[dropcap]H[/dropcap]appy May! Iâm excited for warmer weather, AND this monthâs talented and hardworking Creative Biz Spotlight â Miki from Black Tulip Shop!
Miki gave me a little bit of her time for an interview. I love getting to know other artists to see what drives them, and to see how they came to have such a collection of amazing work.
Read ~ Magical Girl Mikiâs ~ interview belowâŠ
Hey, Miki! In your own words, please introduce yourself, and tell us why you do what you do.
Hi, my name is Miki and I run an Etsy store called black tulip shop. I make jewelry, charms, pouches, bags and doll accessories inspired by Japanese kawaii culture. I also sell vintage items that fits with the theme of the shop. I live in Atlanta, GA where there is a great indie craft scene, with my husband and two mischievous little cats (Roxy and Spike). I love collecting and making cute things and having the shop gives me a chance to share my love of cuteness with others.
Q: If a kid walked up to you asking for your advice and you only had a few minutes to give âem your best tip, what would it be?
A: It may be old fashioned but I would tell them if they really want something to work hard for it.
Q: If you had the chance to live during an artistic movement or fashion era in the past, which one would you choose?
A: Hmm, thatâs a tough one but I would say 1950s/60s. Thereâs a lot of great pop and futuristic art and design that even by todayâs standards are really neat and fun.
Q: What do you do to get into your creative zone?
Black Tulip Shop Kawaii strawberry milk bookmark paper clip.
A: Usually I go shopping for supplies to get into my creative zone. A lot of the times I see beads and fabric and can already tell what I want to make with it. The times I have been to Japan has been a big creative inspiration for me as well. The craft stores there are amazing and I canât imagine another city in the world having the variety of shops that Japan has. Walking through Nippori (Fabric Town) with various fabric, trim and button shops or spending hours in a huge store like Yuzawaya looking at fabric, beads and drawing supplies is the best. There is cuteness everywhere there so itâs hard to not get inspired.
Q: How do you fit your creative work into your schedule? What days or time of the day do you usually work?
A: I feel like I work 24/7 but usually I work from about 9am-6pm Monday-Friday. Since I work from home itâs pretty easy to fit my work in between other things like housework and spending time with friends and family.
Q: What are your favorite things to work with (tools, materials, etc.)?
A: I like working with fabric a lot since you can make so much with it. As far as beading goes I love finding a good charm to work with or pretty pastel colored beads. I also have a thing for anything iridescent whether itâs fabric, vinyl or beads.

Pastel Kawaii Star Earrings by Black Tulip Shop
Kawaii Magical Kitty Eyeglass Case by Black Tulip Shop
Q: What are your biggest creative inspirations?
A: Like many other people the street styles and brands in Harajuku are a big inspiration. Also vintage fashion and accessories from the 40s, 50s, 60s and 80s like dresses and jewelry are amazing along with vintage toys.
Q: What was the most enjoyable thing youâve ever done with your creative work?
A: Making custom items is great! A lot of the time you work with the customer to make a very specific item for themselves or a loved one and hearing back that it was perfect makes me really happy.
Q: Last but not least the most important question: Whatâs your favorite dinosaur?
A: Triceratops, they look kinda bad ass, like a battering ram with spikes.
Thank you for spending time with us, Miki!

*As I mentioned in my previous post, I still have a lot of photos and experiences to share from our treehouse adventure in Peruâs Amazon Rainforest! If you missed my previous Treehouse Lodge posts, click here.*
Staying in an honest-to-goodness treehouse in the Amazon Rainforest was quite the adventure in and of itself, however, our days spent exploring were equally as exciting! On our second day, after we returned from a day of spotting wildlife in the rainforest, our guide from the Treehouse Lodge asked if we would like to visit a local village to see how they lived. I was rather hesitant, after our rather crummy âcultural experienceâ at the Floating Islands in Lake Titicaca, Peru. But holy smokes! I am so glad we decided to take out guide up on this experience! If youâre ever in the Amazon Rainforest (especially near Iquitos, Peru) say yes to visiting the local rainforest village!
The village is only about a 10-minute boat ride from the Treehouse Lodge. However, other than the few lodges and one other village along the river, this is a very remote area. Iquitos is the nearest city and itâs almost a 90-minute boat ride away!
I expected to be bombarded with people trying to sell me crafts (like at the Floating Islands), however, this was a far different experience! We visited several familyâs homes, and it was an incredibly authentic experience â and never once were we being pressured to buy anything.
The Sloth Family
Our first stop was at a familyâs home, where they had adopted several sloths! The mom of the family had found two sloths as babies abandoned in the rainforest. She raised them and now has them living in her home with her and her family. They have free-range to roam and come down from the trees or roof when they get hungry! I was so shocked when we walked in to see a sloth hanging from the ceiling, haha.
They happily came down for a snack of some leafy plant, and then the family asked if we would like to hold one. They were very calm and relaxed and felt a lot like holding a baby that had massive claws, haha. (Donât worry he wasnât hurting me at all.)
Best selfie ever? Haha.
Another adorable family member of the sloths, haha
Anaconda!
After our sloth visit, we went across the river into the village. Our boat driverâs dad took us into his backyard, where he had recently captured an anaconda! He was trying to figure out what to do with itâŠas he didnât want to kill it, but also didnât want to let it go near the village because it was big enough to eat one of the children. Yikes!
He was getting ready to shed his skin and grow again â thatâs why his eyes look white.
Jewelry Making
The animals were definitely unexpected, but honestly, the loveliest surprise was how kind the ladies of the village were. It started to rain REALLY hard after we saw the snake. So, we stopped by our guideâs in-lawâs home for shelter. They invited me in to show how they cooked in their home.
Gotta fan the coals while you cook!
Then they showed me how to make a beaded bracelet like what they were wearing. I thought that was very nice! I was also terrible at making them, but my husband was really goodâŠwhich we all thought was hilarious.
My husband, taking over making my bracelet for me.
Soccer games & homes
Soccer is life in South America! It was fun to watch a match while we were walking through the village and admired the local jail (that had one cell for unruly intoxicated folks), the school and church.
the jail

Oriole nests
A home
This dogâs name has to be Doby! Haha.
The storm rolling in.
Sunset
After the storm, we were treated to one of the craziest sunsets I have ever seen on our way back to the lodge. It looked as though the entire world was bathed in orange and pink. I loved it!
This was such an incredible experience! And a big thank you to all of the folks who kindly invited us into their homes to share their way of life with us. Itâs an experience I wonât forget. And if you find yourself if the Peruvian Amazon one day â definitely visit a local village!
What was the most surprising part of this village visit for you? And what was one of your favorite cultural experiences while traveling? Let me know in the comments!

