@kndrules said I should talk about the Hoagie shutdown HCs for hours so that's my excuse for doing such (CW for S/H and some brief abuse & addiction mentions)
Hoagie is more quiet than his teammates. That's kind of something people don't notice because the way he's quiet is kind of different because of his neurodivergence. Yes, he talks. Yes, he socializes. But the way in which he does these things is very obviously a quiet kid. He lets other people lead conversations. He tends to follow the actions of others. He talks excessively if you let him, but the moment someone shows any form of rejection or disapproval of it, he stops talking. He stays behind everyone else, or at least behind the "leader" of the scene. And overall, his personality would cause some pretty obvious outcasting from groups in school. But these are some pretty boring aspects of canon and it's hardly ever thought about, so I'm gonna expand upon it.
Hoagie shuts down fast and he shuts down OFTEN. He's rejection sensitive. Now, he's not oblivious. If Wally says something like, "you're so stupid!" he takes it as a joke. The issue is if Wally used a tone that was *off* from his normal joke tones. Intentionally or not, a different tone in any way. Those words would start to ring in Hoagie's ears. He starts to overthink, and of course - shutdown. Anything he was saying prior to this, he'd slowly fade the conversation out and eventually stop talking or responding. He'd try to get himself to a secluded area as soon as he could, to prevent attention being drawn to him. He does a really good job with fading out from conversation because no one knows it's happening until he tells them. They just think he got bored and left.
Like I said, this happens often. Nigel scolding him, him getting bullied at school, Abby ignoring him to focus on work. The list goes on. He's too scared to express how these things make him feel, so he has a shutdown just about every day. His family further encourages this behavior by rewarding silence and scolding him for speaking. Tommy experiences the same stuff, but confidence boosts from Hoagie prevent Tommy from shutting down and staying silent when he's being mistreated. Hoagie never had anyone to stand up for him, though... At least, not after their dad died. He was the only one who tried to stand up for him.
He does a lot of hiding due to his environment at home. His shutdowns always result in him locking himself away and trying to get people to focus on someone else if they try to see what's up. He doesn't have any good coping mechanisms so, to try and "get it over with" he cuts (something he learned about on the early internet). After that, he'll go on to use an actual healthy coping skill like working on his projects or spending time with someone (once he finds his voice again). He feels a lot of guilt for it but because he hides his emotions, it takes a while for people to figure out what's going on and help him out.
In any situation causing distress and self confidence issues, Hoagie will shut down. It tends to happen with raised voices the most, though. If they're away from the treehouse on a mission somewhere and won't be going back for a while, he'll disappear wherever possible. He even becomes known for it, at least to Nigel. Unfortunately, Hoagie has a razor with a seal guard to protect the fabric in his pocket at all times, so he still engages with harmful mechanisms even when away from the treehouse. He put it there for that very reason, but it does double as a good tool if he's in trouble and caught in something... I guess
His shutdowns were a major part of his life from 10-13. They caused loneliness, a lack of help and support, and further fear. Not to mention the harm it caused to his arms because of how he decided to deal with it every time it happened.
On the bright side, Abby and Wally eventually realized things were going on. Wally wasn't much help in his teen years because he fell down the same hole of depression that Hoagie did especially during high school where he was forced to be misgendered, but he helped whenever sane enough to do so. It started off with Abby getting a bit concerned by his tendencies to slip off after Hoagie had mention he loves listening to conversations normally. She tried to be discrete when asking him things about the shutdowns, until they were on a mission away from the treehouse and Abby asked Hoagie if he had anything like scissors to cut something off an old file. She was handed the "infamous stained razor" and of course, freaked the fuck out on him. Not to scare him or anything, but it kind of did since she started asking a bunch of questions he didn't think he'd ever be asked as she paced around anxiously, hitting herself on the head and preventing him from even getting CLOSE to the razor he'd lended her. After that she started being more nosey about his shutdowns. She refused to let him suffer from them as much as he did because she knew he didn't have to. Over time, she managed to understand the signs of shutdowns. Wally did, too. If either of them are around when his shutdown starts, they immediately identify it and follow him off to wherever he ends up going. This soon turned to them actively being found by Hoagie during his shutdowns, and given a simple hand signal to let them know he shut down and needs to be watched over in a safe environment (since by this time at 13-14 he's suffering from genuine addiction to harm, and needs supervision when at risk). They tend to haul him off to a nice, cozy place in the treehouse. There, they'll do whatever Hoagie pleases. He doesn't speak, but he'll make it clear what he wants to do. He'll drop playing cards in front of them, he'll turn on the TV and cling to their sides, sometimes he'll just fall asleep or cuddle up in their arms. His shutdowns became far less stressful and dangerous after Abby and Wally found ways for him to shut down and then unwind in a safe environment. In late teen years Wally became incapable and even unsafe to be around at certain points due to doing the exact same harmful things Hoagie did at that time but Abby still helped keep him safe whenever possible and, in rare instances Wally would be able to when he wasn't unsafe. Abby also did searches of both of Hoagie's rooms (with his permission) every month to cleanse the area of harmful stuff so he couldn't hurt himself even if he didn't properly identify a shutdown and seek help for it. She came out of there with a looot of different things she didn't even know could be used. She disposed of them in secret locations and soon enough she wasn't finding anything in his rooms, which meant his shutdowns were either being had with his trusted partners, or he was capable of having a shutdown all alone without harm being caused. That part kind of goes beyond that point and he does have (even worse) problems still but that doesn't really correlate with his shutdowns so that's for anyone who's interested in his problems with addictions which I'll talk about if people are interested

As much as he trusts and would have no qualms allowing friends in his quarters, it's a bit too personal. Maybe only a few and not all. Plus, I imagine his room is (2) constantly pumping Dorin gas so he can just plop down on his bed when he's tired ♥.

