I think I once teared up when I was writing a break-up scene with my original OTP, Braxous and Reluz. I still have it floating around here somewhere but it is quite old (and ridiculously long... like 10k words haha

For a little backstory about these characters; Braxous and Reluz are from the Tales of Ozoarth saga; a huge series with multiple ensemble casts with stories that take place across multiple years and countries. Braxous is from Izuktia; or what is left of it. Izuktia fell and a new country named New Izuktia rose in its place. The fall of the country occured before he was borne, however, but he was borne into the cult-like remains of Izuktia. He did eventually escape a violent upbringing and went to The Kiniarth, the country west of Izuktia.

Reluz has a similar tragic backstory. She hails from The Isles of Arthus, a huge collection of massive islands housing different city-states that are at odds with an attempted central government trying to wrangle them together under one banner. She lived in a smaller tribe with her family, but her tribe was destroyed by a larger and more violent one. She escaped with her mother at a young age and eventually they both fled to The Kiniarth as well as refugees.

The two met in a hospital; Reluz as a volunteer and Braxous as one of the mental health patients there. They first simply became friends, as Braxous had no actual friends or family to visit him. But after he was released, the two continued their friendship and eventually got together when Reluz was 20 and he was 23.

The two are more or less the definition of "opposites attract." Reluz ends up becoming a psychiatrist. She's an academic, caring but firm, and has a gentle heart. Braxous is basically a killer-for-hire and a thug. He can barely read and write, although has plenty of "street smarts" and icy cold to most people.

In the oneshot I wrote between them, the two break up due to Braxous trying constantly to keep Reluz at an arm's distance away. He is overprotective of her to the point where she feels smothered while at the same time barely knows him. Reluz wants to be part of his life, and feels she can protect herself fine.

its important to know that Braxous has an odd magical ability where he can summon a blue fire from his hands/arms that can burn, quite literally, everything. Even raw magic itself. But this also includes him. This power is tied closely to his emotions, which is why he is so icy most the time. But here, when he ends up losing control of his powers, Reluz chooses to burn herself to prove a point. This backfires immensely as Braxous blames himself for this happening.

It doesn't sound sad as I explain all this haha but let me tell you these are my ultimate OTP, my favorite characters of all time, I am OBSESSED with them even tho I don't talk about them much so writing this oneshot really tore my heart in half.

My only super edgy old OC was reworked into my blorbo Braxous who I adore with all my heart. He popped into my head when I was like… 11 or 12? So he’s uhhh 14ish years old now haha.

His design has somewhat changed over the years? But he’s always had the same color palette and Mohawk because cringe culture is dead and he means so much to me!! He use to be full dragon now he’s just a scalie. He is an ex-child soldier, a survivor of a cult and being experimented on, and he has the power to burn basically anything including raw magic. He enjoys styling his hair, hanging out with his wife, killing people, and his favorite food is apple sauce.

Braxous from the tales of ozoarth as he gets annoyed easily and is prone to violence, lol.

Aeztin, who is from the same series, is also prone to violence but a weakling. She'd rather raise a rat from the dead and have it claw at your face.

From soft touches, godless hands, it's definitely Beelzebub. She likes causing problems as well as solving said problems.

Who inspired your OC?

No one in particular. My OCs tend to just jump into my brain and demand attention. Braxous is a very old OC as well; over a decade old, and has gone through a lot of changes over the years, so I do not really recall what first inspired him unfortunately.

He would not greet you. He tends to keep to the shadows and moves to get from point A to point B. Those who try and greet him tend to be ignored.

Braxous is a loner and although he does have a few friends, he still keeps them at an arm's distance. He avoids getting too close to others as he doesn't want to put those he does care about in danger; either from himself or others.

Oh god this is such a hard question 'cause I love ALL my characters, but for different reasons. I'm going to cheat and choose multiple favorites 'cause that's just how I roll.

Rane & Korzan

This is going to be obvious but it's Rane. Of course it's Rane. She's my absolute baby and the first D&D character I made by myself without (too!) much outside help I had my partner help me when I decided to multiclass her into paladin hahaha

Rane is incredibly special to me and I pulled a lot of inspo from different sources to make her. She's a magical girl. She has PTSD. She's been betrayed by those she loved most. She struggles controlling her anger. She loves makeup and dresses. She's ok with being doused in blood. And she's even pansexual.

