In case you need a laugh tonight...
John Travolta is 6'2. Samuel L. Jackson is also 6'2. Here's a picture for comparison. It's from the 2022 Oscars.
Or, at least he was 6'2 when he was dancing with Diana. Look at their eye levels in this picture; there's a difference of about two inches. We know that Diana was 5'10 and she wore a heel of 2", which would put her at 6' tall. This picture confirms there's about a 2-3" difference in height between them.
Now let's look at a few more people.
Prince William is 6'3. Prince Harry is 6'1. In this pair of pre-Meghan photos, you can see their height difference clearly while standing (somewhat) shoulder to shoulder.
Above, from the Heads Together launch in May 2016. Below, from Pippa's wedding in May 2017.
Why specifically use pre-Meghan photos? Because once Meghan moved in and did her Girlfriend Makeover to Harry after the engagement, Harry began wearing lifts in his shoes to look as tall as William. Most famously at this event, the unveiling of Diana's statue in the Kensington Palace Gardens, July 2021.
Okay, so let's recap: Prince William is 6'3. John Travolta is 6'2. Harry is 6'1.
Then how is this possible?
This is easily a 3-4" height difference. The standard men's heel height in a dress shoe is about 1".
But wait, y'all. It gets funnier. Jeff Bezos is 5'7. Lauren Sanchez is 5'3 and she usually in pretty tall high heels, so let's say she's 5'7 in heels.
Now, Bezos looks a little bit taller and Travolta a little bit shorter because of their anges and position - Bezos is closest to the camera, Travolta furthest (note his body turned behind Lauren). But angles, positions, and perspective do not make Harry loom over the three of them like a giant.
So what do you think? Did Harry go to Ron DeSantis's bootmaker or did he borrow Meghan's shoes for the night?
One last question: Has Harry ever looked at Meghan the way he looked at John?

The origins of the cowboy boot can be traced back to the early 19th century, when cattle ranching became a booming industry in the United States. With the vast expanse of open land in the West, cowboys were essential in herding and driving cattle across long distances. These horse-riding, lasso-wielding pioneers needed a sturdy and practical boot that could withstand the harsh conditions of ranch life.
It was during this time that a shoemaker named Charles Hyer, based in Olathe, Kansas, saw an opportunity. Hyer, known for his craftsmanship and innovation, set out to design a boot that would cater specifically to the needs of the cowboys. He began by incorporating a higher heel, which allowed riders to secure their feet in the stirrups more effectively, preventing their feet from slipping during long rides.
To enhance durability and protection, Hyer reinforced the toe of the boot with a metal toe cap, a feature that would soon become synonymous with cowboy boots. This added layer of armor not only shielded the cowboy's toes from sharp objects but also served as a handy tool for kicking unruly cattle and even fending off potential threats.
But it wasn't just functionality that Hyer focused on. He understood that style played an equally important role in the cowboy's self-expression. Hyer introduced intricate stitching patterns, often inspired by Native American and Mexican designs, which added a touch of artistry and individualism to each boot.
Word of Hyer's innovative cowboy boots spread like wildfire, and soon other bootmakers across the West began adopting his design principles. As the popularity of cowboy boots soared, variations in style emerged, reflecting the unique customs and cultures of different regions. Whether it was the tall, pointed-toe boots of Texas or the more practical, round-toe boots of the Great Plains, each version carried its own charm and character.

Don't you think it's a tad contradictory to admire someone like Valerie Solanas while also fangirling hard for the likes of Terry Richardson and Nobuyoshi Araki? Men like Richardson and Araki were kind of the reason why the SCUM manifesto was written in the first place.
Pump the brakes for a second here, when have I ever fangirled at all, let alone hard, for Terry Richardson? He’s a rapist, which I don’t think Araki is. Same with Robert Crumb etc.
Anyway, I don’t say ‘admire’ uncomplicatedly, but we have a serious language problem here - which is what gets us to ‘fangirling’. I’m impressed by Araki, sometimes in the same way you might be impressed by a 20 foot high heap of skulls. No, it’s not great that someone got all those skulls but it’s impactful. Araki has committed himself absolutely to inhabiting the persona of this weird horny misogynist demonic pornographer, Solanas committed herself absolutely to the persona of a humourless man-hating shrill harridan feminist. In both cases I admire the dedication.
More to the point, if Valerie Solanas had shot (and hit) Nobuyoshi Araki, not only would she have been in the right but I think he would have agreed.
I think part of being a woman is that the art of misogynists is going to impact you whatever you do - responding to it, engaging with it, even positively at times - that, to me, isn’t enabling it. I’m a dyke too and I like some Baudelaire poems. I guess we could have some latter-day Valerie dig him up and shoot him, but if the boot is on your face I don’t think it’s an inexplicable response to look at the quality of the bootmaking.

Ameya!
(belongs to @vanessasdialupstalker )
So In ameyas timeline, her family and a few others (the cloakmakers, glovemakers, watchmakers, and bootmakers) make stuff for Vanessa, her mother and Prince. They all had good financial support but when Maureen (Ameyas middle sister) got sick and ameya were born, they didn’t have much money to buy the supplies and medicine. After a long talk they decided to abandon ameya in a new timeline entirely so she couldn’t find her parents when she got older. They forced sylvie to steal a timepiece from the royal family and give it to them, using it to travel to the forgotten princes realm and leave ameya, prince moonjumper Found Ameya and he decided to adopt her. Ameya really liked hats, specifically crowns and top hats! which explains her crown ^^ but she started to get sad and hurt when she learned that she was given up because of money problems and her own existence.

