Two Loves, A life not theirs

You’ll find that this girl particularly was different. Not like the novel different, where there hair is strange colors but different like, instead of saying “I'm not like other girls” she would do anything to be basic. She would say she hated romance and fake gag every time someone kissed, but she always caught feeling fast, and she never wanted to leave them alone. She would say she hated children, but they would play with her and she’d play along. She laughed in the sun, and cried in the dark; she was a charmer, she wanted to care for others, and she was friends with anyone and everyone, never looking at the way they looked or the rumors on their names. And yet, she found herself alone all the time, and wanting nothing to do with anyone. She wore close to fit in, but was left out. Made popular jokes, but no one laughed. 

And at the end of the day, she was the same little girl she used to be. Just sadder, and faker, and lonelier. 

He was not mean. He was nice. He had relatively good grades. Everyone wanted to be his friend, and his friends wanted to bully everyone. He was a football player, not shocking. He tried to stand out, even talked to the weird kids. And yet he still blended into the American highschool experience. He did something different, it became a trend at school, he stayed in class, people praised him. He skipped class, people went with him. He could never be alone, he could never get a break.

He was wanted to be different, he wanted to be a loner, be able to experience life by himself. Not fake people, and not football players. 

He didn’t see her. Didn’t notice her eyes, and her sweet smiles. Didn’t notice the glances.

She wished he could see her, didn't notice the long stairs. The breathless thoughts. 

They grew up. He found love, she found a job. 

The curious glances, things they could have been. All left to the memory of a time which never existed. They couldn’t just talk to each other,  no one tried. And now they are both sad and alone. 

One with a job and a wife, and a baby one the way. 

The other, working countless hours, and never sleeping. 

In the end , maybe there would have been something, maybe there would have been love and unconditional support. But not today. Not tomorrow, and not in the past 15 years. There is no love; and though people may say what they want, the small glances, long stares, sweet smiles, and breathless thoughts will stay with the two for an eternity to come.