This would also (3) help him not require to acclimate. Given that he should be able to just pull his mask off and take a deep breath, unclipping his mask would entail a few seconds of the filter mechanism would release oxygen in mid-conversion or something similar of acclimation, really. Please don't let me go through the Science of this, it's 5 AM from where I'm from and I just wanna cuddle this Kel Dor God of mine ♥

While I think it's highly unlikely to happen at the moment, it would be interesting if Laudna attempted a Warlock Patron Swap from Delilah to Ashton.
I suppose the first question to this hypothetical is: Does Ashton have the power to be a Patron?
I would say 'yes.' They've got their Dunamantic Baby Titan shit going on, which has the kind of power and potential to unnerve a Level 20 Archdruid that helped seal away a newborn god. Also, Delilah is a fucking Patron and she's just a clever Archmage necromancer who cuddled up to a demigod trying to go pro. I think Ashton's qualifications trump hers.
Next question: What about Laudna's Delilah-supported unlife?
I'm not sure that Delilah actually provided any help on that front besides the initial boost back from the dead. Sure, there's some Delilah flavoring for Strength of the Grave, but that comes from her Sorcerer Subclass: Shadow Magic, and thus is not actually mechanically tied to anything Delilah.
Also, at this point, Laudna is alive thanks to the resurrection ritual Pike ran on her specifically after Bells Hells suppressed or temporarily severed the connection to Delilah. So ditching the necromancer shouldn't kill Laudna.
Third question: What happens to Laudna's Warlock Subclass?
Technically, arguments can be made for Ashton to support a continuation of the Undead subclass. He's cheated death at least once with the dunamis to the brain. Which could be a very permanent 'fuck off' to death if it also consecuted Ashton in that event, and I think there's a high probability to that. Not to mention that 'every iteration of my life exists within my head' can totally have some more Undead juice to give to Laudna.
Though I think it would also be interesting for Laudna to end up with a different subclass as well.
Undying fits the above argument for Ashton better than Undead, as they do not persist on a state of unlife, but rather a cycle of rebirth via consecution, and possibly a Titan's longevity/potential immunity to aging (that hasn't had a chance to come into play, or not, yet).
To really change it up would be to go with the Genie subclass. I don't think I need to argue why Ashton can Patron as the one elemental subclass for warlocks. And this would probably add the most versatility to Laudna's capabilities and provide a new challenge to keeping her aesthetic. Also, it would be really funny if she turned her birdhouse into the pact vessel.
Fourth question: Would Laudna make the switch?
Maybe.
Laudna is certainly on friendlier terms with Ashton than Delilah, and she has expressed an interest in Primordial powers over Divine.
Though I worry about the trust that would be needed for Laudna to make the switch. She had her little outburst in ep70, thinking Ashton would kidnap Imogen. Which could just be trauma-induced paranoia, but if it's not, well, that's a hit. And there was also the little trust mess from when FCG first snapped, including how Delilah seems to have semi-groomed Laudna to not trust others besides herself.
There is also the issue that, as some posts have pointed out, Laudna is not terribly active about getting rid of Delilah despite her stated distaste for having Delilah around.
