For some reason, the first thoughts my brain gave me when I got up at stupid early in the morning today was a 5+1 fic idea: 5 times a dog didn't lead Link to treasure and one time it did. And the +1 time is it leading him to Zelda. And this is not during some calamity or what not, this is pure fluff during either the pre-calamity era, the time between BotW and TotK or post TotK.

Also if someone else wants to write this feel free. I really probably won't ever bother.

Link plucked out a song on Zelda's old harp, keeping himself busy while stuck in the house after getting struck by lightning the last time he went out in similarly bad weather. The princess herself sat by the window, her book long forgotten in her lap, staring out at the thunderclouds, watching the lights flash within the fluff.

"I miss her," Zelda sighed after a particularly strong rumble of thunder, she didn't have to explain who she was talking about, Link only hummed softly in agreement.

Cozy

Time's eye snapped open, for a moment, all he could feel was the rapid pulsating of his racing heart. Before he could recall the nightmare his mind had conjured up only seconds before, he spotted what had really woken him up. Wild's wolf friend had wandered away from the champion and guessing by the slight wetness on his cheek, had prodded him with its cold nose.

Before he could push away the strange canine, it curled up at his side, successfully pinning him down, and although the old man sighed, it was at least a surprisingly comfortable position.

What is your favorite thing about each of the Links?

this is a mix of LU and in game stuff, and I’m trying to keep headcanons out of it but:

Time: HIS DRAMATIC ASS FUCKING SCREAMS IN GAME, ITS SO FUNNY, I LOVE HIM SO MUCH

Wars: As anyone who’s spent even a fraction of a second scrolling through my blog would know, Wars is my favorite and I love everything about his dumb ass. The scarf, his absolutely atrocious choice of fucking footwear, the fuckass haircut, etc. But i gotta mention his absolute look of disgust when Cia was like, dying in Lana’s arms or whatever and she asked Lana something like “How can you stand being so close to Link knowing he’ll never love you back?” He just looked SO fucking over it. His facial expressions in that game are generally just great because he’s either high key fucking judging everyone, staring autistically into space, or looking shocked as hell. Also in LU I love that he told everyone to be normal 😭

Twilight: The fact that he has a framed picture of a goat in his house but no bed. I love him.

Sky: He’s such a sneaky little mischievous fucking shit. He broke a chandelier, delivered a letter to a toilet demon, he fucks around and gets up to horrible little shenanigans but then he looks at you with that sweet face and big ol’ eyes and gets away with it. He’s my favorite Link in general /srs

Hyrule: CHARACTER DESIGN. HES SO FUCKASS /pos HES SO LITTLE GUY. He looks like he’s constantly witnessing the horrors of the world but also doing crimes. He must be protected at all costs but also he’s incredibly durable, smart, and more than capable of protecting himself AND others. What a guy

Legend: His whole LU design. The skirt with the fuckin cowboy boots puts him in my top five based on that alone

Wild: His blank ass :D face in BOTW/TOTK. Ain’t nothin’ behind those eyes. Kissing him on the forehead, what a guy. If his silly autistic stare hadn’t captivated me last May I would not be in this fandom. I would not be writing fics. He’s just so creature and I’m holdin’ him in my hands so gently

Four: The fact that he’s shorter than the group dog /j but seriously i just love how he’s clearly the only one mature enough to recognize everyone, INCLUDING HIMSELF, needs fucking therapy

Wind: Everything. Look at him. I adore his facial expressions in game and in LU, and I love his energy

Any suggestions/thoughts for fox!Wild?

okay so I’m ngl my first thought was how hunting foxes used to be a very popular sport, and how fox!Wild would have to be wary of that (I'm happy to report that it seems to be going out of fashion in our modern age at least 😭)

foxes have a reputation for being clever and, unlike owls, it’s actually well founded! they’re wicked smart and very athletic too, and I think that fits Wild very well :)

they also tend to be solitary but social, which I think reflects his journey in botw very nicely

foxes have an amazing sense of smell (important for intraspecific communication via scent marking) and hearing (especially low frequency sounds), as well as vision adapted for all sorts of different lighting conditions (making hunting possible during the day as well as at night), although they are apparently myopic and depend on movement to focus on an object

like dogs, they are also green-red colorblind. do with this information what you will

TAPETUM LUCIDIUM. someone wakes up in the middle of the night and sees Wild all 🟢🟢 and promptly has a heart attack

foxes can sense the earth’s magnetic field and use this to triangulate the location of their prey

