Some Will-Centric Tidbits
since my Nico post is doing pretty well
He basically saved Annabeth's life in The Last Olympian by healing the poisoned stab wound in her shoulder
He's not fond of theft ("There's a Duane Reade on Fifth. Normally I would never steal--"/"I would," Travis volunteered./Will glared at him. "Leave cash or drachmas to pay, whatever you've got, but this is an emergency..." (The Last Olympian, p. 197).
He became head counselor pretty young, basically during the war with Kronos since Michael Yew, the former head of the Apollo cabin, died in the battle on Williamsburg Bridge
He's friendly with Annabeth and even lent her the Apollo cabin's chariot ("'Annabeth!' A guy with a bow and quiver on his back pushed through the crowd. 'I said you could borrow the chariot, not destroy it!'" (The Lost Hero, p. 36).
He's the one who showed Leo around camp in The Lost Hero
Will has a sort of calming presence ("'She's right.' Will Solace, head counselor for the Apollo cabin, put his hand gently on Clarisse's wrist. Not many campers could've done that without getting stabbed, but Will had a way of defusing people's anger. He got her to lower her dagger" (The Blood of Olympus, p. 135).
Nico described him as "a lanky cat stretched out in the sunshine" but also noted that Will was brave under fire despite his lax appearence, having personally seen him in action healing people during the Battle of Manhatten
He's a fan of sci-fi films, most notably the og Star Wars trilogy and Star Trek ("Will whistled appreciatively. 'I bet many Bothans died to bring us this information'" (The Tower of Nero, p. 126) and ("'Come on, Mr. Spock, I'll explain everything.' Will put a hand on his shoulder and steered him off toward the cabins" (The Lost Hero, p. 39).
His full name is William Andrew Solace (thanks, Nico)
His mother is Naomi Solace, an alt-country singer, and he was born in Autsin, Texas. Yeehaw.
His magical Apollo ability is being a human glowstick
He's an adept healer, but claims to suck at Apollo's other gifts-- archery, music, poems, etc.
Alluded to the fact that he's seen/spoken to Nico before their joint appearence in The Blood of Olympus, recognizing him on sight (Nico was about to attempt it when a voice behind him said, 'Nico?'/He spun, his sword instantly in his hand, and almost decapiatated Will Solace" (p. 417).
Will "flip-flops and jeans/scrubs" Solace
Poor guy delivered a satyr baby all on his own
He's a year-round camper
He's beyond proud of Apollo for accomplishing what he did as Lester. He loves his dad. Similarly, Apollo is just as proud of Will and his other children.
His one musical talent is an ear-splitting New York taxi cab whistle
He cares for Nico and his wellbeing (since they're bfs, and Will is in training to be a doctor), but Nico reciprocates these feelings and supports Will in the same ways. It's not one-sided ("Will changed his surgical gloves and glared at the woods. 'We will find them. We have to.'/Nico di Angelo gave him a canteen. 'Drink. Right now, this is where you need to be'" (The Hidden Oracle, p. 179).
He managed to stop a collision between the Greeks and Romans with his horrible taxi cab whistle ("Will Solace saved the day./He put his fingers to his mouth and did a taxicab whistle even more horrible than the last. Several Greeks dropped their swords. A ripple went through the Roman line like the entire First Cohort was shuddering./'DON'T BE STUPID!' Will yelled. 'LOOK!'" (The Blood of Olympus, p. 433).
Will and Rachel (and Nico) are buds
There's probably more. Feel free to add more. And hopefully we get more insight on his character in the Solangelo book.

These are some of the countless black lives lost to police brutality. There is no redemption for that department. Defund it, get rid of it. It's a waste, of people, of lives, of money and resources.

