You. Guys.
The most amazing thing that has ever happened has happened to me.
I don't know if this author has a Tumblr account or if she wants me advertising her name, but she did give me permission to share the pictures she sent me.
And. They're. Ah. May. Zing!

Look at this freakin' masterpiece!
I am so honoured she chose my story to put into physical form! I look at the page and I think, 'Holy cow! This is what it'd look like if I were a real live author!' and it's very exciting.
Apparently this is the first book she's ever bound. Binded? Book-binded? Book-bound? Well, either way, she did an AMAZING job. I think it looks totally legit. And it's not just because she used my story to do it!!!!

I'm like super normal and not unhinged in the slightest (I spent 3 days formatting, printing, and binding a niche internet story about sci fi football into a 280 page physical book)

A renegade publication: how to bind & trim a fantastic beast.
For my birthday, my mother-in-law surprises me with a really great gift. She gives me a book binding machine. This isn’t a fancy machine. It’s basically a glorified (low-heat) cooking griddle, with “flanges” that squeeze a stack of papers upright, on its back so to speak. Then the flat surface melts a strip of glue and binds a cardstock cover to the edges of the pages.  When I get it set up in my…

25 Free Typesets!
Tumblr media
New achievement unlocked! I've finished my 25th public domain typeset, and you can find all 25 unimposed pdfs for FREE here! (Personal use only! Use these to read, bind, burn, or ignore at your pleasure!) I'm so excited to post this collage of all the title pages I've done for pd texts thus far. I started getting into typesetting earlier this year, and that journey started with googling "what is typesetting???" 😅😆. Since then, it's been fun exploring literature and the designs surrounding text. Anyway, thank you to everyone who's stopped by this blog! It's meant a lot to me, whether you liked/reblogged/followed, or just took a look!

Want to fanbind? Need davy boards/book boards and low on funds? I have an excellent hack for you:
Repurpose shitty books
"But!!!" You may say, "no book is shitty! All human experiences are worth putting to paper!"
You're right! But, also, Counterpoint:
Tumblr media
I went to my local thrift shop and got these for the low price of $5 for all 10. ("Getting into politics?" The lovely ladies behind the counter asked me. "In a manner of speaking," I replied.)
Once I got home, it was easy to turn them into this, their component parts:
Tumblr media
("Please stop saying you're skinning them," my partner begged. Too late!)
[EDIT TO ADD: Here's a guide! Also on my tumblr. Also - when thrifting, bring a piece of paper folded or cut into the minimum size you need for boards: this way you can make sure you're getting big enough material!]
While these are just book boards, diligent deconstruction can even yield headbands, I'm pretty sure - I'll report back on my next trial run. [EDIT TO ADD: yup, you can!]
I cannot overstate the delight I have in giving these covers new life for binding fanfiction, particularly the queer kind.
Happy binding!

SVSSSAction Bingge/Yuan Prompt for Anonymous!
I went with Bingge reverse transmigrating to streamer Shen Yuan, who thinks it's some cosplayer in his home, and proceeds to comment on his 'Luo Binghe' outfit
This cosplayer sure looks gorgeous....

About the bind: ✦ Inspired by sardine chocolates I saw, where the paper packaging was a can with a cutout window and you could see the sardne chocy inside ✦ Illustrated the endpaper to make it look like cut up fish ✦ the silver rolled up foil is scrap Vinyfrog silver foil HTV, it's sturdy enough to stay rolled up with some super glue but not get squashed. It's not attached to the case in case Octo wishes to slide the book into the shelf ✦ The case is supposed to look the can, with a cut open window to peek inside. ✦ ain't a book featuring fish if I don't give the fish legs to run away (I call them reverse mermaid)

This partial spine repair, done by our wonderful Preservation department, is so soothing to watch! The book is wrapped in a bandage at the end to further distribute the PVA glue and to apply gentle, even pressure as the glue dries.

Cumdach of the Stowe Missal (Ireland, 1025-1052) Wood, brass, silver gilt, glass cabochons;
The Department of Medieval Art and The Cloisters has in its collection a curious early 20th-century reproduction of the 11th-century Cumdach of the Stowe Missal. A cumdach, or book shrine, is an Irish form of reliquary case made for books associated with important religious figures. Only five early examples of cumdachs exist.
Held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art