Wild needs to do the iconic fox jump at least once 🥺

they're also very vocal and make a large variety of vocalizations

I think it’d be interesting if Twilight was incapacitated or in need of some sort of rescuing 👀 being unable to help Wild through this would kill him lol

there is the matter of the master sword as well, which would necessitate taking Sky out of the picture 🤔 OR, for a different spin on things, if Twilight is missing and Wolfie is obviously unavailable to help them track him down, maybe Wild intentionally chooses to use the shadow crystal to find Twilight 👀👀👀👀

also if you want to get real fancy and connect this fic to opossum Hyrule, maybe Hyrule is the one who helps Wild adjust to a new form :) bonus points for any shenanigans they get into hehehehehe

- I have always had anxiety for art because I grew up in an abusive and competitive education system. I feared making art for a large part of my childhood because I was afraid of not getting things right. I rekindled my love for art after moving to Canada.

- Did all three AP Art exams and almost got into BFA for textiles and printmaking, but decided to quit art school and study art history.

- My favourite things are ceramics, printmaking, illustration, textile art, and design.

- Will not draw or repost explicit/sexual content.

- occasionally doing major illustration projects for my favourite fic writers or exciting scenes in general.

directors cut of Link’s Thought Brambles, particularly the section where Zelda’s magic strength comes to light? That part lives in my head rent free lol

First of all thank you for asking, Dee, and 🥰!

In my head, there's a distinction between:

Skills and magic Link and Zelda (& others in the LoZ universe) simply have innately

Magic which can awaken within themselves

and Magic which can become available to them through artifacts like the Triforce, the Master Sword, or now the new Tears of the kingdom.

Just as an example, Yunobo already could use Daruk's Protection (it's innate to him) but he gained at least one new ability when he awakened as a sage due to the Tear - he could now give Link a duplicate of himself.

I already basically had it working the same way for Link and Zelda in my head!

So I decided on things that made sense to be innate to Zelda if interpreted the way I did in this fic, which is to be a direct reincarnation of Hylia who has lived many lifetimes:

'Muscle' memory - she's spent previous lifetimes as an excellent archer, so she remains one. I figure she has buried 'memories' of hand-to-hand combat too, but maybe not as much or not in the same way as Link.

Stronk! - The reincarnation of Hylia just makes sense to me to be stronger than normal.

Super smarts - She's aligned with wisdom, so I figure she has a huge capacity and affinity for learning. (This is the one that has direct game evidence - the others are really just my headcanons).

I waffled back and forth on how good of a horseback rider she should be and came to the conclusion that yes, she does that in some games but not like Link does, wow - he's so often on a horse!!

So - when Zelda's magic strength comes to light in the fic, it's simply something she always had but was never forced to employ. Here's where game evidence does come in again for why she would not have displayed the physical abilities in the past: BotW goes out of its way to show us that Zelda never had to physically protect herself or anyone else because someone else was always doing it. Evidence below:

Link protects her from the Yiga.

Link kills all those monsters in Eldin to protect her in the memory where Zelda's concerned about his blurred line between courage and recklessness.

Urbosa protects Zelda from the Yiga that stalk them outside Gerudo town.

Daruk rushes to save the dog in the memory where she asks him to pilot Rudania - Zelda hangs back and doesn't get involved.

In the memory where Mipha supports Sidon in swimming up the waterfall, Zelda is very dubious about it. She immediately jumps to the idea that Sidon is too young - that something more like coddling is the right move. I propose that this is evidence of how Zelda was raised physically.

Link takes all the blows at the battle of Fort Hateno until the very end, when she knows the next one will kill him and she can't bear it.

All of that to say, Zelda is extremely dedicated but believes the physical fighting is someone else's job, so she doesn't step in until it's almost too late in BotW.

But what if something had convinced her that she needed to change her way of thinking and behaving earlier? Something like standing by helpless while Link is very nearly killed by a mob? Something similar to, but not exactly like, his near-death at the hands of the guardians at Fort Hateno? What if she realized she could have prevented it, had she stood between him and the people at the melee? What if she recognized that Link was not invulnerable much earlier, and wanted to be able to help him should the need arise?

That's where the scene of her (and everyone else) realizing Zelda already had innate abilities came from. She had them always, but the only one which had come to light was her smarts - because Princesses do get educated, don't they? 😃

I see those abilities as separate from what awakens when she does step between Link and certain death - I think those abilities come from her alignment with the complete Triforce, and in other games from her having access to the Triforce of Wisdom.

