Onyx quills obscure a piece of the sight, blotting rubies and reflecting golds that shimmer beneath darkness.

So basically in the Scaled and Icy/SAI era of the lore, me and Clancy are found and kidnapped, taken back to DEMA. There, the Bishops brainwash me and use me as a puppet as well as leverage to trap Clancy and force him to perform for the government.

So every day we see one another he has to deal with brainwashed me, so different than what he's normally used to. It's the ANGST-.

Bit of a rant about about how the riordanverse fandom sees shit again but, no, Hades was not a good father.

First of all, he only wanted to be around me and Bianca when our mother was there, as soon as she died he literally took our fucking memories and left us in the lotus hotel (or whatever it's called, I cannot remember which also might be his fault) for DECADES which caused me to have memory issues for the rest of my life.

At the same time he made his identity very much known to us without explaining how anything worked so everytime I saw anything even slightly undead related my immediate reaction was "dads angry with me" instead of what it would be after learning more about stuff.

And then when he actually made another appearance in my life was when my sister fucking died and all he did was tell me how it should've been me instead and I carried that with me for the rest of my life.

And there's also so much more that I forgot or just don't want to talk about and it's so frustrating how everyone in the fandom just ignores that, I know not all my memories are canon but some of these are canon and talked about frequently in the fandom yet no one acknowledges that he was also a crappy parent-

Like yeah I guess he did try bit he still sucked as a father and I'm not gonna act like he didn't.

Luka Aristov was born to Ruslan Aristov, a Russian-American, and an unknown mother. All his life, Ruslan would tell his son that his mother up and left a few weeks after his birth, and any traces of his mother were erased from their lives. As an Army Ranger, Ruslan raised his son in a militaristic style, valuing obedience and loyalty above all, as well as physical prowess. From a young age, Luka was trained in multiple martial arts and the use of firearms. There was little affection between father and son, and Ruslan would even beat Luka if he wasn't performing to his father's standards.

Ruslan's plan for his son was always to become a Tier One operator with the Navy SEALs and pushed his son accordingly. After high school, Luka joined the Navy and worked his way through the ranks for two years before applying for and passing the SEAL Physical Screening Test. He went on to pass BUD/S and SQT, officially becoming a Navy SEAL. After a year of training, he was then stationed at Virginia Beach for even further training and deployment.

Eventually, he served as a SEAL for seven years. He made a name for himself as being highly skilled, utterly loyal and frighteningly efficient, specialising as a sniper and interrogator. He enjoyed his work and formed a close bond with his teammates, glad to be away from his father's suffocating influence. And then the unthinkable happened.

During a mission in a warzone, the team was ambushed and got separated, leading to Luka being caught in a grenade explosion. Due to the damage to the structure he was in and the quick advance of the enemy, Luka was presumed killed in action while his teammates exfiltrated. However, they were wrong: Luka had survived the explosion by pure luck but sustained heavy injuries. Found by the enemy, he was taken to their camp, where they debated either ransoming him back to the US or using him as propaganda material.

Before they could decide on a course of action, one of their leaders' contacts stepped in and offered a large sum of money for the injured SEAL. And so Luka was sold to Hector Grant, operative for The Initiative.

Very little is known about The Initiative in the global intelligence and military community. They are strange partnership between several rogue intelligence agencies, dictatorships and warlords that provides highly trained and obedient assets to carry out clandestine operations around the world for the highest bidder. Once in their hands, an operator with Luka's skillset was in high demand. Through a combination of brutal torture, drugs & mental programming, Luka was broken down to a shell of a human being: horrifyingly lethal and blindly obedient. He became known as the Spare, the operative they would send into the field when another one of their assets had failed their mission. Luka's task was simple: clean up the mess and end the one who had made said mess.

During his time with The Initiative, Luka was known as Xavier and resided in their blacksite compound outside London. There, he met another of The Initiative's assets, known as Felix. The two found friendship in each other, and would often turn to the other when the effects of their brainwashing and torture took their toll on them.

After four years of this hell, Luka was sent to Istanbul to clean up an asset's mess: the target that needed killing had survived and had seen the asset. Arriving in the city, it soon became clear that the asset Luka was meant to eliminate was the one person he cared for: Felix. Refusing to destroy the one good thing in his life, Luka and Felix made a pact and fled. Their freedom was shortlived, unfortunately. The Initiative caught up with them and during the chase through the streets of Vienna that ensued, Felix was mortally wounded. With his last strength, he pleaded with Luka to flee and recover the life he had lost. And so he did, leaving Felix behind.

Ever since that day about a year and a half ago, Luka has wandered around Europe, slowly regaining memories and shards of his previous self. Losing Felix still haunts him and he's sworn to take down The Initiative one day, in vengeance for the lives they stole from them.

What Luka is unaware of is that Felix' comatose body was recovered by The Initiative and revived, for the sole purpose of one day sending him in to kill their runaway asset.

Just keep him breathing until they got up to the mountain and they'd rapid-fire him through the ritual, see if or how well that might patch him up.

"C'mon son." Gramps patted the man's bloodied and scarred face, shook him slightly to rattle him back awake. Ah, he was in shit shape, wasn't he?

But, he'd endured it. That meant he was strong at least.

"Stay awake, the danger's passed." Well, one sort of danger at least. From the frying pan to the meatgrinder but, he'd make it through. Hated coddling the guy like this but that was step one in this process, right? Building the rapport. Build them up, break them down, start again with something useful. The old Nam vet was plenty practiced at that.

jude p.erry from the m.agnus a.rchives: the absolute worst. she's part of this cult that believes they are closest to their god when actively seeking out people who have a lot to live for and systematically erasing that. she was very devoted to and in love with the cult's messiah, and people have said they couldn't tell if jude loved her as a god or a woman. she's currently slid into a leadership position in the cult after the ensuing power vacuum left in the wake of said messiah's death. most people in the cult have the same powers as her.

harshaw quinn from the g.rishaverse: he only shows up in one book and dies at the end of it, but he is everything to me. joins up with alina and her merry band of misfits to take the darkling out. he is a proud father to a little tabby cat who's name translates to cat. he's repeatedly described as weird and unstable, says off-putting shit while doing the in universe equivalent of playing with matches but it's not his fault fire is cool

NGL i assume its a consequence of being a character who appears in lots of stories. so many DC heroes have gotten brainwashed, even multiple times.

Consider: trope where one person is evil/possessed/brainwashed/etc and uses their intimate knowledge of their friend(s) to verbally wreck them.

What I love about this trope is that it's so meta. As an audience, we can casually talk about the character's weaknesses or flaws or deepest fears that way, with absolute fondness.

As an audience, we love traits like "loyal to a fault" or "always the last one to catch on" or "looks out for number one" or "struggles to connect with anyone" or "fails to live up to their own standards" etc. They're what we adore so much about the character.

Seeing them confronted with their flaws/weaknesses/fears in such simple and brutal wording? The character's emotional response to facing who they are to us as an audience? Chef's kiss. Love it.

It's also a "brainwashed battle" sub-trope when it leads to "I know you don't mean it, I know the real [friend's name] would never say that!" even as they're struggling with the genuine hurt of hearing that from someone who loves them.

Here's the kicker: we, as an audience, love them. And we were talking about them like that long before their brainwashed friend was.
