Ending Iran nuclear deal would worsen North Korea situation: Kerry

Ending Iran nuclear deal would worsen North Korea situation: Kerry
GENEVA (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump risks driving Iran towards nuclear proliferation and worsening a standoff with North Korea if Washington ends a nuclear deal with Tehran, former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said late on Thursday.
FILE PHOTO: Secretary of State John Kerry speaks at Ho Chi Minh University of Technology and Education in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, January 13, 2017. REUTERS/Alex Brandon/Pool
Kerry, who negotiated the 2015 deal between Iran and world powers, was speaking a week after Trump refused to certify that Tehran was in compliance with it, amid growing tensions with Pyongyang over its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.
“If you want to negotiate with (North Korean leader) Kim Jong Un, and your goal is to avoid war and try to be able to have a diplomatic resolution, the worst thing you can do is first threaten to destroy his country in the United Nations,” Kerry said.
He was speaking in a private lecture delivered at Geneva’s Graduate Institute.
“And secondly, screw around with the deal that has already been made because the message is, don’t make a deal with the United States, they won’t keep their word,” he said.
The nuclear deal places Iran under tough restraints, including inspections, round-the-clock surveillance and tracking every ounce of uranium produced, Kerry said. “We would notice an uptick in their enrichment, like that,” he said, snapping his fingers.
“And nobody that I know of with common sense can understand what the virtue is in accelerating a confrontation with the possibility that they might decide they want to break out and make it (a nuclear bomb) now instead of 10 or 15 or 25 years from now.”
Kerry, a former Senator who headed the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told Swiss media that Trump’s leaving the Iranian deal’s fate to Congress was “very dangerous” and opened the door to “party politics”.
Congress cannot unilaterally renegotiate a multilateral accord, the Geneva daily Le Temps quoted him as saying. “It is possible that Congress would make an unreasonable decision that would put Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a very complicated political situation that could force him to retaliate. It’s a slippery slope.”
Khamenei said on Wednesday that Tehran would stick to its accord as long as the other signatories respected it, but would “shred” the deal if Washington pulled out, state TV reported.
If Iran violated the accord, U.N. sanctions would snap back into place, Kerry told the audience. “Moreover, at that point in time folks, we have a year of break-up. We have all the time that we need in the world to be able to bomb their facilities into submission.”
Ending the deal could lead to Iran hiding fissile production facilities “deep in a mountain where we have no insight”.
“So the scenario that Trump opens up by saying ‘let’s get rid of the deal’ is actually proliferation, far more damaging and dangerous,” Kerry said.

Matilda The Musical at the Dr. Phillips Center
Matilda The Musical
“Revolting Children, living in revolting times”
TIME Magazine’s #1 Show of the Year, “Matilda The Musical”, opens at the Dr. Phillips Center on Tuesday, May 9 for a limited one week run through May 14. The show is based on the novel of the same name by Roald Dahl who also wrote classics children’s stories like “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “James and the Giant Peach,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” and many others. “Matilda The Musical” is directed by Tony Award winner Matthew Warchus (“God of Carnage”), who helms this production with a book by Tony Award-winning playwright Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Australian comedian, musician and composer Tim Minchin. The show is the winner of over 70 international awards including four Tony Awards and a record-breaking seven Olivier Awards including Best Musical. Matilda is a precocious five year-old girl with the gift of telekinesis who loves reading, overcomes obstacles caused by her family and school, and helps her teacher to reclaim her life. The title role is played by three actresses; Gabby Gutierrez, Jaime MacLean and Jenna Weir. The principal cast also features (alphabetically): Jennifer Bowles (Miss Honey), Dan Chameroy (Miss Trunchbull), Keisha T. Fraser (Mrs. Phelps), Matt Harrington (Mr. Wormwood) and Darcy Stewart (Mrs. Wormwood). It was a pleasure to sit down with Jennifer Bowles for this exclusive Hotspots Interview. Bowles is originally from Florida and is looking forward to performing in her home state. Were you always an actor even as a child?
No, I absolutely wasn’t. I was a ballet dancer when I was little and very shy. No one ever expected me to become an actor. What was your first professional/paid gig?
I did a tour of the musical “Wonderful Town” when I was just out of college. When did you know performing would be your career?
In high school I made the transition from ballet to theater and that’s when I knew I wanted to do this as a living. What has been your favorite role other than this one?
My favorite show that I have been in was “American Idiot.” It was my first Broadway show and there is something magical about your first Broadway show. The actors in that production were very special, and it felt like we were a bunch of misfits doing this awesome rock show on Broadway. What is your fantasy role?
It would be playing Audrey in “Little Shop of Horrors.” I played Audrey in high school and would love to play her as an adult. What should the Orlando audience expect from this production of “Matilda”?
I think they should expect it to be different than the movie as its much more like the book. However the show has added plotline, so it goes farther than the book. It does go much deeper and darker and it is one of the most beautiful shows I have ever done or seen. The music is brilliant and it’s an important show as it’s about a couple people who believe their voices can’t be heard. Then, they meet this little girl who helps them. The theme of the show is “Even though I am [only] one person I can still make a difference.” The Ensemble of “Matilda The Musical” includes Jacob Anderson, Gabby Beredo, Darren Burkett, Jacqueline Burtney, Eric Craig, Talia Consentino, Stephen Diaz, Gregory Diaz IV, Blake Ferrante, Keisha T. Fraser, Heidi Friese, Michael D. Jablonski, Jim Kaplan, Marisa Kennedy, Anthony MacPherson, Tyler McKenzie, Soren Thayne Miller, Gray Monczka, Brittany Nicholas, Abigail Nicholson, Justin Packard, Molly Richardson, Kim Sava, Liz Schmitz, Brandon Stonestreet and Isabella Stuebing. The production has sets and costumes by Tony Award winner Rob Howell, with choreography by Peter Darling, orchestrations, additional music and musical supervision by Christopher Nightingale, lighting by Tony Award winner Hugh Vanstone, and sound by Simon Baker. Tickets are available at the Dr. Phillips Center Box Office, 445 S. Magnolia Avenue
Orlando, DrPhillipsCenter.org or by calling 844-513-2014. Ticket prices start at $33.75.
