3 Reasons Why Accountants Should Move to an Advisory Job
Todayâs businesses are increasingly looking to their accounting firms for services beyond accounting, auditing, and compliance. They want a true advisorâsomeone to help guide their financial future and evaluate all different types of transactions.
This has created an opportunity for todayâs accountants, one that some will find alluring, provocative, and potentially lucrative. But for many, it presents a challenging question: Should you keep your career on a traditional accounting or auditing path, or should you move to a job with more of an advisory function?
This is one of those questions akin to âWhat do you call that sweet carbonated stuff people drink out of a can?â Some will say soda, some pop. And neither of them are wrong. (Except for those weird people in the South who call everything âCoke,â regardless of the brand of the drink. âYou want a Coke? What flavor do you want, Sprite?â Theyâre wrong. So very wrong.)
Much of the decision between accounting and advisory will be based on your individual wants, needs, and personality. Do you want to play the background singer, providing the harmonies and rhythms that make the group shine? Or do you want to be more of a lead singer, belting out solos that make the crowd go wild?
If youâre feeling like Malcolm, still stuck somewhere in the middle, weâve got you covered. Weâre going to look at some of the advantages of taking an advisory role. And hopefully, by the time weâre done, youâll have a better idea if an advisory job is right for you.
(Sidenote: Did you know we never learned the familyâs last name in Malcolm in the Middle? OR where they live? Thatâs weird, right? And which is weirder, that the showâs creators made that choice and stuck by it through seven seasons, or that most people never noticed? These are questions weâll never answer, so we better get back to accounting versus advisory.)
1. Feel the impact of your work
In a traditional accounting or auditing job, especially at large firms, itâs often difficult to see the concrete impact of your labor. Yes, the books are closed or the audit is complete, but who did that help? And how?
âAt a big accounting firm, as an auditor youâre really only in there to give clients an opinion on their financials,â said Pavan Satyaketu, managing director and founder of Advaion, a fast-growing consulting firm with offices in New York City and Fort Lauderdale, Fla. âYouâre doing an audit. Now especially, you canât even make formal suggestions as to how they can improve their business operations.â
At an advisory job, however, youâll work directly with clients to enhance their decision-making and help them grow. Youâll see the results of your labor every day as you watch your clients make smarter transactions, enter new markets, add staff, and overtake their competitors.
Like Obi-Wan, youâll guide them away from the dark side and teach them to use their powers for good.
âWeâre enacting change, and weâre more forward-looking as opposed to backward-looking. Weâre actually working with our clients to make changes to their businesses and we often function as an extension of their management teams rather than as third parties,â Satyaketu said.
When your client brings on customers faster, expands its locations, or successfully launches an initial public offering, you can point to that and say, âI helped with that. My hard work made that happen.â And thatâs a feeling you wonât often have if you stick to traditional accounting and audit work.
2. Expand your skill set
In a traditional accounting or audit role, it can be easy to get complacent about your skill set. Sure, you need to keep up with the latest advances in technology and regulatory changes, but numbers are numbers. If youâre going to do accounting or auditing work for the rest of your life, why learn any new skills, like marketing or enterprise technology?
And thatâs perfectly fine for accountants who want to take that path. But if youâre unsure what the future of your career holds, itâs smart to develop as many skills as you possibly can. Doing so broadens your future possibilities and puts you in the driverâs seat to be a world-class leader. Moving to an advisory job will help you expand your skill set, exposing you to tasks and departments youâd never be involved with in a traditional accounting or auditing role.
Itâs like when Marty refuses to race Needles at the end of Back to the Future Part III. He erases his bitter future as a broken-down middle manager and opens a new destiny of unlimited possibilities. (Weâre not saying sticking to traditional accounting will give you a sad, old-Marty future, just that advisory can enable you to take a lot of different paths.)
As an advisor, youâll be asked to help improve your clientsâ operations, enhance their financial reporting, and implement new systems. This will require you to develop a host of new skills, but it will also expose you to business functions and larger management strategies that will be hugely beneficial to your career.
