St. Botolph's Day
Happy St. Botolph's Day!!! June 17 is the feast day of Botolph, a 7th-century English monk. Actual historical details of Botolph are sketchy, but he had a lot of churches named after him and one church in Lincolnshire became the center of "Botolph's Town," shortened to Boston.
A lot of the Puritans who settled the Massachusetts Bay Colony were from the Boston, England area and named their new hometown after it, which is deeply ironic because the Puritan's were staunchly against "papist" practices like naming places after saints.
Today, June 17 is a legal holiday in Suffolk County, Massachusetts (my kids even got the day off from school until a few years ago) but not for any reason to do with Botolph. June 17, 1775 was the date of the Battle of Bunker Hill in Charlestown, MA and so the day is commemorated as Bunker Hill Day.
People also connect the date 6/17 to Boston because the city's area code is 617.
The Boston Celtics won their most recent NBA Championship on June 17, 2008 and if all goes well, they could win another championship tonight!

The mummified head of Henry Grey, 1st Duke of Suffolk 1517 – 1554.
The head was found in 1849 at Holy Trinity at the Minories, close to the Tower of London. It was later passed to St Botolph's Aldgate where it rested until a planned conversion of the space into an office resulted in an archaeological investigation of the site between April and July 1990.
The archaeologists recovered the head from the vault and the Rector of the church buried it in the churchyard.
Henry Grey is famous for being the father of Lady Jane Grey, who was queen for nine days before being beheaded on Tower Green in 1553.
Henry was himself beheaded a year later on the grounds of High Treasons on the direction of Mary Tudor Queen of England

Chapter : THIS IS FOR YOU : 39 — Curiousity ceased the feline.
[This chapter repost is a continuation of the story on my main Simstagram account @ SassmouthSimmer ]
📍SimNation’s Presidential White House
[Gyra]: “Roosevelt, you should tell Maizie the news before she bursts from curiosity. How is the human idiom quoted? — Curiosity ceased the Feline.”
[Maizie]: “HA! Close enough, babe. It’s all about technicality. You’re not wrong, though.”
[Roosevelt]: “Do you want to tell her, my love?”
[Dhara]: “No, you tell her, I want to watch this reaction.” [ amused breathy chuckle ]
[Roosevelt]: “Maiz, Gy — Dhara and I are expecting a baby!”
[Maizie]: “Are y’all serious?! Wha!? When — when did you find out!?”
[ Gyra]: “Roosevelt! Dhara! Congrats! This is exceptional news to hear! Is everyone aware?”
[Roosevelt]: “Ròz and Diegs, of course, but we wanted to ask if y’all wouldn’t mind us sharing the news at dinner.”
[ Gyra]: “Of course! We’d be delighted!”
[Roosevelt]: “Maiz, what say you!? You okay!?”
[Dhara]: “Roo, I think she’s in shock!”
[Maizie]: “Of course I’m okay! This is the best news ever! I had a feeling about it, but honestly I thought it’d be an engagement announcement but this is so much better!”
[Roosevelt]: “HA! Slow down, Maiz. One step at a time. We’ll get there one day, I’m sure.”
[Maizie]: “Dhara, come here! AAAAHHHH!!! You’re going to have a baby! Oh, how exciting for you both! I know Unc is probably beside himself!”
[Dhara]: “Thanks Maiz. He is! He practically fainted when I showed him all the positive tests. He’s already started buying things and thinking up names.”
[Maizie]: “And how do you feel?”
[Dhara]: “I’m excited! But also nervous. Roo is a giant man — I’m concerned about how big the baby will be by the time of delivery! This baby will probably come out with a college degree.”
[Maizie]: “HA! True! All our fam are tall and sturdy. You have every right to be concerned. [ softly laughs ] Don’t worry, G’ma was as petite as you, and she obviously survived having him.”
[Maizie]: “Mama did say he was a big chunky baby. I think she said he was 12 lbs. at birth. Well, hey! You're fierce! You got this!”
[Dhara]: “12 pounds! OH, MY NO! Please tell me you're joking. What have I done?! I wonder if I’ll ever be able to walk again. I barely survive Roo as it is now. Maybe the baby will be petite, like me.”