Plan a Trip to Dog-Friendly Toronto
#Poop4U
Home to The Blue Jays, Raptors, Maple Leafs, Hockey Hall of Fame and the CN Tour, Toronto is characteristically Cancuk and generally dog loving.
But Canadaâs largest multicultural metropolitan can be challenging to navigate with a dog in tow â unless you know where to go. If youâre visiting Toronto with your pooch, youâll need a plan and good weather.
Warmer temperatures make for a better visit, because youâll be spending most of your time outside. And this just got easier. As of January 2020, pets are no longer restricted from patios â thatâs right, for years dogs couldnât be near restaurants in Ontario (though a few neighborhood haunts flaunted the rule).
Thankfully, thatâs all changed, and business owners now make their own policies.
So, itâs a great year to pack your dog in the car and check out Canadaâs most populated province â starting with dog-friendly Toronto.
Where to run: High Park Dog Off-Leash Park
High Park (1873 Bloor Street West) is a 400-acre green oasis in Torontoâs west end and contained within is one awesome dog park. Many locals start and finish their off-leash experience at âDog Hill,â an open dirt mound, worn bare by four-legged friends, complete with picnic tables, a few trees, and a water faucet for canine hydration.
However, itâs better to veer off the beaten hill and follow the leash-free trail system through the woods. Thanks to rustic wire-mesh fencing lining the wide trails, you dog can freely find his way down the wood-chip road without interfering with wildlife, flora and fauna ⊠or losing you. A map explains the looping trails and yellow markers mean no leash required.
But wait â thereâs more. A dog-friendly zoo: inside High Park the 100-year-old charming High Park Zoo (77 Deer Pen Road) houses hooved animals such as deer, bison, capybara and llamas behind wire fences. This compact zoo essentially runs along a neighborhood pedestrian street, so leashed dogs are welcome, and youâll see many tethered to baby strollers out for some afternoon air.
Where to tour: The Distillery District
Considering its nefarious past as a whisky running port, Torontoâs trendy Distillery District (9 Trinity Street) is an area ripe with ghost stories â a fact not lost on the Haunted Walk tour company running several tours in the Toronto. Some are dog friendly.
Specifically, the 75-minute Haunted Walks of Torontoâs Ghosts and Spirits of the Distillery, February to November, amusingly recounts tales of ghost sightings among the old industrial buildings currently filled with boutiques, galleries and coffee shops. First, bring your dog along to stroll the cobble stone walkways, then joined the tour.
The Haunted Walk of Toronto offers other walks throughout the city, but the Distillery District tour is the best because it is entirely outside, dog-friendly and confined to a reasonable walking distance.
Where to Party: Annual Dog Festivals
Woofstock claims status as North Americaâs largest pet festival. Admission is free at Woodbine Beach Park (1695 Queen St E) in Toronto during Woofstock, the first weekend of June each year (June 6 and 7, 2020), and if you arrive early, parking is free in the beach lot beside Lake Ontario.
At the festival, contests such as best-dressed dog grace the mainstage and a central lure course keeps pups busy. Big-named brands like Purina, Milkbone and Royal Canine hand out samples alongside pet product entrepreneurs selling anything from organic treats to dog closets. Itâs crowded but festive.
If youâd rather stay inside, another large pet festival that sees people lining up to get in happens Easter Weekend each year â The Canadian Pet Expo finds a home at the International Centre (6900 Airport Rod., Mississauga) near Torontoâs Pearson Airport twice a year. The spring event is always Easter, but the fall/winter dates vary.
Where to stay: Pet Friendly Hotel
During the2013 ice storm that knocked out power to parts of Toronto for days, The Chelsea Hotel (33 Gerrard Street West) advertised fair rates for locals needing a place to stay. A newspaper ran a photo of a dog with its family at the hotel solidifying The Chelsea as the dog-friendly accommodation in downtown Toronto (but not the only one).
Book a Bring-your-Canine-Buddy suite (for $50 extra) at The Chelsea and youâll find a dog bed, food and water bowl, and locally-made organic dog treats in your room.
Ask to be close to the ground floor for easier bathroom breaks because this is one of the largest tallest hotels in Toronto. Itâs also the only one with a two-story waterslide jutting out the side â so the indoor pool (not dog friendly) is exceptionally fun for the family. No kids? Deck 27 is the alternate adult-only pool.
Young Street, the heart of downtown, is outside the Chelseaâs front door and where youâll have to head for potty breaks. Pick up breakfast to go at the Expressio on-the-go cafĂ© in the hotel, making eating with the dog possible and cheaper than room service. Bring your own dog food, though.
Where to nosh: Evergreen Brickworks Farmerâs Market
Beyond the downtown core, Evergreen Brickworks (550 Bayview Avenue) is a repurposed brick factory â now a trendy environmental space with landscaped trails, pond and open industrial space hosting events such as Torontoâs Saturday morning Farmerâs Market and permanent cafes, a bike shop and garden center.
Most of the area is dog-friendly, so much so the people drinking fountain has a ground level version for Fido. By farmerâs market standards, the Saturday morning event (8 am to 2 pm, June to September) is not that big, but it is exotic, chichi and dog-friendly featuring organic vegetables, artisan bread and even a few pet specific vendors like Healing Doggy treats and another selling raw Ostrich meat pet food.
Leashes are mandatory, and dogs can stroll all public places (including nearby green spaces) except one indoor building and the food prep area outside.

