Washi/Boshi, an official “Wa” character that predates Waluigi
Tumblr media
Wadaisy, another Wa that predates Waluigi
Tumblr media
Which means that by the time Wapeach was designed there were 2 Was that were all ugly and gross, and 2 that just kind of looked like punk versions of their non-Wa counterparts.
I heard that the reason why they didn’t make WaPeach like Waluigi and Wario in terms of design or more so ugly (which is what some fans been asking why she’s not ugly like them) is cuz in Japanese the term waru means bad not ugly.
I don’t know what to make of that but that’s what I heard.
But that's not the point.
Wario's evil doppelganger gets to be an overweight, farty, garlic-guzzling, ugly little man.
Tumblr media
Luigi's evil doppelganger gets to be a scrawny, hunched scarecrow of an individual with a long pointy nose and a ridiculously long chin.
Tumblr media
So why does Peach get this???
Tumblr media
Why is Peach's evil doppelganger a cutesy, doll-faced girlie who looks like just another Peach render with a different dress and hair style!?!? Why are so many people looking at this design and saying "oh yeah! This works as Peach's Wario." We as a society deserve better.

What are your thoughts on Yattodetaman? I really like the evil trio's giant camel mech.
LOVE Yattodetaman!! I'm only like 9 eps in but it's probably my fourth fav series of franchise. I think what catches my eyes most are how colorful the outfit designs are, especially the villain trios' 💜💖💚 (ALSO SAME, iirc it's called the Time Rakuda, which means Time Camel in Japanese! Its design is so cute esp for a villain mecha)

You ever think about how in the earliest iterations of Princess Tutu our good friend Rue "Kraehe" Lastname was conceptualized as the Jessie of a team rocket type funny antagonist trio. the Doronjo to some goofy cartoon rats' Boyacky and Tonzura. blasting off at the speed of light. she would love someone to be her james and/or meowth so so badly and thats why she resorted to doing a funny evil dance that pisses you off with a crow disguised as mytho in episode 12. its inhumane to keep her kind without others in their enclosure

Well now I'm curious, just how many parodies of Iyami is there?
Well! I can’t name them all because I don’t know all of the instances of someone basing a character off Iyami, heh. It’s kind of hard to look something like that up because, since Iyami isn’t very well-known in the west, there’s not much documentation of that outside of Japan. But I can promise you there are a lot of them! I’ve noticed they popped up mostly in media from the 80s, which would be when the people who grew up with the original 60s Osomatsu-kun would have been in their 20s and working in the manga / animation / games industry, heh. Here are some Iyami expies I know of:
Major Minor from the game Tempo
Tumblr media
Leon the Dream Thief from the Pokmon anime
Tumblr media
Gourmand from the game Power Stone II
Tumblr media
Kinshiro Morooka (AKA King Moron) from the game Persona 4
Tumblr media
Hyena from the game King of Fighters (this one seems to be a hybrid of Iyami + Boyacky from the anime Time Bokan)
Tumblr media
The embassador from Planet Official from Sgt. Frog
Tumblr media
This unnamed guy from 21 Amon
Tumblr media
This also unnamed imp from Urusei Yatsura
Tumblr media
Now, you can probably notice that they’re all pretty physically similar to Iyami, but what truly confirms them as being based on him isn’t just their looks. Almost all of these examples embody an unique combination of the following traits: having speech quirks very similar to Iyami’s, claiming to be from France, sharing a voice actor with one of Iyami’s animated incarnations (such as the last three examples!) or… straight up doing the sheeh sometimes!

Profiles in Villainy
Doronjo
Hiroko Sasagawa, the gorgeous, vain and diabolical villainess known as Doronjo, is the leader of the deplorable Doronbo Gang.  Aided by her hapless henchmen, Boyacky and Tonzura, she embarked on missions to locate and obtain the mysterious Skull Stones.  It was later revealed that Doronjo was actually a lieutenant reporting to the criminal mastermind known as Dokurobei and that the Skull Stones were gems that could create a map to a massive cache of gold.
Despite her intellect and cunning, Doronjo is regularly bested by the young Yatter Riders.  Eventually, Hiroko retired her role as a villainess to live a civilian life where she got married and started a family.
Actress Noriko Ohara provided the voice for the villainess; she first appeared in the premiere episode of the anime Yatterman airing on January 1st, 1977.

