It's Day 12 of #PRHeritageMonthTour and the topic of the day is Puerto Ricans in Sports. I can't remember a day when my life didn't include one of the three B's: baseball, boxing or basketball. My fondest childhood memories have always revolved around one of these three. Even today, a ballpark is my favorite place to be. QOTD: Who's your favorite Puerto Rican athlete? Sports in Puerto Rico can be traced back to our TaΓno ancestors. One of the sports they played was a ball game called "Batey". The court was marked with a boundary made of stones carved with petroglyphs. The game had two teams who played with a rubber like ball that could only be hit by a shoulder, elbow, head, hips, buttocks and knees. Your hands were not allowed to touch the ball. If the ball came to a stop or went of of bounds of the stone boundary a falta was given. This version of the game evolved from the Maya pok ta pok and was simplified to the specifics of TaΓno culture and religion. I've compiled a list of famous Puerto Rican Athletes. To learn more about Puerto Ricans in Sports here is a list of books: πŸ‡΅πŸ‡· The Sovereign Colony: Olympic Sport, National Identity, and International Politics in Puerto Rico πŸ‡΅πŸ‡· Puerto Rico and Baseball: 60 Biographies πŸ‡΅πŸ‡· Baby Bull: From Hardball to Hard Time and Back πŸ‡΅πŸ‡· Molina: The Story of the Father Who Raised an Unlikely Baseball Dynasty πŸ‡΅πŸ‡· The Journey Home: My Life in Pinstripes πŸ‡΅πŸ‡· Where Tomorrows Aren't Promised #PRHeritageMonthTour #sports #boricua #bookstagrampr #PR #books #bookish #bookworm #bookstagrammer #sportslover #PRHeritageMonth #bibliophile #booksbooksbooks #booklover #reading #boricuabookstagram #bookrecommendation #TBR (at Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/CWMRjRtrKjO/?utm_medium=tumblr

Congratulations to one of Bushwick's finest @elisabetvelasquezpoetry. If you didn't pick up a copy yet, what are you waiting for? Here is a little preview from "The Daily News Says" The people at The Daily News have a story to print. The people in the streets have their own story to tell. And I'm writing my own story so that I can remember it accurately in case someone tries to tell it for me. Elisabet Velasquez has a story to tell about: πŸ‡΅πŸ‡· what it means to come from broken places and survive daily πŸ‡΅πŸ‡· what it means to be boricua, Nuyorican, Puerto Rican and from Bushwick πŸ‡΅πŸ‡· the beauty of community πŸ‡΅πŸ‡· navigating identity through mixed messaging πŸ‡΅πŸ‡· coming of age and womanhood while surviving misogyny πŸ‡΅πŸ‡· what it means to make it when society says we shouldn't πŸ‡΅πŸ‡· what it means to never lose hope and keep dreaming πŸ‡΅πŸ‡· the importance of taking control of our personal narratives Run and get this book. Don't walk! Pick one up for yourself and bless someone else. #WhenWeMake #ElisabetVelasquez #penguinteen #novelsinverse #books #YAbooks #ReadPuertoRican #readCaribbean #poetry #boricua #boricuabooks #boricuaAuthors #latinxbookstagram #readLatinx #ownvoices #boricuabookstagram #Nuyorican #latinxbooks #bookish #newrelease #bookdragon #YArecs #bookworm #bibliophile #bookrecs #bookphotos #booksandflowers #bookfeature #Bushwick #Brooklyn (at Little Island NYC) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUF_i3VrQtH/?utm_medium=tumblr

Happy Friday! I'm just passing through today with a #GuideFriday and #ReadPuertoRican list for middle grade fans. QOTD: What book outside of your culture gave you a new perspective? Putting these lists together bring me so much joy because I get to turn around and share them with my fellow boricuas. You don't know how much erasure of culture has transpired until you start to search for yourself in pages. This is why I advocate so much for decolonizing our shelves and mindsets as readers. I remember how middle grade me looking for characters that reflected me fully and the sadness of finding next to none. Reading middle grade is how I recapture the magic and find the parts of myself that were lost. #GuideFriday #ownvoices #ReadPuertoRican #boricua #ReadCaribbean #ReadLatinx #decolonizeyourshelf #books #PuertoRico #middlegrade #BoricuaBooks #bookdragon #PuertoRicanLit #bookstagram #latinxbookstagram #bookish #boricuaAuthors #reading #boricuabookstagram #PR #bookrecs #booklist #latinx #welovemglit #bibliophile #bookworm #bookphotos (at Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/CS0CBkOrTaa/?utm_medium=tumblr

It's a rainy Friday today. No guide today but I do have a new #ReadPuertoRican and #readCaribbean review and recommendation. "Americanos son locos, that's for sure." I said to Cheito. QOTD: What monster did you grow up hearing about in your culture? Tales from the Barrio and Beyond by Irma Olmedo was the short story collection I needed to get me out of the funk I have been in. I loved each of these stories. Each one felt like a warm kiss and abrazo from my tΓas and abuelitas. It was like being in the sala listening to family stories during the holidays. The stories felt like a little piece of home from the food, to the topics to the characters to the refranes. I smiled with nostalgia from the NYC references. I loved that the author included two stories featuring LGBTQIA+ characters. If you're in the mood for Boricua barrio memories, I highly recommend you pick this one up. I know I will be rereading it many more times when I'm missing the comforts of Puerto Rico. *Please note you will never think about dog food, dentures or the Cuco the same again after reading these cuentos.* #ReadPuertoRican #BoricuaBooks #BoricuaAuthors #shortstories #OwnVoices #LatinxBookstagram #BoricuaBookstagram #BooksandArt #BooksandMurals #BooksOutside #bibliophile #BookDragon #boricua #BookReviews #bookrecs #books #PuertoRicanLit #Spanglish #barrio #FloricantoPress #IrmaOlmedo #PuertoRico #Serranosisters #spreadartnyc #bushwick #Latinx #ReadCaribbean #BookPhotos #BookFeature (at Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPbq475Lvm-/?utm_medium=tumblr

Happy Friday! I am super excited about today's #GuideFriday and #ReadPuertoRican book list. I love to promote boricua works but it brings me extra joy to be able to so to a younger audience. QOTD: What is a favorite children's book that is close to your heart? When I say "representation matters" I'm not just using buzzwords. It is vital for identity formation and boosting self esteem that children be exposed to stories with characters where they can see themselves depicted accurately. Inclusive stories are also important for broadening horizons and building empathy and perspective for others who may be different. I love that children's books allow for building imagination about a multitude of topics and spark great questions and conversations with others. If you have Littles in your life, take some time to peruse your shelves and make sure their library reflects not only themselves but the greater world around them. The greatest gift my mom and aunt ever gave me were books that kept me tied to my Puerto Rican roots. #GuideFriday #Fridaypost #booklist #ReadPuertoRican #boricua #bookstgrampr #BoricuaBooks #bookfeature #boricuaAuthors #bookish #bookstagram #diversereads #childrensliterature #reading #picturebooks #ownvoices #PuertoRico #boricuastories #bookdragon #bookworm #boricuabookstagram #books #booklover #diversereads #representationmatters #bookguide #childrenread #weneeddiversebooks #ReadCaribbean (at Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTp4qcQrIze/?utm_medium=tumblr