Zenith-Caste Solar Exalt, Martial Artist/Scholar

Pinterest Inspiration Board
Physical Description:
Pyrrhus is taller, at 6âČ3âł, broadly shouldered and well-muscled. Heâs a superb martial artist and athlete; it shows in his build and posture. He can do stuff like ThisÂ
Heâs in his late 40s/early 50s but looks about ten years younger, if not more, since he was Exalted in his late 30s.
He wears his white blond-to-gold-to-red hair in a mane-like style, shaved on both sides of his head but long in a wide stripe down the middle of his head from forehead to nape. Itâs currently cut short, the longest strands just hitting the tops of his shoulders.
Itâs either constrained in a Sokka-style ponytail at the back of his head or braided down to the nape of his neck. (If heâs having a really bad day it hangs loose and bedraggled). (See Pinterest Inspiration Board for more examples)
His eyes are medium-blue like bleached indigo.
Pyrrhus is from the Blessed Isle, and so has the olive-y southern Mediterranean complexion common there, with an undertone of ruddy bronze (it was expected he would exalt as a fire-aspect and they tend to very fiery complexions; he didnât).
Here is a range of inspiration/examples from the Humanae project:
(7515-C) (71-4 C) (67-4 C) (64-5 C) (58-5 C)
I usually describe his face as a cross between Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jamie Lannister) and Collin Chou (the Seraph, Matrix series) - or Godfrey Gao.
Linked gallery, above, are the only drawings of him Iâve managed Iâm partway happy with.
References for Godfrey Gao (img 1 - Google Image Search)
Heâs got a Resting-Sad-Face, in that his neutral face looks pretty broody or sadly contemplative, mostly due to the natural curve of his eyelids and brows.
Pyrrhus has a set of orichalcum tattoos (actual metal embedded in his skin but is âlivingâ and moves with him) - a line of script in High Realm set between two enclosing lines (see here for script/lines reference) - looping from one shoulder, down his chest to the top of his sternum, up to the other shoulder, and across his back in the same fashion. It lays on him like a chain of office.
Thereâs an old burn scar/brand on his sternum just below the tattoo which looks like an eight rayed zierscheibe. His forearms and lower legs are covered in old, faded tiny white linear scars, nearly invisible. On his back, from knee to neck, are lash scars. They are criss-crossing wide white lines, faded but still visible, from old torture. The only reason any of the scars are even still visible is that they were inflicted with Necrotic-essence-fueled weaponsÂ
Clothing:
Pyrrhus can usually be found wearing the layered undyed robes of an immaculate monk even though heâs on âRetreatâ/sabbatical, with a red dragon-embroidered obi/sash knotted on one hip, and sturdy boots good for both walking and riding. When he is training, he goes barefoot and shirtless.
But really, have fun with clothing design! Make something up! Â Anything that looks like itâs from Avatar:tLA (or LoK) or vaguely Jedi or Asian-themed is pretty good; he tends towards simpler styles and solid, muted colors. He does have to attend official and ceremonial functions however, so fancier clothing does exist in his wardrobe. His wife, Angeline, is much more fashion conscious than he is, and so also makes sure he has more elaborate garb as well. Â
He can summon Arbiter armor made of Essence/hard light when he needs to; it is made following the pattern of scale maille, but looks closer to koi, snake, or dragon scales than true historical scale maille. Itâs translucent and golden, and fits close to his skin and clothing. The plates of the armor are bigger where he doesnât need as much flexibility, smaller on the joints. Theyâre sleek and clean-looking. Being magical, the armor doesnât actually need to follow physical limitations or practicality concerns, but theyâre made from Pyrrhusâ will and intentions, so they are as practical as he is. He can also summon a pair of Chinese-style slightly curved dao swords of the same translucent golden hard light.
Accessories:
He sometimes wears a dragon-headed torc of red & gold metal and/or a masculine-looking ear-cuff of orichalcum wire and fire agate. Both are magical artifacts.
The torc allows him to emulate a Fire-Aspectâs anima, both on demand and transmuting the lower overflows of his own anima. (Mechanically, anything up to 10-mote peripheral usage will transmute to a Fire-Aspect anima. Beyond that itâs regular Solar bonfires).
The ear-cuff was a gift from a fellow Solar, and allows subvocal communications with wearers of other linked ear-cuff artifacts within a short range (thirty miles).Â
In non-magical accessories, he often has a set of stone mala prayer beads, usually looped around his wrist.
Anima: Â
Pyrrhusâ anima banner is a charred, sooty, raggedy-plumaged phoenix, with fire showing underneath the black, like magma with a cooled broken crust. It shadows or echoes his movements, wing to arm, head to head, etc. Before he went into the Underworld the phoenix was brilliantly fire-colored and impeccably feathered. Both versions are translucent, ghostly gold-tinted.

Caleb âWraithshotâ Raith
Dawn Caste Solar Exalt
Calebâs Pinterest Inspiration Board
Calebâs easy. Think of every western trope and smash them all together. Heâs a cowboy bounty hunter; a self-proclaimed lawman in a land where there is no law, riding circuit on a handful of towns in the South he considers his and protecting them from whatever evils lurk in the desert.
Physical Description:
Caleb stands at 5âČ11âł and is on the leaner side at ~185 lbs. Heâs fit, like a brawler (been in significantly more than his fair share of bar fights) or a ranch hand - someone who works at hard physical labor most days.
Caleb looks like heâs in his early 30s
Being the son of Northern immigrants, Calebâs complexion is mostly pale, a reddish-burned tan anywhere the sun would shine - arms to the elbows, back of the neck, face mostly.
Heâs also freckly across his face, shoulders and upper back, mostly from sun.
His eyes are clear honey-colored brown, more gold towards the pupil from the influence of exaltation.
Hair is black at the roots, growing out into sun-streaked brownish blond. He usually keeps it cut pretty short but if it goes too long without a trim it gets curlier. He likes a clean-shaven face but given his lifestyle heâs pretty much always got a day or three of scruff.
Caleb⊠basically looks like Chris Pratt.Â
Heâs always got a smile of some stripe - warm, mischievous, leering, insincerely-wide - something.
Heâs also very mouthy, and usually has something to chew on, whether itâs a piece of straw, a match, a toothpick, a cigarette (50% chance of it actually being lit), a twig - something. Heâs never met a lollipop or chewing gum but he would love them.
Caleb dresses in layers - shirt sleeves, a vest/waistcoat, and either a faded blue or red serape tossed over his shoulders or a brown longcoat. Pants are either canvas or faded denim, and boots are less cowboy-style and more combat- or motorcycle style with a heel for riding. He does wear spurs, but theyâre blunted. Heâs usually covered in trail dust and sweat, sometimes blood, despite efforts at cleanliness. Feel free to embellish the standard Cowboy gear with arabesque/middle eastern ornamentation, because it is ExaltedâŠ
He always carries two modified flame pieces (six-shooters⊠heâs got six-shooters) on his hips, and the beltâs buckle is large and obnoxious, mostly because he keeps a couple extra rounds of ammunition within it. He also has an artifact rifle (based on a Winchester M1873; lever action, but otherwise unspecified) named Medicine Man that is either slung across his back or is in a sheath on his horseâs saddle. He makes his own ammo for all his weapons. He is a student of Righteous Devil Style, having mastered up to the form charms, but his sifu disappeared and heâs not found another, nor is he skilled enough to pick it up without tutelage.
He does own chaps but whether or not he wears them on any given day depends on how hot it is and how much hard riding heâs anticipating. He has a hat heâs rather fond of, but itâs not anything truly special.Â
There may or may not be a bandana around his neck/on his person at any given moment, and he often wears a chip of blue crystal with an antelope petroglyph etched on it around his neck on a leather cord. Itâs a token from his friend, a springs goddess named Rivela, and a reminder of a partner he lost.
He rides a buckskin warhorse named Dirt who he pretends not to be particularly attached to, but in fact he really really is. Dirt is his horse. Dirt adores him and is always trying to steal his hat. Dirt will also steal anyone elseâs hat nearby, but he prefers Calebâs.
Anima: Calebâs anima banner is a hailstorm of bright burning metal, like large forge sparks, raining down on him and even appear to bounce off his skin and clothing. Golden smoke and flame rise from the ground at his feet wherever the sparks fall.

