush my dreams of eating a Breadbug, no matter how long I need to wait for the post-apocalypse!
...I need to calm down. Weird enemies are my friends, not food! What’s come over me? I’ll see you all in the next post, which will hopefully be a non-edible Mario enemy! Ta-ta!

okay i know youre being silly but genuinely? yeah, most pikmin enemies are canonically edible. there's nothing said about the crumbug's edibility in specific, but there ARE such notes about its close relatives, the breadbug and giant breadbug
unfortunately, neither of them seem to be very tasty, despite their names and appearances.
then again, the dwarf bulborb, orange dwarf bulborb, and snow bulborb DO seem to be pretty tasty, despite being part of the breadbug family (and NOT the grub-dog family, like true bulborbs)
so who knows, maybe crumbugs are delicious. we'll never know unless it appears in a game that isn't hey! pikmin...