âIf you work at Advaion, you actually get to see the big picture of each company,â Satyaketu said. âWorking with the different departments in the client organization gives you a sense of how a company operates. If you want to become a leader, that knowledge will be invaluable, as it allows you to understand an organization as a whole rather that just one silo.â

3. Enjoy a friendly client dynamic
Most clients love hearing from their advisors. Youâll often get to be the bearer of good news. And in cases where you have to tell them something negative, theyâll know youâre just looking out for their best interests and will usually take it in stride.
Thatâs because, as an advisor, youâll be working synergistically with clients to help them move their business forward. Theyâll see you as an enabler of success rather than a regulatory requirement. Over time, youâll develop a cheerful rapport with your clientsâand perhaps even build friendships.
âWe are our clientsâ advocates. This leads to immediate connections, immediate relationships. And itâs not adversarial or anything like thatâitâs collaborative. They want us there. Our clients get excited when they know weâre coming to see them,â Satyaketu said.
Advaion: The perfect place to begin or expand your advisory career
If youâve decided a job with an advisory or consulting function may be right for you, consider applying for a job at Advaion. (Links to open positions at Advaion are available at the bottom of this article.)
For more than a decade, Advaion has served as a trusted advisor for clients in several industries. The independent consulting firmâs staff is comprised primarily of former Big 4 business professionalsâso if youâre currently working at one of the Big 4, you may be exactly the recruit Advaion is looking for.
At Advaion, youâll provide your clients with the most up-to-date information related to regulatory, compliance, management, and technology trends. Youâll foster a relationship of trust with your clients, helping them make smarter financial decisions and grow their businesses.
Many of Advaionâs clients are going through significant growth, looking to update their systems, seeking investor funding, preparing for an IPO, and/or struggling to maintain compliance. As an advisor at Advaion, youâll give your clients a competitive edge by identifying opportunities, making data-based recommendations, and guiding them through complex situations.
And if that isnât enough to entice you, Advaion also treats its employees with respect and kindness, helping them succeed in both their work lives and personal lives.
âWe pay 100% of our health benefits to our employees. We allow employees to contribute to vest in their 401(k) on day oneâno waiting periods. We try not to have anyone work over 45 hours a week. We monitor that continuously. We really believe that to be successful as a business, we need to take care of our employees first and everything else will fall into place,â Satyaketu said.
Advaion is dedicated to employee advancement, empowering its staff through mentoring, education, meaningful project work, and employee growth planning.
If youâre worried youâll struggle to make the transition from accounting to advisory work, donât fretâAdvaion has your back.
âOnboarding is fast. As an accountant or auditor, you already understand the basics of how advisory works. Weâll start you on projects that are similar to what you were already doing, and then slowly move you into other things. Itâs a very natural transition,â Satyaketu said.
So ultimately, how do you know if an advisory job at Advaion is right for you?