Lysistrata Starborn, the Rising Cobra
Chosen of Battles, Sidereal Exalt
Lysistrata was one of the many Sidereals whose Exaltations slipped through the cracks, and began her career as a Chosen of Battles by engineering a successful slave revolt in a Firedust mine in the deep South. She subscribes to no factions, believing such nonsense to distract from the true job of Sidereals.
Lysistrataâs Pinterest Inspiration Board Lysistrataâs Character Playlist
Physical Description:
Lysistrata is slightly below average height and well-proportioned, at about 5'5" and 140lbs. She is an excellent martial artist (Dreaming Pearl Courtesan Stylist) and strong for her size.Â
She is tanned but not dark, definitely lighter than most Southern natives, with shining black hair that reaches her ankles when left loose and arched brows. She could have walked straight from a bollywood film.
About that hair. She usually keeps it piled on her head in complicated braids and loops, secured by stiletto daggers and other small weapons that, coincidentally, look like beautiful hair sticks and ornaments. Her Fellowship jokes that one can tell how bad a fight was by how flat her hair is after, as she pulls more and more sharp things out of it.
Her eyes are a shade of red so dark they might as well be black, shining with scarlet highlights in bright light: like looking into a glass of merlot wine. She uses dramatic eyeshadow (see Pinterest board) and cosmetics.
Lysistrata is busty and curvy enough to attract any number of eyes, and uses her attractiveness as a weapon when it suits her.Â
Lysistrata is known for wearing red silk gowns - always. Sometimes itâs in heavily brocaded Chinese style, sometimes in flowing saris, but always always scarlet. She loves jewelry and the finer things in life.Â
She has a firesnake familiar - a cobra-like snake of clear living crystal- who helped her in the battle that granted her Exaltation.Â
Lysistrata is, much like her Greek namesake, a calculating soul, using exalts and mortals alike as tools to further her (the Maidensâ) goals. This is not to say that she is not passionless or devoid of emotion, merely that her priorities are a little skewed. She has her favored weapons in steel and Exalt alike (...like Caleb).Â
She dons identities and emotions as easily as clothing and is an excellent actress. She is confident to the point of arrogance, shameless, and cares exactly nil for what other people think or expect of her, so long as the Maidens are pleased, and takes perverse pleasure in occasionally flustering people and flaunting societal expectations.Â
She has two main âidentitiesâ.Â
The first as the founder and one of the Scarlet Veils, a bower of very expensive, exclusive courtesans who cater to the military and other elite of the South. Lysistrata, along with six hand-picked mortal women who could be her twins (Nikostrata, Androstrata, Sophiastrata, Demostrata, Philostrata, and Xenostrata), use the group to influence the outcomes of battles and conflicts in the region by influencing the key players. Sometimes itâs by pampering and relaxing a general or soldier so they do their best, and sometimes itâs by seducing and bewitching a politician or warlord until they think of nothing but the Veils, bumbling their job and losing a conflict.Â
The other Destiny, the Rising Cobra, is a mysterious figure who shows up as a harbinger of victory. Lysistrata used this Destiny the least, feeling it too conspicuous. As the Cobra, Lysistrata wears a set of red-enameled star metal Celestial Power Armor (Monsoon Sunrise) and wields a dual-bladed star metal artifact glaive (Tsunami of Leaping Stars), and fights directly in support of the side she wishes to win. Often just the sight of the armor is enough to turn the tide, as sheâs turned the Cobra into something of a mythological figure in her domain.
Both these artifacts were made late in the Primordial War from the remains of forgotten gods who, hand in hand, sacrificed themselves in a bid to turn the tide of a battle. It worked, and the Sidereal who at the time bore Lysistrataâs exaltation, honored their memory by creating the artifacts to continue in their preservation of Creation.Â

[st_horizontal_line]
A German band from the early 70âs changed the way music sound
[st_horizontal_line]
Kraftwerk was created in the German city DĂŒsseldorf; the band formed by Ralf HĂŒtter and Florian Schneider in 1970, Â fronted by them until Schneiderâs departure in 2008. Their signature is easily recognizable driving; repetitive rhythms with strong melodies, minimalist strictly electronic instruments, almost naĂŻve lyrics simplified and at times sung through a vocoder of computer speech software. The harmonies are classical western; however, these simplified lyrics are conceptual and enormously strong future-oriented.
Description once exotic objects in our consumer culture that today are the most ordinary and important things surrounded with (similarities to pop art). In 1981 came the albums Computer Welt those lyrics singing about home computers, pocket calculators a conceptual work and vision of todayâs world of computers. In 1986 came the albumElectric CafĂ© and again Kraftwerk lyrics are about the telephone, mobile phones, and a society builds upon electronic communication; still with the catchy melody laying on the top making their songs feel like any Beatles tunes sing along. Earlier work as the Autobahn (1974), RadioaktivitĂ€t (1975) and Trans-Europe Expresss (1977) state a clear vision of the future, motorways, transportation, superfast trains, energy consumption etc.
No band has influenced pop culture more than Kraftwerk since the Beatles
In the 1970s and early 1980s, Kraftwerk distinctive sound was revolutionary and has had a lasting effect across many genres of modern music. No other band has influenced pop culture more than Kraftwerk since the Beatles, their massive impact on the sound and music for an artist such as Moby, David Bowie, R.E.M., Daft Punk, Orchestral Maneuverâs in the Dark, Madonna, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Missy Elliott and Fergie. It doesnât stop their Techno music from Detroit would not have happened if it wasnât the impact Kraftwerk had on âBelleville threeâ (Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson & Derrick May), who fused the repetitive melodies of Kraftwerk with funk rhythms. Hip Hop roots is no exception for their influence; Trans Europe Express and Numbers mixed in Planet Rock by Afrika Bambaataa and The Soul Sonic Force, one of the earliest hip-hop/electro hits. Richard D James (Aphex Twin), Björk, Joy Division and New Order were heavily influenced by Kraftwerk. David Bowieâs âV-2 Schneider,â released as B-side to the âHeroesâ single, features on the album âHeroes,â is a tribute to Florian Schneider. Furthermore, disco scene and later electronic music would not have been the same.