🔊SOUND ON🔊 Until you find me there... "If it’s really you... I can't stay here." The words slip out, soft yet cutting. After days of wandering, she finds herself facing him once again. But something feels off, like a dream turned sour.… An appearance too familiar, too young, like a ghost from the past that shouldn’t exist. Twenty years have passed, yet it’s as if time has rewound itself. Too many mysteries, too much weight on her heart… That wound she’s been so careful not to reopen. . . . She is with her Daydream ‘ARJUN’ — Earth alias for HRH RI RAJARJUN ETA LUPI BOTOLPH of the LUPI STAR TRIBE, SIXAMI EMPEROR KING OF THE SIXAM EMPIRE (I know it, you know it! but Rei doesn't...Yet ! 😏 so hush🤫🤭) ✨Arjun is Sass's (@sass.berry.origin) very own character!✨ You can see him on her 'Not So Berry Challenge' Origin account. St Nectan’s and St Botolph’s Day
St Nectan’s Glen. Source: Britain Express website
A mass is traditionally held on St Nectan’s Day to commemorate the life and extraordinary death of the sixth century saint at St Nectan’s Well at Hartland Point. Allegedly the martyred saint carried his own head to the well half a mile before throwing it in. Apparently wherever his blood fell on the ground, foxgloves sprang up, which is why the infrequently performed ceremony comprises a procession of schoolchildren carrying the flowers. An alternative death story for Nectan is associated with the better known St Nectan’s Glen at Trethevy in Cornwall. The story goes that with his dying breath, the saint threw a silver bell into the waterfall saying it would not ring again until paganism and corruption had been driven from the land; tge bell had never sounded since.
St Botolph’s only claim to fame is that the town of Boston in Lincolnshire is named after him - which isn’t a bad claim.

In 1870 Ignatius took a break from his usual sermons and ill-advised correspondence with newspaper editors to pen his first novel: Brother Placidus, and why be became a monk. A tale for the young men of the times. It’s mostly directly based on the people and places of New Llanthony so is interesting in that respect, but also for who Ingatius envisages as his target audience...
In chapter one good boy Leonard and his scoundrel friend Charles had attended a sermon given by a pale faced monk at St. Botolph’s ritualist church. In the second we get to hear all about how much Leonard loves Charles, and tries to discover were he’s gone.
Chapter Two: How He Actually Carried Out His Wish
THE next morning, Leonard Morris was, as usual, at his post in the Bank of England with the most scrupulous punctuality. He was noted for his unimpeachable character, for his high moral tone, and also for his brave defence of what he believed to be Christian principle.
Leonard had had many a pitched battle, figuratively speaking, for his principles, and was universally regarded as a "plucky young Puseyite.” For a whole year after his first matriculation at the Bank, he had been the butt of countless ill natured jests, and the subject of many most disagreeable practical jokes.
He walked home one day to his lodgings, with the words "Bible Baby" pinned on to his coat tails. On another occasion, a young wit had pinned on to his back the words "Christian Ass." Leonard only discovered this, by hearing someone exclaim behind him, "Well, and a more useful animal to society, too, than a meddling infidel monkey."
We could tell many tales of Leonard Morris's first year in the world, but it is not with Leonard that we have so much to do. The Exchange clock was striking eleven, and our friend was anxiously wondering why Charles Lyndhurst did not put in an appearance. That morning, however, no Charlie appeared. What could it be? Where was he? Was anything the matter?
When business hours were over, and Leonard was returning home, a fellow-clerk of his accosted him with the following question. "Well, Morris, and where's your chum Lyndhurst? Screwed last night, I suppose, as usual, and seedy this morning. I cannot think how you, an orthodox Puseyite, can be so desperately in love with such a fellow. Why, even the name “Heretic” would be a compliment to him. I’ve often heard him say that the Bible is all humbug."
...
Leonard hurried on towards Charles's lodgings, ruminating anxiously in his mind concerning him. Intensely Leonard loved his friend, who only in a very mitigated form returned the love, which he knew his friend cherished for him. And what were Leonard's thoughts about Charles? He really thought that he might be seriously ill.