âIf you want to do day-to-day accounting, closing the books, doing debits and credits, this is not for you,â Satyaketu said. âBut if you want to do bigger-picture stuff, if you want to build those broader skill sets, if you want to help take a company to the next level, come work at Advaion. Weâd be glad to have you, and weâre betting youâll be glad you joined.â

Brad Parscale Fell From Trumpâs Favor. Now Heâs Plotting a Comeback. Brad Parscale was sounding upbeat. He has a brand new firm and, he believes, a brighter future. Mr. Parscale, President Trumpâs former marketing campaign supervisor, mentioned he was making an attempt to maneuver on from that bleak Sunday in late September when he made the nationwide newscasts, after police have been known as to his residence in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. His spouse informed officers he was inside the home, ranting, performing erratically, with a loaded and cocked gun. Now heâs turning to actual property and plans to purchase homes and flip them, he mentioned in an interview this month, one thing he mentioned he was good at. Heâs additionally restarting his political consulting agency, Parscale Technique, and making an attempt to kick off a start-up known as Nucleus, to course of and analyze knowledge for conservative politicians. âI spent 5 years creating the one automated web-based ecosystem that linked all our departments and made our marketing campaign essentially the most environment friendly in historical past,â Mr. Parscale mentioned. âAnd now I need to convey this know-how to campaigns all all over the world whoâre proper of middle.â As soon as a midlevel advertising and marketing government in San Antonio, Mr. Parscale rose to the presidentâs internal circle and was hailed, considerably hyperbolically, because the tech genius whose social media savvy received Mr. Trump the 2016 election. Mr. Parscale turned knowledgeable in making the Trump marketing campaign messages â typically gut-churning and merciless, different occasions patriotic and nostalgic â go wildly viral, and his darkish humor appeared in tune with Mr. Trump and his meme-making fan base. However individuals who know and labored with Mr. Parscale say he grew too enamored together with his proximity to energy, and naĂŻvely comfy together with his insider standing, which rested on the whims of a mercurial president. When he was changed as marketing campaign supervisor in July amid questions on his stewardship, significantly his spending selections, it was an embarrassing blow. In current telephone interviews, Mr. Parscale, 44, mentioned he felt demonized by the left, which accused him of digital darkish arts he didnât make use of, and scapegoated by the appropriate for Mr. Trumpâs failed marketing campaign. âThey willât select: Am I wealthy or am I poor? Am I dumb or am I good?â Mr. Parscale mentioned of his political adversaries. He has toggled between frustration that he stays a supply of public curiosity and an incapability to avoid the highlight. After his private points burst into public, he retreated, telling those who he was blissful to depart the rat race behind, and that a minimum of he has choices as a result of he has cash. He mentioned he had not gone into rehab, as had been rumored, and was not getting divorced. However he was offended about how issues went down, and wished to dwell âoff the grid,â away from the glare of high-stakes politics. âIâm completed with that trade,â he mentioned final month. âItâs a nasty trade. Iâve all the time been into properties. Thatâs the place Iâve invested. And Iâve good style.â However his preliminary impulse to jettison politics altogether quickly gave option to the gravitational pull of the sport: In a dialog a number of weeks later, he had modified his thoughts. He was beginning Nucleus. A Serendipitous Pairing Mr. Parscaleâs exit from the Trump marketing campaign might hardly have been extra horrifying. A police video from the afternoon of Sept. 27 confirmed Mr. Parscale â shirtless, barefoot, carrying a baseball hat and holding a beer â as he talked to the police after rising from his residence. A cut up second later, a police officer tackled him, smashing his shoulder and chest into Mr. Parscaleâs hips, driving him to the bottom with a thud. A couple of minutes earlier his spouse, Candice Parscale, in a swimsuit and a towel, had proven officers bruises on her arms, the physique digicam footage exhibits. She mentioned her husband had prompted the bruises, in line with the police report. The video made the night information exhibits and shortly went viral. Mr. Parscale was taken to the hospital and launched. His spouse later recanted her statements from that day. Had the tables been turned that day and it was not Mr. Parscale who was the topic of the story, maybe if it have been a Democratic operative who had been tackled as a substitute, the video is simply the type of content material that Mr. Parscale may need rapidly pumped into the information ecosystem, the way in which he did on numerous events for Donald J. Trump. The story of how Mr. Parscale got here to work for Mr. Trump is serendipity, plus a bit of of Mr. Parscaleâs opportunistic savvy. He was already a profitable advertising and marketing government, well-known within the