"You should be grateful that you at least look human now." What a fascinating little glimpse into Vader in this comic--Valance is also mostly cybernetic parts, but he generally looks human over all the metal that makes him up, that he desperately holds onto the last few things that were part of his original human body. In contrast, Vader is the opposite--he still holds many of his original body parts, even if they're severely damaged, like he needs special lenses just to be able to see, he needs the suit just to get air into his lungs, etc. And then it struck me that he can't replace his parts. He can't make himself look human again like Valance did Vader needs every original part he can get, because metal doesn't wield the Force, other organic parts might not be Force-sensitive in the way that Anakin Skywalker's original body was off the fucking charts Force-sensitive. So he has to be stuck inside his original skin, he has to be stuck inside this suit that keeps his damaged body alive, he can never again look human, he can only see himself as inhuman, just one more way Anakin distances himself from his humanity and drives those knives deeper into himself. Valance should be grateful that he can at least pretend to be human. Vader doesn't even have that, to him all that's left is the monster. And that's why it's so important that we see him take his helmet off at the end of Return of the Jedi, to reinforce that he's just a pathetic man inside a nightmare suit, that underneath all that he is still human, but that he hides it away because he himself doesn't think he can be anymore.
