people are so uncomfortable with drug use and addiction that they will just completely strip it from their discussion of jesse as a character. they cant reconcile their affection for him with their deeply ingrained disgust for drug users. like they cant conceptualize that this very sympathetic, very human character they love is also an addict because Addicts are subhuman and Bad People. its just so emblematic of a total inability to see real life drug users as actual humans with complex lives and emotions that people will straight up act like jesse getting into the meth business was some wacky coincidence and not because he was a meth addict who was making and dealing meth to other users for the explicit purpose of making money. he can be ur special little guy and a drug addict who relapses several times and sells drugs to other people and makes awful decisions because of or in tandem with those things.

ive been looking at the female merc concepts that valve made back in the day and it really made me think about how a lot of the more popular female mercs are just genderbends of the original mercs.

nothing wrong with that, obviously, but i think it's infinitely more fascinating to treat them as their own characters since if valve had gone through with female mercs, theyd probably exist alongside the ones in the game.

anyways, meet the medic! she's a physician from britain who practices "natural medicine". not with normal things like herbs. stuff like "you have a cold? well, they say that drinking a single drop of lava from a volcano will fix you right up! ill go ahead and write a prescription~"

she has a belief that modern medicine is wrong and wants to change it from inside of the system. not because she thinks patient care can be improved, but because crystal tonic has medicinal value guys. trust me.

in addition to that, she's got a real fascination with the spiritual and demonic. after all, who cares about how you attain immortality? you have your entire unnatural lifespan to smooth out the rough parts!

P.E. is the epitome of cheap fixes and budget cuts. Nothing and I mean nothing they provide mixed with the way the expect it to be used is actually useful or good for the crew. Every policy is a warning label written in small text so they can obviously shirk responsibility if something goes awry.

They know they cant just leave weapons and potentially hazardous materials unlocked so they create a device that anyone can access but say only one person can use it. If someone else gets it and hurts someone well.... that's not their fault that's on the crew and Captain of course!

The code scanner, the auto pilot, the psych evals... They are all just smoke screens so P.E. can cover their asses and blame the crews and captains if something goes wrong they should of caught or done more to circumvent. There should be more standard and required ways to lock and unlock things. The auto pilot should not be so easily disabled especially if the ship can sense dangerous field. The evals are functionally useless since they go no where both being in space and the company clearly ignoring them/employees mental states.

It's the capitilsm of it all. It's the not actually caring if their employees are safe and secure. Imagine if they lost the damn thing? It'd fuck them over worse but then again they could just guess all the codes...

Maggie seeing Leroy as a parental figure will never not make me soft.

Maggie accidentally calling him dad. Leroy teasing her and telling dad jokes. Maggie beaming just a bit when he's proud of her and trying to shove that down cuz PSHHH NO SHE DOESN'T LIKE BEING PRAISED WHATEVER not like that's something she NEVER HEARS HA. Leroy reading bedtime stories sometimes when Maggie won't kill him for treating her more like a child than normal. Him feeling out of place while doing it. Maggie going to Leroy reluctantly when she can't deny she needs medical help and she can't go anywhere else BUT him. When they are together anyone would immediately notice just the sheer difference between their sizes and it's hilarious. If there were ever any Father Daughter events they'd make a wreck of the place with grins on their faces.

Maggie gets into trouble and Leroy is like:

There are quiet nights where Maggie is grieving and he's the only person she's able to vent to. Either because she hasn't become friends with Max yet, he isn't available, or it isn't something Max can help her with.

Part of their dynamic would step from the fact that Maggie's knowingly made choices just like Leroy. She still has the opportunity to change in part like Nova, but she also has a record and would be able to better relate to Leroy's experiences. She's not an infamous villain but still. Leroy's background would make him someone she'd be more likely to trust (after some time ofc) than Renegades like Callum or Adrian.

He wouldn't push for her to use her powers for the greater good, he wouldn't believe her potential was inherently to be used for selfless reasons, and that'd give him a better chance at connecting with her. I think anyway. I think she would better consider his advice than she ever did for Adrian or Callum. If he said, "You need to loosen up" he'd have a much better chance at convincing her. It's astonishing to anyone else who's had the displeasure of trying to work with her

Also did I mention that driving lessons would also be chaos? For starters Maggie might actually believe Leroy that the car used to be popular cuz Asset Perception and her knowledge in valuable things. She might decide to help out with fixing it up and making it look better. And then the actual DRIVING lessons would be something.

She drives just as recklessly as he does and Max would beg her to slow down whenever she's giving him a ride for xyz reason. She'd complain and grumble that anything appropriate to the speed limit is like driving like a granny.