Small spoiler: I also intend to cheaty-cheat a bit in Adventure Log+ because I want the Bow of Light to be magic she can dredge up from herself because she's a reincarnation of Hylia. I... don't really have evidence for that. It's just how I want it to work. 😅

Ooooo idk if you mean sonic fics or just anything? But I've always wanted to make a rec list hehe ^_^

sonic fics:

- a new chapter by LuckyKnuckles - adorable metonic story with AMAZING character growth

- in a field of hungry crows by SungoldSummer - sonadow, literally everything in this series is absolute gold but this one is my favorite ^_^ (i've got a thing for first aid what can i say)

- operation biohazard by macaronz - an awesome sonic resident evil au that has never left my head, would highly recommend if u like gore!

- trip trip fall in love by spittingsprite - fleetway sonic x scourge, absolutely hysterical, i reread it all the time

- tunnelvision by imaginearia - have u ever wanted the most amazing yet morally ambiguous sonfinite fic ever? well u got it,, go read this right now. there is also quite a bit of sonadow if that's more ur jam <3

- the L in rivalry stands for love by sugar__stars - sonadow, unfinished, but it is so so freaking cute and every day i mentally give @staronet sad puppy dog eyes and ask her to finish it /jk

- shot! by skoliroven - sonic and shadow during the lethal highway level. again, amazing, especially if you like gore

- WHEN THE WAR IS OVER... by perennials - the legend of zelda, this is hands down the best fic I've ever read (although knowing a bit about BotW: Age of Calamity might be necessary)

- you're a creature of the night, dear by prettydizzeed - the addams family, rated E with a focus on physical disability. I only have a cursory knowledge of the addams family from watching the movie twice when I was, like. Eight, yet I still love this fic with all my heart

- if i fall i really hope you'll call me by mallowstep - warrior cats, i highly recommend checking out all this author's fics but this is one of the ones that made me scream excitedly at two in morning

THAT’S SO COOL????? I’m not into video games but GOD they reincarnate and are in love every time??? princess and knight??? also I’ve been wanting to say this for ages but link is sooooo gender. you get it

so. they are in love in the sense that nintendo is queerbaiting me. queerbaiting me with a "straight" couple (they are lesbians). they are not canon they kissed only in the second ever zelda game when there was only the barest story and they were nothing more than pixel sprites and they have not been canon since. and because every game is technically a different link and a different zelda, each individual game varies on how shippable they actually are? like, I'm not very far through twilight princess yet but I've heard they're pretty much just coworkers in that one. the three latest mainline games though, they're like. they're pretty much canon in all but name like you could say it's platonic but like at that point you are running on loads of denial. the three latest mainline games are skyward sword, which is the first link and zelda, the start of the cycle. the plot ENTIRELY revolves around how much link loves zelda. cause they're best friends, hyrule as a kingdom doesn't even exist yet (they live on an island in the sky) she falls to earth and is running around having to discover that she's a reincarnated goddess (that's a whole angst factor btw bc the goddess (hylia) had to fight demise and she won but knew it was temporary and knew demise would have to be defeated again, and that he would need to be defeated with the power of the triforce, which can only be wielded by humans, so she decided basically that she'd need a loyal human knight, and so she reincarnated into a human girl because a girl is loved in the way a goddess isn't and she knew someone would love a human girl enough to save her WHICH HAPPENS so basically zelda gets to have an identity crisis was she just dragging link towards this destiny the whole time? did she truly love him? did he truly love her? are they puppets in this grand plan? "I'm still your zelda" she says to him, but is she??? drives me nuts) and he, ever loyal, keeps running after her to save her again and again and again (link is so dog coded there's a great botw fic about this), and then they defeat demise and he curses them and link is just some guy who went through ALL THIS SHIT cause he LOVED zelda. what if you were in love with your best friend and it cursed you and your descendants for the rest of time this is so francesca by hozier I'd tell them put me back in it I'd go through it again if i could hold you for a minute. and then the next two mainline games are breath of the wild and tears of the kingdom and breath of the wild involves an amnesia plot so you basically watch link fall in love with zelda a second time and then in tears of the kingdom they are. common law married. they share a house. there's only one bed. do NOT get me FUCKING STARTED on the hateno house. and nintendo still plays FUCKING COY zelda's english va has to be like "they... have a really close bond...." this is how I know they're queer you wouldn't do this with straight people. and then people also ship ocarina of time (most popular and well known game of the series most praised for its story) zelink a lot but that's an older game I haven't played yet so I can't speak on them. zelda is so transmasc in that one though this I know. I talk about link being genderqueer a fair amount and everyone on this internet knows link is trans but trust. zelink is t4t

- Dear Hero by @\thecagedsong. A post-canon Twilight Princess rom-com that's not only hilarious but insightful, packed with lore, and has excellent characterizations. I'm not usually into rom coms but this one was fantastic