I realize that at this point in the story (ep70), Laudna's trying to squeeze any extra power out that she can for the coming fights, but, on the other hand, 30 years without breaking into libraries and laboratories and anywhere that might have answers on how to exorcise this necromantic bitch? When Laudna is living a life with practically nothing to lose? It's just incredibly passive about having an unwanted passenger. And even when severing the connection was mentioned as something to learn at the Starpoint Conservatory along with finding information on Imogen's dreams, it seemed more like a goal of Imogen's than Laudna's. Or at least a goal that Imogen came up with to rescue Laudna from Delilah, and Laudna went along with it because it sounded nice and Imogen wanted to do it.
I think, in a way, Laudna has given up on being rid of Delilah, and I think that would get in her way for accepting, or even attempting to acquire, a new Patron.
So yeah. Interesting thing that's probably never going to happen. But, I'll be pleasantly surprised if it does end up happening (and a little bit smug that I penned the thought down beforehand).

Pruning! It’s part of the key skill set for any gardener. While plants will grow without it, pruning is a valuable technique for encouraging new growth, shaping particular forms and sizes, increasing yields and preventing diseases.
TOOLS:
Before Jerry even begins, he takes an inventory of the tools he will use for the job. Different tools are used for different parts of the tree in different ways, namely
Secateurs: fine work on soft to semi-hard material. Great for thinning foliage or new shoots, but avoid trying to get through thicker wood
Loppers: Jerry describes these as halfway between secateurs and a saw. They’re a bit heavier and physically harder to use than the secateurs, but can make short work of thicker branches (by use of a ratchet mechanism) that seccies wouldn’t even scratch
Folding hand saw: “Small and narrow, it’s nimble and can fit into confined spaces like a congested tree crown” Will make a precise cut on hard wood
Extension tree pruner: a lopper on the end of a long pole, to be used in the same way as the lopper for branches out of reach
Extension tree saw: Similar to the folding saw, but on the end of a long pole. Used in the same way, but for limbs and branches out of reach from the pruner
Bow saw: Necessary for getting through the thickest branches, but Jerry notes the size and sawing motion “requires more clearance”.
JERRY’S 4 STEP PLAN TO TAKE BACK YOUR LIFE:
Looking at a tree that’s become a mess can be overwhelming. Where to begin? What stays and what goes? Fortunately, Jerry has a 4 step patented methodology that makes it easy. This approach not only works for mangoes, it can be applies to any fruit tree you need to prune.
1. Identify structural branches and work back from these. Structural branches are the largest branches that hold up the trees canopy. We want to keep these to preserve the architecture and overall shape and integrity of the tree, so it’s important to be aware of them before we launch into a frenzy
2. Remove any dead, diseased or dying wood. These are the first priority and should be pruned with impunity. Dead wood can be identified by scratching the bark with a fingernail; live material will be green underneath, dead will be grey. Look for signs of visible signs of decay like borer holes, snapped branches, fungus, scratched or split bark.
3. Crossing branches. Branches that cross over or near to each other can rub in the wind. This gradually shears off the protective bark, creating a window for infections to get inside the tree. Preventatively removing the branch prevents the friction.
4. Clearing out the interior of the tree in this way also has another benefit; boosting airflow through the tree. This helps to prevent diseases, as many fungus pathogens prefer damp, still and shaded leaves.
Work on the crown and canopy. Now that you’ve done the immediate first aid, it’s time to work on the overall crown of the tree. Jerry says it’s important to maintain fruit trees at “a safe picking height”, to prevent accidents when harvesting fruit or doing occasional pruning.
AFTER PRUNING CARE
Jerry warns to avoid any after-pruning wound treatments or preparations, as these only “seal disease into the plant and impair natural healing”.
Now that Jerry’s gone to all the trouble of pruning these trees, he wants to make sure they’re well prepared for the rebound. The grass underneath is vigorous, and would be competing for valuable water and nutrients. Jerry will brush-cut it to keep it down.
We can expect this tree to respond within the year, usually with a significant fruit set. Jerry might just check back in to pick up a box of mangoes or two.
Pruning a fruit tree needn’t be a daunting task. With the right tools and following some simple methodology, it can be a fun way to spend an afternoon. And the results will quite literally be the fruits of your labour.

Hey, give this FE8 fan hack a try :)
So recently, Rengor told me about this FE8 fan hack that I decided to give a try, and it was WELL worth it.
Made by Scraiza, Souls of the Forest is a fan hack of Sacred Stones that tells a completely new story with all new maps of its own. It’s still under development, but it’s in a very good place as of the time of this writing, with one of its two planned story routes completed.