Will Star Wars Make The Mandalorian Jeans Guy Canon?
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This Star Wars: The Mandalorian article contains spoilers.
No character captured the spotlight in last week’s episode of The Mandalorian quite like Admiral Jeff Blue-Jeans, who literally stole the scene when an eagle-eyed viewer caught him in the background of an action sequence in “The Siege.” If you missed it the first time around, the cunning admiral can be seen in the bottom left corner of a shot, scheming while Greef Karga (Carl Weathers), Cara Dune (Gina Carano), and Mando fight off a platoon of stormtroopers inside the Imperial base on Nevarro.
Stream your Star Wars favorites right here!
Judging from his single appearance in the Star Wars saga (that we know of), it’s clear that he prefers to operate in the shadows, just as his Emperor once did, but like the classic Star Wars villains of yesteryear, he dons a unique look that allows him to stand out: a white t-shirt, a pair of blue jeans, and a truly menacing watch. That we never see the admiral’s visage only makes this shot more unnerving. In fact, it’s possible that the admiral is no man at all but, as director Carl Weathers said himself, “a bogey!”
A bogey! #BePeace https://t.co/vJnsMqtvfL
— Carl Weathers (@TheCarlWeathers) November 20, 2020
So, what do we know about Admiral Jeff Blue-Jeans besides the fact that his sense of style is second to none? Unfortunately, not much. Despite the fact that many Bothans died trying to leak a Wookieepedia entry meant to uncover the admiral’s plans for Mando and friends, the page was quickly taken down, with only a few lines for New Republic sleuths to examine.
“Admiral Jeff Blue Jeans was a male Imperial officer who fought with the Empire on several occasions,” the entry read before it was pulled by Wookieepedia’s admins. “Known for his strange look of a T-Shirt and blue jeans, he was a cunning warrior and a respected individual.”
Fortunately, despite attempts to cover up the truth, a few brave freedom fighters managed to get the word out about the mysterious admiral through memes like this one:
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
While we sit here wondering when we’ll be able to pre-order our very own Admiral Blue-Jeans action figure (complete with a wall that conceals most of his body), we have something else on our minds: is the admiral now part of official canon? Usually, the answer would be a no-brainer. The admiral is right there, clear as day, doing a Star Wars, which should technically make him part of Disney continuity. Yet, like “Maclunkey” and “midi-chlorians” (called “M-count” now, according to the episode) before him, it seems that the Whills have decided to strike the admiral from their sacred journal, a fate worse than being digested by the sarlacc.
The admiral isn’t the first beloved Star Wars character to be wiped from continuity since Disney rebooted the Expanded Universe almost a decade ago, but he does seem to be the first non-canon character to appear in an official canon entry in the timeline, and it’s likely that this will be all he’ll ever be remembered for. That, and his Levi’s. Were we at the opera, Emperor Palpatine would call this a tragedy.
But Star Wars is about hope. Even an infamous continuity error like Han Solo’s dice, which appeared in exactly one shot inside the Millennium Falcon’s cockpit in A New Hope before disappearing forever, was eventually canonized in The Last Jedi. It’s always possible that the admiral could don a new pair of jeans to reignite our nostalgia 40 years from now. And if not, Disney should at least consider him for the next Lego Star Wars Holiday Special?

While Admiral Blue-Jeans, Gina Carano, and the dark troopers have commanded much of The Mandalorian discussion in the days since the premiere of “The Siege,” plenty has also been said about Weathers’ work behind the camera, which often captures the energy and tone of A New Hope. From a chase sequence meant to evoke the Death Star trench run, to a nod to the famous opening shot of the movie, to a fight at the start of the episode that would make an armless Ponda Baba shudder in the grave, “The Siege” plays like Weathers’ love letter to George Lucas’ original vision, and we’re truly glad to see his take on the classic tale. If nothing else, the Admiral Blue-Jeans meme has only helped immortalize the first of what will hopefully be many more Star Wars stories from Weathers.