enterprise circles of San Antonio, when about ten years in the past certainly one of his purchasers was on a flight subsequent to somebody who was about to take a job working for the Trump household. The consumer jotted contact information on an airplane serviette, and shortly Mr. Parscale was looped in to bid on some digital work for the household. He reduce his fee to ensure he would get the job. Mr. Parscale and the Trump household clicked, and when the presidential marketing campaign began, he was the plain option to deal with the web site and digital promoting. One other bit of fine fortune for Mr. Parscale: He would inherit a knowledge operation from the Republican Social gathering that had been completely overhauled, and he had the proper candidate to check out the brand new system. Mr. Trump had restricted assets and few knowledge concepts of his personal. He didnât have an enormous current digital crew. He simply had Mr. Parscale, who had no expertise in politics. What Mr. Parscale had was the belief of the presidentâs household, and a eager sense of the presidentâs voice and fondness for discord, which he wasnât afraid to take advantage of. His lack of understanding made him particularly open to a strong device for reaching voters: Fb. Whereas others spent on tv advertisements and hiring enormous groups, Mr. Parscale noticed that Fb advertisements have been cheaper and radically efficient at reaching Trump voters. He determined to lean on Fb for analytics somewhat than hiring a big crew of his personal. âWhat Brad did was say, âWeâre not going to ever be capable of construct it, so weâre simply going to outsource all these items to Fb itself, they usuallyâll run our advert marketing campaign,ââ mentioned Daniel Kreiss, an affiliate professor on the College of North Carolina and the creator of âPrototype Politics: Know-how-Intensive Campaigning and the Information of Democracy.â âThat was Bradâs true innovation.â His genius was in making provocative content material, modifying it into fast-moving clips and testing it rapidly to determine the appropriate tempo and tone. He knew how you can choose the appropriate music for the video, the appropriate textual content for the meme (perhaps totally different textual content in Florida than in Ohio), after which sending it full drive into the nationâs bloodstream by way of Fb. James Barnes, whom Fb despatched to San Antonio to work with Mr. Parscale, mentioned the marketing campaign tapped into what labored very properly on Fb: messages that stir outrage, worry, panic and a way of victimhood. That was the message of Mr. Trumpâs marketing campaign as properly. âLoads of Individuals simply discovered Trump interesting and the marketing campaign had comparatively good instruments to determine who responded to what,â mentioned Mr. Barnes, who by 2020 had left Fb and was working for a progressive nonprofit to defeat Mr. Trump. âThat was it.â Mr. Parscale pushes again on the concept Fb basically ran the marketing campaign, phrasing it extra as a particular partnership. âWe requested Fb for a guide, they usually offered us a human one, which was extraordinarily useful,â Mr. Parscale mentioned. He mentioned his specific talent was in harnessing the emotional cost of the Trump marketing campaign, translating the craze and nostalgia into content material that will unfold. âAmericana labored,â he mentioned. âSimply Americana. âConvey again that America pleasureâ labored. Photos of an area shuttle. Half my advertisements simply seem like a Fourth of July get together with a Vietnam vet. I wasnât some mad genius.â A âFetishizationâ of Information Within the shock of Mr. Trumpâs 2016 win, liberals and pundits wished to know the way it had occurred and regarded towards Silicon Valley. In some way, they mentioned, Individuals should have been tricked into that vote. A mystique grew round Mr. Parscale. âSecret Weapon,â introduced CBS Information. âBrad Parscale, digital director for Trumpâs marketing campaign, was a vital issue within the presidentâs election. Now questions encompass how he did it.â âThereâs a fetishization of information that enables usually good folks to cease pondering and settle for the phrases of a digital shaman,â mentioned Ben Coffey Clark, a founding accomplice at Bully Pulpit Interactive, which advises Democratic campaigns. âWhy was Brad so assured? As a result of he didnât know any higher.â No matter how a lot digital genius was actually there, Mr. Parscaleâs energy grew after 2016. He knew how you can navigate the turbulent currents of the Trump household. As Mr. Trump regarded forward to the 2020 election, he selected Mr. Parscale because the 2020 marketing campaign supervisor. By this time, former colleagues say, Mr. Parscale had developed an inflated sense of his significance. He would inform those who he and Hope Hicks, the presidentâs shut adviser, have been a part of a small group of nonfamily members on a textual content chain with the Trump youngsters. Mr. Parscale prided himself on being one of many few individuals who might inform the president unhealthy information, and that he couldnât be reduce out due to his loyalty. He noticed himself as a marketing campaign supervisor but in addition one thing extra: a accomplice to Jared Kushner, the presidentâs