Live at Tribal Gathering 1997
I have luckily seen the band play since the 80âs when I saw them at Rockefeller in Oslo, a 1000 capacity club, later the night. I even shared a few beers with Ralf HĂŒtter and Florian Schneider on an after a show in a club near the venue. In 1997, I saw them on the legendary dance festival Tribal Gathering in Luton outside London. The performance should be one of the key concerts in their history; club land was at its highest point commercially and that night all other bands stopped playing simply because every other musician wanted to experience the band. Kraftwerk has always cultivated their own style, whatever trend going on in pop culture they resisted making changes; their total anti-fashion statement should turn to the fashion statement. After a concert, I had seen the members walk out of a venue without even being recognized, with a small sack, jeans and a jacket they looked like the most ordinary people.
[st_horizontal_line]
The album The Man-Machine (German: Die Mensch Maschine), was released in 1978, and it is the album that created the fashion look this post is about. The album was recorded at their studio Kling Klang; however, due to the complexity of the recording, the album was mixed at Studio Rudas in DĂŒsseldorf. The cover of the album produced in white, red and black and the design was highly inspired by the Russian artist El Lissitzky, and the moment named Suprematism. The cover shows the band members dressed in red shirts and black ties. Great website on Kraftwerk publications etc.
The Man Machine
The tune from the album Das Model or âThe Model should become one of the most selling records in Kraftwerk history, and the song is also a classic tune for the dance floor. Many of Kraftwerk cover art designed by German multi-artist and painter Emil Schult, his unique signature style highlighting his role in pioneering the unique aesthetic that eventually came to represent not just Kraftwerk, but an entire style ethos of the period, copied and admired still today. Schult style can remind of Russian communist propaganda posters; however, on acid as many of his paintings shows a dream of space or even an urge to break out of the strict frame of the design.
On 21 November 2008, Kraftwerk officially confirmed Florian Schneiderâs departure from the band; Floridan is one of the original members from the start. Kraftwerk has not only a pioneer electronic music but pushed the limits of music technology with some notable innovations, such as custom-built devices and self-made instruments. The Kling Klang studio has always been perceived as a complex music instrument as well as a sound laboratory; especially Florian Schneider developed a fascination for music technology, sponsored by computer brands as IBM and Sony. Donatella Versace used the theme of Kraftwerk âThe Man-Machineâ in their menswear line to create a contemporary spin. Alexandre Plokhov head of menswear at Versace, he ushered in a new skinny tailored silhouette. Lean black suits were worn with high-necked red shirts or T-shirts for a look that channeled the German band Kraftwerk.
 Immortalized
Kraftwerk was immortalized when they were performing eight shows at the Museum of Modern Art April 10th through April 17th, 2012 and Tate Modern, the concert sold out so fast the ShowClix servers crashed. I guess almost every single artist was visiting MoMA or Tate Modern for one or more Kraftwerk concerts; from REMâs Michael Stipe, shipping scion Stavros Niarchos and curator Vito Schnabel, consisted mainly of male hipsters, art types and electronic enthusiasts in a series of concerts understood as âa visual and phonic feast. Kraftwerk finally released The Catalogue box set on 16 November 2009, a 12? LP-sized box set containing all eight mastered CDs in cardboard slipcases, as well as LP-sized booklets of photographs and artwork for each individual album.

New top story from Time: âShe Asked Me Right From the Start to Do the White Shirt.â Designer Misha Nonoo on Working with Meghan Markle for Her New Fashion Collection
On Thursday, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, unveiled a new capsule collection she helped put together as the patron of Smart Works, a U.K. charity that helps women prepare for employment opportunities with free clothes and job training. The collection is five pieces: a blazer, slacks, résumé-friendly tote bag, work dress and crisp white collared shirt, each designed with different brand partners and intended to help women create a fail-safe working wardrobe. The collection is available in inclusive sizing options, and for every item purchased, another is donated to Smart Works, giving someone access to new apparel for a fresh start.
That white shirt in particular â a fashion item frequently worn by Meghan Markle herself â happens to be made in partnership with Misha Nonoo, a fashion designer with a documented friendship with Markle. Nonoo, whose white shirts are a longtime staple of her brand and what she calls a wardrobe âlynchpin,â told TIME that the Duchess approached her early in the year after she was named patron of the charity in January. Markle has a special relationship with Nonooâs popular âHusbandâ shirt: it was the top she wore on her first official, photographed outing with Prince Harry back in 2017.
WPA PoolâGetty ImagesMeghan, Duchess of Sussex poses for a photograph with women dressed in clothes from the Smart Works capsule collection during the collectionâs launch on September 12, 2019 in London, England.
âShe asked me right from the start to do the white shirt, as thatâs kind of our signature,â Nonoo explained, âand I said Iâd be delighted to. She was incredible, the consummate professional in allowing me to really design the piece and giving me guidelines and guidance about the women, the clients and what the piece had to fulfill in terms of day-to-day life.â
Nonoo says she wanted to produce something that was âtailored, but modern,â without a traditional French dart or other details that would make it âa little too classic,â and would function for both work and weekend wear. A new challenge was developing a shirt that would fit well for the inclusive size range; it goes up to a size 22 U.S. (This is one more example of a contemporary push for more inclusive sizing options in fashion, an initiative that celebrities like Serena Williams, another friend of Markleâs, have also championed this week.) After getting to work, Nonooâs finished product was a hit: âLuckily, she was very happy with it,â Nonoo says of Markleâs response.
Dylan Rivesâ2015 Getty ImagesMisha Nonoo prepares backstage at the CFDA Incubator show and cocktail party at W South Beach For SWIMMIAMI 2016 on July 18, 2015.
For Markle, launching this capsule collection is the latest chapter in her charitable work with U.K. womenâs organizations. Last fall, she released a community cookbook with the women of the Hubb Kitchen, who were impacted by the 2017 Grenfell fire. âSince moving to the U.K., it has been deeply important to me to meet with communities and organizations on the ground doing meaningful work and to try to do whatever I can to help them amplify their impact,â the Duchess shared in a statement. âIn convening several companies rather than one, weâve demonstrated how we can work collectively to empower each other â another layer to this communal success story, that I am so proud to be a part of.â
Nonoo agrees: âThe more that people can use their businesses as platforms for change, the better,â she says. For her part, sheâs happy to be involved. âItâs really extraordinary how the Duchess is using her platform to support causes like this,â she says. âI can honestly say, hand on heart, that Iâm so honored to be a part of that and to see these womenâs lives changed for the better as a result.â
For the launch event in London on Thursday, Markleâs first official engagement since giving birth to her first child with Prince Harry in May, Markle wore the new shirt from the collection, and Nonoo wore the husband shirt.