So fun features?
It’s got a bow lord (they’ll have customizable features in a later version, but as of the time of this writing Beryl can only be youthful guy), while your Jagen is the troubled Valkyrie Rakel.
The game gets unabashedly busted, with items both early and great having seriously high power behind them. Foot units especially tend to make out like bandits to compensate for their lower move and lack of access to Canto.
Though that’s not to say the mounted units are completely screwed, because they have the Tellius version of Canto.
There’s also holdable items that grant hefty stat boosts for being held, and staffs that boost the damage or durability of the units they’re used on. You also pick up multiple Hammerne (though they can only be used on weapons in this hack) and Warp staffs for extra fun.
Let that sink in. You get two mounted staffer dancers, and a unit with Xane’s gimmick!
Rest assured, the gameplay is balanced around these features and you’ll have to use all the tools in your arsenal to come out on top. You’ll just have a lot of fun doing it with crazy numbers in the meanwhile.
Effective weapons and the weapon triangle play a larger role, and as such, both have upgraded versions, as do Brave weapons. There’s even weapons that exist to impart stat bonuses to the holder if they have S rank in the given weapon type.
Speaking on the Weapon Triangle, it’s made stronger in this hack, modifying damage by +-4 and hit rate by +-15%. Reaver weapons double this modifier, and Reaver vs Reaver combat doubles it again. Since effective damage in the GBA games scale with being at triangle advantage or disadvantage, using a Reaver weapon to place an effective weapon at disadvantage will harshly reduce the damage dealt. Then you get Reversal weapons, which reverse the triangle and have double the impact on it that Reavers do.
There’s also other smaller quality of life mechanics, such as a warning indicator for effective or killer weapons in enemy possession, an indicator for when thieves will open chests or brigands will sack villages, an indicator for when enemies will drop items, and an indicator when enemies have an item to steal. Vulneraries and Elixirs are always dropped, so steals are almost exclusively master seals or stat boosters.
Although there’s a LOT of units in the game, Scraiza did an excellent job of giving them fascinating stat lines. For example there’s Troy here who joins as a Brigand with capped Power, Speed, and Luck, and high growths in the first two stats and high hp, but with basically zilch in either bases or growths for Skill, Def, or Res. Then there’s Emma, the tank thief, or Tero with his shitty bases but ability to endless promote while also having high stat caps and the ability to use weapons and items locked to armor units, or Nuar with her 0 across the board bases but access to unique prf status staves (the only ones in the game in fact!) and growths that hover around 200% in each stat.
And you’d do well to train a pretty good selection of units, because the final few maps have some very high deploy caps!
The hack has three levels of difficulty (it’s balanced around the highest, Lunatic) and has built-in customization options for Reverse mode, Anti-Reverse mode, Fixed growths (meaning no RNG upon level up), 0% growths, and several more options.
The game very much follows the design principles of New Mystery of the Emblem’s highest difficulty, meaning difficulty is more geared toward enemies being placed with devilish precision and not by simply throwing a lot of them at the map or giving them huge stats.
DS-era save points also dot nearly every map. (You can see one in the first screenshot I posted). Also returning from the DS era are generic replacements for your units if too many of them die that you can’t fill your deployment slots.
Though the story and writing are not the focus of the mod, the story is reasonably engrossing anyways, and tells the tale of the soldiers of the Treuran Empire as they try to bring peace and security to a brutal, hard land.
The characters are all very well-written, the villains included. Supports are not yet completed, but work on the hack is ongoing and Scraiza promises to have them in a future version. There’ll also be an alternate story route in future versions of the game.
In terms of representation, no classes are gender-locked. You can have male Pegasus Knights and Troubadours or female Fighters and Pirates. Female generic enemies are also frequently present, as are female bosses and major villains.
Some characters are explicitly LGBT+, and there’s even a weapon that can only be used by gender nonconforming characters. Genderlocked weapons do exist, but with a twist in that some women can use the supposedly male-only Mars tome (such as Aenny who finds the idea of throwing fireballs cool enough to call herself a tomboy) and some men can use the apparently female-only Ladyblade (like Steel who’s so insanely dedicated to the blade that he’ll become whatever the sword he’s holding requires). But the real fun behind them is they’re locked to the UNIT, not to the CLASS, so you can give a swordsman the Mars tome to let them hit at range, or an archer girl the Ladyblade to let her defend herself up close.
So yeah, all in all, Souls of the Forest is a delightfully (in many ways absurdly) fun fan hack and well worth giving a ghost! It can be found here:
