Photo
This is a picture from the aftermath of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, which destroyed buildings in downtown Santa Cruz, including Bookshop Santa Cruz. This is from over a year later, in December 1990, when two artists put in a “blue nylon sculpture topped with cafe table and chairs” and “accompanied by electronic musical score on the spot where Bookshop Santa Cruz once stood.” Here’s what one man had to say:
“There is a song from ‘Les Miserables’ about empty tables, empty tables,” said passerby Todd Williams of San Jose. “After the battle, all the young men who died didn’t come back to the tables and the chairs. This reminds me of that song.”
Source: the Santa Cruz Sentinel, 2 December 1990
#this is really only interesting to me because I used to live in santa cruz so I heard about that earthquake and have been to the bookshop#les miserables#lm musical#fans through the ages

📕⭕️ TAYLOR SWIFT STYLE BOOK TOUR ⭕️📕
10 cities for 10 albums.
Taylor Swift Style is a love letter. To fashion, of course. To Taylor and her music, naturally. But also to YOU as a community for making this highly niche topic something that a publisher realised people would have an appetite for.
There is no TSS without you. TSSers who are kind, thoughtful, insightful, curious, excited, and unafraid of the deep dive. You want more from conversations and connection and emotions. You crave intensity and thoroughness and thoughtfulness. You want to magnify the small because it’s those tiny microscopic details that make up the shattered mosaic of our hearts. It’s why we’re Taylor Swift fans, right? I so hope that at least one of you sees a bookstore that you love and have fond memories of on this list. And I’m so excited at the chance to make new ones together on this tour.
*RSVPing is highly encouraged and free! Some events will require free registration beforehand*
**Ticketed events require a ticket purchase beforehand. This applies only to Naperville, IL**
💚 Tuesday, Oct 8 | 7PM PT || Third Place Books (Seward Park) in Seattle, WA. UPDATE: SOLD OUT.
💛 Wednesday, Oct 9 | 7PM PT || Bookshop in Santa Cruz, CA. RSVP HERE.
💜 Thursday, Oct 10 | 7PM CT || Andersons Bookshop in Naperville, IL in conversation with Kate Kennedy. UPDATE: SOLD OUT.
❤️ Saturday, Oct 12 | 11:15AM CT || Heartland Book Fest in Kansas City, MO in conversation with Melody Rowell. RSVP HERE.
🩵 Tuesday, Oct 15 | 6:30PM ET || Barnes & Noble (Atlantic Ave) in Brooklyn, NY in conversation with Olivia Muenter. INFO HERE.
🖤 Thursday, Oct 17 | 6PM PT || Black Bond Books (Broadway) in Vancouver, Canada. INFO HERE.
🩷 Saturday, Oct 19 | 3PM PT || Annabelle's Book Club in Studio City, LA in conversation with Elizabeth Holmes. PURCHASE TICKETS HERE.
🩶 Monday, Oct 28 | 6:30PM CT || Parnassus Books in Nashville, TN in conversation with Bryan West. UPDATE: SOLD OUT. WAITLIST HERE.
🤎 Wednesday, Oct 30 | 7PM ET || Kramers in Washington, D.C.. RSVP HERE.
💙 Friday, Nov 1 | 7PM ET || Brookline Booksmith in Brookline, MA. UPDATE: SOLD OUT.
And as Taylor would say 🔜🇨🇦😘
If you haven't yet, Taylor Swift Style is available to pre-order at a number of major retailers HERE.
Pre-orders mean everything in the world of book publishing. Pre-orders determine how many copies a bookstore orders, how a book is displayed in stores, and they largely determine best seller lists. How incredible would that be if TSS were on one? (There's a particular one I have in mind ... which is perhaps dreaming impossible things). All that to say, if you were thinking of waiting for release that a pre-order would mean so much!
With love, Sarah