Toronto alt-pop artist GRAE is back with a brand new EP and weâre here for it. Permanent Maniac is a six-song collection that includes pre-release singles Ex Lovers and Slow Down (featured in the New Music Spotlight in April).
The standout track on EP release day though is the title track which kicks off the EP and has a new official video to go with it.
Check out the video for the title track, Permanent Maniac, now!
GRAE â Permanent Maniac
youtube
In a release day email, GRAE talked about Permanent Maniac (the song) and said, âPermanent Manic is a love letter to Robert Smith from The Cure. Iâve had a real obsession with him since I was a teenager and even went through a phase where I did my makeup like him and dressed like him. The Cureâs music hits me in a way like nothing else has, and Iâm so inspired by Robert, his sound, his writing. This song is about how I love him, and heâll never know. Permanent Maniac is definitely the vibe Iâve been trying so hard to create for a long time. So, thank you once again, Robert Smith (if youâre reading this, I love you).â
At just under 20 minutes, the Permanent Maniac EP isnât a long listen, but it gets the job done. Yes, selfishly we wish it was twice as long, but more than that, weâre happy to see GRAE get these songs released as a collection and take the next step in her growing career.
Having had the chance to see her live (opening for RALPH), we know that she can put on a show and we look forward to the chance to see her do it again when the world gets back to normal. We want to hear these songs live, watch her perform, and maybe get a taste of whatâs going to come next.
GRAE, live at Mod Club (Toronto), December 5, 2019
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
The Toronto artist is making a name for herself with placements on Nancy Drew, Queen Sugar, LAâs Finest, The Real World Atlanta, and The Bold Type â and she is a SOCAN Young Canadian Songwriters Award winner. So if you havenât heard GRAE yet, now is a great time to get in.
Check out the tracklist for Permanent Maniac and hit play to listen to all six songs now!

Hunter McGradyâs All Worthy Collection At QVC Comes In Sizes 0-36
I started following Hunter McGrady on Instagram at the recommendation of my sister. She said McGrady stood out from the other influencers crowding her feed, and it didnât take long for me to figure out why. Her sunny disposition, daily Stories updates, and of course, some pretty bomb in-feed modeling shots had me stanning her just as hard. Even then, it was easy to see McGrady as more than a model and influencerâshe gave off big-time change-maker vibes. Itâs exactly this energy that I have no doubt served as fuel for her latest endeavor: Hunter McGradyâs All Worthy Collection, a QVC exclusive line available in sizes 0 to 36. Yes, thatâs XXS through 5X. See what I mean when I say this girl is a change-maker?
McGrady got her start in the modeling world at age 16 as a size 2, 6-foot-tall stunner, and made the switch to plus-size modeling at the request of her agency at age 19. With the new role came a change of perspective, too:Â âI think that was the most transformative few years of my life, because I learned a lot about myself, my mental health, and all of that comes along with it,â says McGrady, who adds that she felt mixed emotions at first.
âI was like, you know what? If this is what modeling is going to be, then I donât think I can be a part of this. I donât think that this is something that I can keep up,â she admits. âSo through therapy, and learning who I am, what my body can do and where my bodyâs supposed to be, I was able to slip into what I believe is the body I was meant to be in all along.â As if she needed proof of this, McGrady booked Sports Illustrated two years later, and her career skyrocketed.
QVC.
Fast-forward a few years, and McGrady knew she wanted to branch out beyond modeling. âI have always been passionate about fashion, and Iâve always really wanted to get my feet wet and kind of dive right in and be in the forefront of it. So during this time in late 2018, I started discussing with my team who I could work with, who gets my vision, who understands what I want to do,â she says. Eventually, she landed on QVCâthe company has been praised for their inclusive sizing options, with many of their brands available in sizes up to 3X-5X. Of course, McGrady wouldnât settle for anything less.
McGrady isnât a fair-weather activist in the slightestâsheâs deadset on making positive change happen within the industry. Just last year, she changed up her Fashion Week routine and vowed to only attend and/or model in shows that were diverse and inclusive. Needless to say, her schedule freed up a little too quickly. âOf course, it became a lot more sparse than in prior Fashion Weeks, but thatâs a stand that I feel like I have to take in order for any change to be made,â McGrady insists. âI think that the more that we take that standâand yes, it may suck for the time being, and it may be uncomfortable, and we may miss out on shows that are dreams of oursâbut you know, the greater outcome, itâs a more positive world for everybody.â
â
Fashion doesnât stop at a size 14.
â
With this in mind, itâs easy to see why McGrady landed on âAll Worthyâ as the name for her own line. âVery few designers have really got onboard with expanding their sizes above an XL or a size 14,â she says, âand theyâre missing out on a big customer. Theyâre missing out on more than half of the population. Fashion doesnât stop at a size 14.â
McGrady isnât slowing down her attempts to get the industry to be more inclusive, but in the meantime, sheâs throwing her own hat in the ring with All Worthy. In addition to being size-inclusive, thereâs a lot to choose from fashion-wise, as well. âA lot of times, people ask me, âWhat is your style?â And for me, I think thatâs whatâs so fun about fashion is that you donât have to stick to a certain style if you donât want to,â explains McGrady. âYou know, one day I wake up and Iâm wearing a maxi dress and, you know, a flower crown, and then the next day Iâm wearing leather pants and a leather jacket.â
QVC.
To ensure she made the perfect range, McGrady used her 642K Instagram followers as a soundboard. âI had been asking my following for the last year and a half what they wanted, what they were missing, why they wanted it, why they felt it was missing, what kind of person they are, who are they,â she said. âI just said, âHey, listen, drop it in my DM, or drop it in the box. Let me know your dream piece, or let me know what you think isnât out there or available for you.ââ
PSA to anyone looking to launch a successful brand: McGradyâs Insta-approach was the right move. âIt was great because I got answers from all different size women as well. So I was really able to compile what I thought was kind of the common denominator, which was quite a few things.â All of which, of course, have made their way into the All Worthy lineup. âWe have everything from power suits for the businesswoman, to flirty and floral dresses, to leather jackets, to jeans, to athleisure,â she raves. âI mean, we literally have everything coming, because me as a plus-sized woman, Iâm missing everything in my closet.â
QVC.
McGrady is an open book when it comes to modeling, body positivity, inclusivity, and of course, All Worthy. The only thing she wonât tell me? Her most-loved piece from the line. âTheyâre like my babies, so itâs hard to choose between one!â she insists, and after browsing the clothes myself, I understand why.
To shop All Worthy before it inevitably sells out, check out the QVC site now, and be on the lookout for even more chic drops in the coming months. Take a peek at my faves for summer below.
 1. Snake Print Asymmetrical Hem Skirt
QVC.
Iâm into snake print year-round, but I especially love this lighter white and tan colorway for summer.
 2. Button Front Sleeveless Blazer Dress
QVC.
Pro Tip: According to McGrady, you can also style this piece open and wear it like a long vest.
 3. Chiffon Dress with Ladder Lace Insets
QVC.
A surefire staple for every wardrobe. Plus, it comes in black, too!