son-in-law, who was overseeing the marketing campaign from the White Home, and he loved the limelight sufficient that he would take the stage at Trump rallies and throw pink MAGA caps into the gang. His Instagram feed was full of photos not of the candidate whose marketing campaign he was working, however of himself, posing for selfies with followers or signing caps with a black Sharpie just like the boss. However in the summertime, because the marketing campaign stumbled, Mr. Parscale fell out of favor. In a very embarrassing second, youngsters organizing on TikTok reserved greater than one million tickets for a Trump rally in Tulsa, Okla., that Mr. Parscale had organized, inflating the numbers as a prank. Solely about 6,200 folks confirmed up, infuriating the president. On the similar time, Mr. Parscaleâs spending selections have been more and more being questioned; the marketing campaign had blown by way of greater than $1 billion because the starting of 2019, and Mr. Trump nonetheless trailed within the polls. On the White Home, Mr. Trump was furious about his standing within the polls. Mr. Kushner agreed {that a} change was wanted and supported the choice to raise Invoice Stepien and demote Mr. Parscale. When the top got here, it was Mr. Kushner, not the president, who informed him that he was being changed, one other blow to Mr. Parscaleâs ego. âI Gave Each Inchâ Whereas associates suggested Mr. Parscale to make a clear break from the marketing campaign, he selected as a substitute to just accept a smaller position. For the Republican Nationwide Conference, Mr. Parscale was in command of video dietary supplements to this system. Working largely from his Florida residence, he turned pissed off. In a current interview on Fox Information, Mr. Parscale blamed his enemies in Mr. Trumpâs orbit (with out naming them) for his downfall. He informed the Fox Information anchor Martha MacCallum that he was not in contact with Mr. Trump. âItâs fairly hurtful,â he mentioned. âBut it surelyâs in all probability simply as a lot my fault as his. I really like that household. And I gave each inch of my life to him, each inch.â If the aim of the interview was to ingratiate himself with the president or his household, it backfired. Mr. Kushner has informed White Home aides and different allies he thought it was a foul concept. And Mr. Trump, these folks mentioned, stays irritated that Mr. Parscale turned wealthy and well-known buying and selling off his identify. When Mr. Stepien took over as marketing campaign supervisor, there have been discussions about reviewing spending selections made beneath Mr. Parscale, however with solely about three months left till the election, the choice was made to deal with reining within the funds going ahead and never revisiting the previous. Mr. Parscale has denied utilizing funds inappropriately and mentioned the Trump household authorized all his spending selections. On Twitter, he has disputed the $1 billion quantity he claims his critics have pinned on him. Present and former Trump officers mentioned they interpreted Mr. Parscaleâs re-emergence on Fox Information after two months of silence as an try to extend the worth of the memoir he has talked about writing, and to ingratiate himself with a president who might find yourself retaining a great deal of affect over the Republican Social gathering within the years forward. Heâs additionally making an attempt to rehabilitate his repute to higher promote his new firm. Of the police episode in September, Mr. Parscale mentioned he had been breaking down from stress, anxious about assaults from his personal facet and nonetheless grieving the lack of twin youngsters who died as newborns in 2016. The promotional materials for Nucleus is bare-bones, with a number of bullet factors of description. âAn internet-based digital infrastructure creates centralized hub for marketing campaign,â one reads. He modified the Parscale Methods website from a stark photograph of his face and beard in profile to a extra corporate-looking touchdown web page promoting, ârevolutionary advertising and marketing options.â For now Mr. Parscaleâs political legacy is that he was proper about Fb and that he helped Donald Trump rating a shocking victory. In the present day his marketing campaign techniques â quickly testing advertisements to see what will get clicks, pumping funding into Fb somewhat than simply tv â appear apparent. âItâs simpler to assume the unhealthy advertisements brainwashed folks and that Brad Parscale tricked them,â mentioned Jessica Baldwin-Philippi, an affiliate professor at Fordham College whoâs writing a guide known as âMythologizing the Information Marketing campaign.â âWhen youâve got a darkish advert a few migrant caravan however the candidate can also be saying that, properly, itâs not that secret and darkish.â Supply hyperlink #Brad #Comeback #favor #fell #hes #Parscale #Plotting #Trumps

Son of Former Pablo Escobar Associate Is South Florida Lawyer Now Lobbying The GOP In DC On Regulated Cannabis
For reportâŚâŚ.In a true-life storyline more befitting a Hollywood biopic, a man whose father was once a top pot smuggler for Pablo Escobar is an attorney and lobbyist working to flip the Washington, D.C. political establishment into supporting marijuana legalization.