3 Expert Shoemakers Say Ron DeSantis Is Probably Wearing Height Boosters
“I’ve dealt with these politicians many times,” says Zephan Parker, the bespoke bootmaker behind Houston’s popular Parker Boot Company, which, he says, has made height-increasing cowboy boots for a number of Texan politicians. (No, he won’t reveal any names.) “I’ve helped them with their lifts. [DeSantis] is wearing lifts; there’s no doubt.” For Parker, there are two giveaways. At a DeSantis campaign event in Tampa, a photo was taken of him from his side, showing the governor in his black cowboy boots and navy worsted suit. Traditional Western boots are typically built with an elevated heel, ranging from 1 1/2” to 1 7/8”. DeSantis’ boots have a traditional Western silhouette, but, to Parker, the heels appear shorter. When you stick inserts into cowboy boots, the combination of the height-increasing lifts and the heels can “turn them into five-inch stilettos,” Parker says. “That’s too much for the common man. So on a ready-made boot, they’ll cut down the heel about half an inch to accommodate the lifts, which looks to be what happened here.” (Shaving down the heels does negate some of the height value of having lifts in the first place.)
Why doesn't DeSantis just wear "five-inch stilettos"? 😆
Ron's heels have not boosted his stature among Republicans. He may have gotten a tiny temporary boost from Mike Pence dropping out, but he's still in the cellar with Nikki Haley and the increasingly unhinged Vivek Ramaswamy.
Close to 80% of Republicans favor candidates who are a danger to democracy – regardless of height.

The craft of Hobson's Choice
Hobson's Choice is a classic British movie from 1954 (well, it's based on a play and there are several other movie adaptations, but the 1954 one is the greatest). I love it, and it's been a perennial yuletide request of mine for a reason. It's about two people, father and daughter, though of course the father is the one people tend to focus on, the daughter gets just as much screen time and it's her actions and choices that drive the main plot of the movie more than her father. He sets things in motion at the beginning, and then spends the rest of the movie having to react to the things his daughter does. The Hobson family own a boot shop in late-19th-Century Britain, a very well-respected shop, but the father doesn't have much to do with it. His workers in the basement make the boots, and his daughter Maggie (the eldest, plainest, and most practical) runs the shop part of the business, while her father spends most of his days in the pub. There are two younger daughters, both of an age to get married, both fashionable and pretty (and snobbish), and they do the housekeeping and cooking and such while courting two local men. Hobson, who is a foul-mouthed, snobbish, misogynistic, selfish bully, declares that he won't give his daughters "settlements" (i.e. the dowry that a respectable girl from a family like theirs would be expected to have), and without that money it'll be very hard (if not impossible) to get husbands. But that won't matter to Maggie, whom he's decided conveniently is an old maid who will spend her whole life working for him for free. Maggie has other plans. She has her eye on Will Mossop, her father's best bootmaker. Will is a shy, gentle man who is incredibly good at making high-class shoes. He's been bullied and dismissed his whole life, but Maggie can see what a good person he is. She tells him they're going to marry, and honestly she doesn't give him much choice in the beginning; but he's happy, and one of the things she consistently does is help him so that by the end of the movie he's self-confident and capable of standing up for himself. Maggie also arranges to take advantage of her father's drunken blunders to see to it that her sisters can have settlements to marry the men they want, and by the end of the movie Hobson has had his comeuppance and Maggie and Will are in charge of everything. It's funny, it's sweet, it's about how stupid snobbishness and class-sensibility is, it's really good. (Also, it's one of the few cases of my knowledge where a female adult is played by a woman much older than the character--the actress was 45, the character's age is given as 30 several times.) It's now on Youtube free with ads. I was watching it and was reminded of not just how much I love it, but how well-crafted it is. Everything fits together, and everything is done for a purpose. It's not just that it's well-written and well-acted, which it is. It's also well-directed, well-lit, the camera work is excellent as is the music and the editing. Every single thing in it works together cohesively. It's not just "this is a cool shot," it's "this shot is telling us something about the mood or theme or setting up a bit of humor." Every camera angle, every pan, every bit of music, every line of dialog, every move the actors make, it's all relevant and part of the story and characters and theme. I just finished watching it, and honestly, I want to start it over again from the beginning. comments Comment? https://ift.tt/1Eq3oxX

ok this is a bit of a strange one but: didn't you have oxford shoes? which ones? i'm looking and looking but can't seem to find ones i like
Hello anon!
Yes I did have Oxford shoes. Two pairs. One I bought from a Peckham shoe store in London, I don’t remember the name, but they were school uniform shoes, very cheap. They lasted me a few months of constant use until I got a new pair.
I also bought a nice fancy pair from Jones Bootmaker for 80ish pounds, but I never ended up wearing them cause it took time to lace up, and they were quite nice. They’re in storage so I may wear them someday.
You could try online! A nice leather pair might be pricey though.

The next day the bootmaker, linen-draper, and tailor all returned armed each with his bill, which Lucien, still under the charm of provincial habits, paid forthwith, not knowing how otherwise to rid himself of them. After he had paid, there remained but three hundred and sixty francs out of the two thousand which he had brought with him from Angouleme, and he had been but one week in Paris! Nevertheless, he dressed and went to take a stroll in the Terrassee des Feuillants. He had his day of triumph. He looked so handsome and so graceful, he was so well dressed, that women looked at him; two or three were so much struck with his beauty, that they turned their heads to look again. Lucien studied the gait and carriage of the young men on the Terrasse, and took a lesson in fine manners while he meditated on his three hundred and sixty francs.