slide four: at the center of the slide, text reads "3. DELIGHTFUL NARRATIVE VOICE." smaller text boxes read "the sheer range of the range of character narrations in this book is impressive and so fun" and "we got teen talk we got litfic prose we got monsters narrating we got ordinary people." there are also three quotes from various stories, set in speech bubbles:
“Everyone’s cousin Tanya says she’s done it with an elf dude. That doesn’t mean shit.”
“And all of these things were true, and simultaneous, and all of them were occurring only a moment before she might be killed, and rise again.”
“At first, the plants seemed quite innocuous, and Ephraim watched them pile up on the windows of the little greenhouse with mild curiosity.”
there is also an edited image of the "she doesn't have the range" meme, reading, "they have the range."
slide five: the top of the slide reads "4. DON’T LIKE ONE-OFFS? NO PROBLEM!" the bullet points beneath read:
do you prefer your short stories unrelated to each other? completely tonally variant?
SNR has got that!
do you prefer your short stories interconnected? do you like recurring characters? do you want to see… characters from OTHER yves. projects?
SNR has got that too!
smaller text boxes read "Red and Eliza from Forest Castles are there!" and "maybe avner too. i'm not allowed to say"
there is also a picture of hannah montana's "best of both worlds" album.
slide six: the top of the slide reads "5. THERE ARE NEW STORIES IN IT!" the bullet points beneath read:

THREE new stories
what if the alien abductee you were interviewing had questions… for you?
what if you had to love-potion your crush… for someone else?
what if you had to come out to your date… AS A MONSTER?
there are clipart images on the side of an alien spaceship, a bubbling potion, and a lit candle.
slide seven: word art with a glowing green shadow reads "max's favorite stories :)". each story blurb goes with a corresponding image:
Six Hours Under: the woman on the L train is crying, dead, and very very pretty. [clipart of a train]
Monsters and The Guy: there’s a guy in Arrivals. he’s being weird about it. [clipart of an airport]
The Hands and The Mouth: the story-speakers speak only in script. there are only a few of them left. [clipart of rolling waves]
Don't Feel Guilty: a teen’s plant collection starts to unnerve their father. [clipart of a leaf]
Blood Orange Tea: getting trapped at work with your crush is awkward even when you’re not a vampire. [clipart of iced tea]
slide eight: large text reads "THANK YOU. GO FORTH AND BUY SNR." in smaller text is the information paragraph from this post.

Not long ago I visited the Santa Cruz Bookshop, and in the restroom, I overheard a little girl with her mother. The little girl apparently loved the sound of the words "the bookshop," or was just extremely happy to be there, so she kept repeating "the bookshop" over and over and over again.
"The bookshop! The bookshop! The bookshop! The bookshop! The bookshop!" She said it so many times.
I couldn't help but think of a certain ditzy witch in a Halloween cult classic, who repeats words over and over again in a sing-songy way whenever she likes the sound of them.
"This girl is a little Sarah Sanderson!" I thought to myself.

Are YOU a vampire or some other creature who relies on the consumption of blood? Are YOU growing bored with the same texture and taste, day in and day out? Do YOU need something new to drink while reading the fifth anniversary edition of yves.'s Something's Not Right? Try mixing sustenance with energy by adding blood to your coffee! Some humans mix protein powder into their morning brew, so why should things be any more difficult for you? Here are five ideas to get you started!
Latte
Let's start simple! A latte is something that lots of folks can enjoy, with just a little foam on top for that change in texture so many search for! On top of that, it's endlessly customizable; you can leave it as-is if you'd like to really keep that taste of iron on your tongue, or you can add in flavor syrups to spice things up! Plus, wouldn't little fangs drawn with milk on the top be simply adorable?
2. Iced Coffee
Speaking of endlessly customizable! The only requirements for an iced coffee are simply that: ice and cold coffee. Those who enjoy the taste of blood but want a little change can keep it simple, while those who want to cover it up can pour in cream, sugar, and flavor syrups to their heart's content! As a bonus, this drink can easily be poured into a tumbler for those on-the-go.
3. Affogato
For those with a bit of a sweet tooth! This drink is traditionally served over vanilla ice cream, but we say why not try something a little different? Why not chocolate for a sort of mocha flavor, or cherry to go with the blood you're pouring in? If you're feeling fancy, you can even save a little blood for the end to drizzle on top like a syrup!
4. Frappe
Here's something decadent, and still quite customizable! Frappes come in many different flavors, and as they are basically a coffee milkshake, they're perfect for those summer days when you aren't really in the mood for warm blood trailing down your throat. Plus, who doesn't like chasing something down with a large helping of whipped cream?
5. Coffee Freakshake
I mean, come on. We HAD to include freakshakes! They're all the rage these days, and talk about decadent! For the blood-drinking influencer who really wants to conceal the blood in their meal, and who may still have a taste for the sweet things from their old life.
Do you think you'll try any of these drinks? Which was your favorite? Do you have any suggestions to break up the monotony of blood-drinking? Let us know in the comments and reblogs, and don't forget to pick up a copy of Something's Not Right, out October 10th, 2023!
Something’s Not Right, published by tRaum Books, will be released October 10th 2023 and is available to preorder at Amazon, Bookshop.org, and itch.io. It will also be available upon release signed from Bookshop Santa Cruz. yves. will also have a local event at 6:30 PM on October 12th at the Santa Cruz Diversity Center and another on January 4th 2024 (to be announced) at Bookshop Santa Cruz.

