Padre's World: The Good Vicar preached on the Feast of Purification and Presentation or Candlemas at the Episcopal Church of St John the Baptist. I talked about hopeful realism when the prophetic word is both challenging and comforting. I also pointed out in the story how elder and younger generations coming together for a move of God. I told them that we like to court change but when we have to make a commitment to change and enter into convenant with change some of us is not prepared. I ended my sermon with an impromptu singing of This Little Light of Mine and the choir and congregation. Padre's World: The Good Vicar and his beautiful wife Monique spent the weekend with their new church family in the Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida. I was acknowledged as the Rector Elect of The Episcopal Church of St John the Baptist. Bishop Greg Brewer gave a stirring State of the Diocese speech. The theme for the 50th Jubilee Covention was Say Yes to Jesus. The Presiding Bishop, Michael Curry preached on the Power of Love at the Friday Night Revival. Next Saturday February 9th at the Episcopal Church of St John the Baptist, I will be received in as an Episcopal priest and installed as the 5th Rector of St John the Baptist. I am so proud of our Church and our congregation's representation in our Diocese and National Church. Krisita Jackson is the National President of the Daughters' of the King, president of our Deanery, and serves on the Diocesan Board. Lorraine Harris serves on the Commission on Ministry and the Standing Committee. Canon Fr Pinder, Rector Emeritus and Civil Rights leader continues to serve our Church and Community and inspires future generations to fight the good fight for Kingdom Justice. Padre's World: In the earliest years of the Church, there were a couple of plagues that hit the Roman Empire. While many folk fled the cities including the doctors, it was this strange cult that prayed to Christus (Christ) as a god, ate his flesh and blood (paraphrase from Pliny) that stayed and ministered to the sick and fed the hungry because the sick like this strange cult were outcasts of the Empire. Today, the Church has a choice to either capture that "sacrificial spirit" of the Early Church or become a "social club". Today's quote comes from Dr King's "Letters from Birmingham Jail" where he is writing to white moderate pastors to stand with him in the Civil Rights Movement over 50 years ago. However, this letter could be written today to every Church because his prophetic words have been fulfilled in many ways. Young people have either left the Church or don't go to Church because of this indictment of the Church becoming a social club. In times of crisis, we are called as the Church to reach out in whatever ways that we can. However, we can be present in this pandemic we should. We do this not for notoriety, or pats on the back, we do this for the simple thing because it's the right thing to do! It is what Jesus commands to do when loving our neighbor in friend and stranger. So I want to say thank you to everyone especially The Episcopal Church of St John the Baptist for being present in this pandemic and feeding folk not only in our neighborhood which we have been doing for years but also ministering to strangers who have heard we a little bit of food to give away. Padre's World: Yesterday, The Good Vicar and The Episcopal Church of St John the Baptist had the great privilege to host Dr Carl Maltsby and Dr James Abbington wonder Worship Experience: Sing From the Rafters where we sang songs from the One Faith, One Lord, One Baptism a new Ecumenical Hymnal rooted in the African American Church Experience. We had Baprists, African Methodist Episcopal, Presbyterians, Baptist, Roman Catholics, some from Pentecostal background, and of course Episcopalians singing together. Padre's World: The Episcopal Church of St John the Baptist is on the move! Mara and Linda were walking the neighborhood one day looking for churches to partner with them in their vision of cooking, helping kids, and transforming our community of Washington Shores. They visited St John's but the Good Rector stepped out to get his beard trimmed at the local barber shop and missed their visit. Mara and Linda gave their information to the office and were walking out of the church yard when I was walking in. We met and we talked and now we are exploring different ways we can make a difference in the neighborhood. I love the way the Triune God connects diverse folk for the purposes of his Kingdom. Padre's World: The Good Rector giving closing remarks at the Celebration of Absolam Jones which was presented by the Union of Black Episcopalians. The Episcopal Church of St John the Baptist played a key role in organizing the event. I am so proud of our president John and our coordinator Faye as well as the members of UBE who took part in this event. It is important that the Church take a role in being a Community of Reconciliation, when the culture wants us to Consumed by Division. My adopted grandmother said: Unity is not uniformity but diversity in the Presence of God. Padre's World: The Good Vicar and his wife has some furniture in their apartment. We were blessed with a great deal which furnished our living room, dining room, and bedroom.