Touring Nairn’s City of London: northern and western edges. I seized a sunny day to go see some of Ian Nairn’s destinations and more.
The Barbican is a good first stop, a lovely bit of City Brutalism (though maze-like). I find Brutalist buildings so attractive when complemented by sunshine. Enjoyed visiting the book fair at St Giles-without-Cripplegate! Wonderful prices and selection with new stock coming in, plus it’s in a sweet little church.
Depending on how you leave the Barbican, you may come across St Alphege London Wall. I’m quite fond of ruins - there is a wistful charm to the fragmented identity of what once was. Broadgate has an amusing (and inadvertent?) modern homage to St Alphege.
Following Nairn, we head to Finsbury Circus for Lutyens’ Britannic House. Coming from Broadgate, the keen eye might notice a commemoration plaque for the old St Mary Moorfields. I’ve probably seen Lutyens around, but this is the first time I’ve consciously visited one of his works; don’t know much about him but the statues and classical details were charming.
We now come to a blooper in my tour. When I mapped out Nairn’s route, I erroneously put down Sun Street rather than Sun St Passage. Nevertheless, it is fascinating to walk down; you fancy the yellow bricks quiver in the face of One Crown Pl.
Exchange Square is a good place to stop and spend a sunny afternoon in. From there, the actual destination of Sun St Passage leads to Liverpool St station. Bit disappointed when I couldn’t find the peek at Hawksmoor’s Christ Church as Nairn described - a consequence of the City’s endless expansion perhaps? The City bleeds further into its surroundings, melting old boundaries with its ever increasing strength of commerce. Is it for better or worse? Maybe only time will tell. Those clusters of glass towers certainly feel a little menacing sometimes.
As I caught my bus, a view of St Botolph-without-Bishopsgate concludes the trip. It’s one of the 3 St Botolphs in the area; there’s also Aldgate and Aldersgate. Whew! Church names amirite. (City church tour eventually, I promise.)