Queer stickers for Bookshop Santa Cruz to sell before and at my event on January 4th! If you're not in the area, you're welcome to DM me and I'll try to get you a quote for whichever designs you like in whatever quantities + shipping. These are primarily based on vintage LGBT pins with input (see: TS reference) from BSC staff. More below the cut!
More photos coming of these in particular shortly! I'm especially proud of the one inspired by Richard Fiala's iconic shirt comic. I just got the second order delivered, so it'll take a moment to get them all lined up and photographed nicely.

FLP CHAPBOOK OF THE DAY: All the Pretty Things Are Dying by Laurel Maxwell
On SALE: https://www.finishinglinepress.com/product/all-the-pretty-things-are-dying-by-laurel-maxwell/
All the Pretty Things Are Dying includes #poems that speak to #environmental #loss, longing for the heart’s desires to be seen and recognized, beauty in life’s everyday moments, and questions that reach into the soul. Many poems rely on close observation of the #natural #world in order to make sense of our place in the universe and grapple with how to exist while living within a constant state of change and uncertainty.
Laurel Maxwell is a writer and poet from Santa Cruz, CA. Her work draws inspiration from the natural world and is moved by the ways people interact with a changing climate. Her work has appeared at baseballballard.com, coffecontrails, phren-z, Verse-Virtual, Tulip Tree Review, and Yellow Arrow Vignette. She also blogs about travel, and teaching. She holds a B.A from Whitworth University and served as Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic. She works in education and loves to get lost in bookshops.
PRAISE FOR All the Pretty Things Are Dying by Laurel Maxwell
In her collection, All the Pretty Things are Dying, Laurel Maxwell asks her readers to engage with the work by asking questions. In “Eight”: “What about those unbelieving believers who hunger?/What about the waves that continually somersault onto the shore?” In “Bottled Hearts”: “Is that how the heart keeps from grieving?/Continually remaking itself until it has become something else altogether?” And then answers, which aren’t meant to be the answers, bur rather a means to provoke deeper reflection. In “Warning”: “The ocean only wants to whisper to sand/…Trees want to root and shoot like arrows in the azure sky.” After Pablo Neruda, after Mary Oliver, Maxwell asks us again and again, “And what is it we desire in the world?” speaking to longing, heart and destruction, inviting readers into a dialogue which includes Ilya Kaminsky, Naomi Shihab Nye, Aida Limon, ocean, monarchs, redwoods, worms and potatoes. In one of the final poems, “What I Carry,” Maxwell queries “Then how do you live?/Unfolding like a flower that turns its head to the sun.” As these poems unfold with keen observation, piquant language, understated elegance and deep wisdom.

Gotta love when you’re reading a book and they mention one of you favorite bookstores @bookshopsc I go to Santa Cruz to hear the ocean and to roam the aisles of Bookshop Santa Cruz. Oh and to get some donuts from Ferrell’s on the way home. I can’t wait to roam the aisles when the #sip is lifted. I’ve almost read all the unread books that I’ve been collecting for years. I’m going to need a new stash very soon. #violetsareblue #jamespatterson #bookstagram #bookshopsc #bookgeek #bookworm #booknerd #books #bookish #openbook #bibliophile #bookaddict #bookaholic #bookaholicsanonymous #bibliotherapy #santacruz #readersofinstagram #readmorebooks #reading #read #quarantinereading https://www.instagram.com/p/CAWtzBfAuOo/?igshid=1il0io3y3savf