- A Tale Past Twilight: Forked Tongues by GrayGuard06. A post-canon Twilight Princess fic where Link goes to help a village with a monster problem and walks into a whole can of worms. Note the violence tag, but it's got plot and a good ending

Breath of the Wild fics:

- The Girl at the Museum by wavebreeze. Modern AU, sort of a meet-cute, short and sweet. I don't usually go for these but it was surprisingly fun

- Feast by webcomix. Tw grief but super cute/heartwarming way for Link and Zelda to meet as kids

- Hold Your Destiny by webcomix. Long fic, basically a novelization of pre-calamity BOTW, loved the characterization (sequel is LU-related)

- A Hero's Spirit by SilvermistAnimeLover. Long fic, Link basically dies defeating Calamity but his spirit gets stuck in a limbo state so he's still able to help Hyrule start recovering from 100 years of destruction (sequel is LU-related)

Linked Universe (LU) Related fics:

- all of @zolanort/Cullhach's fics are delightful

- Willow Bark and Chamomile by schrodingers__cat. The Chain gets separated and confused. Legend has never been more prepared for anything in his life

- Rain and Mountain Climbing Don't Mix by Isti-Tanu. A fun little one-shot of Wild being wild and everyone reacting as expected

- Whistling on Deaf Ears by CrimsonRavioli. A hurt/comfort fic (heavier on hurt but has a happy ending) where Twilight's sensitive hearing works against him

- Running with the Wolves by alternatemind. The Chain wonders if Wolfie is lonely and decide to do something about it. Light angst, mostly fluff

- Dog Days AU series by alternatemind. Twilight-centric AU where Twilight gets stuck as a wolf just before he meets the Chain. Hilarity ensues

- The More Things Change series by Iffondrel. The Chain compares and contrasts references to their own worlds while they explore Wild's Hyrule, includes TOTK content

- Language Barriers by Kastaborous. The Chain meets Wild fic where the 10,000 year gap between other heroes is acknowledged through language drift. Interesting and entertaining read

- A Home for Flowers by faufaren. The Chain meets Elderitch!Wild. Charming characterization and storytelling

- What Hero? by AimeeLouWrites. (tw gaslighting) The Chain meets Wild fic where Wild thinks they're Yiga and pretends that there is no hero, and then never quite really decides to tell them when the game is over. Borderline crackfic, very fun read

- Child's Play by AimeeLouWrites. The Chain meets Wild fic, de-aged Wild and Flora meet the Chain and decide to be as confusing as possible

- Level One by LightBlueScrubs. Linked Universe Hospital AU where everyone (except Wild) is a doctor working in a trauma unit (where Wild is the patient). First couple chapters are a bit squeamish due to being very medically realistic, but a great fic overall

17. There should be more of this type of fic/art

This one is a... little difficult to answer. In terms of fics, I generally only stick with the Mipha/Link tag, and once sorting and curating it to my liking I can honestly say I so very rarely run into fics I don't like. It's the same with art, granted I'm a little more general with my art. Like yeah I love Miphlink and Mipha art, but I also like general non ship Zelda art, Sonic, Kirby, Mario, Pikmin, you can show me art for something I've never engaged with and I'll probably like it! Line technique, coloring styles, backgrounds, even ui and video game menu designs get my brain going!

So in terms of stuff I think there should be more of, as in there's grossly not enough? I guess I'll go with Miphlink fics that involve ALL the champions + some extras like Impa, Purah and Robbie, the Brigade members. Don't get me wrong, I love lovey dovey "the two idiots are together, watch them fumble until being together", but the one's I really love? I love the fics that include the other characters, give them their own arcs and dynamics with one another, AND the miphlink is there but not the "central focus" of the plot, if that makes sense. Like, it can be a pivotal part of their individual arcs, to allow themselves to express and accept love, but in the grand scheme of things there's OTHER arcs and plotlines going on! I love ALL the Champions, I love pretty much most of the characters! I wanna see Miphlink sure, but I especially love seeing Daruk like overcome a fear of harming people, pulling from his fear of dogs. I love seeing Revali learn to be more open and humble, more confident in his EMOTIONAL strength and not just his technical strength. I love seeing Zelda finally learn that people DO care about her, that she IS loved and can love in return in which THAT gives her at least a step towards unlocking her power.

I don't know if that made sense, hopefully I did. And I'm hopefully not dismissing the fics that ONLY focus on the Miphlink, like I said I eat that up! It's just that I really do love groups with MULTIPLE dynamics and relations and arcs, and oh it just so happens the two childhood best friends happen to love another and are happy and together, but in a semi lowkey way where they focus on one another, but also the other plotlines :)

22. Your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores?

This, once again, is a little hard to answer since as of now I've only played through the Wild Era of games, So I'm not super knowledgeable of the Zelda canon. I know the general stuff, but the more minute stuff? A little harder for me to answer.