International restaurant chain Fogo de ChĂŁo recently opened in Carle Place.
Traditional steakhouse culture is one that is a carnivoreâs delight, where the clientele is extensively made up of white male businessmen and the idea of greens is generally limited to a wedge of iceberg lettuce with blue cheese dressing and a tomato slice if youâre lucky. Diners seeking more than that count themselves lucky if they can order a side of steamed broccoli or creamed spinach.
Turning that concept on its head is Fogo de ChĂŁo, a fine dining, full-service churrascaria which uses a rodĂzio style of serving, which involves roving waiters toting barbecued meats on large skewers that are brought table side. The international restaurant chain recently opened its first Long Island location in Carle Place. The 10,000-square foot space boasts 110 staff members scurrying around, serving guests and providing exemplary customer service in ensuring no requests are left unmet. The mood is set by bossa nova music, welcoming you into a warm atmosphere marked by high ceilings, a dark wood decor and a large main dining area with private and semiprivate rooms on the perimeter. Itâs a culture of hospitality that is a Fogo hallmark and enabled this unique dining experience to continue growing 40 years after it was founded in the Brazilian countryside community of Porto Alegre by a pair of siblings, Jorge and Alexio Ongaratto and Jair and Arri Coser. But optics alone are not the sole reason for Fogoâs success. Itâs the quality, quantity and variety that also welcome guests whose dietary needs are gluten-free and meatless. All this at a restaurant whose name translates to âground fireâ and reflects the traditional gaĂșcho method of roasting meats over an open fire. Itâs something Fogo CEO Barry McGowan is rightfully proud of.
âIâm a healthy eater so I donât have much time. I can walk right into a Fogo de ChĂŁo and have lunch for $15 and order anything I want at the Market Table, which includes smoke salmon and prosciutto. I eat whole foods a lot because of the whole trans-density of it so I eat a lot of beets, broccoli and quinoa. Our menu has a pretty diverse offering for somebody who is vegetarian or vegan,â he said. âWeâve got a vegan cauliflower steak thatâs awesome. We are much more than a steakhouse. Weâre really accommodating to anyoneâs dietary needs and that drives the occasion why you want to come back. But one thing that weâre adamant about is the high quality of food with a lot of flavor. We really pour on the southern Brazilian hospitality and thatâs really what we like to do.â
The aforementioned Market Table is a cornerstone of this all-you-can-eat experience and is inspired by the grand kitchen tables on the farms of southern Brazil. It is nearly 100 percent gluten-free and has boatloads of raw fruits and vegetables along with specialty salads (lentil quinoa, quinoa tabouleh, apple salad), seasonal recipes (butternut kale salad, butternut and sweet potato soup, pear and endive salad) and a wide selection of antipasti (pickled onions, Peppadew peppers, marinated artichokes, mixed olives with citrus herbs, sundried tomatoes). Protein options include extensive charcuterie options of cured meats (Calabrese salami, Parma ham leg, imported prosciutto, Spanish chorizo) and aged and imported cheeses (manchego, smoked provolone, baby Swiss, Monte Caputoâsemi-hard Brazilian sheep and cowâs milk cheese) along with assorted accompaniments (whole grain mustard, fig jam, caper berries, cornichons). Not to be missed is the smoked salmon, black pepper candied bacon and fogo feijoda, a traditional black bean stew with sausage served over white rice. It can be seasoned with fresh orange, hot sauce and farofa or baked yuca flour with bacon.

Skewered meat is served tableside. (Photo by Cyndi Zaweski)
But lest you fill up at the Market Table, be sure to leave room for an endless onslaught of beef, pork, lamb and chicken. Every table is a chefâs table at Fogo; the gaĂșcho chef who carves guestsâ fire-roasted meat tableside is the same chef who butchered it, simply seasoned it and grilled it from start to finish. Part of the fixed price system is making use of a tabletop card, green to indicate the diner wants more meat and red signaling that guests have had enough to eat for the moment. Tableside is where non-beef selections include cordeiro (lamb), costela de porco (pork ribs), frango (chicken), lombo (pork loin), linguiça (spicy pork sausage) and pork picanha. But beef is Fogoâs culinary bread and butter. Top cuts are used, preparation is minimal with the delectable outcome partially attributed to the expert way heat is applied throughout the grilling process. Costela (beef ribs), fraldinha (bottom sirloin), alcatra (top sirloin), beef ancho (ribeye) and filet mignon are go-tos but it is picanha (prime part of the sirloin) that is Fogoâs signature steak. Lightly seasoned with rock salt and sliced thin, it is tender with a robust flavor.
Just as diverse as the menu is the clientele.
âForty percent of our clientele is female and 16 percent are actually family,â McGowan said. âWeâre heavily millennial and next generational.â
Itâs a big part of what the father of three enjoys when he takes his family out to weekend brunch after church back home in Texas.
Fogo de ChĂŁo
âI tell everyone that weâre more than a steakhouse. I think when you discover Fogo, you experience that, especially when youâre with other people. I tell everybody to look around the dining area and see who else is enjoying Fogo. Itâs very diverse. Weâre not your normal steakhouse where itâs normally people in suit and ties and no family,â he said. âWe also have more ethnicityâmore people of different races and colors. Iâll just say this, what I love about Fogo is that itâs a very international brand. Itâs representative of the people that dine with us because you start to hear the different languages and you see the experience. So really, when you pull back to what separates us when you walk in, itâs not just the experience but the idea that you can have a filet or a rib-eye in any steakhouse. But you canât go in any steakhouse and have a filet, a rib-eye, lamb chops, fraldinha, picanha, palmittosâall of this is included. But really, itâs just accommodating to anybody that youâre with.â
Part of that dining flexibility is Bar Fogo, which does more than just serve cold adult beverages. Its Monday through Friday happy hour is where patrons can tuck into a sizable $8 picanha burger and wash it down with a caipirinha, Brazilâs national cocktail, which consists of cachaça (sugarcane hard liquor), sugar and lime. Equally delectable are the free servings of pĂŁo de queijo, Brazilian cheese dinner rolls that are a delicious staple.
If variety is the spice of life, itâs also the lifeblood pumping through Fogo de ChĂŁo and what McGowan says is key to his companyâs success.
âThe food is delivered in a way that is customized to the individual. Something we say is that your first bite of every dish is the best. At Fogo de ChĂŁo, every bite is your first bite. The flavor, the craveability and the experience are all high,â he explained. âThe hospitality is high and Iâll say thisâall that equates to very strong value for your money. This is where I think we compete well and this is why we have a 40-year longevity. We really focus more on the guests in front of us. Unlike most places around today, weâre pouring more into that.â
Fogo de ChĂŁo is located at 235 Old Country Rd. in Carle Place. Visit www.fogodechao.com or call 516-588-7100 for more information.
Fogo de ChĂŁo is redefining steakhouse culture. Long Island Weekly's Dave Gil de Rubio chats with Fogo CEO Barry McGowan about the new Carle Place restaurant. Traditional steakhouse culture is one that is a carnivoreâs delight, where the clientele is extensively made up of white male businessmen and the idea of greens is generally limited to a wedge of iceberg lettuce with blue cheese dressing and a tomato slice if youâre lucky.