Phoenix Resistance - Book 2 Chapter 12
St Botolph's Church, Algate, London - March 22nd, 1998, 12:38 PM
The brown and green grass of spring crumpled beneath Eleanor’s boots as she walked among the weathered gravestones of St Botolph’s Church. Many graves were new and practically sparkled in the daylight. The rest were broken and slowly being consumed by moss. Time had reclaimed them and erased their names and dates from history.
She barely spared a glance at them, however. The grave she was looking for would not be here. No stone recorded the death of whom she sought.
Eleanor found a somewhat sturdy large headstone and sat upon it, hoping the occupant wouldn’t mind. Sighing, she looked around the graveyard and then up towards the church spire that towered into the murky gray sky.
It had been years, centuries even, and yet she could still hear it, like ghosts from the past. The sounds of the bells ringing in the streets as the wagons collected the dead. She could even see the houses locked up, red crosses hung with signs that read “Lord Have Mercy Upon Us”.
She hadn’t thought about them in over a hundred years. It had been three hundred and thirty two years since they had died. The one thing Azkaban allowed her was to spend endless time exploring her memories and recalling things once lost, as that was all she had in that dark and hopeless cell. Most of it was faint, as time had worn it from her mind, like a grave eroded by the rain.
Their names and faces were lost to her, but Eleanor knew they existed once. Her husband and children were buried somewhere under the earth nearby. During the Great Plague of London in 1665, thousands died and were buried in mass graves near the church in Aldgate. Eleanor would have joined them, if it weren’t for her immortality.
It was after their deaths that she swore never to get close to anyone else again, or to have children. If there was one thing she was grateful for, it was that her curse wasn’t passed down. She would never want anyone to experience this hell. Everything around her dies and she continues on, taking the slow path through the centuries.
A gentle rain started to fall, the drops breaking on the gravestones with a splash and soaking the new spring grass. Eleanor blinked hard and a water drop of her own rolled down her face and fell upon the stones, mixing with the rain. What kind of mother couldn’t remember her own children’s names?
She thought about her brother, Eme. Had he ever lost a loved one to the inevitable turn of the earth? She honestly doubted that he could experience love anymore. Eleanor almost envied his indifference to emotions. Without them, maybe she too would revel in immortality the way he did.
No. She would never want to be a monster like him. Maybe love is what saves people.
Lone Star Tavern, Whitechapel, London - March 22nd, 1998, 1:15 PM
The rain was coming down in heavy sheets by the time Eleanor walked in, soaked to the bone. She wandered over and slumped into a chair by the roaring fire where Kaari already sat.
“Did you fall in the Thames or something?” Kaari commented, eyeing her current state.
“I had children once.”
Kaari choked into his tankard of ale. “Come again?”
“The other day you asked me what I would know about being a parent. It was hundreds of years ago but I was a parent once.”
“Why are you telling me this? I’m an asshole and you are a badass who doesn’t give a fuck about us,” Kaari joked.
Eleanor’s face was suddenly soft, her eyes stared wistfully into the dancing flames. Kaari sat up, seeing her suddenly serious. It was the first time he had seen her guard dropped and he was curious to know more about her so he decided to shut up.
“It’s been a hell of a long time since I had anyone around me I could trust my secrets to. There’s no record of them anywhere, except in my head. But that too is deteriorating. I don’t remember any of their names,” she admitted.
“I just wanted them to exist in someone else’s head. They deserve that.”
The tavern was silent for a few moments, only the crackling of the fire and the pouring rain hitting the windows could be heard.
“I’m curious. Feel free to punch me in the face if you don’t want to answer, but have you ever gone looking for possible ways to end your immortality?”
Eleanor cocked her eyebrow and then reached for Kaari’s tankard, downing the last of the drink in one go, the liquid burning all the way down to settle into a warmth in her stomach.
“Of course. I searched for centuries.”
“And you haven’t found anything?”
“There was a moment in Azkaban. While a dementor was having their fill of the infinite bad memories I have, I almost felt like I would fade away and never come back. My body can regrow and heal from anything, but I’m not too sure if my soul could.”
The door of the tavern burst open, the loud downpour of rain disrupting their quiet moment. A courier for the Resistance dashed inside and didn’t spare a glance to the table as they made a beeline for the cellar. The look on their face gave Eleanor and Kaari a sinking feeling in their chest.
Devon was surprised as they frantically burst into her office and directly handed her a rolled parchment. She wasted no time and immediately began to decode it. The courier didn’t even hide the message in any of their normal means like flowers, bread, or wine bottles. Whatever was in this was urgent and an emergency.
Devon’s face began to pale as the message slowly became readable. At the same time, Kaari and Eleanor had made their way down and joined her in the office. She breathed heavily before signing to the group.
“A safehouse in Scotland fell. It was attacked by a single man and was set on fire.”
“There was a group of muggleborns there. I was scheduled to escort them here tomorrow so they could portkey to Paris,” Kaari murmured.
“Did any of them escape?”
“No. Everyone was either killed in the fire or taken prisoner.”
“It was Eme.”

Closed Starter for : @lucianriviera Timestamp : Sunday, October 7th, 1888, afternoon Location: Saint Botolph’s Church
The church was always packed on Sundays. As a child, it had been Polly’s favourite day of all, with plenty of opportunity to to dip light fingers into deep pockets. Old habits die hard. They had hung around at the back of the church throughout the service, and when it was over, and the people lingered to talk to each other, to the vicar, Polly took their fill. Their on pockets now laden with a wallet, a pocket watch and a handkerchief, there was finally, finally, little they could do to distract themselves. It was time to descend to the depths below. It was time to see Lucian.
There was no guarantee that he would be in, but somehow, Polly knew that he would have been waiting for them to come. That was the thing about Lucian - there was nobody quite so capable of being everywhere and nowhere at once, and whenever Polly wanted him, there he seemed to be, waiting to welcome them back to the halls of their childhood.
As expected, the children were milling around, comparing their treasures for the day. Polly smiled fondly, remembering when they were one of them. In many ways, they still were. A little older, perhaps, but just as lost. They hoped that their lives would turn out better than Polly’s had. They hoped for more for them.
Approaching a small wooden box where the spoils could be deposited, Polly surrendered the wallet and the watch, as they had many times before, handing over what they had to the collective. They were keeping the handkerchief, though. They’d sell it on later.
They turned, and there was Lucian. As they expected. Always where they needed him to be. Polly nodded a hello, wringing their hands anxiously. Waiting for something, an invitation perhaps.
“Decent turn out today,” they jerked their head upwards, to the churchyard above. “You’ll have done well.”

