Payment systems in the United States healthcare are very complex and very costly compared to the value of care provided. To move from the traditional fee-for service payment model, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid has designed this new system called Bundle Payment for Care Improvement or BPCI in order to not only lower the high cost of healthcare but also to provide valuable care. According to the CMS website, they enter in a payment arrangement with organizations in return for financial and performance accountability for episodes of care.

So in essence, patients would not be charged by each individual component of care they receive, instead they would receive a charge for the entire episode of care.

bundle payments are multi-beneficial because they not only lessen the efforts of physician in terms of multiple billing, they bring down the cost of care by grouping a number of diagnoses in a medical DRG. Helping both patients and physicians have a better experience.

For instance, Mercy Health Saint in the class reading we had a failed BPIC because they failed to effectively analyze their community needs based on their service area and demographic of the population they serve.