Cornelius Fredericks Could Not Breathe
By Heather Muir, Kalamazoo College Class of 2021
July 29, 2020
Cornelius Fredericks was a sixteen-year-old boy who at a young age, had already overcome many obstacles. At the age of twelve, his mother passed away in her sleep. His father was unable to care for him and his siblings at the time, so all four children were separated from one another and sent to different youth facilities. Before arriving at Lakeside Academy, Cornelius had been placed in two other facilities since his mother died. The first one was Wolverine Human Services in Detroit. According to a former peer support specialist, he loved making new friends, teaching others how to play chess, and showing off card tricks. He had hopes of one day becoming a counselor and helping others. “He was a tough kid with a really soft heart”, says Will White, a former peer support specialist at Wolverine who had gotten to know Cornelius[1].
On April 29th 2020, Sixteen-year-old Cornelius Fredericks was eating his lunch at Lakeside Academy in Kalamazoo, Michigan when he threw a piece of bread in the lunchroom. Minutes later, he was being physically restrained by the youth home’s employees. Seven staff members sat on his chest and weighed him down as he called for help yelling, “I can’t breathe”. Ten minutes later, he was released from the physical restraint, and his body went limp. It wasn’t until another twelve minutes after, when staff members decided to call 911. Cornelius was put on life support at Bronson Methodist Hospital and died on May 1st 2020[2]. After medical experts performed a biopsy and examined the recording of the incident from video surveillance cameras, it was confirmed that Cornelius’ death was a result of homicide.
In June, Cornelius’ extended family filed a civil lawsuit against Lakeside Academy and Sequel Youth and Family Services for $100 million. The lawsuit claims negligence/gross negligence and direct negligence pursuant to Michigan’s wrongful death act.
Pictured Above: Excerpt of Michigan’s Wrongful Death Act [3].
Unfortunately, the excessive force used on Cornelius and the abuse from Lakeside Academy was nothing new… Lakeside staff members had put Cornelius in physical restraints at least ten times in the six months he has been there. In one incident in January, police records show that staff reported to have restrained Cornelius for ten minutes. However, surveillance showed that he was in a physical restraint, unable to move for 36 minutes. Once he was released, the video showed him crying and unable to walk properly. Inconsistency in their reports and disregard for the wellbeing of children at the youth facility is not an uncommon behavior by some members of the staff there [1].Staff at these facilities are supposed to use trauma-informed techniques to help calm children down [5]. These places are meant to be safe spaces for children can receive the care and support that they need. Excessive use of force is an unacceptable form of discipline, especially for such minor incidents.
Pictured Above: Police report of prolonged physical restraint used on Cornelius in January [4].
The State of Michigan failed to recognize major warning signs about Sequel facilities. Sequel’s attorneys instructed staff members to not release any security footage, but officers had already obtained it. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services investigated Lakeside in 2018 after a resident had been subject to four unwarranted restraints, and staff members failed to report that the child had been injured in one of them. Another investigation in 2019 found that a staff member had punched a boy in the face and choked him, although the employee denied the incident ever happened. The department claimed that the State did not need to revoke Lakeside’s license, since the facility was submitting an “acceptable corrective action plan”. The facility was ill-equipped to continue caring for the children in their facilities, but Kalamazoo police had no authority to shut them down. It was up to Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, who according to records, were well aware of Lakeside’s shortcomings.Counties from all over Michigan sent children to Lakeside, and at least 30 of Cornelius’ peers came from out of state. In fact, Lakeside collected $427 per day per child from the state of Oregon. There are records that confirm officials from at least three states were concerned about the types of restraints used by Lakeside employees [1].
After Cornelius’ death, the agency discovered that 76 of 151 residential youth facilities in Michigan had either one incident in the past two years or repeat incidents that concerned children’s safety. The state has since made several changes to the way in which facilities like Lakeside will be overseen. There will now be at least four on-site reviews and restraints that restrict breathing will be banned. In addition, if a resident is restrained staff members must notify the child’s family within 12 hours and the department within 24 hours. Governor Gretchen Whitmer has ordered that the State’s Department of Health and Human Services cut ties with Sequel Youth and Family Services. Three Lakeside staff members, Michael Mosley, Zachary Solis, and Heather McLogan have been charged with involuntary manslaughter and child abuse charges.
These changes are a step, but they are certainly not enough. Black children like Cornelius are 35 percent more likely than white youths to be places in residential treatment facilities nationwide. 33 percent of children in foster care are Black, but Black children make up just 15 percent of U.S. children [6]. Residential programs like Lakeside should be an option of last resort. Chang, of Michigan’s Children’s Services Agency says, “Until we address how we use these facilities and stop warehousing in an environment where order and control is the most important factor and not meeting their therapeutic needs, there will always be this risk factor” [1].
The child welfare system in the U.S. has been broken for a long time, and it is tragic that Cornelius had to die because of it. His death exposes the deep change that needs to occur within the system and how dangerous it is to allow for the privatization of youth facilities. It also highlights how far too often;excessive use of force and punishment isused against Black and Brown bodies in this country by people in positions of power. George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Atatiana Jefferson, Aura Rosser, Stephon Clark, Bothan Jean, Philando Castille, Alton Sterling, Michelle Cusseaux, Freddie Gray, Eric Garner, Gabriella Nevarez, Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, Tanisha Anderson, Elijah McClain, Cornelius Fredericks, and too manyothers can no longer breathe because of the systemic racism that continually poisons this nation.
It is time for change, time to demand justice, time to take action, time to educate each other, and time fight for each other so that another preventable situation like this does not have to happen. This is not a bi-partisan issue.BLACK LIVES ALWAYS MATTER.

Botham Jean NEVER had a single ticket, a single arrest, a single conviction, or even a single behavioral note in college.
Not one. Ever.
For the police and media to attempt to insult his character and integrity today is a [predictable] disgrace.
Why are police investigating the victim and not the drunk cop who executed an innocent man?