With spooky season just around the corner, do you have any fun ghost stories/weird encounters you could share?
A fair few.
. There’s an abandoned church not too far from where I live called St. Botolph’s in Skidbrooke. It’s a bit of a local legend, “Satanists” use to hang out there and occasionally some sheep are found killed in ritualistic fashion. It’s a bit place where every teenager needs to go at night, it’s like a rite of passage. When I went there some years ago with friends we didn’t experience anything inside but as we walked back down the country road to the car at night, I swear I saw a hooded figure on the tower looking down at us. We started to run lmao
. Decades ago one of my nanas neighbors called in a priest to bless their house from poltergeist activity. My nanas house especially in the spare bedroom has just real bad vibes. It was my mums bedroom growing up and she told me that there was something oppressive in their. My grandad died in February in that house and recently my nana has been seeing “faces” in the bathroom floor. I’m going around just to catch up but I’ll work something to hopefully shift whatever’s going on.
. When I was young, real young I would constantly see like a little Yorkshire Terrier that was jet black and would just appear right in the corner of my eye before vanishing.
. Whenever I suffer from sleep paralysis, which is very rare I always experience the same sensation. A man dressed in black with a fedora hat that hides his face rolls a cigarette at the end of my bed and just watches me.
. The theatre that I work at is terrifying when your alone and need to lock up, the lights are on stage left and the exit is stage right so you have to walk through the auditorium in darkness to get out. One time a seat in the auditorium just clanged down on its own and they naturally rest up, and our tech box is above the auditorium and has a little window so tech crew can see the stage and once I heard a voice come from it.
. There’s a popular pub in my town called the Yarborough, once a big Victorian hotel right next to the train line. For years the rooms and corridors upstairs were sealed up as the pub was only the ground floors. It’s been renovated recently back to a hotel and the upper floors have the new toilets. Several times when I go there I see the odd shadow, it’s not a very popular hotel so guests are scarce but man that place is freaky. Bad vibes.
. Weelsby Woods where I regularly walk my dog has a section that is unfortunately popular with people who commit suicide. It’s just a bad area of the woods, darker and more overgrown a little bit more out the way than the regular path. One afternoon as the sun was setting I could hear bagpipes being played from the thickets, I bounced pretty quickly.
. A dear work colleague of mine died at work, as in on the premises and he use to slap my bum whenever I bent over or squeeze my shoulder. Several times when I lock up I see a shadow moving quickly across the floor, or feel breathing just down my neck or just that sensation that someone is behind you. No slapped bum yet but quite frequently I think someone touches my shoulder or back but no ones there.
. My sister and her fiancé have lived in this house for maybe 7 years now and since day one they felt something a little bit off about it. The same phenomenon as above, fleeting shadows, silent whispers but whenever they have an intense argument (which is frequently apparently) things intensify and the phenomena becomes more apparent. They have a beautiful baby son now, my nephew, and for a while the activity ceased after I came around and performed a basic banishment and left apotropaic charms in areas of activity. However apparently it’s back.

Ted Hughes on Meeting Sylvia Plath
Our magazine was merely an overture To the night and the party. I had predicted Disastrous expense: a planetary Certainty, according to Prospero’s book. Jupiter and the full moon conjunct Opposed Venus, Disastrous expense According to that book. Especially for me. The conjunction combust my natal Sun, Venus pinned exact on my mid-heaven That conjunction, conjunct my Sun, conjunct With your ruling Mars. And Chaucer Would have pointed to that day’s Sun in the Fish Conjunct your Ascendant exactly Opposite my Neptune and fixed In my tenth House of good and Evil fame .....That day the solar system married us Whether we knew it or not