It’s funny that everyone is pretending like they’ve always known who Doronjo was and being like “Uhh, ACTUALLY Wapeach isn’t ugly because she’s based off Doronjo? Duh. Wario and Waluigi were clearly based off Tonzura and Boyacky.”

Wario and waluigi were inspired by 2 weird looking guys named Boyacky and Tonzura, who serve as henchmen for a sexy-looking lady named Doronjo, who in turn served as Wapeach’s inspiration. That’s why Wapeach looks so much less weird and ugly than Wario and Waluigi.

What I Watched This Week – 3/10 – 3/23
Tumblr media
Outlaw Star – It’s hard to believe, but this space adventure series is over twenty-five years old somehow, and I figured I should watch it while it’s still streaming. It follows a brash and cocky young man with an assortment of scars and bright red hair who runs an odd-jobs outfit with a level-headed and precocious eleven-year-old boy on a frontier planet. A series of coincidences gets them tangled up in the affairs of an outlaw attempting to outmaneuver a band of pirates, and sets them on an action-packed journey across the galaxy. I have to admit that I never really took to the main character, and just found his cocky recklessness vaguely annoying as he spouted one-liners while fighting every fight the same way every time. The rest of the cast was a touch more palatable, with his young business partner Jim and the wooden-sword-wielding assassin Shizuka being my favorites. It was a fun enough romp through space, but it was definitely dated, with more homophobic humor than I care for. 7/10
Tumblr media
Yatterman Night – This is a spin-off of a series from the 70s, and it takes the villainous henchmen trio from that series and makes them the protagonists of a story where Yatterman is the villain. The story opens with nine-year-old Leopard discovering that she and her mother’s friends Voltkatze and Elephantus are the decedents of Doronjo, Boyacky, and Tonzura from the original story, and they become so angry at the Yatterman empire for not helping them when her mother was sick that they decide to journey to the capital to give him a forehead flick. I have never seen the original series, and those who have I am sure could pick up on lots of Easter eggs throughout the series, but everything stood alone just fine for me. I had a lot of fun watching Leopard take on the persona of Doronjo, complete with costume and villainous laugh, and Voltkatze’s quickly engineered contraptions and Elephantus’s incredible fighting strength made for exciting fights against the Yatterman forces. The animation was surprisingly good at times, giving the action a ton of life. A fun adventure with a colorful cast. 7/10
Tumblr media
You Don’t Know Gunma Yet – I threw on this series of 3-minute shorts to kill some time one night, and there isn’t a whole lot to say about them. They center on a high school kid who has just moved to Gunma prefecture and learns various facts about the region that had been exaggerated for comedic effect. It all had the vibe of poking fun at where the rednecks live or something, and I don’t know enough about Japan to get most of the jokes or know whether they were punching down. 6/10
Tumblr media
Slayers Next – I liked, but didn’t love the first season of this series, but I ended up really getting into this sequel season. Lina, Gourry, and the crew open their latest adventure by spoiling the world domination plans of the princess of a neighboring country before embarking on a quest to find a magical tome that Zelgadis hopes will have a clue for turning human again. I thought chasing after a mystical book was a fun and classic hook for an adventure, and I thought the new characters they encountered, the new villains, and the new threats to the characters were just all around more compelling than in the previous season. I can tell that if I had watched this in the 90s when I was a teenager I would have been up to my eyeballs in Lina and Gourry fan fiction. What a fun show. 7/10

What's the meaning behind the pig on the palm tree in Time Bokan?
Oh the odate buta/flattered pig!! He's a gag robot first appearing in the second half of the 1977 Yatterman series; whenever Doronjo would compliment Boyacky he'd pop out while quoting something around the lines of 'when flattered, even a pig can climb a tree' (in Japanese obvs). Apparently it's supposed to mean that even the most unlikeable ppl can achieve something great and the gag robot became so popular among fans that he even spawned a song and many other variations in the later series! It's safe to say he's the mascot of the franchise haha. Love him 🐷🌴
