Bradley enjoyed festivities in Kismet Harbor. The sense of community had always held a strong presence and it made him want to participate in the local events held throughout the year. He had just caught up with the parents of some students as he made his way through downtown Kismet Harbor until something caught his attention. Conferring with property lawyers and contractors, consoling his mother who was suffering from two tragedies now between the deli and her youngest son, taking care of a restless Abel who’d been fussy for the entire day, all the while trying to maintain a semblance of sanity in the face of friends and loved ones. He’d made the decision to set down his roots in Wilmington permanently once again, vowing to get the business back up to its former glory, but it was beginning to look like a much bigger task than even he’d assumed. Owen had certainly been through his fair share of shit over the years, but this felt different. It was all out of his control, and this feeling of powerlessness wasn’t something he took to very kindly. And, worst of all, his pride wouldn’t allow him to seek help. In his eyes, he could have done more to prevent the deli from getting destroyed in the storm, could have been back up in his hometown before his brother got in the accident, could have put these worries in his hands before they became worries. 

Things were a mess. And that’s what brought him to Penelope’s door.

He wasn’t drunk for once. He’d thought about downing a couple of shots, but the nausea in his stomach prevented him from doing so. Owen could barely eat, could barely sleep through the stress that was mounting on top of him. Colleen had taken Abel for the night, leaving the raven-haired male to his thoughts — something that was never a good idea. Which is why he found himself at Penelope’s, around one in the morning (still earlier than usual) and stone-cold sober. Rapping on her door a couple of times, the male took a step back as he waited for a response.

The same scared, little girl who’s only goal in life was becoming exactly what had been expected from her.

The blonde had sat in her porsche for about fifteen minutes before finally walking up to the redhead’s door, incredibly scared and petrified of the confrontation that was inevitably about to occur, but she couldn’t waste another moment feeling this guilt, knowing she’d hurt someone close to her (even if she didn’t want to admit it). After knocking three times, the doctor stood nervously on the patio, heartbeat quickening when the door opened. “Hi! Um,” Veronica bit her lower lip, attempting to keep her eyes from welling up at the mere sight of Penelope -- but her hoarse voice all but gave her away. “I bought you wine -- Chateau Pontet-Canet,” she held up the three-hundred bottle of alcohol, almost as a peace offering. “Can we, like, talk or something?”

EXPLAINING WILL ALWAYS BE DIFFICULT ,  one realizes ,  though not for the first time ,  brittle boned teeth dug into bottom lip til it  ACHES ,  apprehension choked thick on the back of his tongue .  how does one begin to explain the nuances of a world turned  UPSIDE-DOWN ?  of overlapping gaze darkened as a lightswitch flip ,  on  &  off  &  on again ,  of monsters  &  death  &  TERROR  so thick it blankets the mind ?  wraps ,  covers ,  smothers until one can’t even  BREATHE  past it ,  skin shivered outside itself ,  inside out ,  vein  &  bone exposed to open air til it  ACHES ACHES BURNS  ——  oft wonder if words can even properly describe .  wonder if even you weren’t losing your mind ,  you could even begin to explain the  INSANITY .