I guess I'll be biased and say that people sometimes undermine Mipha's strength. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not fully convinced she's the strongest Champion when you have Urbosa who literally wields a Zora's weakness, and Link, who's quite literally "built different", but a LOT of people make the gap between her and her peers a little too wide. Especially considering that out of ALL of the BotW characters, the only one's who have canonically defeated a Guardian are Link, King Dorephan, and Mipha herself.

It is stated in game during The Champion's Ballad DLC that each Champion underwent Divine Beast Tamer Trials, and are the exact same one's that Link undergoes in the DLC. That means Mipha has canonically taken down FOUR Guardians at the same time, three flying ones and one ground mounted one.

Now, there is the argument that the Guardians may have been of lesser aggressive programing then the one's Ganon overtakes, but given that the one's Link fights in the DLC don't actually glow red, they aren't taken over by Ganon much like the one's in the shrine, meaning Mipha fought them at the EXACT same capacity Link did.

Another argument that could go against this that I'll address is Age of Calamity. In that game EVERY playable character can take out even the strongest of Guardians, and while I'm willing to believe some characters like Daruk, Urbosa, and maybe even Revali can take them, I think this falls more into gameplay mechanics to ensure every character has the overall same capacities, and therefor no character is at an utter disadvantage if a mission has Guardians. I approach this the same way as the flurry rush, in Canon I think only Link can actively do that move, as it is his special trait, but every playable character can do it mechanically just so they all have the same general controls. You cannot tell me in canon characters like Yunobo, Kohga, and Purah and Robbie can perform the EXACT same micro second dodge that Link can.

So, my little canon detail a lot of people overlook? Mipha's a LOT stronger than she appears. And while people who gravitate towards preferring her like the Mipha fans here and on Reddit may agree, most sites, which reminder YouTube for example has a MUCH larger userbase than us, most people tend to place her as the WEAKEST Champion. And I just can't agree.

...Maybe I'm just salty that I saw a YouTube poll of her being in dead last in terms of strength...

So I finished ToTK (although im still gonna be playing it for a long while to complete the shrines and stuff) and loved it. its a bit hard to get into; The mechanics are dense, but I got used to them eventually

But I'm interested in your perspective! You said your feelings were mixed, why's that?

Okay, the rest of this answer contains some mild spoilers so I'm putting it under the cut in case someone hasn't played yet.

1- Zelda stole Link's house. While I kind of get the reasoning behind why for in game it's just....poor Link! He earned money and wood and bought that house (which I like to think belonged to his family pre-Calamity). And then he gave it to Zelda, or shared it and she slowly took over, or he decided he wasn't using it enough and passed to her.

Any way it goes, where is Link staying? Does he have a base or is he so on the road he doesn't see the need for one?

They mention Link follows Zelda around everywhere and I just...does he know anything else outside of helping the royal family? Of course, some of this doesn't matter in the game-verse, but thoughts I've had.

2- I was BAMBOOZLED with Gerudo Town! My favorite location! I was all excited to go explore it and showed up to a fricken wasteland of a town. Also, no vai outfit, BOO. I have heard there's new, lovely outfits, but have yet to find them.

4- A lot of the mixed feelings come from what's the same from the first game. I imagine a lot of the time went into Fuse, but considering the 4/5 year gap between SS and BotW and how MUCH they were able to put in, I feel like TotK should have more for the same time. The side quest A Gift for My Beloved in Hateno was straight up recycled with frogs instead of crickets. Again, I haven't gotten that far, so those thoughts may change.

I actually liked the move away from dungeons in BotW because I'm not great at them, so we'll see what disaster that turns into.

5- The puzzles in BotW just clicked and these ones are like shoving a square peg in a round hole for me. I've managed to overcomplicate...pretty much all of them. My partner says they're more spatial, 3D puzzles vs BotW, which could explain it.

6- You still cannot pet the dogs. Nintendo, you're killing me.

I think Fuse has the potential for a lot of fun, and I've barely explored the Sky islands and the Depths (Sky islands have been hard to reach; I need to bump up stamina or have more food on hand). I'm VERY curious about the story and I'm having fun making theories as I play. There's lots of opportunities for new fic ideas and headcanons. I go through phases playing in an afternoon where I love it, and then hit a point where it gets too frustrating and I'm done for the day. BotW I could play for hours; this, less so.

I'll be interested to see if my thoughts change as I play more and explore!