In a lot of ways, she's a character I needed when I was young, need now, and will need in the future. She's feminine, a badass, has mental health issues and complex flaws, but also tries her best and has good intentions. I love her so much and she is just so special to me.

The Tales of Ozoarth

Ttoo has an ensemble cast and is a collection of different storylines rather than one story. The cast has only grown since its inception and is considerably large with nearly 10 main characters across different storylines.

I love a lot of the characters and it is so hard to choose a favorite. But I am going to try and go with Braxous, since he is the character that spawned the world and everything around it.

Braxous is an old character. He is now over 15 years old and has gone through a lot of changes since I first made him. He is a huge comfort character for me and helped me a lot through school and beyond.

He's 100% a self-indulgent edgy OC. He started that way and he will always be that way. His past is complicated, and he has complicated relationships with those who raised him. He was abused growing up, manipulated, and in turn, he became a monster early on.

He's a murderer. A betrayer. A liar. Every adult failed him in his life. He was manipulated beyond belief. Borne into a cult and later blamed for following blindly.

He's completely fucked in the head. He enjoys killing people. He loves violence and fighting. But he also loves taking a rest. The world stopping for a moment as he catches his breath.

He loves applesauce and sweets. His mouth and teeth are messed up so he mainly has to eat soft foods. He spends most his cash on buying gifts for friends and bailing them out of trouble. He has killed children.

He's protective of those he cares about, but keeps them at an arm's distance as he does not want to hurt them. He knows his lifestyle is dangerous. He knows he's bad. He's a living weapon; a blade for others to wield, and does not see himself as a real person. He wants to protect his loved ones not just from danger, but himself. But in turn, despite his passion, his relationships are always shallow.

He's an utter contradiction. Depersonalization made form. An anti-hero that crosses the line into villainy more than once. And I absolutely love him.

Waking into Divinity

Now this is a harder one than the other 2 'cause I adore both Casrath and Rylie. But I think I'm going to lean more toward Rylie as I did take a lot of inspo from myself while creating them.

Rylie works a dead-end job and suffers from depression and anxiety. They have little passion in life. They're boring. They know they're boring. Just like most people are a little boring.

But they do have passions. Wants. But all of it is smothered by fear. Of the unknown. Of what could be. Of failure. It rules their life.

Casrath is a catalyst. And although Rylie's life is turned upside-down when they meet and form a relationship with them, Casrath does not cure Rylie's depression and anxiety. He does not chase away any fears of theirs. Casrath brings out the best in Rylie; their passion, their interests, and highlights their personality.

But ultimately, its Rylie who climbs out of their abyss alone. Casrath helps them, but through him, Rylie finds themself again. And finds who they are and what they stand for. And I think that's what makes Rylie oh-so special to me.

📖"what has surprised you about your WIPs?"

I already answered this here but I can expand on this!

I think something else that has surprised me to a degree is both how familiar and yet different a lot of my characters are... if that makes any sense!

I tend to gravitate toward certain concepts a lot as they are comforting for me and interest me. I've always been a fan of villains and antiheroes, for instance, and so the majority of my main characters fit that criteria. Those that fill a more traditional "heroic" trope usually get burdened with a lot of doubt and still have the capacity to turn out more morally grey or evil. My character Rane comes to mind with this. She is a D&D OC however and its easier to play the game when your character is easy to get along with, but even while writing her within prose, her struggles with inner darkness vs what she yearns for vs what she knows is right is interesting to me.

I used to think that all my WIPs are so different from one another and that I would be a difficult future author or writer to follow. And maybe to a degree that is true... after all, I bounce around a lot when it comes to genres and what I want to write about. That being said, there are certain themes that flow through all my works, and discovering that has really helped me understand myself better and who I am.

A major theme that is in every work of mine, whether said work is a lighter romance (The Cadence of You and Me) or a serious grimdark high fantasy (The Tales of Ozoarth) is the concept of different forms of abuse and how it shapes us.

I've only recently come to terms with how I've been abused myself, and how the different experiences of different forms of abuse have shaped my life. From teachers, to friends, to ex-partners and family (and in a way, how I've hurt myself as well), it's all really impacted how I see the world and how I interact with others. But that does not change who I am and it does not make me a broken person.

This theme runs through all my characters. Some more extreme than others, of course. (For example, Braxous from TToO is an ex-child soldier who grew up in a cult VS Rylie from WID, who grew up in an evangelical household and was stifled all their life by their family). But the theme is still there.

What is/are your OC’s nickname(s) and how did it come about?

Hm, Braxous actually doesn’t really have any nicknames that I can think of besides Reluz calling him “dear.” Even growing up his mother didn’t give him a nickname or anything. 

What does your OC normally wear? What would your OC wear on a special night?

I am actually in the process of researching vintage clothing and robes so I can rework the ENTIRETY of the way clothing works in Ozoarth! So please stand by for that!

In Izuktia, he mainly just wore his uniform, which is based heavily on roman armor for the most part. 

Who is the mother and/or father figure in your OC’s life?

Qzin-Curindez is Braxous’ mother and they had a... complicated relationship due to his upbringing and her own PTSD. 

As for a father figure... Braxous would say he’s never had a father, but as a child he looked up to Emperor Taz-Xaln. When he got older, he found an older friend in Huon Talon, a Nuzumian who worked as a detective. 

What does your OC think of children- either in general or about having them?

It’s... complicated. No surprise there. Braxous didn’t really have a childhood so to speak of so seeing young kids be able to just... be kids? Is incredibly uncomfortable for him. He usually relates more to youths who are already criminals or who had poor upbringings. He usually rather works with these kids (being a BAD influence) than anything else and treats them like adults since... in the culture he grew up in, he was considered an adult at 13. 

In general, Braxous thinks he would be a terrible father and on that basis alone doesn’t want kids. 

Who are the people your OC surrounds him/herself with?

Not, uh, good people if we’re being honest. Huon and Reluz are the only really “good” people he tends to be around, but since he’s a criminal, he mainly surrounds himself with other criminals.

He is also somewhat friends with Murin and Nakira. Murin runs his own small bar and also tends to dabble in dealing drugs while Nakira is a sex worker and a stripper (but the former is illegal in The Kiniarth) 

Those two are also complicated people, and tends to fall into more morally gray areas than straight up “are bad.” 

Why does your OC and his/her soulmate work so well together? 

They’re kinda the opposites attract sort of couple and have always been there for each other during the other’s dark days.

Reluz was... well, not Braxous’ first friend technically, but the first after a series of disasters and death. He didn’t want to be her friend at first, didn’t want that closeness, but Reluz is understanding, compassionate, and soft. She also gave him space and was the first to not treat him as if he were vulnerable or dangerous, but equally, and that had a lot of impact on Braxous. 

After they got together? They always try and bring out the best in the other. 

How does your OC react to and handle stress?

Not too bad actually. Since Braxous is stubborn he tends to get really focused on what he is doing. When it comes to familiar stress, he can work with it. Stress in regards to his relationship with Reluz, or stress based on things in the past he can’t handle nearly as well. 

What are some things that annoy your OC?

Only some? aw. 

In general, any sort of authority, loud areas, strip joints and clubs in general (which sucks since a lot of his work is given from those fronts...) the elite also annoy him to a degree? 

From there he also gets frustrated when he has to read or write since he is. Bad at both. Poor guy.  

How easily does your OC forgive?

Braxous doesn’t think he’s in the position to have to forgive anyone, and he believes if anything, others are in the position to forgive him. 

(not that he thinks he deserves forgiveness, however, because he doesn’t.)

What is the general impression your OC gives other people?

Cold, aloof, and dangerous. Best not to talk or even look at him.

Since Braxous is also Izuktian, there are many who dislike him based on that principle alone. 

How emotionally/mentally vulnerable is your OC with other people?

Not. Like, at all? The only person he lets get that close to him as to see his vulnerable side is Reluz (and her mother, I suppose)... and I guess Huon Talon, but yeah. Only those few people. Everyone else he keeps at an arms distance away.