You finally made it to Tokyo. Where do you possibly start?
The Japanese capitol is swimming with a whopping 38 million people. Youâre likely overwhelmed and tired. So tired. The jetlag is a painstaking reality after your 12 hour (maybe longer) haul.
Depending on the time of day you arrive â you might want to take a power nap. I did and it saved me. After a quick disco nap â I could face the glorious mania that I came to see.
Shibuya Crossing
No other place in Tokyo highlights the sheer madness of the city better than Shibuya Crossing. Some accurately refer to it as the Shibuya Scramble.  People literally seap from every imaginable angle.  Picture Times Square on crack. Each street light has an estimated â2500 people crossingâ at any given time.
Shibuya Crossing
Shibuya Crossing
Shibuya Crossing
Shibuya has lots of night life: restaurants, clubs and izakaya (informal Japanese bars).
Kobe Beef (a quick lesson).
We had our first dinner in Shibuya. Â Of course, we went straight for the mouth watering Kobe beef. Not to be missed. The infamous Wagyu (meaning: Japanese Cattle) is good but Kobe (a strain of Wagyu) is a whole other off-the-chain level of goodness.
To be labelled Kobe, cattle must meet the following criteria:
Bullock (steer) or virgin cow.
Tajima-Gyu born within Hyogo Prefecture.
Fed on a farm within Hyogo Prefecture.
Meat processed within Hyogo Prefecture.
Marbling rating (BMS) of 6 or higher on a 12 point scale.
Meat quality rating of 4 or higher on a 5 point scale.
An overall weight not exceeding 470 kg.

Just eat it. Once it melts in your mouth, youâll forget the price tag.
Tsukiji Market
You have to hit the fish market when in Tokyo. If youâre a sushi aficionado â it will blow your mind. If youâre not a sushi lover â then you might be in the wrong city.
To be clear â Tsukiji Market no longer holds the famous tuna auction. Tsukiji is a sprawling outdoor street market. The tuna auction has moved to the brand new Toyosu Market (indoor). If you want to watch the tuna auction â you must apply to the online lottery.
Time your visit so you can have lunch at Tsukiji. Itâs teeming with all types of traditional Japanese food but itâs best known for sushi.

Lots of Temples
Zojoji Temple
Nestled amid sakura (cherry blossom) trees in the heart of Tokyo is where youâll find this little gem.
The temple is the burial ground for six Tokugawa (Edo) shoguns. The shoguns ruled through the Edo period (1603 to 1867), the final era of traditional Japanese government, culture and society. The long reigning shoguns (supreme military leaders) ruled for over 250 years.
Next to the Temple is a garden rowed with small stone statues called Jizos. The sweet faced Jizo statues wear little red knit hats and sometimes bibs. They are beautiful â some are adorned with beads and others have trinkets and flowers next to them. Sadly, the Jizo represent miscarried, still born, or children who died young. In general, the Jizo is said to protect over all lost souls.
The Daibonshu Bell
Cast in 1673, it weighs 15 tonnes and tolls 6 times twice a day.
Daibonshu Bell
The Zojoji Temple is also beside the Tokyo Tower.Â
Seisho-ji Temple
Not far from Zojoji is Seisho-ji Temple in the heart of Tokyo cloaked by skyscapers. This is a peaceful place of medidation and seems to be off the tourist radar.
Roppongi Hills
A short walk from the Tokyo Tower and the downtown temples will put you in Roppongi Hills. Â A trendy urbanization with apartments, cafes, restaurants and shops. Also, a great place to view the sakura blossoms in April.

Takeshita Street
Takeshita Street is an pedestrian shopping street in the Harajuko District of Tokyo. Itâs known for itâs colourful whimsical shops â popular with teens. Itâs also a haven for sweet lovers. Candy shop after candy shop adorn this zany strip.

Yoyogi Park
Near Shibuya Crossing is Yogogi Park. A sprawling park with loads of green space and lots of people. Also home to the Meiji Shrine, a Shinto shrine dedicated to Emperor Meiji and his wife.
Senso-ji Temple
Tokyoâs oldest Buddhist temple dating back to the 7th Century. It was heaving with people so I took a pic from across the street.

Honourable Mention
Akihabara â âElectric Townâ
This is a shopping street with every electric gadget you can dream up. Â Sorry, no pics.
Where to Stay
We stayed in Tokyo Bay which was perfect. Itâs a little removed from the madness of say Shibuya and other downtown areas. Yet itâs walking distance to Tokyo Tower, Zojoji Temple, and Tsukiji Market.
About Tokyo
There is very little English spoken. If taking a taxi, have the name of your destination on paper and present it to the driver. Note: d/t the upcoming 2020 Olympics â English street signs are being put up.
The taxis are clean, drivers are well dressed and typically wear white gloves. Taxis are reasonable if travelling en masse, as we do.
The subway system is meant to be really efficient and reasonable. But see above: 38 million people in the city. I didnât go anywhere near the subway.
Tokyo is clean. I found myself carrying around my rubbish (sometimes for blocks) before finding a bin. A bit inconvenient but it works. The streets are spotless.
Traffic is not that bad. Most people donât seem to own cars and travel by subway. You can actually move around the city quite efficiently in a taxi.
You must have an International Drivers License to rent a car. Not something you likely want to do in Tokyo, but we ran into problems later in the trip.
The currency is Japanese Yen. Quite a few places donât take credit cards, and International ATMS are found in all 7/11 stores. Weird, I know.
Despite the tens of million of people  â your personal space is respected.  Nobody pushes or crowds and somehow pedestrian traffic flows without mayhem.
Japanese 101
Itâs important to know a few words in the language of the country youâre visiting. Simple manners go a long way â wherever you are.
A few simple words that will win a smile every time:
Hello â Konnichiwa
Good bye â Sayounara
Thank you â Arigatou
Please â Kudasai
Good morning â Ohayo
Good night â Oyasumi
Excuse me â Sumimasen
I hope you liked this post.
Pleaes stay tuned forâŠ.
