when I first realized percy might have been an unreliable narrator, my first thought was that he might have just be narrating to make himself sound more cool. beating the god of war at 12 years old? carrying the sky on his shoulders? having everyone basically fall in love with him? unrealistic, but okay, you were entertaining anyway (and we all love you) .

then we read HoO and realize that percy's unrealistic because he is FAR more scary and powerful than he ever even let on. and we love him even MORE.

something i haven't seen in fics that i feel like should be explored more is how all the roman kids found their way from lupa and the wolves to camp jupiter.

you have frank, who literally traveled from canada to california, still grieving over the loss of his mother and literally thurst into a completely new life by himself. he's clutching the piece of firewood that is apparently tied down to his life and isn't crying, but lashing out and everything he sees, angry at everyone and everything, more violent than he ever thought he could be or had to be as he's being chased down by monsters he's seeing for the first time.

there's reyna, who all her life has relied on her older sister hylla, making her way to camp jupiter by herself, truly alone for the first time. she is hoping for a home, one she can really call her own, when she gets there. she does not know if she'll find it.

there's octavian, sent early on by his parents as a descendant of apollo. maybe he didn't struggle so much but there's the weight of expectation and knowing he is not the fighter the romans expect him to be.

and then there's jason, who's only ever lived with the wolves, the youngest of them all, stumbling around humanity and life for the first time trying to look for a place he was apparently destined to lead and serve and have glory, but in the moment just feels lost and exhausted out of his mind. he must've only been ten or eleven. and it might have been the most abandoned he's felt again.