Pablo Escobar
South Florida attorney Brady Cobb is the son of Clyde Walton âBillâ Cobb, who back in the 1970s and early 80s ran a huge pot smuggling operation in the Florida panhandle, using everything from shrimp boats, aircraft and old Prohibition-era moonshine routes to move more than a million pounds of Escobarâs pot. Brady Cobb estimates that before his dad was finally busted, in 1983, he had pulled in more than $300 million of Escobarâs drug money.
âThe DEA couldnât figure out at first why a bunch of rednecks in Cottondale, Florida, had 24-carat gold Rolex watches and were driving Mercedes S500âs, Cobb told Fox News in a recent interview. âThey had to open a field office in Pensacola because of dad â they all got sick of driving up from Miami.â
Cobb said his father inadvertently happened into the drug business in 1976, after scoring the exclusive Fort Lauderdale to Key West distributorship for an iconic suntan lotion brand.
âDad was a redneck, and of course he had to have three acres and a barn, even while living in Key West. The Colombians were moving a load down the road â 50,000Â pounds of weed on a tractor trailer â it broke down and they saw he had a barn,â Cobb recounted. âThey said they would give him $70,000 if they could throw it in there. Obviously, in 1976, it was a sizeable amount of money. And that is how he got his start in cannabis. That cannabis came right from Pablo Escobarâs MedellĂn.â
âŚ./âŚ.
Brady Cobb has been âa key part of the conversationâ in Washington as momentum supporting pot legislation has changed in recent years, according to a former White House staffer.
âBrady is a common-sense guy, who can speak to people in a way they understand. He has become a kind of off-the-record source who really want to know how this process works from the trenches and the medical uses from treating epileptic seizures to PTSD, â the former staffer said. âUses outside of medical are more difficult, but Brady is key in explaining it all in a common-sense way.â
And while Cobb and others lobby federal lawmakers, thereâs been movement at the state level in the last year. Three red states â Missouri, Utah, and Oklahoma â all authorizedmedical cannabis ballot measures in 2018. And in the November election, Michigan became the first Midwestern state to permit recreational pot use.
âThere is no road to the White House that doesnât involve carrying those states,â Cobb said. âAll of a sudden, after that, there was interest in moving something because of those key states.â
Cobb said the effort to win over key GOP players focuses on the idea of statesâ rights to make their own decisions on marijuana use. âI knew we werenât going to convince some very conservative members on cannabis. But we could convince them on stateâs rights,â he said. âAs for the Democrats, it has been about tempering their expectations.â
Cobb has been recognized for his efforts to gain support for the Secure and Fair Enforcement Banking Act, which will allow pot businesses to bank freely, like any other legitimate business. âThe Secure and Fair Enforcement Banking Act is a strong first step in providing legitimate cannabis related and state-licensed farmers, business, and consumers with access to an efficient and safe banking system, and traditional loans and capital markets â I appreciate Bradyâs advocacy on this important legislation,â said a statement from Nikki Fried, Florida Commissioner of Agriculture.
