its actually soooo insane that all of the surviving characters of brba/bcs universe are just living out their lives in albuquerque still. just carrying on in the Wake Of things. somewhere in that city, marie schrader is picking out which earrings to wear to the fundraiser dinner in honor of her husband and steve gomez. stacey erhmantraut is leaving work early to have dinner with kaylee and her new boyfriend. brandon mayhew is putting in an extra shift at his line cook job to earn a little more spending cash for his and pete's upcoming anniversary road trip to la. manuel varga is being given his afternoon medications by his nurse, then wheeled to the window so he can watch the sunset. characters who had their lives blown up and never got a conclusion, never got thematic closure. no matter what happens, no matter how terrible and destructive, the world keeps turning. pay day comes. bills are due. holly white gets braces.

the complexities of addict to addict friendships are so often intertwined with really sincere care and love. sometimes they aren't, of course, but sometimes they are, and i look at skinny pete and badger throughout jesse's timeline in this perspective. i think about skinny pete and combo peer pressuring jesse to do meth in early seasons, despite him trying to stay sober; i think about badger and skinny pete later on being pressured by jesse to do the very same thing. i think about them talking about working the steps, and how addiction can so often skew your perspectives, and how isolation (particularly within abusive circumstances) can make you cling onto the misery loves company angle and not see the wrongs you are doing as you enact them. but something so striking about these moments to me, though, is that regardless of them, in el camino, when we have what seems to be a moment of relative sobriety (sans weed) with badger and skinny pete, we see this clarity and compassion. we see care and consideration. we see that friendship with no judgement, no guidelines, no prerequisite or debt tied to it.

what's important to me about this is how their friendship prevails. what's also important to me is how we see these echoes of how their friendship operated before, pushing through these horrific moments and aftermath of severe trauma (and torture). we witness the petulance from badger that we see way back when jesse and him had argued plenty of times, we see the leadership (and now, in a more well-adjusted and wholly well intended light) from skinny pete. we see the drive and loyalty that has kept those two, throughout all of those years, still at jesse's side. it doesn't take away from the ugly moments, nor does it take away from all the messy nuances of addict to addict friendships, but it does hold weight. it does give an importance and layer to the "comic relief" factors of this show. it makes them into more than a cut scene, a tagline, or surface level characters. it makes them active, present, people (and friends) who have seen jesse pinkman survive, and cared for him (in varying degrees of exercising that care) through all of it. it makes them feel real
